Dangerous Liaisons, Ch.1

Summary: Catalina Romero has finally built the courage to return to Santo Padre, California after nearly 5 years. What is left in the rubble of her past?

“One, two, three, four, five, si... one, two, three...”

It doesn’t take much for someone like Catalina Romero to get distracted. She is convinced that her attention span is of a dog with a bone in a squirrel infested area. The bone is long forgotten, just as counting the amount of boxes while listening to a random podcast.The moving truck will arrive anytime soon and it must be precise in how much she is moving.

Despite it being 3 weeks since she quit her job and informed her landlord that she will not be renewing her upcoming lease, it still sounds funny to her that she is moving. After 4 1/2 years living in the Northern California, Catalina is heading back down to Southern California to the small town of Santo Padre.

The distant sound of motorcycles catch her attention as tries to recount the boxes once more. She stops in her movements to listen if they are just passing by, however when the engine sounds get louder and much closer, eventually idling, she knows they’ve stopped right under her apartment unit.

She sticks her head out of the open window, the shine of two beautifully crafted harleys beaming back at her thanks to the scorching sun. The two men remove their helmets and swing their legs behind them and on the ground below.

“You couldn’t wait one more day, I know the drive just fine!” Catalina calls out and the two men look up. The taller of the two removing his dark shades. “Not I, mija, Tu padrino.” That’s when the other man looks up, smiling ear to ear.

Taza Romero and Obispo Losa look to each other as they see the young girl disappear from above them, smiling in excitement knowing that they won’t need to commute to see her anymore.

Once the screen door opens, it’s an ambush. Catalina jumps into her father’s arms and quickly encasing him a tight hug. His hearty laugh rumbles and he squeezes, leaning back to get a good look at his little girl. It’s been a few months since he’s seen her. Business with the motorcycle club has had him more busy in the past few months than it ever has in the last decade. But with her now deciding to move to Santo Padre, he is thrilled.

“And me?”

She releases her hold on her dad and jumps right into her godfather’s embrace. Bishop feels a large weight lift off his chest as he holds one of the most important people in his arms again.

When Catalina was younger. Bishop acted as a father figure for her as well. He didn’t have a family himself so when Taza had asked him to be her godfather, he vowed to love her as if she were his own. It broke his heart when she decided to move up north with her mother’s family those few years back. And as the club business grew bigger and more dangerous, he and her father also carried a small worry that they didn’t have her in arms reach to keep her safe.

“You two didn’t need to come all the way out here to escort me like I’m Princess Diana.” After a few more seconds of hugging, the two release. “Bad example as she died in a car accident, but I would have been just fine.”

She rolls her eyes as they give her a look reminding her that it’ll ease their mind to be there. They all share a laugh and head into her nearly packed up apartment to get ready to load her life she’s built onto a moving truck.

Like always, her dad and godfather are all knowing. The drive was long but the occasional looking in the mirrors and seeing the bikes follow gave her a sense of security. After a pit stop for some early dinner, they arrive at the Romero family house that is a few streets away from the Mayans MC clubhouse. The crickets were the only sound after the engines of the bikes cutoff.

“Finally. No more moan and groan from these two.” A new voice fills the air as Hank Loza stands on the porch, smiling at how grown she has gotten. In Catalina’s defense, she hasn’t grown much since the last time everyone has seen her but it is obvious that she surely isn’t the same young lady from all those years ago.

“I apologize for that, hey Hank!” They embrace in a hug. He takes a good look at her and everyone starts to pile out of the house. Bishop had let the club know of her arrival tonight and to make themselves available to help out.

Gilly, Coco and Riz has ambushed her the second they exit the house. The smell of leather and tobacco smother as she is bear hugged. “Oh god, too much love. Too much!” A harmony of laughter as they mess her hair up.

Despite being an attractive girl from the get go, none of the guys saw her as anything but a young sister to protect. It was mostly from the threats from the president and his vp, but also because they all knew better than to do so especially because during the last few years of her stay in Santo Padre, she was Angel’s girl. Angel Ignacio Reyes, she couldn’t help but look around for him.

