AU Thursday: Valicer In The Dark -- Duskwall Slang
Since we did a VITD lookbook yesterday, I figured we might as well keep the train going today and talk a little bit about some of the worldbuilding I've done for the Valicer In The Dark version of Duskwall (the main setting of Blades In The Dark). Specifically, I've decided to share the short list of slang that I've come up with for people to use! Because that's always fun, right? :) The first entry on this list is taken from the book itself (page 42, specifically) and adapted a little bit, but all the rest are purely my own invention:
-->“Flashing a/their/your Coin” and variants – making an ostentatious display of wealth, to the disgust of everyone around them (the term "Coin" itself is in fact slang for a large sum of money, taken from the days when the Imperial treasury would actually mint large solid gold coins intended to cover major transactions; most people these days rely on small silver pieces called "slugs"). Example: “You spent all that money on THAT outfit? Really flashing your Coin, huh?”
-->“Moving to Six Towers” – indicates that the person said to be moving was previously rich and important, but has fallen on extremely hard times and is on the verge of ruin (referencing the fact that Six Towers USED to be one of the richest neighborhoods in the city, but has turned into a bit of a slum with most of the nobility previously living there moving into Brightstone). Example: “The Everglots’ leviathan ship hasn’t had a good haul in six months. Think they’ll be moving to Six Towers soon.”
-->“Scavenging in the Lost District” – indicates that the person said to be scavenging is taking an INCREDIBLE risk in the hopes of getting a high reward (due to the Lost District being an abandoned neighborhood outside the lightning barrier keeping the city safe and guarded by the Spirit Wardens...but also having many lost riches within its bounds). Example: “You want to rob Lord Mayor Powerwallet? Talk about scavenging in the Lost District!”
-->“Living Coin to Coin” – living paycheck to paycheck, as the average weekly wage in Duskwall is equivalent to a Coin’s worth of money. Example: “Poor old Tom – what with his sick mother and five children needing feeding, he’s living Coin to Coin.”
-->“Only good for mushrooms” – indicates that the thing being talked about is absolute shit. Example: “Don’t order the ‘special ale’ at the Withered Talon, it’s only good for mushrooms.”
-->“You want to call the crows?” – equivalent of “You want to get us killed?” in response to a risky course of action (referencing the Deathseeker crows that find corpses for the Spirit Wardens). Example: “You want to FIGHT Lord Mayor Powerwallet’s bodyguards? You want to call the crows?!”
-->“Barrowcleft approved” – indicates the item in question is homemade but of very high quality (Barrowcleft being a poor, rural neighborhood with one of the best, and fairest, markets in the city). Example – “You carved this yourself? Why, this is Barrowcleft approved work and no mistake!”
-->“Dust Day fare” – an extremely meager meal made from poor-quality ingredients, referencing the popular nickname for the fifth day of the week from Charhollow, which itself references the fact that poor people’s food stores are the thinnest on this day. Example – “Canal water soup with potato peelings. This is Dust Day fare, all right.”
-->“Crit Six/rolled a crit six” – means that something is exceedingly good, or that something that you have done has succeeded beyond your wildest dreams; references the most popular dice game in Duskwall, where rolling double sixes is an automatic win. Example – “I went to open the safe, and I rolled a crit six – the door practically came off in my hands!”
-->“Welcher” – a term for someone who hires a criminal or crew for a job, and then not only refuses to pay them, but actively tries to murder them (directly or otherwise) to avoid doing so. Only one of the highest leaders of the most well-known crews may declare someone a Welcher, and then only after receiving sufficient proof, as the term is a death sentence – the scoundrels of Duskwall do not take kindly to their clients trying to stiff them, in both senses of the word. Example: “All right, I’ve seen enough – I’m ready to declare that Lord E.A. Bethesda is a Welcher. Hope he’s prepared for every scoundrel in the city coming for his ass...”
Further updates to come if and when I think of more stuff! Which I probably will, as this is fun. :)

Quicken 2016 update 8 fails
Tumblr media
#Quicken 2016 update 8 fails manual
#Quicken 2016 update 8 fails software
#Quicken 2016 update 8 fails download
#Quicken 2016 update 8 fails free
#Quicken 2016 update 8 fails manual
qif format if your bank(s) still support it to cut down on your manual data entry.Īfter downloading the. I don't have a clue about currency rates because that's not something I have exposure to.
#Quicken 2016 update 8 fails download
But you should expect to encounter some connectivity issues regardless of which tool you use.No, BUT at least for the stocks, you can set up a CVS download that can be manually imported. I've found Personal Capital to be the one tool with the fewest problems. I have yet to use one that didn't have at least one or two problems.
