The Best News of Last Year

1. Belgium approves four-day week and gives employees the right to ignore their bosses after work

Workers in Belgium will soon be able to choose a four-day week under a series of labour market reforms announced on Tuesday.

The reform package agreed by the country's multi-party coalition government will also give workers the right to turn off work devices and ignore work-related messages after hours without fear of reprisal.

"We have experienced two difficult years. With this agreement, we set a beacon for an economy that is more innovative, sustainable and digital. The aim is to be able to make people and businesses stronger," Belgian prime minister Alexander de Croo told a press conference announcing the reform package.

2. Spain makes it a crime for pro-lifers to harass people outside abortion clinics

Spain has criminalized the harassment or intimidation of women going for an abortion under new legislation approved on Wednesday by the Senate. The move, which involved changes to the penal code, means anti-abortion activists who try to convince women not to terminate their pregnancies could face up to a year behind bars.

3. House passes bill to federally decriminalize marijuana

The House has voted with a slim bipartisan majority to federally decriminalize marijuana. The vote was 220 to 204.

The bill, sponsored by Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, will prevent federal agencies from denying federal workers security clearances for cannabis use, and will allow the Veterans’ Administration to recommend medical marijuana to veterans living with posttraumatic stress disorder.

The bill also expunges the record of people convicted of non-violent cannabis offenses, which House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said, “can haunt people of color and impact the trajectory of their lives and career indefinitely.”

4. France makes birth control free for all women under 25

The scheme, which could benefit three million women, covers the pill, IUDs, contraceptive patches and other methods composed of steroid hormones.

Contraception for minors was already free in France. Several European countries, including Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and Norway, make contraception free for teens.

5. The 1st fully hydrogen-powered passenger train service is now running in Germany. The only emissions are steam & condensed water.

Five of the trains started running in August. Another nine will be added in the coming months to replace 15 diesel trains on the regional route. Alstom says the Coradia iLint has a range of 1,000 kilometers, meaning that it can run all day on the line using a single tank of hydrogen. A hydrogen filling station has been set up on the route between Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervörde and Buxtehude.

6. Princeton will cover all tuition costs for most families making under $100,000 a year, after getting rid of student loans

In September, the New Jersey Ivy League school announced it would be expanding its financial aid program to offer free tuition, including room and board, for most families whose annual income is under $100,000 a year. Previously, the same benefit was offered to families making under $65,000 a year. This new income limit will take effect for all undergraduates starting in the fall of 2023.

Princeton was also the first school in the US to eliminate student loans from its financial aid packages.

7. Humpback whales no longer listed as endangered after major recovery

Humpback whales will be removed from Australia's threatened-species list, after the government's independent scientific panel on threatened species deemed the mammals had made a major recovery. Humpback whales will no longer be considered an endangered or vulnerable species.

Climate change and fishing still pose threats to their long-term health.

Scene opens on Casper High, Mighty Falcon's High, University School, then to the testing room. Lancer is now sitting at the desk at the front of the room, and Disguised Dark Danny, Disguised Dark Sophie, and Disguised Midnight Dan are still copying answers from the answer sheets to their tests. They looks up at the door and see Jazz, Arthur, and Jane frowning at them through the glass. They looks around quickly, and then a transparent copies of their adult selfs peels off and dives into the floor as they scowls back at them. Out in the hall, the copy slips up behind them and zaps them as they pull the Fenton Peelers. They scream and then collapse, unconscious, to the floor. They drag them offscreen by the ankles.

Scene change: back in the Ghost Zone...

Danny: Well, that's Vlad for ya. [We see that he is looking at a gigantic purple football.] Subtle as a flying mallet. [He pushes the football aside to reveal a swirling portal. He jumps through into a dim cave packed with equipment.]

Sophie: ? Wait... It’s football game? Going to see them, Jaleka

Dan: On the way, Diesel...

