Mahina glanced over at the sound of her name coming from an angry voice. It was Lanikai and she didn't look happy. She looked side to side in confusion

Mahina: Lani? What's going on?

The disdain in Lanikai's eyes kept her from saying any other words. She looked at Mahina like she was a piece of crap in the toilet or a bug needing to be smooshed on.

Lanikai: Don't act all innocent. I found out about you."

Mahina: About me?

Mahina was absolutely clueless right now.

Mahina: So that's basically what happened.

Mahina left out the more mature details of that night but she knew Makani didn't need an explanation of that. She could see him calculating everything that was said and then he finally just shrugged and gave her a lopsided smile.

Makani: You quite literally could blame it on the alcohol?

Mahina: Not to be cliche but...yes. I went home, woke up with a killer headache, and never thought about him again. At least until Lani brought him up.

Words weren't sugar-coated by Makani who yet again shrugged.

Makani: Yeah, those two are still pretty fresh in their break up. They were together for a long time and they have Lilikoi.

Mahina: So I messed up?

The confusion and embarrassment that Mahina felt was soon replaced by a calm anger. She stared Lanikai head on and tapped a finger on her palm.

Mahina: First of all, I'm not a homewrecker, love. Never have been, never will be. I had no idea who the man was in the first place let alone your ex-boyfriend or husband. Kind of hard to do that when you first move to an island, don't you think?

Too angry to take in all of her words, Lanikai kept exploding her own.

Lanikai: Yeah, right. How could have just happened huh? I asked all over the village who it was you were with and they all said it was him. That's disgusting, Mahina and if you think Makani is going to want to have anything to do with you after this, you're delusional!

Mahina was stunned to silence at the hurtful way Lanikai was being to her, but she refused to go down to her level.

Mahina: Wow. When you want to hurt someone, you really go below the belt, Lani. Maybe you should talk to your ex about this more than me because he came on to me first. As for Makani, it remains to be seen if we will even be together. Anyway, maybe should find another babysitter for Lili. I'm done being slandered.

With that, Mahina walked away to her home, leaving an even more confused Lanikai wondering if she had done the right thing.

Months Ago...

It was maybe not even a week or two that Mahina moved into her house that she got an invite to hang out at The Neon Palm with Iwa. It was good because she had gotten her tribal tats a while ago and felt good enough to go. Mahina felt honored to be able to hang with somebody from Sapatuli and it didn’t take long to get fully into the experience. The drinks flowed and the dancing didn’t stop for a minute.

Makani wasn't too sure what was going on. All he knew was that whatever it was was messing with Mahina something fierce. She fidgeted in front of him with her hands as he sat down.

Mahina: I'm not sure how to start.

Makani: Just go at your own pace. You got this.

She nodded, feeling comfortable finally.

Mahina: Lanikai is mad at me because she found out that I had sex with her ex-boyfriend.

She felt better at least getting out or at least she did until Makani frowned up at her.

Makani: Her ex boyfriend...Nikolao? My best friend?

Mahina paused in her next word, her eyes bugging out as she realized what was said. What were the odds she would piss off somebody else.

Mahina: I...I didn't know he was your best friend, Kani. I barely knew anybody around that time. Oh my God...I feel so horrible. I swear I had no idea.

Makani held up his hand pausing her conversation before trying to calm her down.

Makani: Okay, Hina. It's going to be okay. Take a deep breath and let's just start at the beginning, all right?

Mahina exhaled before closing her eyes and taking in the sounds that Sapatuli had to offer her. The water, the rustling of the palm trees and the various birds. As she did a calm came over her and she took in one more breath before open her eyes seeing Makani staring at her quietly.

Makani: Ready to share?

Mahina: I'm ready. It all started when I first moved to the island.

Mahina couldn't help but give a sigh of relief seeing Makani walking up to her door. She gave him to okay to walk in and stood before being engulfed in sun-warmed arms. She blinked before hugging Makani back hearing his voice deep in her ears.

Makani: How's it, Kui'ipo? What's going on? You sounded sad.

Mahina smiled hearing him call her sweetheart as he had every time he saw her and then she sighed again putting her head against his.

Mahina: I think I fucked up, Kani.

Makani: Let's talk then.

Mahina comes down to see what the problem is and what she's being blamed for only to be stopped short with a finger in her face.

Lanikai: I figured out it was you who fucked my ex.

Her heart nearly skips a beat as this information is said to her and for a moment Mahina is speechless. How could the world be so small for her to have had a one-night stand like quickie with Lanikai's ex?

Lanikai: How could you? I had been wanting to work things out with him. This complicates things completely, Mahina!

Mahina: I...I...

Lanikai: Well? Say something, you homewrecker!

For some reason that day, Mahina got a call from Lanikai saying that Lilikoi's grandmother was going to watch her for the rest of the day. Having free time, she was able to go to the bar where most of the locals hung out. After some chats and some non-alcoholic drinks, Mahina decided to call it a day.

Lanikai: Mahina!

After partaking in Mahina’s dish and knowing that Lanikai still had about thirty minutes before having to leave for work, Mahina started to tell her story. 

Mahina: About a month or so ago, I went to the club with Iwa. We had a great time and the music was bumpin! But then this one guy with like shaved hair and a ponytail came in the club. He saw me and we hit it off. We hit it off so good that we ended up having sex in a pretty much deserted part of the club. It was literally out of nowhere but hey, I had no regrets.

Lanikai: Oh my goodness, Mahina. That’s so scandal..wait, you said a guy with a ponytail? 

Mahina: Yeah, that was the only thing I remember about him. It was a while back, like I said.

Lanikai nodded, her eyes subdued as if she were thinking about something. Mahina cocked her head in question. 

Mahina: You okay?

Lanikai: Uh...yeah, I think. I’m going to go ahead and head to work. Don’t want to get here late okay?

Mahina blinked; the once happy atmosphere between the two had changed in a heartbeat and looking at the clock, she could see that Lani had a lot more time.

Mahina: Oh, okay. I’ll make sure Koi has her nap and a snack before you get home.

Lanikai: Thanks Mahina. See you later.
