using this platform as an excuse to talk about books — so here’s what i read 2023 and what i recommend:
[ the storyteller: tales of life and music - dave grohl ] i am a huge foo fighters fan and grew up with my mom loving dave grohl, the stories he tells in this book are not chronological; but they are beautiful. it makes me admire this man more than i did, he’s truly inspiring. 4.5/5 stars, -0.5 because i could not retain as well when it would jump from year to year.
[ suicide notes - michael thomas ford ] i did not enjoy this book for as much as it was overhyped. i understood the plot, i understood the story, it was gripping but not generally moving. a common coming-of-age young romance with mental illness; not bad yet not the best. 2/5 stars, -3 because i did not like how slow and basic the storyline was, though i liked few of the characters
[ daisy jones & the six - taylor jenkins reid ] OH IM A TAYLOR JENKINS REID GIRLIE NOW. i had previously heard of evelyn hugo but at the time djats series had just came out, and i was curious to read the book. i watched the pilot and was sold, you’d think a hippie gal who loves rock bands would pass this up ?? TJR’s book style is so easy for me to get into too, i could NOT put the book down. greta writing and great storyline, forever a camila kinner and truther. -4.5/5 stars, -0.5 bc i HATED billy dunne and book eddie loving.
[ 11/22/63 - stephen king ] i read this for extra credit in my language arts class and when i tell you i’ve been DYING to read this book since i saw my mom read it. my roman empire is the JFK presidency and assassination, and i’ve always enjoyed stephen king… so this was just a chefs kiss. although, mr stephen king holds onto scenes a little too long and it could’ve been a 600 page book, not 800. so sometimes i caught myself snoozing, but i loved the concept loved the book. time traveling + historical + thriller + romance = 4/5 starred book, -1 only because it was longer than it should’ve been
[ water for elephants - sara gruen ] this book is one of those “it gets good at the end” books. i put this book down twice and it took me majority of the year to get into it. i did not enjoy the beginning, but over time and chapters it became better. true story on a circus with what i’m guessing are fictional main characters. either way it was good, good paced, and interesting. definitely makes you look at circuses or any animal show differently. 3/5 stars, -2 just cause the beginning was slow
[ intensity - dean koontz ] …. now wtf. i read this bc my mom recommended it… don’t read it. it’s good it’s crazy it blows your mind, but it is so so fucked up. it’s a murder story and it’s just gross and weird. intensity is the right title, it was very intense. i was holding my breath on so many scenes, yet it was somehow enjoyable just because of how much of a thriller it was. 3/5, -2 only cause i would never read it again, and it was gross.
[ red, white, & royal blue - casey mcquiston ] i noticed this was a movie so i thought why not watch it, i don’t tend to watch stuff before i read it, but i wanted a judgement on this book. i loved the movie just bc it was so cutesy and the characters were so in love. and i got that right in the book. definitely your typical cheesy teenage romance book with light smut, and very gay. so as much as people critique it, i enjoyed it and it was what i needed to read or have in that moment. just a sappy and cutesy love story. 4/5 stars, -1 because i wasn’t left as content as i thought i’d be
[ the seven husbands of evelyn hugo - taylor jenkins reid ] taylor jenkins reid the woman that you are. i understood the hype, i loved the book, it was written so well. there’s twists and just emotion and i loved it. i tabbed the book and everything. i just loved it, it’s truly a gripping and great story. fuck men, except for one he was a sweetheart. plus it’s around marilyn monroe/rita hayworth actress era and i eat that shit up. 5/5 stars, she’s just that girl.
[ the book thief - markus zusak ] :( i love this book but oh is it sad. i reread it for a school unit. liesel meminger you’re a remarkable girl. 4/5 stars, point off bc we had to do assignments on it and i hated one section of the book.
[ the complete persepolis - marjane satrapi ] during the iran revolutions and conflicts with the shah and stuff. it was okay, not my favorite but not bad. also a graphic novel!! autobiography also, pretty neat. 3/5 stars, not my cup of tea and we had to do stupid assignments on them that made us think too hard abt it

something about stu and billy with a s/o that unironically likes shows like hell’s kitchen and kitchen nightmares? like their s/o started watching clips of it as a meme but now they’re a real fan and watched all the seasons of it
(definitely not me!)
ASDFGHJKL SO little known fact, but I'm actually a HUGE fan of Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares (also Hotel Hell lmao). These shows are just such endless sources of entertainment, especially when watching it with other people! Modern!AU of course.
---
Poly!Ghostface Watching Hell's Kitchen/Kitchen Nightmares:
Stu would probably join you pretty early on in watching it. Nay, scratch that: he absolutely would join you.
