I’m 16 and have only ever been attracted to girls and non-binary people. When I came out as lesbian recently (6ish months ago), my mom had a really hard time accepting me. My mom just got to a place where she somewhat respects my sexuality… but now I like one of my super close guy friends. What if this undoes all the progress with my mom (she always told me my sexuality was “just a phase” and thought I was lying to secretly date guys)?! I definitely still like girls and enbies, maybe I’m also demi-heterosexual? I’m still more identifying as a lesbian because attraction to men happens once in a blue moon. I’m just really confused :(

Any advice or ideas for sexuality labels would be great. Thank you so much!

I'm sorry its been rough getting your mom to accept your identity. There are a few ways you can go about this.

1. Who says you have to tell her? Crush on your guy friend, and if you end up dating, cool! No one ever said your mom had to know tho. You don't have to tell her about your crush or even if You DO end up dating a guy.

2. Adjust your label. Youre not saying youre straight, youre clearly closer to bi/pan (whatever term you prefer) you just have a strong preference for girls and enbies, me too! You can say "I think i like guys too just not very often, im far more easily attracted to girls and enbies." I dont think the term lesbian is accurate anymore though since its not just girls and enbies. Youre still sapphic though. You can say youre very sapphic but you do like guys occasionally. Of you can say youre bi/pan with a strong preference for girls and enbies.

3. Do whatever feels right because at the end of the day this is your life, your feelings, and no one can tell you what to do. Sexuality can be fluid. Labels change. So what? Doesnt mean anything. Youre valid in whatever your current feelings are, it doesnt matter if you realize you mightve been wrong about something.
