2021 Volkswagen ID4 Electric SUV Prototype First Drive: On the Right Track
What a difference 15 years makes. When this author’s Audi S4 rolled off of the production line in February of 2005, efficiency, CO2 emissions, and miles per gallon were all secondary—or even tertiary—concerns to the big, naturally aspirated V-8 planted under its hood. In 2020, as we set off to drive a prototype version of the 2021 Volkswagen ID4, the opposite could not be more true, and that little black S4 seems all the more a relic. The electric future we’re waiting for isn’t the future at all—it’s right here, right now.
There isn’t much doubt that Dieselgate put VW into a bit of a bind. It forced the company to clean up its act, to commit to a more honest future, and to build the very electric vehicle we drove for this review. An SUV version of the not-for-America ID3 hatchback, the fully electric Volkswagen ID4 is perhaps the most important car VW has ever launched in the United States.
How the ID4 Stacks Up
Before we detail our experiences with a preproduction ID4, though, let’s take a quick glance at the competition—after all, electric SUVs are sprouting like weeds these days. At $39,995 before applicable federal and state tax incentives, the ID4 undercuts both the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach E and offers more range than the base version of the Ford (250 miles to 230). A base Model Y is almost $10,000 more expensive, and even though it offers more range, some buyers might not be able to bridge that price gap.
Once you move your eyes from the spec sheet and price tag, you’ll want to take a look at the car in the metal. The ID4 doesn’t look like a large SUV from the outside, and it isn’t, being smaller than the current U.S.-spec Tiguan in every dimension. But it but once you open the doors and peer at the rear legroom, or slot yourself into the comfy faux-leather-covered driver’s seat and gaze over the expansive, clutter-free dashboard, the ID4 immediately feels a size bigger than its dimensions would imply. The seats are supportive and the driving position is ideal for a compact crossover—high without being lofty and making you feel as if you’re sitting on the thing rather than in it.
As for starting the ID4, you don’t. There is a start-stop button on the right side of the steering column, but the idea is you’ll almost never have to use it. Once the car senses you in the driver’s seat and the key fob somewhere inside the car, it clicks itself on and is ready to go. Reach for the funky gear selector switch to the right of the digital driver’s display and give it a little upward twist to select “D” for drive and off you go.
Although the example we drove was a prototype model, Volkswagen insisted that it was representative of what customers will be getting. We believe it; from the moment we put our foot on the accelerator, the ID4 felt finished. As is the case with virtually all electric motors, response from the 201-hp, permanent-magnet synchronous unit mounted on the rear axle was instant, and the pedal response was perfectly linear. The more “throttle” you add, the more acceleration you get. Easy.
Pop it into Sport mode, and things get livelier. The accelerator pedal becomes more sensitive, and the steering weights up to signal intent without going wooden or overly heavy. This is how you’ll want to drive the ID4, as it banishes any whiffs of the overly light steering in many current conventionally powered VWs. Even though there’s nothing in the way of noticeable feedback, the steering is is wonderfully accurate and linear, so placing the ID4 in a corner or in a parking lot is a snap.
Among primary controls, the braking felt like the car’s weakest point, at least when used hard. As with nearly every other EV, most of the braking in almost all driving is handled via the regenerative system, the better to deliver otherwise wasted energy back into the system. Especially under aggressive braking, the pedal feels soft all the way through its travel before you finally activate the ABS of the friction brakes, making modulation difficult. While nearly all ID4 drivers won’t ever use the brakes this aggressively, an overall lack of feel will take nearly all of them some time to get used to. Indeed, we were often stabbing at the brakes too hard, inducing a lurching stop. While the ID4’s particular brake responses may end up being learned, there may be some refinement there yet to be had (especially in terms of pedal firmness) before the SUV hits dealerships.
VW ID4: A Lifted, Electric GTI?
