Catching Fire: The Anita Pallenberg Story

Sobering tale of a woman derailed by self-absorbed blokes

If there’s one lesson I took from this film, it’s this: if anyone starts lamenting the loss of danger in rock music, just slap them. And don’t hold back. Because if relatively early in this documentary you’re thinking ‘Wheeeeee! Don’t the ‘60s look glamorous and fun!’ by the final third, it’s become very sobering indeed. Even if Anita Pallenberg’s surviving kids Marlon and Angela Richards seem OK, the fact that they have wildly different accents turns out to be a hint of how deeply screwed-up their childhoods were.

Pallenberg – if for some strange reason you’re reading this without having heard of her – was a German-Italian model and actress whose promising career* got sidetracked by her successive romantic involvements with Rolling Stones guitarists Brian Jones and Keith ‘Keef’ Richards.

She’s absolutely central to the Stones myth, the late ’60s/early ‘70s period when they helped invent the idea of rock music as something separate from pop, and seemed dark and mysterious and full of ambiguity, as opposed to the sturdy old troupers they’ve been since.

Keith Richards readily credits Pallenberg for his look – his transition from the poloneck-sweater era to scarves and billowing shirts was accomplished by wearing her clothes. She gave the Stones a lot – what she got in return is more in question.

The film is built around Pallenberg’s unpublished memoir, with her words read by Scarlett Johansson (I spent chunks of the film trying to place the voice.) This is woven in with interviews with her friends and family. I’ve watched a lot of documentaries about the 1960s and the survivors from that time have a tendency to be gratingly self-congratulatory and utterly lacking in perspective or any sense of what’s interesting to the rest of the world rather than to them.

Either the directors have done a very good job keeping their interviewees on track, or they picked them well. Even Stash Klossowski de Rola, a bit of a character who apparently is now big on Tik Tok, stays relevant.

To me, though, the more valuable – if distressing – part of the film is the part covering the 1970s, when Pallenberg, struggling with addiction, firstly had to play host to the making of Exile On Main St in her house and then was instructed to stay home while Keith embarked on never-ending tours.

This is when we hear from Marlon Richards and also from Jake Weber, these days a reliable character actor but in 1971 a kid whose dealer dad brought him along to hang out in the Exile house. Weber is always excellent value talking about this stuff, while it’s just impressive that Marlon Richards emerged as anything other than a total wreck.

As a piece of film-making, Catching Fire is a reasonably conventional documentary. It benefits from how much is on film – Pallenberg in her actress days and then the whole Stones circle. It does dabble a bit in a psychedelic feel for some of the 1960s stuff, but then settles down to tell a powerful if deeply depressing story.

Classic rock stars? Bunch of twats. *Watching the clips from Barbarella, it's weird to think that Pallenberg was actually three years younger than Jane Fonda.

Height: 5′7 History: Candi has always loved the Jersey Devil story, enough so she fights any and all threats to the Devil and other supernatural beings. She’s always been the weird kid or adult but she never cared. She meets Tahyo when she’s left, beaten, bloody and sore, on his doorstep, proving more headstrong than her captors planned. She refuses to admit why she got her ass kicked but she does seem to trust Tahyo, despite her general mistrust of others.

The Emilia Wickstead dress

For an engagement at Harvard University's Center on the Developing Child, Catherine wore a bespoke version of Emilia Wickstead's 'Miles' pencil dress.

Catherine carried a pale blue Mulberry 'Harlow' bag. The label is a savvy choice for this trip, as the heritage brand now boasts a transparent and sustainable 'farm to finished product' supply chain.

The Solace London gown

Catherine walked the Earthshot Prize Awards green carpet in a Solace London gown, which was rented from Hurr. The neon hue also reflected the evening's planet-conscious theme.

The gown was teamed with Queen Mary's Art Deco emerald and diamond choker, which was previously on lifetime loan to Princess Diana. The diamond and emerald earrings are new, by Asprey.

The Alexander McQueen coat

For a walk along Boston Harbour on Thursday, Catherine wore a new bespoke Alexander McQueen coat and bespoke Gianvito Rossi brown suede boots, her go-to brand for formal footwear.

The Gabriela Hearst knitwear

Underneath her coat, the Princess wore a vibrant new cashmere and silk poloneck and skirt set by New York-based Gabriela Hearst, a fashion industry leader when it comes to sustainable manufacturing and business practices.

The Daniella Draper earrings

She completed the look with her gold and diamond maxi Cupid hoops by Daniella Draper.

For a visit to Greentown Labs, North America’s largest climate technology start-up incubator, Catherine wore a burgundy tailored suit by London-based label Roland Mouret, which featured a fitted jacket and 1970s-inspired flared trousers.

The Princess accessorised with earrings by Shyla London (the Biarritz Squiggle style) and a chunky gold chain necklace by sustainable US jewellery label Laura Lombardi.

Courtside seats at the basketball call for some glamour, and Catherine delivered a fashion flex in a 1995 vintage Chanel tweed jacket.

Anyhow yeah Soul of the Party! I'm slightly hype for this thing! If you want on some sort of taglist for updates which I am fully planning on doing through the month. Let me know. He and Selene decide to investigate instead, because that's perfectly safe

Most of everyone gets dragged along in their wake

The Magic Thieves are here for their own Crimes, but UHOH they're the target for these ones

[In increasingly smaller font] The Gates are grouped in a couple of places in each world these days, anyone travelling by them needs the correct papers before a guide will take them. Originally they were unstable and dangerous and under the whim of the Fair Folk. Anyone walking through couldn't control where - or when - they'd come out. That's how Skren got lost! A couple thousand years ago the Arch Mages sealed the gates in place at the expense of locking a couple of worlds [The text cuts off]

This story is set on Tatariel! Magic type is Soul Magic

It's not one of the nicer ones

They can control people. Mostly it's about using the "power of their soul"/energy of their life to enact change