Old/Future Vlad: Come to kick a defenceless old man while he's down? [We see a beard and one arm, the fingers tapping the arm of a chair.]

The Bloodhounds

Okay so I've been procrastinating on making this introduction post for a while, but I wanted to make a post about Bloodhound; a gang I made for my Saints Row The Third paraquel story, Rose of Stilwater.

The gang is lead by three siblings: Anabelle (eldest, left), Gilbert (middle) and Arron (youngest, right); who hail from a small canadian town. With a base in a biker bar located between Barrio, Industries and Docks district.

The story starts well before they're formed with Arron, he was a member of the Third Street Saints in 2006 under Julius. He was really close with Playa (Lina), which put him near the main storyline of the game. Fast forward to SR1's ending, and when the Saints started falling apart after the Playa went into a coma, Arron ended up being one of the Saints that got arrested.

He was sentenced to 7 years in prison (lowest sentence for gang association, I assume with him being close to the main narrative and not as dangerous of a criminal as Gat or Playa, Troy would probably know him and argue for a shorter sentence), where he became rather popular with his inmates and formed close friendships with a lot of gang members.

Six years into his sentence, which would put it slightly after the events of SR2, he was eventually found by his siblings, who have been trying to track him down for years, and busted him out.

A lot of Arron's prison friends followed through with the escape, with over a dozen of them making it off the island in the process. The prisoners ended up being ex-Brotherhood members, the ones who managed to escape the Saints wrath by being imprisoned during the time. The ex-Brotherhood members reached out to their contacts in mainland Stilwater, eventually leading them to finding a refuge to lay low in a run down bar belonging to one of the former members.

With Brotherhood leadership being long gone, the escapees regrouped under the siblings, which essentially reformed the gang under a new management, and a new name, the Bloodhounds. Anabelle was the leader, dubbed as "The Alpha", while Gilbert, who made a name for himself in Stilwater's Underground Fight Club (known as Diesel), was her second in command. They were a lot more biker oriented now, but still rocked the red color of their predecessor (Maroon Red specifically). The gang was smaller than any other gang Stilwater ever had, with only couple of dozen people in it, which made them more family oriented this time.

With Saints being busy building their celebrity careers, Bloodhounds managed to quietly take criminal control over the Truckyard District, and the territories formerly controlled by the Brotherhood. They simply were trying to do crime just enough to support their big family and bar, looking to stay out of the Saints way not to build any tension between the two factions. Luckily for them, Saints were too busy being pop culture icons to ever bat an eye towards their direction, especially since the gentrification of Shivington and Projects.

They are involved in my Rose of Stilwater storyline, I mentioned their endgame in reboot sequel premise post.

The A. & G. Price Ltd Foundry in Thames. January, 2021. This is gonna be a long one, so consider yourself warned.

Directly behind the image is where the East Coast Main Trunk Line (ECMT) connected to the Foundry and allowed for A. & G. Price built locomotives to be attached to the end of an outgoing NZR train.

Many non-Price Locomotives have graced the (long removed) timetable, including the 'Taupō Mallet' (ALCo 53970/1912).

But who were A. & G. Price? Originally founded in Onehunga, Auckland, as a marine firm by Alfred and George Price, the brothers would take advantage of the Coromandel gold rush and begin selling industrial pumps to mining companies in the 1870s.

They would also close down the Onehunga premises and set up shop in Beach Rd, Thames. Price got their start in the railway industry with a small 0-4-0ST locomotive for Messrs. Smith of Kennedy's Bay. This loco is generally considered to be a resounding failure. The first successful locomotives would be the Ministry of Works (known colloquially as the Public Works Dept, PWD) 501-502 series. These were identical to the NZR Wf Class.

Price is well known for their Climax and Heisler clones, which employed features from both locomotives. Notable engines include the Cb Type (Cb 117 used on construction of Nihotupu Dam), V Type ('true' Heisler clone), E Type (Class B Climax clone, used Heisler style pony trucks) and the Cba (an improved Cb). They would build 16-wheeler bush lokeys*.