Prior to our drive, VW’s PR arm was consistently pitching the ID4 as driving like a lifted GTI. Yeah right, we thought. How could the company have captured even a modicum of the GTI’s magic in an EV SUV? But they were something close to right, and all things considered, the ID4 is by quite some margin the best-driving Volkswagen SUV you can buy right now. But that’s not the only thing it does better than its gas-powered stablemates. In contrast to, say, the Volkswagen Atlas we tested earlier this year, the ID4’s buttoned-down and supple ride is a revelation. The big three-row Atlas SUV simply never settles down, but small surface imperfections in don’t upset the ID4 at all, and even large undulations revealed excellent body control. Larger impacts would occasionally deliver a big thump through the seat bottom, but we attribute some of that to this car’s 20-inch wheels and shorter tire sidewalls. VW ID4 First Edition models and those with the $4,500 optional Statement package will get 20s, but standard ID4s sit on 19s.
We didn’t get to try a version on the 19-inch wheels, but we’re assuming that the ride would be marginally better with more sidewall and less unsprung weight. Volkswagen also says that specifying the bigger rollers sacrifices something like 5 miles of range. But beyond the impact noise, there was hardly anything to hear inside the ID4 save for the purr of the electric motors and the nearly inaudible whoosh of the air conditioning at full blast. In that way, this EV has a refined feel.
Cleanly Designed—and Sometimes Frustrating—Insides
The charming, minimalist look of the interior can be described as refined, but the cabin designers’ decided to use capacitive touch controls for almost everything, resulting in tricky-to-learn and occasionally imprecise ergonomics. None of the touch-sensitive buttons provide haptic feedback (save for those on the steering-wheel), so being precise with your taps is difficult. Trying to activate the climate controls or use the drive-mode selector was arduous, and the buttons simply didn’t register our touches with accuracy or the proper sensitivity.
Yes, Tesla buries nearly everything in a digital interface, but it’s not the easiest way to use a car. Trendy though it may be, some automakers who switched to capacitive controls are at the moment unwinding that decision. The ID4 might seem “less futuristic” with more physical buttons, but top-level functions should be easy to use, period, and physical controls are a less anodyne way to experience the interior of a car—touch buttons add nothing to the experience. The ID4’s cabin is a nice place to be, but imperfect. Check out our hands-on interior review for more.
As for the range, we were driving the car hard enough during our brief drive that in-depth commentary—beyond to say we at one point used 44 miles of indicated range to traverse 38 miles—wouldn’t be in order. We drove the car harder than the average consumer might to get a feel for the ride and handling, and that’s never the path to range enlightenment. For those predisposed to range anxiety, though, there is a “B” driving mode on the gear selector, which increases the brake-energy recuperation in a bid to help maintain—or even gain—some range in, say, stop-and-go traffic or while descending a mountain road without negatively affecting the driving experience. In may ways, “B” stands for “Best Way to Drive It.”
Because aside from being good to drive, at least in this early form, the ID4 is an attention-getter. Maybe it’s because no one’s seen one on the road yet, or maybe it’s because it represents a fresh aesthetic for VW, but we received thumbs-up from multiple pedestrians, and a man in a 911 Turbo S dropped his shades to get a better look at the shiny new EV next to him at a red light. It seems that the ID4 is pretty good at first impressions.

The Bug That’s Actually A Buick!
Robert Freeman’s 1959 Beetle takes “buggin-out” to new heights.
No, you didn’t pick up Hot VWs Magazine by mistake. This is HOT ROD, so relax. Behold Robert Freeman’s “Berlin Buick,” christened as such because there’s a whole lot of Buick wrapped in that Volkswagen shell. Robert has wanted a mid-engine Volkswagen since he was a kid, and this is the manifestation of that childhood dream. The key to this fantasy fulfillment was to find the right people to help with the hard stuff, and that happened when he took the old Beetle body with a sunroof grafted sometime in its ugly past to Gary Brown at Browns Metal Mods in Port Leyden, north of Syracuse, New York. Robert arrived seeking only a top chop for the body he’d owned for 15 years, to kick off what would be a two-year build. When Robert confessed he was after a mid-engine bug with American V8 power, Gary suggested the 215ci Buick would be perfect because it’s light, narrow, and there’s still a ton of speed parts for the little aluminum terror. He also offered up his shop’s services, and the rest is Deutschamerikaner synchronicity.
