i had to stop doing these for a hot minute cause tumblr mobile eating my whole entire previous ask answer pissed me off too much. anyway i’m back also zi i would kill for you

one oc per emoji, strap the FUCK in kids we’re doing the 6 shepards i’ve done actual development for and converted into non-shepard ocs so i could jam them all into one canon like a madman, plus that one cute golden retriever puppy in a turian suit who’s been in like 3 chapters out of 30+ so far yet is everyone’s favorite somehow

i swear i tried to keep all of these to one paragraph but i like!! to talk!! about my characters!!

matteo shepard is amab nonbinary, he or they pronouns, and is the canon shepard for my no-reapers au. they’re technically a colonist shep, but also super not cause i customized their backstory, my city now. they were born and raised on terra nova with their older brother leonardo and younger brother pietro. when they were twelve, their mom mysteriously vanished without a trace, leaving the family devastated and confused. matt’s dad did his best to raise the kids by himself, but never gave up hope mom would turn up some day, even when the cops concluded she was probably dead.

matt themself joined the alliance after college with a vague idea of maybe being able to find their mom in their travels, but eventually hung up that idea, deciding it was probably unrealistic. they managed to save two others of their squad on akuze, jai landry-torres and roman klein, but privately don’t think they did anything special, and don’t understand why everyone thinks they did. according to matt, they were just lucky, and they panicked, and they blame themself for not being able to save more of the squad.

niazmina khulozai is an earthborn software engineer from afghanistan, who went to stanford and only joined up with the alliance because it was her best opportunity for working on starships. she personally thinks very poorly of the alliance itself, but keeps her mouth shut so she doesn’t get in too much trouble. she’s muslim, and has seemingly no fewer than 3 hijabs for any given occasion. she also has a variety of sunglasses customized and programmed to function exactly the same as the visors you can find in the games, because she hates the hassle of trying to get her hijab to lie the way she wants it to over the visors and it’s much easier (and, in her opinion, more fashionable) to just slide on some cool shades. she’s bi and poly, has a girlfriend katya and boyfriend orion, and they’re all one big happy healthy polypile.

feliks haugen is also earthborn, and is mostly notable for the fact that he somehow just, seems to keep collecting cats. each installment of matteo’s adventures he appears in, he somehow has another cat. he lives on arcturus station when he’s not on the normandy, and there’s quite a few stray animals hanging around, which he feeds, and sometimes the cats just. decide to come in. the big three are jonesy the ginger tabby, who likes to steal oatmeal out of feliks’s bowl and thinks he will someday catch a mouse on the normandy; kitty the caliby (calico, but the patches are tabby instead of solid color, with a lot of white), who is a Shoulder Cat™ and very small; and blackfoot, a seal point tom who mostly hangs out on top of the fridge scowling at everyone and is mostly just an expy of my favorite warrior cat because i can. feliks has hypersomnia, and does his best to keep a normal sleep schedule, but that’s a lot harder than it sounds on the normandy.

zofia wen qian malinowski is the lone spacer, nonbinary, and afro-chinese polish. she’s an adept, and is very good at what she does. as a result of all the eezo exposure, because it’s radioactive, she had quite a few issues at birth, including a hole in her heart and some lung problems that were corrected with surgery. one of the things that wasn’t corrected was her right hand being deformed, with just a nub for a hand with 4 smaller nubs that should have been fingers. she’s perfectly capable of using it as well as her other hand, but she has a prosthetic hand she can control with the nubs for when she needs it. it’s very convincing, and sometimes she likes to just. take it off, to see people’s reactions. she has two pet rats, each of which is named one syllable of the mandarin word for “rat,” as an in-joke with herself because everyone thinks it’s super deep and philosophical when she really just named them “rat: parts 1 and 2,” and that is very funny to her.

gavrail nikolayevhich stoykanov is the butcher of torfan, but it’s not recommended to say so to his face. he’s still very sore about how the alliance threw him to the wolves after torfan, and would rather nobody speak of it in his presence, ever. he had a rough childhood, being jerked around by both sides of his family and only having three people in the whole giant group who really seemed to care about how he felt about the matter and how all the drama was affecting him (his mom, his twin brother dragomir, and his grandmother on dad’s side), so the alliance treating him like collateral the same way his family did really didn’t endear them to him.