Price would also build dozens of locomotives for New Zealand Railways and would later begin producing diesel locomotives for bush and industrial railways. By the 1990s, Price was king! They had spent the 20th Century building locomotives and road vehicles for lucrative government contracts, and there was no end in sight. They had even regauged the Silver Star carriages to metre gauge for export to Singapore.

Except there was. By 2017, the company lost most of its work, as neither NZRC (New Zealand Railways Corporation), TranzRail, TollRail, or KiwiRail have ever gone back to Price. The company was subsequently placed into administration. The company was saved by an Auckand based businessman and was reformed as AG Price Ltd, ending the 149-year legacy of the greatest engineering firm in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Many A. & G. Price locomotives can still be found on heritage railways, and I know of one Price-CAT Inc. motor grader in a museum. The Foundry is a heritage listed building which means it can never be torn down.

It’s been apparent but I do love me a bit of duck and diesel interacting like civilised friends/work partners. This is also a first look at my beta humanised Diesel design! In my humanised and au take on the iconic duo these guys feed off the fact they use to have a long running rivalry in the past. Diesel reformed himself and duck apologised for -kinda maybe sorta being an asshole when they first met-.

They get a kick out of pretending to fight and insult each other, then go down to the local bar and chat for hours. Then maybe something else happens with their relationship idk right now I’m just testing the waters of their potential dynamic.

In some ways, it was the state monopoly’s autocratic Soviet legacy that led to its unexpected wartime success. The things Kamyshin had been asked to change became an advantage. Ukraine had too many rail lines, making it possible to ferry goods and people on varying lines and reroute the trains quickly in the event of an attack. Because Ukrzaliznytsia had only electrified part of its rails, diesel-powered trains could still run when electrical substations were attacked. (Electrified rails are considered faster, cheaper and more environmentally sustainable, but diesel locomotives are more reliable in war.) Reformers complained there were far too many workers, but that also meant there was a surplus of engineers familiar with making repairs in tight economic conditions. Employees, used to top-down command structures, reported for work.

"Calling hydrogen clean energy is a scam to prop up the oil and gas industry," said one campaigner.

More than 95% of hydrogen produced in the United States is made using fossil fuels, but that hasn't stopped its backers—including industry groups such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce—from touting the energy source as critical to the fight against climate change.

A diverse coalition of advocacy organizations on Tuesday implored the Biden administration to stop buying into the hype.

In a letter to officials at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), more than 180 groups called on the administration to abandon plans to invest in hydrogen projects, warning that "a large-scale buildout of hydrogen infrastructure will further exacerbate the climate crisis and disproportionately harm people of color, low-income communities, and Indigenous peoples."

Two recently enacted pieces of legislation—the Inflation Reduction Act and a bipartisan infrastructure measure championed by oil industry ally Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.)—include benefits for the hydrogen industry.

The latter bill authorized the Department of Energy to spend roughly $8 billion on developing Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs), drawing outrage from community organizers in Colorado, New Mexico, and other states behind the Western Interstate Hydrogen Hub, a project aimed at expanding U.S. hydrogen production.

"We recognize that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act directs DOE to fund these hubs, but we ask DOE to find a different path and reject this false solution. It's time for DOE to do the right thing," the groups wrote in their letter on Tuesday.

The groups behind the letter—including the Center for Biological Diversity and Food & Water Watch—note that hydrogen production generates significant planet-warming emissions.

"Hydrogen lifecycle emissions which use carbon capture and storage are 20% greater than directly burning natural gas or coal, and 60% greater than burning diesel oil, because of the increased fossil fuels required to power it," the letter states. "The process of producing gray and blue hydrogen is a major source of fugitive methane emissions from flaring, transportation, and other upstream processes—releasing even more potent greenhouse gases and exacerbating atmospheric warming over the next two decades."