Billy finds the memes amusing, and has for sure seen clips of it before, but it isn't until you and Stu are about 3 seasons deep and he keeps curiously peeking over that he joins in.
Also because he felt left out lmao. Watching TV tends to be a Together activity for you guys.
Billy loooves trash talking the people in the shows, especially the more narcissistic restaurant owners. The more delusional they are, the more Billy loves ripping them a new one.
Bless you and Billy, because for MONTHS after the Nino episode in KN you can bet your ass that Stu will be yelling "I'M NINOOOOO!!" anytime he walks into the room. Hold Billy back so he doesn't kill him.
In a twist, Billy loves when the women's team proves the men's team wrong about their abilities. It's less to do with Billy being a sudden feminist and more in the sadistic pleasure he derives from seeing someone knocked down a peg. It's delicious.
Y/n: WHAT ARE YOU? - Stu: *CRIES* AN IDIOT SANDWICH
Billy, after you cook him anything ever again: Where tf is the lamb sauce?????
Stu, slipping in without a condom: It's föcken' RAAAAAW
Billy's favorite winner is Christina Wilson. Stu's favorite winner is either Heather West or Dave Levey.
Their least favorite chefs are too many to be named. Jason, Ranjit, Jen, Thomas, Russel, etc etc. What can I say, there aren't that many people Billy and Stu like in general besides themselves and you.
Stu was so disappointed when he found out Amy's Baking Company closed. He was so, so ready to drop the cash to get you all to fly out and visit them. He wanted to troll them so fucking BAD.
Billy loves Gordon Ramsey. Like so much. Out of the three of you, he's probably the biggest fan. On the outside he plays it cool, but on the inside he gets giddy when Gordon rips into someone.
If you bring up the idea of a horror movie with a chef as a slasher, prepare for some notebooks, alcohol, and snacks being busted out while you guys sit in a circle on the bed bouncing ideas off each other, laughing, and just shooting the shit. You have a blast staying up into the AM just coming up with the plot, characters, etc. and screenwriting this faux horror flick with your boyfriends. Billy especially has fun that night and it's a memory that sticks with him forever.
Stu cried out in anguish when he found out that Jean-Phillipe was no longer the maitre d' on HK. He fucking loved that guy. JP was his bro, man ✊😔
Stu wishes Gordon would bully the waiters on KN lol
Billy doesn't. He wouldn't admit it, and he isn't sure why he feels this way considering he's kinda terrible himself, but he's weirdly glad that Gordon is always nice to the waiters.
Kinda mirrors their killing habits tbh. Billy kills those who he felt either deserved it (Maureen, Sidney), he felt was necessary for the plan (Himbry) or both (Randy, Casey, Steve, Tatum). Stu just went along with it and didn't really care who he killed, simply excited to do it.
OR if this is an AU-AU where they didn't go through with some or all of it, then it's just bc Stu likes trolling people in general and Billy hates authority.
You can BET that Stu will wanna go visit Hell's Kitchen. He knows if you go you aren't guaranteed good service or a meal, but he wants to go just to watch Gordon in action.
Stu will also wanna visit the more bougie restaurants that the winners get to work at. Like the minute all three of you have the time, ya'll are going.
Billy wants to actually learn how to cook the perfect risotto. If he succeeds this goal (and he will eventually bc this man is patient and determined af), you can expect it everytime he cooks from then on lmao.
Maybe, juuuust maybe, if you guys are encouraging and help out, Billy surprisingly finds his calling and passion in cooking and grows up to be a Michelin Star chef LMAO.

Perfunctory Photo Recap: Alias 1x01
After starting off with Gossip Girl and swinging wildly in the other direction for my second post, I decided a happy medium for No. 3 would be that early-aughts ABC classic, Alias. The show premiered basically immediately after 9/11, and I started watching it in 2002 with its mid-season premiere – meaning I missed the first half of the first season and didn’t get to watch it until it RE-AIRED over the summer of 2002. (How did we ever live without streaming apps? Unfathomable.) Anyway, I was obsessed with this show when it was on, and I suspect it’ll hold up pretty well, even though we’re the better part of 20 years out from the pilot. Let’s get our spy on!
My Disclaimer: None of these posts will be in any way comprehensive, because I’m lazy. All of them are probably going to have spoilers of some sort for the entire series…or at least what I remember of it from when I last watched it an eon ago. Exactly what you want in a recap!
The Prophecy: Our heroine Sydney Bristow thinks she works for the CIA, but learns pretty quickly (after they murder her fiancé) that she’s been a bit of a dummy! She actually works for the bad guys – an organization called SD-6. Will she just sit back and accept it? That would make for a pretty short series!