Catalina didn’t grow up much around her dad’s lifestyle. The occasional stops by the clubhouse but she never lived around them. She lived with her dad’s sister right outside of town. But the older she got, the less she saw her dad, the more she longed to be around him. When she turned 18, she made a promise with Taza that should she go to college for at least 4 years, she could be around the MC as much as she desired.

And when she did so, she moved where she stands now at 22 years old. When she met the one of the three prospects at the time, Angel Reyes.

“I hope you are hungry, we got meat cooking on the grill!” Gilly calls out as she is pulled out from the memories that flood her mind. Catalina pat her stomach and rubs her hands as they head around the house to the backyard.

She is shocked to see how much things have changed, how well kept the backyard is. Not that she ever doubted that he father could keep it up on his own. Which is probably also thanks to muscle of the club.

A cold bottle of beer is handed to her as everyone settles in the back and the music is resumed. GIlly and Coco at the grill, Bishop and Hank chatting. It’s almost like she hadn’t left.

The gate of the fence opens and a pile a girls come through. Ah, Vicki’s girls. She says to herself as they each head to a Mayan. Catalina almost gag when a young girl, who must not even be much older than herself, leans into her dad’s side.

“5 fuckin’ years and you still haven’t changed your hair?” The voice makes her jump as she turns on her heel to see him towering over her. A bottle pressed against his lips and tipped up, though he still has his eyes on her.

It takes her a moment to say something, he watches her with a confused face. ‘I could never figure out what I want so, I stuck with what I know. Hey, Angel.” When his name sounds from her, he feels the same thing he use to feel. He scratches the back of his head, “Pres says your back for good. How long is that for?”

She smiles and looks away from him, meeting his eyes just as quick again. “I’m here for good. Promise.”

“I’ll believe it when I see it.” Though his voice sounds cold, his face shows the opposite. The smile and his relaxed body stance. Angel feels at peace. To see her again. This makes her relinquish any worries that things between the two would be rocky with her return after how things had ended.

“Welcome back, mi dulce.” He leans down and presses a kiss to her cheek. His hand lingers on the side of her neck where he held onto. He lets it fall off as he steps behind her and towards the others. She turns and watches him hug his club brothers.

Catalina feels hopeful of being back home in Santo Padre.

After a night of good food and company, Catalina wakes the next day later than she normally would considering she drank quite a bit after not doing so in a couple weeks. The house empty and quiet, she finds a plate of breakfast wrapped up for her. Just like old times, despite her being able to do so herself, her father takes care of her.

She remembers her way to the clubhouse like nothing. The large gate being pushed back by Angel as she drives her car through. It’s a lot to take in. She takes a deep breath in and reminds herself that she really is here. Angel jogs over to the driver’s side after closing the gate to open the door for her.

“Mornin’.” He leans on the door as she gets out and stands in front of him. Their eyes never leaving each other as Angel shuts the door.

“You get as much sleep as me?”

He says to her. His voice but a whisper as she licks her lips looking at his. This use to be a habit of hers; staring at his lips. It wasn’t just the fact that she liked them against her own, no. It became a defense tactic for her. A way to stop staring into his deep dark eyes since she tends to get lost into them too quickly.

“A few good hours but not much considering I’m back....here.” She looks around them, taking in the sight of the closed into clubhouse and nearby scrap yard. It is Angel’s turn to look at her lips. His heart hammering as he looks at the small space between them.

He opens his mouth to say something to her, anything. That he missed her? He is both excited but hesitant the she is back and back for good? That she still looks like the same one who up and left with a piece of his heart all those years ago? Angel didn’t want their reunion to start of with questions of the past. But he didn’t have a chance to talk with her.

“Templo!”

Bishops voices pulls their attention to the porch of the clubhouse. Angel groans and nods towards his president. Catalina lifts her arm to wave at him as he does so stepping back through the door.

Angel turns back to her and brushes his hand against her arm before backing up and heading in with the rest of the guys.Catalina remembers that is their sacred time as a club, no one else allowed. She decides to admire everyone’s bikes up close. She can recognize her father’s, Bishop’s and Angel’s instantly. Her hand rests on the handles as she looks over the green harley. It looks like a few more designs were added onto it.