"President Biden can't claim to be a climate leader while his administration continues to embrace the hydrogen climate scam and other policies that continue to perpetuate fossil fuel production and infrastructure."

As Nature explained in an editorial warning against "overhyping" hydrogen, "Most hydrogen is currently made by processes—such as steam reformation of natural gas (methane)—that produce large amounts of CO2 as a by-product."

"Although 'green' hydrogen can be made by using electricity from renewable sources to split water molecules," the outlet added, "this process is costly compared with more conventional production methods."

Silas Grant, a campaigner with the Center for Biological Diversity, said Tuesday that "calling hydrogen clean energy is a scam to prop up the oil and gas industry."

"The Biden administration's plans to expand this dirty energy will only increase oil and gas extraction at a time when the climate emergency demands the opposite," said Grant. "We need investment in affordable, reliable, community-supported renewable energy like wind and solar."

The coalition's letter comes two months after New Mexico-based advocacy organizations urged the Biden administration to reject funding for the Western Interstate Hydrogen Hub, arguing the initiative would "devastate public health, clean air, Indigenous sacred places, and the climate."

"The climate crisis poses a grave threat to all life on Earth," the groups wrote in a letter to the U.S. Energy Department. "DOE has the power to help lead a transformation to a more sustainable future. To do so, you must help phase out fossil fuels and reject false solutions like hydrogen."

But the Biden White House has yet to waver in its support for hydrogen, claiming in a brief last month that "clean hydrogen has the potential to play an important role in decarbonizing the U.S. economy."

Jim Walsh, policy director at Food & Water Watch, countered Tuesday that investments in hydrogen are "a distraction from real climate action that will cause more pollution, more strain on water resources, and more extraction of climate warming fossil fuels."

"President Biden can't claim to be a climate leader while his administration continues to embrace the hydrogen climate scam and other policies that continue to perpetuate fossil fuel production and infrastructure," Walsh added.

General Information Yemen is a country in the Middle East, at the Southwestern corner of the Arabian peninsula. In Ancient times, the region was controlled by several city-states and empires that came to wealth through trade. During medieval times, it was ruled by several Islamic dynasties. The political environment of Yemen has been unstable, with Civil War ongoing since 2014. Vast majority of the 32.7 Million inhabitants are Arabs, around 3.7 % are Somalis. Nearly all inhabitants are Muslim, around two thirds Sunni, around one third Shia.

Since unification, the economy has been forced to sustain the consequences of Yemen's support for Iraq during the 1990–91 Persian Gulf War: Saudi Arabia expelled almost 1 million Yemeni workers, and both Saudi Arabia and Kuwait significantly reduced economic aid to Yemen. The 1994 civil war further drained Yemen's economy. As a consequence, Yemen has relied heavily on aid from multilateral agencies to sustain its economy for the past 24 years. In return, it has pledged to implement significant economic reforms. In 1997 the International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved two programs to increase Yemen's credit significantly: the enhanced structural adjustment facility (now known as the poverty reduction and growth facility, or PRGF) and the extended funding facility (EFF). In the ensuing years, Yemen's government attempted to implement recommended reforms: reducing the civil service payroll, eliminating diesel and other subsidies, lowering defense spending, introducing a general sales tax, and privatizing state-run industries. However, limited progress led the IMF to suspend funding between 1999 and 2001.

Our two parties have both changed, and that explains why one will win, and one lose in the midterm elections.

The old Democrats have faded away after being overwhelmed by radicals and socialists.

Moderates who once embraced Bill Clinton’s opportunistic “third way” are now either irrelevant or nonexistent.

Once considered too wacky and socialist to be taken seriously, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), the performance-art “squad,” the radicals of the Congressional Black Caucus, and Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and her hard progressive wing are today’s Democratic Party kingpins.

The alienating radicals of Antifa and Black Lives Matter often serve as the new party’s shock troops on the streets. They opportunistically appear to push the party to embrace no-bail laws, defunding the police, and the destruction of the fossil fuel industry.