he took the matter to udina, who was rightfully horrified and sought help from the big guns (aka sparatus, who as a Good Turian™ was also angered over the alliance’s dishonorable conduct) to go over the brass’s heads and get some laws in place to make sure it wouldn’t happen to anybody else. after that, gav fucked off to omega to be hurt and angry and sad in peace. his therapist before he left recommended he get a pet to help him, so he adopted a dog from a rescue, a cream standard poodle named foxtrot who had been abandoned by her owners when she wasn’t a tiny adorable puppy anymore. he felt a kindred spirit kinda thing for her. by 2186, she’s been officially trained and registered as a therapy dog, and he affectionately calls her his “war poodle.” he has a big crush on kaidan, but is too socially awkward to say anything, but then cortez comes on board and they bond over similar experiences with loss and trauma and the alliance not getting them therapy, and they get together so it works out.

michaela schulz is a jewish trans woman, and the hero of elysium (or whatever the war hero title is, they give shepard so many monikers that all sound the same i can’t keep them all straight...). she started her transition after the blitz, so sometimes there’s confusion from reporters, but by the time of me1 most of them get informed before they talk to her so they don’t ask any rude questions. she has a wirehaired fox terrier named skippy, who she adopted so she could have a jogging partner, and he likes to curl up in her lap while she’s doing computer work after he’s gotten his fill of exercise for the day. she gets with kaidan (after skippy gives his approval, of course), and they adopt a few kids together.

taniria arterius is the 17yo (in 2183) daughter of desolas arterius and valis abrudas, special no-reapers au exclusive oc. she’s cute and energetic, but she knows more about her family’s situation (her parents both suffering severe ptsd and her dad fighting alcoholism, to summarize) than she lets on. while her family themselves never pressure her, and in fact encourage her to be whoever she wants to be, she does get a lot of pressure from the rest of society to live up to her parents’ and uncle’s legacies, and it makes her very anxious. she just wants to be a singer and make people smile. she’s very curious and likes to be helpful, even if there’s not a lot she can do. also she’s a lesbian

niazmina’s parents are….. the epitome of nerd. they met at a chess tournament. as a kid, niazmina did everything she could to establish herself as Not A Nerd, despite that being demonstrably false. her “teenage rebellion” phase was joining a local basketball team. to her surprise, she actually greatly enjoyed playing, and continued to play casually with friends in university and beyond. her parents, for their part, were very supportive, and took the effort to learn about their daughter’s hobby so they could understand what she was talking about and more fully enjoy watching her play (they did, in fact, go to every game they could make it to, because they love her and wanted her to feel supported even if they weren’t into sports themselves).

she speaks three languages: pashto, tunisian arabic, and english. pashto is her first language, and she picked up tunisian arabic as a little kid spending time with her maternal grandfather. english she learned while she was going to university so she could understand her professors, because they didn’t have a fully accurate translator key for pashto at that point, and her brain didn’t think in arabic very well. she still tends to grumble about how she had to learn a third language to study in in the age of real-time translators.

she’s very close with her maternal grandfather, a sweet old man who likes to laugh. he adores her, and she can frequently be heard on comm with him, telling him about how things are going for her. one time, she accidentally set her tea on fire (she’s still not sure how it happened), and he was in absolute stitches laughing at her reaction, and they thought it was so great they devised a way to do it on purpose and toast each other with flaming mugs of tea whenever they meet in person or vidcall.

