now that it's been a few months, can i say that i didn't like the ted lasso finale and i think the series as a whole got weaker and less focused the more bill lawrence stepped away?

more thoughts below the cut

s1 is peak television (that seriously benefited from its release date in the middle of a global pandemic) in part bc it was so tightly plotted and each episode stayed as close to that 30 minute mark as possible. bill lawrence, tv superstar alum from back in the days of scrubs, helmed s1 and it's obvious that his expertise really helped to keep the show zeroed in on the story it was trying to tell.

s2 was clunkier—in part bc apple added 2 additional episodes last minute after the season was already written, but also bc bill lawrence began to step away and act more in a supervisory role. the episodes became longer, the story became less focused, the cast more sprawling, but there was still a cohesive idea keeping it all together. there are some real high points in s2 (i'm looking at you man city) that really shined and helped make clear why this show was still so popular.

but s3 felt v jarring in comparison to the rest. bill lawrence was clearly v focused on his new show shrinking and seemed to have fully passed on the reigns to jason and the others. in the moment s3 was enjoyable to watch bc you could keep hoping that they'd get to other things later. but it never really came to pass. and this is partially bc the show and the team behind it seemed to be stuck in a terribly awkward place of having promised this would be the end, then deciding they didn't really want to end it...only for it to be clear that their lead and star was ready for it to be over. everything about s3 feels? messy. unbalanced. ted takes the backseat in stories where he should be center focus bc they're clearly trying to prime the audience for a future version of ted lasso without ted. episodes were bloated with 50, 60, 70 (!!!) minute runtimes and even with the additional time characters and plotlines were introduced and quickly abandoned with little fanfare (hello shandy) or left unresolved entirely (keeley, roy, jamie). ted, who had been the emotional center for so much of the show, felt untethered from the rest of the cast and the ending felt less like a grand finale and more like a broken down car sputtering to a pause.

i won't be surprised if they come back with a new spinoff under a new name but at this point i'm happy to hop off the ride. if i get the urge to do a rewatch in the future i'll probably stop after the s1 finale. i enjoyed it while it lasted but i'm happy to move on now.

I decided to watch No Heroics, a superhero sitcom from 2008, because James Lance plays one of the superheroes. Do NOT recommend, sadly, but Nick Mohammed just showed up in this episode so at least I've got two Ted Lasso alums for the price of one.

Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde’s Family Photos With Son Otis and Daughter Daisy

Looking back! Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde welcomed two children together before splitting in November 2020.

The former couple started dating in 2011 and got engaged two years later. Their son, Otis, and their daughter, Daisy, arrived in 2014 and 2016, respectively.

For the actor, he sees “staying around” was the key to being a great parent to his little ones. “Being present is a good quality,” the Saturday Night Live alum told Us Weekly in April 2018. “At least I’ll know how I screwed them up!”

He went on to joke about the siblings’ dynamic, telling Us, “All Daisy wants to do is play, but playing to her is putting his toys in her mouth. So he gets really mad about that, understandably. When I explained to him that that’s Janet Jackson and Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson is Michael’s younger sister, it’s like of like, ‘Oh, she might be useful!’ He recognizes that, which is good.”

The following year, Wilde exclusively told Us about taking working motherhood “day by day, step by step” so as not to become overwhelmed.

“I think it’s just biting off as much as you can chew, you know, slowly and incrementally,” the filmmaker explained in January 2019. “And I think [it’s] knowing what you’re getting yourself into.”

The New York native added that with so much going on at home and on set, she and the Ted Lasso star had to “prioritize date night.” Wilde gushed at the time: “We go out and have a lot of fun. We were both really social people when we met, and we didn’t want to give that up when we became parents, so we’re really consistent about our time with them, but we also prioritize a couple of date nights a week. We go to the theater. I love to eat food, so we go to a lot of restaurants, see shows, music — it’s New York! It’s a good thing about living here, live entertainment.”

By November of the following year, Us confirmed that Otis and Daisy’s parents had split, calling off their engagement. The exes “butted heads on many occasions,” a source exclusively told Us in January 2021. “There were arguments and fights over career decisions and where to live.”

The actress moved on with former One Direction member Harry Styles, making their relationship public at his manager’s wedding in January 2021. This “devastated” Sudeikis, the insider said.

Following the pair’s split, Wilde and Sudeikis continued to coparent Otis and Daisy. However, things came to a head in April 2022 when the Don’t Worry Darling director was served custody papers while onstage at CinemaCon.

“First, Olivia said that if I did not reside full-time in Los Angeles, she would allow me to spend time with Otis and Daisy on weekends and during vacation periods — thus depriving me of my right to parent the children during important periods of their lives,” Sudeikis claimed in the court docs of his reasoning for filing the motion, which were published by the Daily Mail the following August. “Second, Olivia said that she intended to relocate with the children to London following the close of school in 2023.”