Catalina swings her leg over as she sits on the bike. She reaches up and places her hands on the high rising handles. A few memories begin to play in her mind as she closes her eyes. She can remember the first time Angel took her on a ride. It wasn’t her first one but her first one on his bike. The way she held onto him as he sped up every chance he got.

The sound of the screen door slamming pulls her from the thought, her eyes following the sound.

EZ Reyes exits the clubhouse as the rest of the club sits in for the meeting. With him being a fresh Prospect, he didn’t have a seat yet. Catalina’s eyes meets his as he descends down the few steps and towards the bikes. She hadn’t recognized him and confirmed the suspicion that he must a be new prospect.

“One of the nicest but not the best of the group if you ask me.” EZ says as he gets closer, pointing to his brothers bike. She snickers as she looks down at the bike and shakes her head in disagreement.

“Bishop’s has the be the nicest. I mean, that color? Angel went safe with green.” She looks between the two bikes then back at the unfamiliar face. “Lina.”

“Ezekiel, EZ.” He shakes her hand as she smiles at him. To him, he knew she was Taza’s daughter. Then the longer he stared did he realize this is her. This is the her that his brother has mentioned a few times. Angel never went into the detail about the mysterious Lina.

“Angel’s kid bother, yeah he’s mentioned you before.” She says as they release the grip from the handshake. Catalina looks over the younger Reyes. In her years being in Santo Padre. she never put a face to the name. Angel only briefly mention he had younger brother who got himself locked up and that was that.

He isn’t a tall as his older brother but not too far off either. Truthfully the two had little resemblance. But as her mind tried to remember their mother from pictures she was shown, she could see a little of the beautiful lady in EZ. She gives him a tight-lipped smile as he hangs his hand on the front of kutte.

She notices his big arms, ones that could have any girl with weak knees. She won’t lie to herself that she didn’t feel the slight weakness hit hers as he approached her a few moments ago.

“How’s that going?” She nods to the prospect patch.

EZ follows her line of sight and looks down at it as well. His chest fills with air as he ponders what to say. He thought to himself to answer carefully. She can easily report back to her dad, to the president, to his sponsor which is his brother. With an exhale he smirks looking back at her, “It’s new still so I can’t form a honest opinion just yet.”

“Good answer.” They both laugh. The moment between them interrupted by the commotion of the club piling out. They turn their attention to the guys, Angel noticing the close proximity of Catalina and EZ.

She walks up to the group of guys who greet her. Angel smiling at her as he passes by to head to his bike, “Com’n prospect, we got business.”

Catalina watches the two brothers stride next to each other. Her focus solely on Angel as he straps on his helmet. He looks over at her as he puts on his shades and starts up his bike.

“Feels like yesterday, huh?” Taza says now standing beside her. She hums in response as she watches the gate open for them, the Reyes brothers riding out.

Things do have a nostalgic feel to them. She prepared herself for a warm as well as a possible cold welcome. Not just from the obvious,Angel, but the entire club as well. Though it was nothing but a sweet ease in. Capable of taking things into her own hands, she is a liability to club should she get herself into trouble.And her reunion with Angel had gone a lot smoother than she anticipated with their departure being of a messy nature. But things seem like it will be possible to go as they were.

So she thinks.

Currently losing my mind

So I live in this really old really not well kept up with duplex that’s got a lot of issues. Some are aesthetic like shoddy paint jobs, tons of wholes in the walls from the last tenant hanging stuff and neither them nor my landlord filling them in, bits of the popcorn ceiling in my bathroom and bedroom (it’s a one bedroom duplex) have fallen off (sometimes falling on me while I’m in bed asleep). But then other stuff way more important is at issue, like how there’s a leak that causes water to collect in the vent above my bed which causes that one (1) of three (3) patches to falll, the fact that I have two broken windows that don’t lock (one of which is large enough and low enough to the ground someone can easily climb in through the outside if they knew it was broken. I have done so a couple of times), also also the lock on my front door is broken so for about a year it didn’t lock and I had to rely entirely on the glass screen door for protection (I have since had a friend over who broke it in a different way so that it now just doesn’t open, which is annoying but more safe).

