Somehow, Leo's depth continued to be visible right in the beginning of the second set, more or less capitalizing on Elias' errors (including a double fault and a forehand gone too wide). Leo then came up with a forehand winner to convert his break point 2-0 after a previous service game hold. Subsequently, he consolidated that point to 3-0.
However, Elias was still able to hold his service games to avoid further demolition. One of which came from a rally where he went left and right and finished that point with a working volley several points before he held his service game 2-4. On the other hand, Leo's service games were inevitable toward the end of the match, resulting in several unreturned serves and sealing the match with an ace (6-3), earning him his first ATP-level victory after ages of receiving wild cards to no avail. A progress.

❌️ Alexander lost his QF match in Båstad against Rublev 2-6 3-6
Tumblr media
Sadly, after a clinical performance from Alexander in the previous round, his level just wasn't there in today's match 😔 Between his serve not firing like normal, a lot of unforced errors at the baseline and at the net, he was unable to ever really find his rhythm in the match, and his run in Båstad sadly stops here.
Alexander started strong, not stopping a point on serve for his first two service games, but then an unfortunate game on his serve at 2-3 led to him facing two break points. One of them he was able to save, but an untimely double fault meant that he was then broken, giving Rublev a 4-2 lead. Sadly, Alexander was not able to regain his focus, with his next service game at 5-2 being even more error-filled, causing him to lose the set on a double break 6-2.
The second set was very similar, except in this set, Alexander obtained two break points at 1-1, his first of the match. Sadly though, he was unable to convert them, and Rublev held serve for 2-1. Both players continued to hold serve until 4-3 to Rublev, when another unfortunate game resulted in Alexander being broken for 5-3, allowing Rublev to serve out the match 6-2 6-3.
As sad as it is seeing Alexander lose again, he did still obtain two solid wins in Båstad, so though he was unable to find his form today, there are still positives about his run here. Hopefully he can rest well now and regroup before he begins preparations for his next tournament, which is not only in his home country, but his home city too 🖤
➡️ Onto Hamburg.

Many people's mortgage interest rate adjustment day still lies ahead, reports Iltalehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun), which says borrowers could be in for a nasty shock.
Some 95 percent of mortgages in Finland are tied to variable reference rates, such as the 3-month, 6-month or 12-month Euribor.
"If a customer's 12-month Euribor rate is adjusted today, it will change from around 0.3 percent to approximately 3.8 percent," Jussi Pajala from Nordea bank told IL.
Hanna Heinonen of OP bank pointed out that the interest rates on housing loans have been rising since last spring.
"It's expected that short-term reference rates will peak in the latter half of this year and then gradually decline during 2024," she added.
Rental worries
Helsingin Sanomat (siirryt toiseen palveluun)meanwhile follows up on 10-percent rent increases planned by the Helsinki City Housing Company (Heka), which is Finland's largest residential rental firm.
Several city councillors contacted by the paper said they were unaware of the magnitude of the planned hikes.
"Rents have also increased elsewhere, and we were aware that there was upward pressure, but a more than ten percent increase is exceptionally high," said Ville Jalovaara (SDP).
He also pointed out that on the free market, rental prices did not increase significantly last year—in fact, they decreased.
One in seven capital dwellers — 90,000 in total — live in Heka flats.
Washed up
Rescue services on Thursday evening removed a dead seal that had washed up on a beach in Helsinki's Lauttasaari district, reports Hufvudstadsbladet (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
The seal was lying in the water near a pier when rescue services arrived. Rescue workers aren't usually tasked with removing dead seals.
"It can upset people, so we removed the seal," the on-duty fire chief told the Swedish-language daily.
Two seal species live in Finnish maritime areas: the Baltic ringed seal and the grey seal, which is both larger and more common. They mainly inhabit the open sea, as well as islets and rocky outcrops in the outer archipelago. There is also the Saimaa ringed seal, a freshwater species living in the Saimaa lake system.