honestly the only difference between niazmina and gavrail is their trauma responses. they went through the exact same background, and what they saw on torfan changed both of them enormously, but niazmina is paragon and gavrail is renegade

and the difference is that niazmina responded to what she saw by withdrawing, became very “smile and nod” and diplomatic cause clinging to what they told her about being a good soldier was the only way she could justify what happened to herself and part of her hopes that diplomacy will prevent another torfan from ever happening, but gavrail responded by lashing out, getting mad, demanding somebody be held accountable for what happened both to his squad and to all those people he killed in the alliance’s name, because they told him to do whatever it takes and that’s what he did but now his friends are dead and he still doesn’t know what the point of it was

and the alliance held up niazmina like a shiny trophy cause she’s a good soldier, she was their war dog, she did her job and succeeded and it was a great day for the propaganda machine, but gavrail was quietly shooed away because he was angry, and a traumatized man who did whatever it took but wants to know why he had to doesn’t make very good material for “we’re doing the right thing” press conferences

and they were both very happy when they were selected to become spectres, because now they got to decide what be a good soldier and do whatever it takes mean

hmmst. i feel like she probably hasn’t had that many by the time of bm cause.... yknow....... she’s 17. the most recent one was probably also her first one?? and it was mostly the “high school sweethearts” type, yknow, dippy puppy love. they were like 14, and i figure they were together for several months before one night they were hanging out in taniria’s room when daddy came home, and girlfriend had been mostly okay with mom being captain “goddamn” abrudas but then quailed when she figured out she’d also have to gain the approval of general “motherfucking” arterius, and they unfortunately split up shortly after.

honestly?? probably. she has self-esteem issues cause so many of her peers expect her to live up to her parents and uncle’s legacies, even though her parents and uncle themselves have told her to do her own thing and they love her regardless, so if she wants to smash and she thinks they’re more likely to be down if she IS the prodigal daughter everyone thinks she should be, she’ll play it up. it gets better once she’s famous in her own right.

hmmst. well she’s paragon, and i feel like a lot of that attitude comes from torfan and what happened to her there. when she went in, she’d been told that it was justified, it was revenge for the blitz, all that jazz, and it made sense to her at the time because of that “dehumanizing [de-sapient-izing?] the enemy” thing militaries are so good at. yes, a lot of people were going to die, but it was okay, the batarians deserved it and the humans were dying heroic deaths.

but while everything was going down, she came across a batarian who’d been caught by explosives and hadn’t died immediately. he was struggling to breathe and bleeding out, and moving clearly pained him, but even still, when he noticed her approaching, he tried to retreat as quickly as he could. and something about that reaction.... flipped a switch, if you will. reminded her that her enemies and allies alike were soldiers being sent to their deaths. here was a man clearly in his last moments, and he was still desperate to live.

the gravity of what was going on and what she was doing hit her like a freight train. she stared at him in horror for a moment, then forced herself to approach him, holster her gun, show him her hands so he’d know she wouldn’t hurt him, and crouch down to offer medi-gel. once he’d stabilized, she continued on with her mission. she never learned his name, but the memory stuck with her for the rest of her life.

she isn’t proud of what she did at torfan, but that lone, nameless, dying batarian changed her entire outlook on the alliance and how it was interacting with the other species. the alliance lauded her as a hero, but she was haunted by the memory of what happened, and saw her medals and reputation as just propping up the best pawn in a conflict that she couldn’t justify to herself anymore. she was happy to be accepted into the spectres. she still has to make difficult decisions and face down unfathomable horrors, but she likes having more freedom to choose her missions. she doesn’t feel like a pawn anymore.

Stardust - What kind of clothes do they usually wear off-duty? (sporty, elegant or specific clothes like sweatpants, jeans etc)

she’s generally very sporty and practical, usually in a down-to-earth kind of way. she’s muslim, so she 99% of the time keeps her arms and legs covered, and wears a hijab. she has just enough fashion sense to coordinate her hijab with the rest of her outfit. nobody knows how she does it, because she is otherwise completely hopeless. because her fashion sense extends only to color coordination and that’s it, she tends to fall back on a “keep it simple, stupid” plan: jeans and a t-shirt with a jacket, maybe, or sweat pants and a hoodie. gladiator sandals are a constant, but only styles that don’t put anything between her toes, because she hates how it feels. some of the other spectres hooked her up with a spectre hoodie like the one saren is wearing in my sidebar picture (cut for a human, though, obv), and she loves it. simple yet unquestionably cool.