Tumblr media
Fresh off his thrill-a-minute action masterpiece Felicity, J.J. Abrams stays brand consistent, opening his new series with some light waterboarding.
We cut almost immediately to Sydney in a college classroom (there we go, J.J.), where she’s scribbling furiously in a blue book and giving me anxiety-induced flashbacks. She meets up with her BF...
Tumblr media
Who proposes to her on “the quad” while singing “Build Me Up Buttercup” at the top of his lungs. I remember finding this adorably romantic in high school. If someone inflicted this on me now I would literally walk away and never speak to them again.
Tumblr media
Syd here seems to be contemplating the exact same thing. But she (somehow) gets over it and says yes.
Tumblr media
Wow, there it is! “The CIA.” Honestly, Sydney really should have figured out this wasn’t legit almost immediately. No way the vibe at ANY CIA office is industrial chic. There’s barely a fluorescent light to be found!
Tumblr media
LOOK AT BABY BRADLEY COOPER! (Yes, this screengrab was very strategic.)
Tumblr media
He’s so crestfallen when she tells him she’s engaged to Doug or Dave or whatever his name is. Poor BB. Don’t worry Bradley! He’ll have shuffled this mortal coil by halfway through the episode.
Annnnd this is why:
Tumblr media
Big no-no!
He freaks out and I guess runs off. When they meet up again it’s at some oil-pumping hoosit in Bakersfield or some such, and she gives him some cringeworthy line about having always hoped she’d find someone to give her life meaning and he’s the one etc. etc. GROAN.
Then she jets off on her latest mission, where the best part is she gets to use her real accent for about 10 seconds.
Tumblr media
As a southern(ish) lady myself, I always get a little delight when I hear a good southern accent! Everyone seems to think they can do a flawless one, but it’s almost impossible to find someone who’s not from the region and can do it properly. The attempts are usually skin-crawlingly bad.
Anyway, after the mission, she returns home to a not-very-nice surprise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
J. Garn is VERY good in this scene.
After a wee confrontation with her boss about the small matter of murdering her fiancé, we cut back to the torture scene, where Sydney’s got some jokes!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LOLLL!!!!1! But to be fair they did shoot her full of a big ol’ syringe of something we’ll assume is affecting her frontal lobe, or whatever. You try being funny in the middle of a drug-enhanced torture session.
Anyway, we cut back to Dorian’s funeral, where we get eyes on Will’s (Bradley Cooper’s) sister, who happens to have fire-engine red hair and be dressed like a British goth-punk from the ‘70s. Super approps funereal attire. And also probably nothing to do with Syd’s lil future disguise – just a total coincidence.
Tumblr media
Then over to this image of me, every night of this COVID-19 quarantine. Note the bottle within arm’s reach. By tomorrow I’ll probably be foregoing the glass altogether.
When we check back in with our girl, it’s been 3 months since she’s been into the office. Prob b/c of the whole “murdered her fiancé” thing but who can say really. Anyway folks aren’t super pleased!
Tumblr media
Like really not super pleased.
There’s a whole fighting thing, and as Syd’s struggling to escape her dad dadus ex machinas on up:
Tumblr media
He tells her the people she’s working for are actually the bad guys. And she’s like NUH UH! And he’s like “So then how come you’ve never been to Langley? Also come on have you seen the offices?”
Tumblr media
Not really being able to argue with his logic but also not really trusting him, Syd runs off and steals Will’s sister’s identity (SHOCKING TWIST!). Because as all great spies know, you want to stand out as much as possible – so best practice is to dye your hair the brightest color you can manage and dress like it’s Halloween so that everyone will notice you.
Anywho, all of that somehow works, and we arrive at the part of the narrative where she gets captured and tortured. But because she’s the star of the show, it probably won’t come as too much of a surprise that she escapes! She runs off to find the thing she was supposed to find at the beginning of the show:
Tumblr media
A highly coveted floating clown nose! (No but actually it’s much more sinister than that and is a big deal later in the series.)
She gives it to her boss so he knows she’s back onboard:
Tumblr media
Then heads straight for CIA HQ, where she writes down her story for this handsome fellow and offers to be a double agent for them:
Tumblr media
Sigh. I remember being very into these two as an IRL couple and finding out they broke up immediately before a French test. I also remember I did not do excellently on said French test. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that I had no interest in studying. I would probably be fluent now if it weren’t for them.
Anyway, the CIA verifies her statement and sends an asset to let her know that she’s in:
Tumblr media
Yes that’s what I just said.