Fed likely to go 75 bp, signal higher terminal rate
Inflation remains a worsening issue for the Federal Open Market Committee, analysts said, questioning whether anyone really has a handle on the issue. “The Fed is still running behind the curve as inflation widens” to more goods and services, said Sebastien Galy, senior macro strategist at Nordea Asset Management, noting, as such a full point rate hike can’t be ruled out. “The problem for the…

Bastad MS R2: Federico Coria def. Leo Borg [WC] 6-4, 6-2 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 Tennis TV
Fede was pure solid coming to this match. This was reflected from the moment he found his aggression starting the end of the first set, successfully finding his lines until he created 9 opportunities to break. He converted 55% of his break points while trying to press Leo from the baseline, while Leo had 5 opportunities to break (some of which came from his forehand), only for him to convert 20% of them thanks to Fede’s flow control.
On the other hand, Fede also had a strong service game. Landing 76% of his first serves, he had a 67% first serve winning percentage (added with the 2 aces) while he was also consistent through his second serves by winning 12% more of those compared to Leo even if both players double-faulted just once. This showed how vulnerable Leo’s second serves tend to be, especially under pressure throughout the rallies carried on from his second serves, with some forehand rushes that followed did not help as well.
In the quarterfinals, Fede will face his compatriot, Francisco Cerundolo, who earlier defeated Luca van Assche 6-2, 6-3 in the second round. While this could be an interesting encounter for both players who had the aggression, one who executed them on point will prevail from this match. Fede might have led their head-to-head 5-2, but this could be a close encounter looking at where they are for the moment!

🎤 R2 on-court interview following his win over Monteiro:
Tumblr media
Interviewer: So, Sascha Zverev, it didn't take long for you to get back in the clay shape, did it?
Alexander: (Laughs) Today, it didn't; two days ago, it did. But… no, I mean, I'm happy to be playing the way I'm playing, I think today was excellent match, I think it was a much higher level than two days ago, but… (laughs), yeah, I don't know what to say to this question, to be honest. But it's great to be here, it's great to play, and I'm happy to be in the quarter-finals (smiles).
Interviewer: Is it good for you, or is it important to save the energy, just have a match that's one hour, looking at the draw and seeing what's next for you?
Alexander: Yeah, I mean looking at my physical trainer, I think we're gonna go run about 10km on the beach now (the audience laughs), because, I mean, it's still early, we have nothing else to do until the evening; the night club only opens at 11pm, so (the audience cheers, Alexander smiles), you know, what am I gonna do until then?
Interviewer: Thank you very much, and congratulations, Sascha Zverev.
Alexander: Thank you.
❤️ Another lovely on-court interview yesterday, and it's so nice to see him smiling and feeling content with his level of tennis right now. I hope he can carry this positivity and incredible level into his quarter-final match later today. Let's go, Alexander 🔥

Asset managers fail to act on pledges to divest from Brazil over deforestation
Lack of action by institutional investors comes as rate of rainforest clearing hits 15-year high
Tumblr media
[Image description: a deforested plot of Brazilian Amazon rainforest.]
Several European investment groups that last year threatened to divest from Brazil over soaring deforestation have not done so, even as new figures show the pace of destruction of the Amazon rainforest is at its worst since 2006.
European food retailers, including Britain’s Tesco and M&S, have also shied away from threats to boycott Brazilian produce, saying now that they favour a united approach by industry and government to stop the felling of the world’s largest rainforest.
The lack of action has prompted concerns about the commitment of asset managers and retailers to take effective action if environmental targets are not met. It has also led to worries that the administration of President Jair Bolsonaro — who has long advocated opening the rainforest to commercial development — could feel emboldened if it believes boycotts will not happen.
“The latest data highlights that true change has unfortunately not yet occurred [in the Brazilian Amazon]. This increasingly concerns us as we do not want to be accused of ‘engagement washing’ — meaning having some dialogue to look good, yet not achieving real progress,” said Thede Rüst, head of emerging markets debt at Nordea Asset Management — just one of two investment groups out of seven to follow through on their threats of divestment.
“If nothing happens, [then] this may potentially harm future engagements as countries learn that they can deflect criticism by engaging without taking actions,” said Rüst, noting that Nordea had in August last year divested shares of Brazilian meatpacker JBS worth $40m over its environmental record.
