Learning Commons in Santa Barbara
A student from Santa Barbara stated, "unlike old school libraries, where if you so much as say "hi" to someone you get shushed, every space here is designed for collaborative learning."
This space is effective because of its many open, modern and comfortable spaces designed for peer to peer collaboration.

The Library of Congress Reading Commons is yet another example of a learning commons. Its space is open and inclusive. Its many resources are open to the public. The library's circular nature is an ideal space for collaboration.

Learning Commons: Transforming Learning and Scholarship
This presentation talks about the many different physical qualities that are essential for a learning commons to have.  This includes seating variations with things like private and open spaces, movable screens, personal lighting, and zoned areas.  As well there are many other aspects including service points, flexible space, presentation area, computing variations, lounge classrooms, a gallery, a café, and more.  These show some of the many different physical aspects that must be thought about when planning a learning commons.  The examples of the Computing Center at Cox Hall at Emory University, the Perkins and Bostock Libraries at Duke, the East and West Commons at Georgia Tech, and the D.D. Hill Library at NCSU are used to show many successful examples of learning commons.

This video gives a nice example of how movable furniture gives people the ability to create different types of learning and working spaces.  It shows that with the same movable tables and chairs meeting spaces, collaborative table groups, presentation space, and more can be created.
This is perfect for learning commons because it allows groups to collaborate in many different ways.  This movable furniture is one of the bases for a successful learning commons.
Bretford Manufacturing, Inc. “designs and manufactures dependable furniture products built to improve how people work and learn.”  They offer “smart furniture solutions that support evolving technology.”

This Pinterest gives a very great compilation of many different types of learning commons furniture available.  There are different types of desks, chairs, shelves, couches, benches, etc. that can be used in learning commons to make the space look and feel collaborative.  A lot of this furniture is easily moved and promotes collaboration.