It turns out that papa Bristow is ALSO a CIA double agent! What a good reveal to end on! Great job J.J.!
Debriefing:
- After spending 20 minutes searching for a free, not-illegal way to watch this sucker online (because I’m a cheap bitch), I finally gave in, swam around in my massive hope chest and literally dusted off this DVD, which it turns out I still own. Did I buy a DVD player just so I could watch my Alias, OC and Friends DVDs? Who can say!
- I didn’t realize they introduced the Rambaldi mythology in the first episode. It’s actually pretty impressive they could maintain that as a narrative thread throughout the show. Also we’ve got a “47″ alert at 12 minutes in.
- They have Jennifer Garner speaking a ton of languages throughout this show, as I recall. I wonder if she’s any good at any of them? She sounds vaguely convincing in the pilot, to me, but what do I know?
- I think we can all agree that Merrin Dungey is a national treasure and deserves to be a bigger star than she is. I’m always so happy to see her when she pops up in other things. And she’s great in this show.
- Overall, the Alias pilot holds up REALLY well. It does an amazing job of giving depth to all of the characters and really making the audience care about them – even the ones who only appear for a few minutes. The plotting is strong, and the groundwork for the rest of the series is laid without being even remotely heavy on eye-rolly exposition. Plus the actors’ performances are all *CHEF’S KISS*

ok wait I just wanna say, if you actually care about supporting writers of color and their writing then buy their books.
one of the best parts of contemporary literature is being able to follow an author who is creating books actively. You can see their growth across each consecutive work. Buying their book is a great way to support their work, and the money goes to a living author!
if you want contemporary fiction recs as a place to start, look under the cut
Here are some books by writers that I enjoyed reading last year:
The Vanished Birds by Simon Jimenez
-- I’ll never shut up about this book. Space opera that really just. blew my mind. The writing is impeccable, the characters are compelling. Morally grey characters done very well in my opinion! The ending arc was my only critique, as it kind of petered off but! the experience of reading this for the first time was so so good, cannot recommend it enough. (cw: abuse, grief, family member death, major character deaths, uh I hope I’m not blanking on more but that’s all I can remember rn.
Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid
-- I still think about her writing style to this day. The writing is complex and filled with detail and implications. Also such a well-researched exploration of the social attitudes surrounding wealth and privilege. And it does a great job of critiquing the white liberal ally as a person who harms more than helps (and only engages in antiracism for the social credit of doing so). It’s a great read, very worth it. (cw: racism, there is a tense scene that almost verges on police brutality near the beginning)
The Silence of Bones by June Hur
-- This one hit me hard, especially near the end. It’s a well-paced mystery thriller set in Joseon era Korea. The way it slowly unravels the mystery is so well done, all while keeping the pace pretty quick. Once the action picked up I was hooked. I also love Seol as a main character, she was very compelling to me. This is YA technically but I think it’s more New YA with how mature and intense it is. (cw: family death, abuse, murder, mutilation of the face; I read this a bit ago so I might be blanking on some)
The Deep by Rivers Solomon
-- here’s the concept from its summary: “The water-breathing descendants of African slave women tossed overboard have built their own underwater society—and must reclaim the memories of their past to shape their future in this brilliantly imaginative novella inspired by the Hugo Award nominated song “The Deep” from Daveed Diggs’ rap group Clipping.” assume a lot of trigger warnings going in, however. It’s very well-written, but it does not flinch away from the pain of the experience it seeks to depict. (cw: slavery, racism, murder, suicidal thoughts, self-destructive behavior, self-harm, implied rape, I think I got them all but? I might have missed something, I read this a while ago).