When I told my landlord about the door and the windows as they were more obvious danger issues, and the water damage at the time wasn’t nearly as bad, she told me she’d have to think about what to do. A week later she told me she was selling the house. I stayed during the selling of the house because the place was so run down there was no way my rent would go up that much, and I hoped whoever bought it would fix the obvious issues.

The person who bought it did not do an inspection and was very surprised and upset when I asked her if she was going to be fixing the broken door and window if I stayed. She said there was no way for her to start making a profit if she fixed them so she wouldn’t.

I started looking for somewhere safer to live, but pre-COVID rent was stupid high every where around me. I make well over minimum wage here, and I didn’t have any student loans and just paid basic bills and insurance, but even with that I couldn’t get approved for an apartment in an area that was run down or dangerous. And I desperately wanted a place that wasn’t falling apart around me at this point.

I went back to my landlord to ask if I could stay for now while I figured out my finances so I could afford to move out. At first she said it was fine, but after coming in for an inspection of some kind, she “found out” I had a cat and that they didn’t allow animals in their rentals. The first thing you see when you walk in through the side door is a huge litter box (I have two cats and my litter box comes with a lid I always put on when people are coming over so they don’t have to see anything going on in there). She had visited the house before she bought it. She knew I had at least one cat. She also knew I had been living there for about two years before she bought it so at this point if there was going to be any damage done from the cats, it was already done. So I couldn’t figure out for the life of me why she was suddenly bringing it up and telling me I had to get out.

Knowing it was legal for her to do this, I started desperately trying to figure something out. I was looking for rental houses in lower income areas and I had applied for an apartment at a place I had lived at before and the building was fairly new and fairly cheap, but places were going fast and there was a wait list. I told her I was waiting on the apartment, but a couple of months went by, including the projected date they’d have a space open for me, and I still didn’t have an apartment.

My landlord was ok with waiting at first, but then she had someone lined up to come in after me. There was one month where she was telling me I was selfish and putting everyone in a bad spot because I hadn’t moved out yet, that I was inconveniencing people. My last landlord (someone I used to be close to) had told this woman that I barely made any money, that I just didn’t have a lot saved up. My current landlord thought I was poor, but was trying to kick me out.

But wait, it gets worse.

Towards the end of that month I am half packed, getting ready to move into my friend’s place while I waited for an apartment to come available for me to move into or to find somewhere else because it was becoming obvious she wouldn’t let me stay another month even if I had nowhere to go. Towards the end of the month, however, she told me the people who were going to move in after me no longer needed the place, and I was welcome to stay if I wanted to.

I wasn’t sure how to feel about it, but figured I should take her up on her offer because the rent would still be much cheaper at my current place and I could work on getting a better paying job in the mean time. She still refused the fix anything and was raising my rent $200, well more than the place was worth, but I didn’t have much better options.

For this some context on this next part, my neighbors on the other side of my duplex, who are some of the sweetest people I’ve ever met, one of them actually works at the store owned and run by the new landlord. So, sometimes when I’d pass them in the driveway or something I’d hear bits of information from them that my landlord hadn’t bothered to tell me.

Like how when it looked like I was moving out, my landlord had apparently told my neighbor that she was planning on replacing all of the windows and some of the doors. I was pissed, but at the time thought I’d be moving out soon so decided not to let it bother me too much.

Then, after we started working through me actually staying and her working on sending me a lease to sign for a year, there was a night when I was talking to my neighbors. I had the front door open as at this point my friend hadn’t rebroken it to never open, and my neighbors could see inside my house to the mess of packing I had done and had yet to undo because I wasn’t sure if my landlord was going to change her mind or not. My neighbors asked how the unpacking was going and told them that I hadn’t started yet because I wasn’t sure if I was actually going to get to stay. My neighbor waved her hand and said “Oh, her daughter bought a house so they don’t need it anymore.”

They told me about how my landlord’s daughter and her family were moving back to the area and needed a place to crash while they looked for a house to buy, and my landlord was planning on letting them use my place.