Since none of those positions poll even close to 50 percent with the public, the Democrats routinely either slur their opponents as racists, nativists, and climate denialists or obsess on another Trump psychodrama distraction from the Russia collusion hoax to the Mar-a-Lago raid.

What “blue dog” centrists are left in the Democratic Party either keep mum or, like Tulsi Gabbard, flee in disgust.

Donald Trump also recalibrated the Republican Party and helped to turn it into a nationalist-populist movement that would rather win rudely than lose politely. The MAGA agenda pushed Jacksonian deterrence rather than unpopular nation-building abroad. It finally focused on fair rather than just free trade.  Republicans now unite in demanding only legal immigration and promoting domestic investment rather than globalist outsourcing and offshoring.

In response, many of the old Bush-Romney country-club wing left in disgust. Others licked their wounds as fanatical NeverTrump something or others.

Both parties have also been radically changed by additional issues of class, race, and wealth.

Compare the income profiles of voters, whether by ZIP codes or congressional districts. A once lunch-bucket carrying, union member Democratic Party has become the enclave of three key constituencies.

First, there is the subsidized and often inner-city poor.

Second, the meat of the party, is the upscale, bicoastal professional and suburban credentialed classes.

Third, the real rulers of the party are the hyper-rich of Big Tech, Wall Street, Hollywood, the corporate boardroom, the administrative state, the media, and the legal world. Almost all these institutions have lost public confidence and poll miserably. Their cocooned leaders are never subject to the ramifications of their own often unworkable policies.

In contrast, Republicans this election cycle concerned themselves mostly with material issues of the battered middle classes—inflation, the price of fuel and energy, a secure border, crime, parental control of schools, and realist foreign policy.

Reforming social security, reducing capital gains taxes, and pruning back regulations are still doctrinaire Republican agendas. But they are not iconic of the middle-class dominated party as they once were in the age of Ronald Reagan.

Democrats, as the champions of the well-off, remain redistributionist and seek to tax the middle class to fund ever more government programs.

Joe Biden canceled some student loans. He printed lots of money. And he expanded entitlements. But even these calcified Great Society issues are drowned out by the real concerns of the professional leftist elites who run the Democratic Party.

After all, they do not worry much about the price of diesel fuel, or whether border communities are swarmed by illegal immigration. They are indifferent to whether it is unsafe to take a late-night subway ride. And they are not too worried about being mugged or whether they can splurge for a weekend steak.

Instead, condescending Democratic movers and shakers are obsessed with climate change and sermonize about ending fossil fuels. Diversity, equity, and inclusion—all mandated equality-of-result agendas—are their cultural religion, along with transgender advocacy, and abortion on demand in all 50 states.

The net result of these radical shifts is that Republicans began bonding with the neglected working classes and those without college degrees. That way they drowned out left-wing racial obsessions with ecumenical class concerns.

In the process, the new Republican Party in 2022 is poised to win 45-50 percent of Hispanic voters and a near record number of African-American men.

In our changed political landscape, poorer Republican candidates are routinely outspent in most of their races. Conservatives are more likely to be canceled by left-wing anti-free-expression institutions like Facebook and Twitter. Their access to online knowledge and communication is often warped by monopolies and cartels like Google and Apple.

The Democrats claim Republicans are racists. But they cannot explain why record numbers of minorities are now deserting the Democrats, and the blue-state urban areas they run, to join the new Republicans.

As Republicans diminished the role of race, the Democrats grew ever more obsessed about it—and ignored class. The Oprahs, Meghan Markles, and MSNBC anchors of the world fixate over skin color in direct proportion to their own affluence, status, and privilege—as their hypocrisy turns off the middle classes of all races.

In sum, the party of old left-wing progressives has become one of rich regressives. And once country-club Republicans are becoming a party of middle-class populists. And the election will reflect both those changes.
