RNM Reflection Blog Post
Tumblr media
The TV show Roswell, New Mexico was something I never thought I would watch in a classroom. It consisted of aliens, lots of drama, romances, betrayals, plot twists, and many more aspects of a soap opera adjacent TV show.
I enjoyed most aspects of the show, but it honestly took me a while to truly get invested. I rarely start new TV shows, especially ones that are multiple seasons long with so many plot points it’s easy to get confused. However, since this show was part of our class and most of the assignments we did, I stayed with the show. After the first couple of episodes I started to become extremely invested in the characters and their relationships. I wanted to see how they were going to progress in the show, how they would use their powers, how a human-alien relationship could work, and many other things. It began to be hard for me not to go ahead and binge the entire thing instead of actually staying on schedule with the rest of the class.
I became extremely attached to Michael Guerin and his entire storyline. The showrunners did an amazing job with his character in my opinion. The dynamic between Isobel, Max, and Michael warmed my heart and made me invested in each of their individual characters. I grew to love characters that annoyed me at first including the characters I found boring at first like Max, Liz, and Kyle (Kyle now being one of my favorite characters).

I must say season three was surely my favorite season. The individual storylines that intertwined with the Jones plot and all the romance subplots were so beautifully written it kept me hooked the entire time. When this season ended, it honestly made me sad to think that I wouldn’t be able to watch it again for the first time, truly a bitter-sweet feeling.  Watching the show was surely entertaining but it did take me a while to try and connect it without class. I realize the class is called “Aliens and Identity”, but I did not see how much a show like this could connect to an English class. Yet as I got attached to the individual characters, analyzed them, and saw how they found their own identity and meaning in life, I saw how effective well written characters are to the media. Watching other people accept themselves and grow as people, encourages you to do the same. I ended up really loving Roswell, New Mexico and am grateful to have experienced this show the way I did.

Fan Work Analysis Blog Post
Fan fiction and videos allow for a new perspective and approach to analyze shows/ movies and their characters along with the plotlines that surround them. I have watched and read many fav videos and fiction for the TV show Roswell New Mexico. One that stood out to me was the “Hey Brother'' fan video, created by Bisexual Alien Nerds, which analyzed the relationship between Michael, Max, and Isobel. This trio relationship has always interested me the most while watching the show and I enjoyed watching this fan video to see how others perceive their sibling-like bond.
Tumblr media
This fan work is giving another look into how deep and strong the trio’s bond truly is. It portrays multiple clips from their relationship and how they interact with each other. A main idea throughout their character relationships that this fan video exemplifies is how Max, Michael, and Isobel will always protect one another.
Tumblr media
The creator of the fav video clearly chose scenes from the show that exemplify this protective sibling dynamic the pod squad has with each other. Using different scenes from the show that display Isobel and Michael running to Max’s side, Michael in distress over Max’s heart failing, Michael and Max rushing to help Isobel, the trio in the desert when they were kids, and many more scenes that show how they grew up together and stayed loyal to each other throughout their entire lives.
Tumblr media
One very important scene the video used towards the end was when the trio stood as they watched the car burn that had Rosa and the other two girls in it. This storyline was integral to the siblings’ dynamic and exhibits how they trust each other implicitly. The video finally ended with scenes from the trio walking alone when they were first found and the last clip showed the pods that they were in stasis in for so long. These visuals portray how they have been with each other for so long and how they have had this relationship since the day they were found.
Tumblr media
Another essential part of any fan video is the background music. This video was edited to the song “Hey Brother” by Avicci and there was no added dialogue from the show. The lyrics from the song include “hey brother” and “hey sister” and the video uses these lyrics to show introductory clips of each sibling at either “brother” or “sister”. This already shows how the music choice is going to represent the sibling relationship the trio shares.
Tumblr media
Another lyric that is in the chorus and repeated frequently in this fan video is “for you, there’s nothing in this world I wouldn’t do”. This line is very important to the overall message of the song and resembles the protectiveness each member of the pod squad has over each other. In the video, when this lyric pops up, the scene shown is where one or two members of the trio are protecting or comforting the others.
Tumblr media
This fan video does a great job at representing the relationship between Max, Isobel, and Michael and how it has developed since their first time together leaving the pods. Through the music choice and scenes used, the watchers are easily able to see that the creator appreciates this relationship and see how the trio’s bond is portrayed throughout the show.

Guptill- Getting the Mechanics Right
Another common assumption among students is that one is either good at grammar or not good at grammar, and that such is one’s immutable fate. Not true. Once you master a particular rule or practice, it becomes second nature, and then you can focus your attention on mastering another.

I'm glad the plot point of the alighting is being brought back since it hasn't really been mentioned since Noah's talked about it in the end of season 1.