Based on that, apparently the only problem was that I was already here and wanting to stay, but the good news was that I didn’t have a lease so they could kick me out whenever they wanted to, all they needed was an excuse and having a pet worked. The could force me out so they didn’t have to share a house anymore.

This landlord thought that I was poor.

Livid, but feeling a bit more secure with a lease now and, again, not really having any better options I stayed. I stayed for a year and they came and looked at the water damage once but fixed nothing. Not the water damage, which the ceiling still gets wet every time it rains, not the windows, not the front door. Nothing.

Knowing I didn’t want to stay another year, I decided I was going to use my savings and buy a house. I had inherited quite a bit of money recently and decided I wasn’t going to deal with landlords anymore, that I was going to live somewhere where I knew if something was broken and was dangerous to me, it would get fixed. I let my landlord know that I would not be renewing the lease. She was fine with that. A few minutes later, she asked if she could send someone in a few days to measure some windows and doors.

The moment I told this woman I was leaving, she decided to fix the things that were putting my life in danger. The thing she refused to fix because “she wouldn’t make a profit off the house” if she did.

I don’t know how else to interpret that other than a big “fuck you” for not getting out of my home when she wanted me to because her daughter’s family needed a place to crash for a month while they bought a house. I don’t know how else to take this except punishment. My friend said she probably knew she couldn’t rent the place out again with it being the way it is. I don’t know how long she would have waited to fix anything, if she ever would have gotten around to it, if I resigned the lease.

Fuck. Landlords.

FUCK. LANDLORDS.

I am lucky that I had friends who were willing and able to take me in when it looked like I was about to be kicked out. I am lucky (in a way) that I happened to inherit enough money to help me get out of this situation. I’m so inexplicably angry over what she did to me, but I also can’t stop thinking about what might have happened if I didn’t have any of those fall backs, if I was as poor as she thought I was.

so! literally no one asked, but these last 3 weeks have been a hell of a ride let me TELL YOU

so happy mun-day now you get to hear all about it!! (with pictures, I’m not a monster)

here’s the cliffnotes version:

december week 1: simultaneously moved back into a place and took classes then moved out of that place while taking classes and planning a 2-day overland trip from sweden to madrid. took said trip.

december week 2: attended the unfccc climate conference COP25 in madrid, got kicked out for protesting in solidarity with indigenous ppl & kids, got let back into COP the next day & proceeded to go to more panels and also protests. no i did not see greta thunberg but she was there. I did not see harrison ford either. I did shake al gore’s hand tho.

december week 3: week #1 with my mom’s new twin one-eyed cyclops kitties (yes both of them), spent the week frantically writing 2400 words of nonsense that hopefully resolved themselves into two coherent enough papers to snag me a nice grade then took a 36-hour trip up to london to see my sister perform at her bitchin new job.

Hell Week (or) Why You Sometimes Should Fly to Climate Conferences

So, after the nonsense with The Roommate From Hell (reddit rant here), I moved out of my room at her place and back into the dorms (where I still had a lease through the end of December). That required a fair bit of effort, but I moved things bit by bit over the course of about a week, and it was manageable.

But I had to be out of the dorms and have the place clean by the time I left for the climate conference, which in itself was a whole lot of coordination. Wednesday the 4th of December was probably among the worst, most frustrating days I have ever had, and I desperately hope I never have to deal with that level of fuck this fuck you fuck me fuck everything for a very, very long time. Somehow -- by some miraculous act of the gods -- I pulled it out, and managed to get my stuff into my friend’s basement, my plants into another friend’s apartment, my bags packed, my room clean as a whistle, my self moved into my hostel, and to every damn class that week. My interrail tickets came the day I planned to leave -- it was a tight fit -- and I managed to book trains and busses from Uppsala to Madrid with half an hour to spare, and get on the first train (Uppsala to Stockholm) in good time.

The next 48 hours went like this:

Stockholm -> Copenhagen (by train): uneventful, but Copenhagen train station on a Friday night is a little dicey, especially when you’re dragging around a 45 lb suitcase and another 15 lbs on your back

Copenhagen -> Hamburg (by overnight FlixBus): Uneventful, and I was sitting by a window with no one sitting next to me, so I was able to doze a bit on the trip.

