Noorderlicht International Photo Festival 2021: The Makeable Mind

The Noorderlicht International Photo Festival 2021 takes place from 7th August onwards at several locations in Groningen and Friesland. With the theme ‘The Makeable Mind’ Noorderlicht explores the relationship between visual culture and reality: how is our thinking guided by a rampant image culture, unprecedented technological possibilities and lightning-fast internet connections? THE MAKEABLE MIND Curator: Paulien Dresscher I Junior curator: George Knegtel Departing from photography, the 28th edition focuses on the entire spectrum of the image, both analogue and digital: from traditional photography to digital and interactive images, internet glitches, machine learning, virtual reality, street guerrilla actions, performances, sound installations and deep fakes. From the open call, but also by invitation, festival curator Paulien Dresscher – in collaboration with junior curator George Knegtel and Noorderlicht curator Wim Melis – came to a selection of some seventy participating artists from the Netherlands and abroad, who will be presented at no fewer than 15 locations in Groningen and Friesland. Paulien Dresscher: “There are more flavours than fake or not fake, with a wealth of images and stories hidden between them. Sometimes dystopian, sometimes utopian or simply fantastic. But nevertheless, exciting and fascinating. With algorithms as our personal advisors, we all think we recognise objective reality within our own bubble, but if there is one thing we can know about that truth, it is that it is not singular.”

Just because Fashion RHP won't be shooting for a while doesn't mean Fashion RHP decided to change things up a little bit, logo wise! Sure, the @fashionrhp logo looks a lot like the same logo, but the color blue is the new primary color for Fashion RHP's primary logo to honor Autism Awareness.

As most of you are aware of, I have Autism. And for over a decade, I've used photography (fashion photography in this case), to express my Autism diagnosis. So this further explains part of the reason for Fashion RHP revamping its logo, and doing so yesterday in honor of Autism Awareness Day! Yours Truly is looking forward to the day I can finally get back at it and photographing more models at photo shoots and fashion shows once we've all been self-quarantined! L’histoire proposée par “Mortal Engines” nous invite à suivre Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar), une fugitive défigurée en quête de vengeance contre Thaddeus Valentine (Hugo Weaving), le chef de la guilde des historiens. Jadis, ce dernier a tué sa mère dans le but de voler un dispositif ancien permettant de canaliser une énergie surpuissante. À la suite d’un conflit cataclysmique, les vestiges de l’humanité sont divisés en deux catégories. Une partie de la population est regroupée dans des villes mobiles évoluant dans ce qui fut autrefois l’Angleterre et l’Europe continentale, chassant et absorbant des agglomérations plus petites afin de piller leurs ressources.

L’autre partie de la population mondiale est regroupée sous l’appellation de Ligue anti-traction et offre un mode de vie alternatif de colonies statiques, concentrées en Asie et protégées par un mur bouclier. Thaddeus Valentine ambitionne de détruire ce mur et ainsi d’aller piller les ressources de ce qui fut auparavant la Chine. Hester Shaw va tenter de l’en empêcher, aider par Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan), un apprenti historien, chassé de la ville par Thaddeus Valentine. Les choses vont néanmoins se compliquer sérieusement avec l’intervention de Shrike (Stephen Lang), le dernier survivant d’un bataillon de soldats mort-vivants en partie construit avec des pièces de robot, qui fut autrefois le protecteur d’Hester….

Le gros point faible de ce “Mortal Engines” c’est indéniablement son scénario. Et pourtant, ils se sont mis à trois pour écrire le script de ce métrage. Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens qui avait déjà travaillé sur les franchises The Lord of the Rings ainsi que sur la série de films The Hobbit, et Peter Jackson lui-même, réalisateur et co-scénariste des deux franchises précédemment citées. Le premier gros trou dans le scénario, c’est l’explication qui permettrait de comprendre comment les villes sont devenues mobiles.

Ensuite, bien que l’histoire puisse apparaître comme originale, on se rend compte qu’on se trouve face à une sorte de mélange de fiction déjà vue par le passé. La plus flagrante, c’est certainement la ressemblaznce entre l’humanoïde Shrike et le Terminator auquel on aurait ajouté la tête de Skeletor (Masters of the Universe – 1987) pour les plus anciens, ou celle de Red Skull (Captain America: The First Avenger – 2011) pour les plus jeunes. En vrac, on peut également citer des métrages comme Star Wars, “Mad Max” (1979) ou encore “The City of Lost Children” (1995).

L’ensemble du développement est lourd, l’intrigue est vraiment trop usuelle pour que l’on soit pleinement captivé et/ou qu’on éprouve une forte empathie pour les personnages. Il y a cependant un travail considérable au niveau des décors, des costumes, mais les effets spéciaux ne sont pas complètement réussis, ce qui aujourd’hui fait perdre des points précieux à ce type de film. A contrario, on peut relever la critique sociale qui est bien présente et bien visible. Le tout accompagné d’une présentation intelligente au niveau des références politiques et historiques sur la construction de ce nouveau monde.

Du côté de la distribution, on peut largement se satisfaire des performances proposées. Personnellement, je découvrais Hera Hilmar à laquelle j’ai trouvé des ressemblances, dans certaines scènes, selon l’éclairage et les angles de caméra, à Kristen Steward. Je n’ai pas tellement accroché sur la prestation de Robert Sheehan, que j’ai trouvé trop caricaturale. Le personnage qu’incarne le jeune acteur s’inscrit dans un schéma qu’on a déjà vu, ce qui apporte une sensation de familiarité qui nuit au métrage. Il en est de même pour la performance de Hugo Weaving qui s’avère également beaucoup trop caricatural dans l’antagonisme. Seul Stephen Lang, bien que méconnaissable, donne un côté profondément humain à un être qui ne l’est plus du tout…

“Mortal Engines” a rapporté 16 millions de dollars aux États-Unis et au Canada et 86,6 millions de dollars dans les autres pays, pour une recette mondiale de 102,6 millions de dollars, contre un budget de production d’au moins 100 millions de dollars. Le métrage est à ce stade considéré comme une box-office bomb. Philip Reeve, l’auteur des romans de Mortal Engines, s’est réjoui du film, déclarant : “Christian Rivers a fait un travail fantastique. Il s’agit d’un énorme film d’action, visuellement génial, avec un rythme parfait… De nombreux changements ont été apportés aux personnages, à l’univers contextuel et à l’histoire, mais c’est toujours fondamentalement la même chose.”.

En conclusion, “Mortal Engines” est un film d’action acceptable disposant d’une histoire convenable, d’une intrigue classique et d’un développement usuel. Le rythme est bon, le récit est fluide et la narration est linéaire. La photographie est originale, mais les effets spéciaux manquent de réalisme par moment. La bande originale est très plaisante. L’ensemble plonge cependant le spectateur averti dans un sentiment de déjà vu, ce qui fait considérablement perdre de l’enthousiasme au film, qui reste cependant divertissant. On attend forcément, mieux de Peter Jackson et de ses équipes…