oh, she also has aviator shades she wired up like a visor. multiple sets, in multiple colors, for any possible outfit and lighting situation. she’s only ever seen without them in her apartment. (the gang is fucking floored to find out her eyes are green during the citadel dlc.)

what's funny is. niazmina was originally an expy of an entirely different oc, brought into mass effect via my personal tradition of making that oc in any game that let me play as a girl. then for broken mirror i decided garrus was gonna wind up with tasora cause i make the rules, and for both that and narrative purposes orion and katya, the og oc's love interests from their verse, were brought in, and now i can't fathom breaking them up again for garrusmancing

her parents are…… mega nerds. like, “they met at a chess tournament and her dad threw the match against her mom because he thought she was pretty and wanted to see her smile”-level nerds. niazmina loves them, but she’s lost track of how many things she did as a kid just to distance herself from their Nerd Auras. if you ask about her parents she’ll laugh nervously and change the subject.

she doesn’t drink alcohol, but she likes root beer and shirley temples.

she usually just listens to whatever she feels like at the time, but there’s a general running theme of various subgenres of rock and punk. mostly she just likes stuff with good bass and a beat she can bounce along to.

Hey this is probably entirely not this deep but I’m really sorry that you’re being driven away from shakarian. Mshakarian specifically is a big comfort ship for me and considering how much I respect your opinions it just sucks to see stupid people making you dislike it.

i love and appreciate both this message and you, thank you for saying so

and yeah man it’s annoying and frustrating for me too, like…. shakarian was my VERY FIRST ship in this fandom, i got into m.e. cause of turians and then my bff told me you could KISS ONE and i was sold, no interest in any other romance i just wanted to kiss garrus. and i still really like playing through his romance in the games, and seeing cute fanart and headcanons for it, and it’ll always have a really special place in my heart

but the fans………… they’re just so bad, my dude……… i can’t read fic for it anymore cause they 1) warp garrus out of character or b) employ some really weird sexist/misogynistic tropes or iii) go out of their way to shit on other characters for seemingly posing a threat to the relationship or δ) a mix-and-match combo of the above. it’s so bad. and on the rare cases when you DO find good quality fic that doesn’t do any of that, it’ll be bad in other ways (personally my big nopes are shitting on the council but that’s me).

and then outside of fic their behavior in general is just so SHITTY, like yeah god fucking forbid another character LOOK AT GARRUS FOR FIVE SECONDS, or SPEAK TO HIM, oh my god it’s the end of the fucking world and they’re trying to take sheppy shep’s place as his twu wuv. or they’ll go out of their way to harrass people for shipping other things, or be super obnoxious about the ship when it’s 100% uncalled for. there’s been A Lot of posts, esp fanart or headcanons or general “gee i sure like this thing” posts where i considered rb’ing it but then it took a hard left into Weirdly Sexual And/Or Super Creepy territory, like comments abt how they want him to raw them when it’s an otherwise innocuous post, or shit like “if you don’t ship them what the fuck is wrong with you.” like goddamn have y’all ever spoken to a real person before! this isn’t healthy! go outside! read a book! whatever, just put the viddy game down!

that’s very rambly but yeah like….. i really wish i could still enjoy shakarian the way i used to, i have a shepard in my spreadsheet who’s another garrusmance (now that niazmina is an oc-mancer she’ll be my only one lmao) that i want to start up eventually, but i just……. can’t get past how i Know the fans are, y’know?? i don’t want creepy sexual comments/tags on my work, i don’t want people to take a screenshot i post cause i think it’s funny and get their panties in a twist (wet or otherwise) over it, i just want to enjoy myself in peace, and the easiest way for me to do that is to just sit in the corner making action figures kiss and not talk to anyone about it ever.