Hamburg -> Basel (by high-speed rail): This one I should have booked. The website said that a reservation was recommended, and I understand why. If I’d had a quiet cabin -- or even just a consistent seat for the whole 7-hour journey -- I’d have been able to get a decent night’s sleep. Instead, I kept having to move to give people their reserved seats, and didn’t get more than an hour of uninterrupted sleep.

Basil -> Olten (train): this one was a mistake

Olten -> Brienz (train): where the fuck am I

Brienz -> Lausanne (train): oh right yes that’s the direction I want to go yes good get on that one

Lausanne -> Geneva (train): oh thank fuck, I 100% know where I am and am back on track. Sunglasses & 30 hours without sleep is a Look.

Geneva: Spend 3 hours with my mom, put a week’s worth of clothes into a considerably smaller suitcase, eat dinner. meet mom’s new kittens, Saga and Luna

Geneva -> Lyon (bus): Get confused about which bus to get on, get told off by the bus driver we were trying to convince to let us on his bus, realized mom had been trying to put me on the wrong bus. Get on the right bus. Go to Lyon with bus driver who speaks no French or English, only Spanish.

Lyon -> Barcelona (night bus): Hell. Just. Absolute Hell Bus. Wanted To Die all night. Assigned to aisle seat just before the very back next to a very, very tall man who was quite polite but had no room for his legs. Behind us were two men, one of whom was loudly chewing gum until he took off his shoes and fell asleep, the other of whom snored like a gd bulldozer. Aisle seat and wailing baby a few rows down meant that my chances of sleeping comfortably were 0. I did manage to doze off a bit, but only because I was so strung out from not sleeping the night before. Eventually made it to Barcelona alive and lent my phone to the very nice lady with the wailing baby (plus like 5 other family members, none of whom had cell service).

Barcelona -> Madrid (train): Absolutely gorgeous train ride through the Spanish countryside that I really did want to stay awake to enjoy. Managed to do so until we got to an elevation where it was just thick, dense fog and I let myself fall asleep.

Madrid: I arrived at my hostel groggy, dazed, and in pain from two bad nights in a row. I considered a nap, but also considered that I’d need to wake up early the next morning and would need to fall asleep. Opted to try to set up my COP25 blog instead. Failed due to aforementioned grogginess. Walked to the corner to get some food and tried to pay for it with Swedish kronor, which didn’t work. Apologized, explained to the amused man that it had been a long weekend, paid him in Euros instead. Used the hostel’s dry sauna (!!!!), took a shower, and went to bed.

COP25 - The Old White Fuckening

So, listen, I’m not going to go into detail about COP. If you want to read about how much of a tonedeaf clusterfuck the negotiations were (as opposed to the really interesting, inspiring stuff happening in the side sessions), BBC has some good articles.

If you want to listen to some of the press conferences and plenaries, here they are. I especially recommend the ones by the Women’s Earth and Climate Caucus, Fridays for Future, and as many of the Indigenous Peoples’ statements as you can (most of them are in Spanish and/or Portuguese. Because the COP was supposed to be held in Chile, many of the registered Indigenous participants were from Amazonas because it was supposed to not be far to travel).

Click the link, and then click “Join the event.” I again recommend the ones by Indigenous groups (if you can understand them -- we all had translation headphones in the sessions, but I don’t speak Spanish, so I can’t really go back and revisit them). Also, this "feminist attempt at connecting the dots” on “climate crisis, corporate power, and climate finance” and this one session from a Nigerian NGO and the government about One Health and the connection between climate change, disease, and other health risks -- and how badass Nigeria is at tackling them.

On the subject of tonedeafness, some absolute bullshit went down on Wednesday, December 11th.

Here’s what happened.

COP25 2: The Old White Fuckeninger (Starring Military Police!)

So on Wednesday, December 11th, Greta Thunberg -- environmental wunderkind with truly glorious bitchface -- sat on a panel before a hall full of condescending adults in which she demanded accountability and immediate action from national leaders.

At the end of her speech, the delegation of Fridays for Future -- Greta’s own youth movement, which has become a global phenomenon -- stormed the stage. Representatives of Fridays for Future admitted that they knew what they were doing was against the rules, and they were ready to face the consequences: having their admission badges taken away (being “debadged”), and not being blacklisted from future UNFCCC events.