The diminutive 215 Buick has been a go-to engine for tight engine conversions since the 1960s. Introduced in 1961, it’s light weight and 4.24-inch bore spacing combined with 3 ½-inch bores, making for compactness that’s just part of the reason it’s a popular engine swap. Only in production by Buick for three years, the rights to the design and tooling were sold to Rover in England, which kept it in production until the mid-1980s, finding its way into MGs and Land Rovers among other British marques. In 1961 it was the lightest weight, mass-produced engine made, at 315 pounds.
Robert’s engine has seen some massaging performed by Jack Dineen, including custom flat-top pistons increasing the compression to 12.5 to 1, a polished stock crank, and adapting a 1999 Buick oil pump with bored galleys and chamfered oil holes. The heads are later Rover 4.0 heads with stainless valves. A Schneider flat-tappet cam was used with .484-inch lift, .305 duration at 0.050, and 106 lobe separation angle. In addition, Chevy small-block valve springs were used. Up front a double-roller chain keeps things in sync.
Crowning the Buick is the Hilborn stack fuel injection using a Holley stand-alone EFI system with custom BMM fuel rails, a FAST regulator set to 47 pounds, and ACCEL injectors. An MSD Pro Billet distributor and MSD coils control the spark. Exhaust is dramatically handled with Brown-built zoomies. Cooling things off are twin Davies Craig water pumps, and custom twin SPAL radiators.
Of course all of this power has to be harnessed, but not with a weak VW transaxle. A new Medeola 4-speed was adapted to the Buick with a Kennedy Engineering bellhousing, enclosing a Stage 2 Kennedy billet steel flywheel. The Driveshaft Shop created the 8-inch 930 CV drive axles, spinning ET Classic V aluminum 15×12-inch wheels, and 15×4-inch ETs up front, mounted with 345/50R15 Nitto Drag Radials and Firestone 145SR15 tires respectively.
The ball-joint front suspension beam was narrowed 6 inches, with dropped spindles and modified shock towers all combining to get the beetle low and riding smooth. Ride Tech Shockwave shocks are at the corners. Brown’s attached all of this to the stock VW pan that has been reinforced with tube rails front to back. Brakes are 8-inch JBugs up front, and Wilwood 8-inch rears, actuated manually, with stainless lines and fittings throughout.
All of this gave the Berlin Bug a stout foundation for the body mods Robert had fantasized about, which were all executed by the Brown brothers Gary, Luke, and Dylan. Things got going with a 4 ½-inch top chop, then roll pans were fabricated for both the front and back, along with rolled fenders, which were left stock width. Both the (former) engine lid and trunk lid were smoothed and also peaked. The running boards were eliminated, and the doors were converted to rear hinges with electric poppers. All of the door corners were rounded, an ode to 1950s customizing where no straight lines or corners were allowed. The stock bumpers were split, narrowed, and tucked tight to the body. 1957 Buick side trim sweep was frenched into the body sides, and 1953 Buick “Venti-port” portholes were added that now function as exhaust ports. Emblempros created all of the Berlin Buick chrome badges.
After all of the body mods were completed, Browns blocked it out, gapped all of the shut lines, then shot a combo of PPG Tonic Brown and Ginger Beer, buried in four coats of clear.
Inside, a rollcage, fire system, and belts were all incorporated. A 1949 Buick dash was sectioned to fit, and then dash-to-door surrounds were fabricated. The portholes, trim to match the exterior, shift knob, and shift boot bezel are all the handiwork of Mike Ripp. A 1949 Buick steering wheel was cut down to fit the stock VW ring, and one-off Classic Instruments gauges fill the Buick dash. Stock VW seats were cut down for clearance, and then Rich Perez at RP Interiors in Horseheads, New York, covered everything in beige replicate leather.
There are many pitfalls and detours that can kill such an involved project like the Berlin Buick, but when everyone is on the same page and the owner has a concept in mind he and the shop he chooses sticks with, then unique and impactful vehicles such as this can be the result. As Robert’s VW attests, the wildest cars are yet to come.
The Berlin Buick hides its motivation well, with the only hint the wide ET Classic-V rear wheels and Nitto Drag Radials. Wheel tubs were fabb’d by Browns Metal Mods, who did virtually all of the body mods, body prep, and paint. Colors are PPG Tonic Brown and Ginger Beer.
