Pleased is an understatement to discover the use of Daniel Schaller’s writings in both Philipp Blom’s “Nature’s Mutiny” as evidence of the Little Ice Age, as well as Stuart Clark’s “Witchcraft and Magic in Early Modern Culture” regarding the proper response to witchcraft.

Totally Random Non-Fiction Tuesday

Copyright wasn’t always around. And, in this book the author explains how publishers that surrounded France’s borders pirated the works of French writers and then distributed them more widely than the Paris Guild would allow (not to mention, a lot of the writers’ works were banned in France as well). That’s not saying that some of these publishers weren’t making profit off these pirated works though.

As I’ve said before, people will always be people, and, the problems of the past and the problems of the present (publishing these days is supremely complicated still, even though we have copyright) are always closer than we ‘modern people’ assume they will be. And, this book got into every nook and cranny of publishing during the pre-revolutionary time. So many delightful details were crammed into this awesome book.

Il Primo Inverno: come il clima ci cambia

È uscito un nuovo episodio del nostro podcast! In questa settima puntata parliamo di uno dei miei libri preferiti, il romanzo storico "Il Primo Inverno - La piccola era glaciale e l'inizio della modernità europea" di Philipp Blom (Marsilio editore, 2017). È un bellissimo saggio storico sulla piccola glaciazione che colpì l’Europa nel XVII secolo e di come quel cambiamento climatico fu cruciale per la nascita di quella che oggi chiamiamo ‘civiltà occidentale’. L’autore traccia un parallelo interessante tra il cambiamento climatico del 1600 e quello che stiamo affrontando oggi nel XXI secolo, e inevitabilmente ci troviamo a riflettere su come il clima sia fondamentale nel dare forma alle culture, all’economia e in generale alle società umane.  Possiamo usare il passato come monito per costruire il futuro?