ok as for those other 3. let’s start with a broad statement then get into the deets: VERY sweet, love all three of them, truly #blessed

ok full disclosure, i used to. ABHOR. shenko. and a huge part of it is on the fans. like, yeah, part of it was on how the romance happens in me1, we’ve all heard that complaint. i had no idea i was romancing kaidan, i thought i was just being a good friend, but OH SURPRISE YOU’RE IN LOVE NOW. and yeah, that was pretty off-putting! it felt kinda “nice guy”-ish to me, to be perfectly honest. but hey, that shit’s on the writers, and it’s an issue with ALL the me1 romances. i could still see how it COULD be really sweet, it just wasn’t for me.

and then the fans.

the fans were what really drove me away from the ship, honestly. it’s the same situation as i’ve been having with shakarian. the majority of the fans, or at least a very vocal minority, are goddamn insane. they were pushing me away from kaidan himself as a character, too. they were so obsessive over him and how his relationship with shepard is CLEARLY the BEST one and the one the writers WANTED to be canon and blah blah blah, i couldn’t stand it. it made me hate it.

and they had (and still have) no self-awareness! i used to have a mutual (i unfollowed and softblocked them over them being passive-aggressive over something stupid) who once said they were afraid to admit they ship shenko because they thought nobody else shipped it. i was so annoyed i put together an entire excel spreadsheet, using ao3 statistics, of the top 10 ships in the fandom by fanfic counts to prove no, you goddamn buffoon, you are very much in the majority here.

but as of late i’ve been taking more of a step back from fandom nonsense, trying to ignore the vocal idiots in the fandom so i can sit down and really think about things and come up with ideas and perspectives and opinions free of the taint of what the fans made me feel. and y’know what?? i decided i do actually like shenko!! it’s cute!! when you get past the clunky writing in me1, it’s a genuinely sweet ship!! kaidan’s a great guy!! i’m sorry i didn’t give you a chance, kaidan, i love you, i really do. i’m actually kind of excited to continue my kaidanmance shepard now (once i retrieve more dlc stuff from my brother’s old xbox, that is...), so i can form a proper opinion using the content from ALL the games instead of an me1 romance and weird fandom bullshit. i also want to make an mshep who romances him, because both fshenko and mshenko are equally cute and i love them both.

(if ur new and reading this, there’s some fairly recent ones, or u could just search shakarian on my blog, it’ll pop up.) i’m not a fan of them. i do not like the shakarian fans. they’re making me despise something i love because none of them know how to act fucking normal.

that said. holy SHIT do i ever have a soft spot for shakarian.

like ok, i’ll admit, lately my fondness for them has been waning. niazmina shep, my first garrusmancer, is now an oc-mancer for reasons i outlined in this post [link]. in both my “official” canons garrus ends up with the citadel dlc turian woman. but yknow what?? garrus is still my personal favorite romance. i have plans to make a new garrusmance, because i can’t NOT have one. every now and then i get the itch to play through his romance again, because it’s just so sweet i love it so much.

garrus was my very first romance that i got into, and romancing him will always feel like home. i love him the most. he’s my space boyfriend. i might go to other ships, but part of me will always prefer smoochin’ that big handsome nerdy dorky cricket bird boy.

honestly?? i actually tend to. prefer a more fleshed-out version than what’s presented in-game.

in-game it feels very..... unpolished, i guess. playing through it, there were a lot of points where i was like, “well that was abrupt???” like, i think either the lock-in cutscene or the one before it has thane admitting how much he loved irikah and how much he misses her, and shep basically goes, “cool, btw i’m mad in love with you.” and then his pre-endgame scene, he literally starts crying about not wanting to die, and 5 seconds later you go have sex. like...... um??

like, i can see what they’re going for, and i LOVE that!! the whole concept is, grieving widower finds solace and comfort in a new friend, friend lends a sympathetic ear, the two of them gradually fall in love. that’s really sweet!! i love it!! but the execution..... leaves something to be desired.

and then we all know how Uhhhhh, the me3 romance content is, lol. i do think it’s sweet, but to me it feels like they just kinda. forgot he’s a romance option. it’s just so bare-bones.

so yeah, i tend to build the narrative and flesh it out more in my head, and THAT’S what i really dig. it’s a really sweet, touching thing, but bioware prooooobably should’ve done a little more work on it to make it a little less clunky.