Robert Freman originally purchased the 1956 oval-window Volkswagen body for $1,000, then spent years formulating his mid-engine plan. The tucked-in stock rear bumper incorporates 1959 Lincoln bumperettes housing the round taillights. Stock lid has been shaved, and while the fenders look widened, they are not.
Hiding in the back seat is the heart of this mid-engine Beetle beast: the 1963 215ci Buick/Rover aluminum engine. Jack Dineen at Dineen’s Repair in Little Falls, New York, handled all building aspects of the aluminum V8, including the Hilborn stack injection, now Holley/MSD-controlled. Through-the-body zoomies are by Browns, exiting through 1953 Buick portholes.
The entire car is a combo of Buick and Volkswagen, which is no more evident than inside where a 1949 Buick dash was modified to fit the bug, and the steering wheel is a mashup of Buick and Beetle. The gold shift knob is by Mike Ripp.
The Buick dash extensions are prominent here, as is Rich Perez’s upholstery work at RP Interiors in Horseheads, New York. Retro/contemporary beige replicate leather and rich cloth pattern blend well with PPG paint. Doors were converted to suicide with electric poppers. Note all of the rounded door and sill corners.
Check out the nasty profile. Windshield posts have been leaned back, and there’s a nice, subtle rake to the heavy top chop. Besides the removal of the stock running boards, the rockers have been rolled in to finish off the car’s bottom.
Stout Medeola 4-speed was adapted to the Buick with a Kennedy Engineering bellhousing, all supported by a tubing structure by Browns, who also created the belled panels. The Driveshaft Shop built the 8-inch 930 CV drive axles, all slathered in PPG Ginger Beer paint and chrome bracket accents.
Uh, uh, don’t get too close to those Buick portholes, they are the real deal conveniently exiting the exhaust through Browns-built zoomies.
It all looks so natural and like it was produced this way when you see it shiny and finished, but hundreds of hours went into planning and fabricating so that it looks this way. Robert says there is no tire rubbing or mystery noises, and that he plans on driving it every weekend he can, New York weather permitting.

Audi e-tron Quattro and Sportback: New Tech Details on the Tesla Model X Rival
Audi may have created a rather confusing pedigree for its e-tron brand; so far, there have been plenty of electric-motor-equipped teases but very few actual production vehicles beyond the A3 Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid. But that will soon change as the company gives the e-tron brand three new battery-electric vehicles as centerpieces. The first will arrive in late 2018 for Europe and early 2019 for the United States.
Recent interviews we conducted with the automaker’s R&D chief, Peter Mertens, and its technical director for powertrain development, Siegfried Pint, give us a better idea of how the upcoming e-tron Quattro—and the swoopier e-tron Sportback variant that will follow it by less than a year—will shape up. These models will slot neatly between the Q5 and Q7 in size; the interiors are expected to closely follow the cabin look and layout of the new 2019 Audi A8, while exterior styling will closely hew to the appearance of the concepts bearing the same names.
Audi e-tron Quattro concept.
These models most certainly won’t be “compliance vehicles,” as we refer to electrified versions of existing gasoline models engineered to earn California zero-emission-vehicle (ZEV) credits. Together they’ll be the first true rivals for the Tesla Model X—and the first from the Volkswagen Group built on a new set of battery-electric vehicle components developed both for global sale and volume production. Just as with those models, they’ll be offered at multiple battery sizes (at least two, in Audi’s case), corresponding to the driving range that’s needed.
Next-Level Charging
Charging is an important part of market acceptance. Audi confirmed that 150-kW CCS fast charging will be the high-speed charging base level for the production e-tron. That rate will allow them to regain more than 80 percent of charge—more than 200 miles recovered—in a half hour. Officials hinted that these models have been engineered to handle higher-power (perhaps 350 kW) fast charging but that the technology probably won’t be enabled from the start. Mertens confirmed that Audi and Porsche are working closely together on the platform and some core components, although he declined to say whether the two VW Group brands are sharing in the 800-volt charging system Porsche is reportedly still considering for its Mission E sedan.
Although there’s currently no publicly accessible 150-kW charging in the United States, that’s expected to change dramatically by the time the e-tron SUV launches in 2019. At that point, there will be in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 sites with 150-kW capability in the U.S. via Electrify America, plus a smaller number of additional sites from other charging providers.