#Quicken 2016 update 8 fails software
One persistent problem with all personal finance software is issues connecting to financial institutions. It also highlights your top spending categories. It does use an advertising model for revenue, so be prepared to see some advertisements. In the dashboard, it shows your cash inflows, outflows, and what's left. PowerWallet uses a cash flow model of budgeting. I was unable to link a retirement account at Fidelity and credit cards from Citi. I found the linking process to be smooth, with two exceptions. This online budget tool enables you to link bank accounts, credit cards, loans, and investment accounts. The last Mint and Quicken alternative on our list is PowerWallet. For example, save $200 and you'll see Baby Step #1 (save $1,000 for emergencies), increase by $200. Without the paid version, however, it's an entirely manual process.įor those following Dave's Baby Steps, they are integrated into the budget. The budget is broken down into categories, such as housing, transportation, and food. The paid version adds, among other things, online connectivity to your financial institutions.
#Quicken 2016 update 8 fails free
It comes in both a free and paid version. It is an online budgeting and money management tool. But it's an important consideration, particularly when tools such as Personal Captial are free.įor Dave Ramsey fans, EveryDollar is a good option. However, if I want to automatically download transactions, I must pay a yearly fee of nearly $45. The software set me back $64.99, which by itself would be fine. What I've found most appealing about Banktivity is that it just works. I've successfully connected investment accounts from major brokers, a mortgage on an investment property from Chase, and credit cards from Citi, Capital One and other issuers. I've found connecting accounts to be, while not perfect, workable. Once connected, Banktivity manages your entire financial life in one place. Much like Quicken, you can connect bank accounts, credit cards, mortgages, and even investment accounts. It may take some time to get there, but I've found YNAB the best tool to support this type of prudent financial management.įor those with a Mac looking for software, Banktivity is an excellent choice. As a result, you're not living paycheck to paycheck. The goal is to live off of money you earned the previous month. Once you've used the software for about a month, you'll rarely need to categorize expenses manually.Īnd YNAB follows a very interesting approach to budgeting. Categories can be assigned to your spending automatically. It uses a familiar spreadsheet format that's very easy to use. I've tried virtually every budgeting tool available, and YNAB is without question the most effective. It even provides useful data on 529 accounts you may have for your children and tracks the value of real estate.įor those focused exclusively on their budget, there's nothing better than YNAB (short for You Need a Budget). You can see if you are on track to retire as planned. This is particularly helpful if you, like me, have multiple retirement and taxable accounts.įinally, Personal Captial offers a retirement planning tool. From asset allocation to investing fees, this tool gives you easy insight into your investment portfolio. Once linked, Personal Capital provides a wealth of information about your portfolio. It enables you to link all of your investment accounts.

Powerwallet and DOQ: Wireless Wallet + Wireless Wallet Charging Dock In One
Wallets. They generally serve a single(ish) purpose: carrying cash, IDs and credit cards. So when I stumbled upon the Powerwallet and DOQ and had to do a double take. Now, don't get me wrong. Wallets and slim batteries, combined together, to charge a smartphone, has long existed. So suffice to say that's far from a new idea. So what makes this product different? The built-in battery, found in the wallet - which mind you includes a built-in charging cable - can be wirelessly charged via the included dock. Hence DOQ. But that's not all. Not only does the DOQ charge the included battery wallet, but can charge the iPhone X since both sides are Qi certified. And - yes "and" - there is a spot for placing an Apple Watch charger which can be plugged in via one of two USB ports found on the side of the DOQ. Total footprint: 5" by 3". Three devices charged in spot and no messy wires. So put more succinctly, it's 1 dock for 3 devices.
Powerwallet & DOQ Shipping Timeline

A Basic Mid-Year Tax Planning Method for Blue Springs Taxpayers
Well, we are right in the thick of summer. It’s hot.
It’s also tempting to just sit back and hit the cruise control for the next 6 weeks or so, and do nothing different, make no changes, plan no plans.
Like many, you’re probably averting your eyes from the national political scene — because whichever “side” you favor, nobody seems to be covering themselves with glory these days — but one thing that I urge you to NOT avert your eyes from (however tempted you might be at times) is the state of your finances for 2017.
The last couple weeks I’ve given you some “big picture” strategy for how to move forward on reaching financial independence, but I didn’t write a great deal about how our own particular specialty plays into this: taxes.
So, in that spirit, I’ve put together a few things that WOULD behoove you to look at, in terms of your Blue Springs family situation — not just with your finances, but also your taxes — here, at around the midpoint of 2017.
A Basic Mid-Year Tax Planning Method for Blue Springs Taxpayers “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” -Dan Millman
The tax return preparation process is always an “historical” look at what happened during the year … whereas DURING the year, there are always things we can do to “write” history, so to speak.