Real Life by Brandon Taylor
-- bought this one in print so I could revisit the writing because it is incredible. Talks about a black graduate student in a white-dominated graduate program. REALLY GOOD. I read this as a burnt out graduate student and I cannot express accurately how much it resonated with me. (cw: sexual assault, family member death, grief)
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
-- Incredible science fiction blended with fantasy. The world feels like its own thing, it’s very unique in my opinion. Also the way that Jemisin writes about institutionalized oppression and prejudice is so compelling. The characterization, the plot twists, and the development of each storyline is just *chef’s kiss*. I haven’t read the other two books in the trilogy yet but I really want to! I have heard great things. Oh, also another one with a lot of triggering content. (cw: prejudice/institutionalized oppression, eugenics, death in general (including of children), gore, abuse, I might be forgetting some but those are the big ones)
The Vanishing Half by  Britt Bennett
--historical fiction, exploration of colorism and the effects of internalized racism across an inter-generational cast. The narrative voices across the different perspectives and generation are really well done. Also canon trans man, who is characterized very well in my opinion. (cw: racism, sexual assault, domestic abuse, lynching)
The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones
-- weird visceral horror with social commentary. It was a little hard for me to follow (I think because I read the audiobook) but super worth the read. I love Stephen Graham Jones’s flavor of horror so much. (cw: racism, murder and gore, sibling death, grief, major character deaths)
Pet by Akwaeke Emezi
--it’s a YA novel but it dives into issues of morality, good/evil in the setting of a utopia and the writing is stellar. Simple but powerful. Also a short read. The main character is a trans girl and the plot has nothing to do with that (she has an adventure about something unrelated). (cw: abuse, mentions of war/revolution, injury descriptions)
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng
-- This book addresses issues of race, privilege, and social decorum in small-town Ohio. It also explores what it means to be a mother, and to raise a child. It’s an entertaining story that cuts to the heart of the issues it seeks to interrogate with a careful edge. The book is nuanced in how it handles these issues. The show is not LMAO, I couldn’t finish it because the changes they made from the book were so annoying but. The book is really worth reading imo. (some ppl did not like the characterization, like they are a bit stereotypical in some cases but! still worth reading in my opinion).
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado
-- Memoir, it’s a reflection on domestic abuse in a sapphic relationship. Written by a bisexual woman, this story is told across genre. Each snippet breaks down her experience, one facet at a time. Incredible, the writing is just so memorable and visceral and it really connects, in my opinion. (cw: domestic abuse, descriptive passages of verbal and domestic abuse, self-worth issues, fatphobia, biphobia, I think that’s most of them)
The Magical Language of Others by E.J. Koh
-- Memoir, a reflection on the author’s experience growing up separated from her mother and father, who lived in South Korea while she and her brother lived in the U.S. After a separation that lasted years, she reviews that part of her life by looking back over the letters her mother sent her during that period of isolation. The writing is so strong in this work, it says a lot with a few words and I appreciate how well it conveys meaning. (cw: suicide attempt, mental health issues, infidelity, neglectful parents, racism, death, war)
if you want more detailed trigger warnings for any of these (because some do have some intense stuff) lmk, I can write up more if needed.
Also here’s some books I have not yet read (so I cannot wholeheartedly recommend) that I’m excited to read soon:
- The Three Body Problem by Cixin Lu
- The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang
- All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson
and also please listen to people of color who are reviewing and boosting these works. Own voices reviews are very important to gauge a work and its exploration of a certain experience. If you are interested in a book, make sure you keep in mind who the reviewer is and how that might inform their review of the book.

CaptainSwan Fanfictions Rec
Hello Beautiful Fandom, here is some of my favorites ONE-SHOTS of our now married couple!!! Some are old, some are new, hope you enjoy!
We Got Us,     lifeinahole
How they got together is mostly a run-of-the-mill story. Boy meets girl. Girl meets boy. A strange and complicated courtship followed. All that really matters to either of them is that they're happy. They're in love. They're miles away from anyone who cares if they are in a relationship or not. Which means their peace can't last, of course.
The Morning, and Then Some, of the Day After,   Sambethe
This wasn't exactly the trip he'd had in mind. He'd be an idiot to say he minded in the least.

Prince Killian of Misthaven was never meant to rule-as the second son, he was content to let the limelight and responsibility fall upon his older brother, the Crown Prince Liam, while he lived a carefree life of adventure, tempting danger at every turn-much to the consternation of his body guard and best friend, Captain Emma Swan.
After Liam’s untimely death, the entire Kingdom is thrown into a tailspin, and none worse than Killian and Emma. Killian must now step up to the role he was never meant to play, and Emma must deal with the consequences of falling in love with her charge, the Prince who would be King.

Classroom Distractions,  beardetective
Everybody taking one of Professor Killian Jones' lectures knew Mrs. Jones. Or, if they didn't know she was actually his wife, they knew the blonde woman who he called "Swan" and who occasionally snuck into the room and made their professor's always excited grin grow even wider. When Emma was born she was marked with, in her opinion, the worst soulmate mark anyone could ever have. People are born marked with the first words their true love would ever say to them, and Emma's happened to spoil one of the greatest plot twists of all time.

That's all there is - she's his patient's mother and he's her son's doctor. Until that isn't all there is.
Take a Picture It'll Last Longer,  imhookedonaswan
Emma Swan doesn't want to lie about her relationship with Killian Jones, friend and roommate of her best friend's boyfriend, but she cannot face Mary Margaret's "I told you so" face. The easiest thing to do is just pretend to hate each other.