Neither of these things happened. Instead, UNFCCC praised the young activists, and let them keep their badges.

A few hours later, another activist group in attendance -- not an Indigenous one, a point that was raised by a young Native American man during the Fridays for Future press conference -- staged a sit-in outside the main hall where a large plenary meeting was scheduled. Said meeting was full of gimmicks, including a live call to the International Space Station so an astronaut could talk about the view of climate change from space.

I was going to attend the plenary. I joined the protest instead.

Admittedly, the decision was partly made for me by security. After pushing, shoving, and jostling the (mostly adult, heavily Indigenous, mostly PoC, heavily female, heavily Queer) protesters, as well as violently snatching their badges off their lanyards, security started herding them -- as well as anyone in proximity -- out into the open docking area outside the hall. One woman nearby, who hadn’t meant to join the protest and who had just been filming, tried to duck out of the group and got sternly told by a security guard “No. Keep going forward. No turning back.” A similar thing had happened to me -- I hadn’t made up my mind about joining the protest, because I didn’t have all the information -- but security made the decision, and in the end, I’ll always prefer to be with the people facing the police rather than those they’re protecting.

It was... furious. It was emotional. The leaders of the protest had us form a circle and turn our backs on security and the door. WoC -- many of whom were Indigenous -- led not just standard protest chants, but songs. Renewal songs, fight songs. The common theme was the intersection of environmental justice and femininity, queerness and suffering under colonization, anti-capitalism, anti-exploitation, and a call for colonizers to repay the colonized for all of the loss and damage already caused by climate change (climate reparations).

Eventually, UNFCCC made a decision. They decided to close the door on us. Security “escorted” us to the docking bay entrance, and the military police took over. Fortunately, none of them started anything. Obviously, none of the protesters did either. We made it back to the venue entrance eventually, but only those with journalist/media badges were allowed back in; the rest of us were not. Even people with Observer badges (like mine) who hadn’t been part of the protest weren’t being allowed in. But some people who were panelists, delegates, etc. came out to stand in solidarity with us.

Once it became clear that no more joint actions would be taking place, I went home, and waited to see whether the negotiators would be able to talk UNFCCC into letting us back in.

They did. Can you imagine the headlines? “UNFCCC Kicks Out Protesters, Bars Civil Society Observers From Climate Talks.”

Talk about going down like a lead balloon.

Which is about what the conference in general did. I was able to go back and get some more stuff out of it... including another big protest, this time led by Fridays for Future and sanctioned. It was so, so good. Many of the people from Wednesdays protest were also there, and while spirits weren’t exactly high, the emotions being expressed were more along the lines of determination and tenacity than fire and fury. Both are valid, and both have their place, and it was nice to have a balance -- especially at the end of the week, when we were all flat-out exhausted.

The Aftermath

And then I just didn’t stop moving. Saturday and Sunday I spent exploring Madrid and staying out late, Monday I flew back to Geneva from Madrid (because absolutely fuck Spanish busses and also absolutely FUCK FRANCE’s weeks-long general strike that I’m sure was for something very important. I’m sure. Because France never strikes over trivial things).

Tuesday-Friday was a takehome exam that I swear to god was more labor-intensive than my actual undergrad thesis, and Saturday-Sunday I flew to London to visit my sister at her new job as an actor in Shrek’s Adventure. Mom was supposed to go with me, but she has a slipped disk and sent me up alone. Which was nice -- my sister and I almost never hang out just the two of us. But that’s another thing I’ve been dealing with -- quite a bit of extra Stuff To Do that Mom Can’t Do because Back Hurty and there have been days when she literally could not move.

But now I am here! I still have work to do, and it’s holidays so there’s Holiday Stuff happening, but I’m hoping to get back to writing here in the next few days.

Atop a stool you sat pouting with arms crossed resting on the counter before you across from the equally as moody teen Thorin who couldn’t help but smirk as you mumbled, “I hate Mondays.” In a resilient funk all day as it was the one day your father would have his shift as volunteer fireman baring you from his side all day and well into the next after noon.