Wilde, for her part, filed her own custody petition in August 2022, slamming Sudeikis’ “outrageous” legal tactics. She alleged in her paperwork: “Jason’s actions were clearly intended to threaten me and catch me off guard. He could have served me discreetly, but instead, he chose to serve me in the most aggressive manner possible. … Since Jason has made it clear that we will not be able to work this out for our children’s sake outside of the court system, I filed a petition for custody in Los Angeles.”

In January, Sudeikis won his second Golden Globe for Best Television Actor in a Musical/Comedy Series for his portrayal of the endearing coach, and as the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards nominations were announced, the series was tagged for an ensemble cast SAG award as well as several others. Ted Lasso isn’t just winning Emmys, of course. This time around, Ted Lasso was nominated for 20 Emmys including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing, and Outstanding Acting nods for nearly every returning cast member of the series. In 2022, it’s more of the same old massive success again. The crew nabbed seven Emmys in total, one for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy for Sudeikis, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Hannah Waddingham, and Outstanding Comedy Series to name a few. In 2021, the show won three Emmys for sound mixing and single-camera picture editing, and outstanding casting, and was nominated for 17 more. If Emmy nominations and wins are any sort of barometer for a show’s success, Ted Lasso is a hit. Still no confirmation on when the season will drop on Apple TV+. went on to share the post, confirming that the third season is going into production. In January 2022, Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard himself) shared a post on Instagram where both he and Sudeikis were boarding a small plane with the caption, “Here we go.” Warner Bros. ‘Ted Lasso’ has started production on Season 3. Perhaps they’re waiting for their colossal Emmy haul before making any announcement. Production has already begun, per Collider, with many of the main cast members having signed new contracts for the show, but no word on an official release date for the third (and possibly final) season. The third season of Ted Lasso was reportedly scheduled to drop sometime in late summer 2022, but that does not appear to be the case. What will happen in Season 3? It’s too soon to tell, but we know it’s coming. Throughout the first two seasons, Lasso works on making the team better and building relationships. Lasso, who has left behind a son and a wife in the U.S., has no idea, and comes in with high spirits despite the fact that almost no one wants him there, least of all the team or the fans. Welton is going through an acrimonious split with her ex-husband, and she has an ulterior motive hiring Lasso she wants AFC Richmond to lose badly to humiliate her ex. Saturday Night Live alum Sudeikis is at his most charming as college football coach Ted Lasso, who has moved to London to take over coaching AFC Richmond, a soccer team owned by Rebecca Welton (played by Hannah Waddington). I think it has a lot to do with his secret shortbread cookie recipe and the stellar supporting cast, but that’s just an educated guess.įor those of you who haven’t seen either of the first two seasons of Ted Lasso, you are in for a treat. Even those of us who are not exactly sports fans can’t get enough of Ted Lasso. Apparently we all wanted to watch a show about a good-natured football coach moving to England to become a soccer (British football) coach and figure out life across the pond. No wonder Ted Lasso will be back for a third season. The show hits this great sweet spot of being endearing and funny and weirdly sentimental without being snarky or condescending. Jason Sudeikis and the rest of the Ted Lasso crew have really pulled off a miracle with their hit series.

If Jim Brockmire can go from being a one-off, short-form character to a great (like really, really great) TV show, then why can’t another sports-related character do the same? Well, that’s the bet that Apple TV+ is making with Ted Lasso. 

Ted Lasso is a character developed by SNL-alum Jason Sudeikis for NBC Sports to promote their English Premier League soccer coverage (sorry British readers, we’re gonna go with “soccer” on this one for consistency’s sake). Lasso is an American football coach who decides to try his hand at coaching the “other” football across the Atlantic. Lasso coached Tottenham Hotspur for the 2013 season in which they finished a disappointing sixth in the table. Check out the original Ted Lasso short below:

Now Apple TV+ has commissioned Sudeikis to turn the character into his own eponymous series. Sudeikis will serve as an executive producer on the show alongside Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Whiskey Cavalier). Sudeikis, Lawrence, Joe Kelly, and Brendan Hunt developed the project. Warner Bros. Television is producing as well, alongside Universal Television (a division of NBC Universal, where the character was developed.

Ted Lasso Release Date

The first three episodes of Ted Lasso are set to premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, August 14. The remaining seven episodes of the 10-episode season will follow on a weekly basis.

Ted Lasso Cast

Jason Sudeikis is best known for his time as a critical player on Saturday Night Live. In addition to that, the actor has starred in films such as Horrible Bosses, The Angry Birds Movie, and Downsizing. He also briefly turned up in a cameo role in The Mandalorian where he did the unthinkable and was mean to Baby Yoda. Bill Lawrence is a prolific TV writer and producer who has created the sitcoms Scrubs, Spin City, Cougar Town, and more. His most recent effort, Whiskey Cavalier, was recently canceled at ABC.

 The series also stars Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster and Nick Mohammed.

Ted Lasso Story Details

Apple’s official description of the character and series reads “Jason Sudeikis plays Ted Lasso, a small-time college football coach from Kansas hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer.”

It remains to be seen how Ted Lasso makes the transition from character to full on series. But again: if Jim Brockmire can do it, then there’s some hope that ol’ Ted can do the same.
