Song Review: The Black Crowes - “Wanting and Waiting”

The fact it isn’t surprising doesn’t make the Black Crowes’ transition to generic rock ‘n’ roll any less dispiriting.

“Wanting and Waiting” finds Chris and Rich Robinson announcing the March 15 arrival of Happiness Bastards with too many cymbals; corny handclaps; uninspired, arena-ready guitar; and chants about blood on fire following such insipid lyrics as:

I know we don’t stand a chance/but gimme gimme this last dance

It’s as if the Crowes, 35 years after their debut LP, have moved from Mick Taylor-era Rolling Stones to post-Rock in a Hard Place Aerosmith for their prime inspiration. As such, “Wanting and Waiting,” lame as it is, may be the Crowes’ biggest hit to date.