What I will advise you on now is “quick and dirty” tax planning for wage earners. There’s usually much more that can be done, even if you don’t have complicated investments or Blue Springs business ownership. That’s worth a conversation (so call or email our office!). But here’s a good place to start…
To begin, all you have to do is take your cash flow for the first half of the year, and multiply by two. Add up your wages, dividends, interest, and any other income, and then — if this represents approximately what you’re expecting for the second half of the year — double the sum.
Once you have your estimated 2017 income, give us a call (or send me an email), and we’ll help you determine the appropriate tax rate and deductions to apply. Because once you’re armed with this info, we can help you determine the amount of taxes you might expect to owe for the 2017 tax year.
By then comparing this against your projected withholding, you can adjust the withholding on your paycheck in advance as needed, and ensure a happy visit to our office in the early winter.
This can also be a good time to organize your financial records or get started with some financial software. (YNAB, PowerWallet, etc.) Getting organized now can make gathering a report of all those deductions a breeze, come tax time.
And another thing: wealthier Americans, in particular, are facing higher tax rates on ordinary and investment income.
That makes it all the more important to review Uncle Sam’s highest-impact tax breaks, such as donations of appreciated assets, tax-free exchanges and capital-loss harvesting.
Unlike obvious moves, such as contributing to an individual retirement account or a 401(k) plan, these strategies require a higher degree of awareness and active planning.
But not all high-impact breaks are for the “wealthy”. Any homeowner can benefit from a provision allowing taxpayers to pocket tax-free income from renting a residence for as long as two weeks, and low-bracket taxpayers can pay zero tax on long-term capital gains.
Other important moves can help minimize estate, gift and inheritance taxes. Really, there are a variety of moves we can make to help you with your planning for the year … but you have to let us help you. It is, after all, why we are here.
And it starts with the snapshot of where you are right now.
Warmly,
Mike Mead, EA, CTC Alliance Financial & Income Tax  807 NW Vesper Street Blue Springs, MO. 64015  P - 816-220-2001 x201   F - 816-220-2012  AFITOnline.com

Sims Wednesday: So What Now?
AKA, what do I have planned for Wednesdays now that I’ve put Newcrest Adventures on hiatus? Well, I have a couple of ideas:
1. More “Chill Save” adventures, of course -- I’ve grown rather attached to this Victor and Alice pair, and I’d like to play some more with them. I even have a rough “storyline” in mind:
-->Finishing off college and getting their degrees
-->Moving to Henford-On-Bagley into a haunted house
-->Becoming cottagecore occults (Alice of course becoming a vampire again, with Victor becoming a medium and spellcaster)
Sounds fun, right? And fairly chill too, which is the point of that save. :)
2. Starting my “Challenge Save” -- I’ve posted here before about some challenges I’ve created and would like to do -- namely my VTMB Challenge and Fallout 4 Challenge. I’d like to set up a save file specifically for them (doing Malkavian!Alice for the first and Sole Survivor!Victor for the second, obviously), along with one other I’m working on, called “The Worst Lot In The World.” It’s inspired by James Turner’s “Every Lot Challenge” LP, where your Sim needs to survive on a lot that that has EVERY Lot Challenge turned on, PLUS some bad lot traits, PLUS it’s in StrangerVille pre-Mystery-Solving. I’m coming up with an even TOUGHER version than he’s running that kind of functions as a “Super Sim Lite.” XD I’ll be sharing that once it’s done too! Dunno who I’ll be using for that one -- I kinda wanted to do the offspring of James’s Sims Max Power and Lady Bigwallet (calling the result “Randall Powerwallet), but James doesn’t seem to have them up on his Gallery page. . .I’ll figure something out!
3. More builds -- stuff like my Ice Cream Conery and Bowl-N-Skate. I do occasionally like to build things, and I’m happy enough to share pictures when I do. Currently working on a house build -- maybe that’ll be complete by the time next week rolls around! (Depending on what happens with the patch, obviously. . .)
4. A “Vemilicia” Save -- this is kind of a new idea -- I’d kind of like to do a save with Victor, Alice, Victoria, AND Emily, and get them together. I’ve even got an idea of starting them all out as teenagers, and using Mayhew, Lizzie, Hildegarde, and Bonejangles as “parents”/older siblings as necessary. Might be fun to do a poly save and do some different stuff from my normal saves (like having them all live in Britechester together while attending college, and having two of them go to University of Britecheter and two go to Foxbury). That’ll take even more set-up, though, so we’ll see how that goes!
So yeah -- definitely some options here for keeping the Simming going. :p Though “Chill Save” and the builds are what you’re gonna see first, most likely. Especially since I’ve got some mods that I’d like to finally download and test. . .