Mertens confirmed that inductive (wireless) charging will play an important role in replenishing the e-trons’ batteries at home and work, although he wasn’t yet willing to disclose which supplier the company is working with. He did add that inductive charging will also be a “key technology” for the brand’s plug-in hybrids.
All-Weather Capability, Repeat Performance
Tesla’s vehicles tend to lose performance, we’ve observed on more than one occasion, after repeatedly tapping all-out acceleration. Audi’s Pint assured us that won’t be the case with these upcoming e-tron products, something we look forward to confirming in our own testing. “We have a requirement that the vehicle has to repeat its full power,” he said. “And the one parameter that enables you to repeat is having a low temperature in the electric-motor electronics and battery systems.”
To that end, these models will all have enclosed liquid cooling for the battery, traction motors, and some other components. “Batteries without liquid cooling will not be seen in the future, as the cell technology that we have these days only works within a very narrow [temperature] range,” Pint said he anticipates.
Furthermore, the e-tron has been engineered as a global vehicle, Pint emphasized, so a lot of attention has been paid to battery cooling and the durability of the entire power and drive systems. Both the e-tron and e-tron Sportback will follow a two-supplier strategy—with pouch cells from LG or prismatic cells from Samsung both being accommodated for in the development process. Pint reported no cooling issues with either of the cells but said he appreciates the flexibility. “Our modules are built so that we can exchange cells without changing the battery housing,” he said. “It’s the same for both cell formats.”
Better Traction/Stability Than Models with a Tailpipe, Audi Says
All e-tron Quattro models will have all-wheel drive, of course. Base models will have a two-motor system (one in back, one in front), while an upper-spec model will have a three-motor system (two in back, one in front). The latter arrangement, Pint said, makes the e-tron corner “like a hunting dog chasing a rabbit,” and it allows for the transfer of torque both front to rear and, at the rear, left to right. Pint said that the top-spec Audis are capable of applying up to 1500 lb-ft of torque to a single wheel. Not that they’ll do that in production: “Our suspension engineers aren’t able to apply all that [torque], so we have a limit for vehicle safety,” he said.
The system provides an opportunity for nuance, however. Because the torque can be fine-tuned within nanoseconds, the system can provide neutral handling across a wide range of speeds and dynamic situations, and it can support the lateral force at the tire, reducing polar inertia and theoretically making the car feel lighter than it is. It’s what gives the three-motor system in the e-tron SUV better all-weather traction and handling than any equivalent gasoline or diesel model, Pint said. So the three-motor will make it into production. “It’s already in testing, and I personally did some winter testing last winter,” he said. “It does perform really well.”
Motors That Avoid Conflict
Audi’s upcoming e-tron products will even be different at the motor level. The motors are seen as core components and thus won’t be farmed out to a supplier, said Pint. They’re developed and produced internally and, he revealed, probably won’t follow either the AC-induction design that you’ll find in the Tesla Model S or the permanent-magnet design from the Model 3 and many other models. Instead, Audi’s e-tron products will likely use specially designed current-excited synchronous motors.
“If you are able to develop and produce the rotor [the portion of the motor that rotates] properly, you get the best of both worlds—the efficiency and higher output of a permanent-magnet motor and an advantage at high speeds,” Pint said, adding that Audi doesn’t want to deal with the mineral and raw-material risks. “So we’re putting a lot of effort into magnet-free electric motors with the power density of a permanent magnet but the costs of an induction motor.”
Quattro Performance for the 2020s?
While all of the above describes Audi’s first two all-electric vehicles, the e-tron and e-tron Sportback, the automaker has been mum about the third EV variant. Our best guess at this point is that it will end up being either a compact crossover an even more performance-focused model.
Don’t Wait for an Audi Q7 Plug-In Hybrid in the U.S.
2019 Audi e-tron Quattro: Tesla’s Nemesis Spied in Production Form
Audi A8: Review, Photos, News, Info
While any system involving in-wheel motors can be ruled out—these are for now essentially restricted to concept-car flights of fancy—the four-motor setup in Audi’s recent Aicon concept is something to take seriously. As a potential tease for an all-electric reinvention of the Audi Quattro, it’s certainly intriguing.