Lowly Thorin would glance at his Sister, your usual babysitter still trying to get Fili into his footie pajamas while his body went limp at his irritation for being woken, then to you again rumbling in his sketching his next statue idea. “Obviously, Garfield.”

Deeper his smirk etched into his face at your narrowed gaze and grumble back, “Silence, Pookie.”

Instantly his brow inched up and he lowered his pencil on its side saying, “His sidekick is Odie.”

You sharply fired back, “You’re not my sidekick.” Poking your tongue out at him, only for his Grandmother to enter with a bowl of peas she asked you to help her cut and peel them for lunch and dinner.

Shooting up in bed Thorin inhaled deeply staring at his hands rested on his lap he eyed the scar from the rose in his lapel from his taking you to the Alice in Wonderland show he regretted not thinking to keep in his jacket even with its stabbing him so he could have pressed it to have more than just a torn ticket stub. Exhaling slowly he thought back to those bright lilac eyes just a sliver past silver and those moody streaks to rival his own.

Sure you had a stubborn streak and with deep bright purple eyes to boot, but it couldn’t be you. Big Joe was broken when he lost you, how could he break so deeply without having heard of losing you in the war he was called off into right after, no, it couldn’t be you. A coincidence, slip of the tongue bringing out that nickname for him you had stumbled across by chance just to irritate him, none the wiser to how deeply that name had hurt him reminding him of his loss. Laying back again he sighed turning his head to your gift wondering why you had chosen to give him a Cheshire Cat. Closing his eyes he rolled onto his stomach grumbling into it, “Just a coincidence.” Lost in his wandering thoughts as to how he could repay you for the unexplained yet masterful gift.

A long day of family festivities was set to begin soon and again in the dark you had been hard at work in your garden. A set of sunken supporting grooves in the raised layered stone platform were filled with the bases of your wrought iron gazebo. Under a supporting metal frame for a painter’s platform you gripped a chain tossed over it you tugged on lifting the heavy mural filled walls. Carefully you would lift them and ease them down into their grooves. One by one you would settle them all into place then raise the raised ring for the dome roof, in the distance Dwarves looked on squinting in the darkness catching only a glimmer reflecting off the small slips of blood from your pinched fingers on the chain.

In silence they watched as you secured the chain in place, the arched pieces hanging down from the ring you lifted into the correct height. Once at the right level you stood atop a step ladder you gripped the sections you would ease apart on the expanding ring that at your raising the dome piece into the right height you welded the base where it sat then shifted onto the next piece you raised afterwards. Section after section was raised while the crowd grew in their way to the opening town breakfast for all the clans until you welded the meeting frames stretching up the dome securing the structure freeing you to mentally tug the chain off you floated down to the ground beside the gazebo. Stepping off the ladder you adjusted a few small pieces then climbed down and back up again with a pack on your waist filled with the colored glass pieces for the roof. Mainly clear for the larger pieces with colored rings in diamonds layered around the base etched with sacred runes leading into the stories formed below all finished at the first glimpse of sunlight.

Lost in the moment you stepped out of the gazebo and sat by your cart waiting as the crowds did. A single glimmer of golden light and the few scattered seeds, bulbs and trees blooming already were lit up in a magnificent wave of colors. Open mouthed all looked on while the breeze caused the spinning pieces to twirl casting their lights on other key locations in the garden stirring rainbows off the fountains finally filled enough from your tap from the pipes fed from the center circle filled by the distant river tap now shut off. Thorin especially had lost all argument against your work, relenting to the truth before him, even half finished It was just one layer on a grander masterpiece.

From morning to night you drew from the pile of stones in varied shades of grey. One by one giving a whole knew meaning to tedious you held your place wearing through your kneepads in laying them in a spiraled pattern of continuous waves following the pathway that grew both thinner and thicker around various turns and the planters and fountains around them. Miles of stones later and you had reached the end of your stones and the end of the giant circular patch of land the garden formed from above only fully appreciated from the roof of your family castle as to what it all grew into. Darkly a shadow in your deepening the groove at the end of the path you brought the final set of black stones to settle inside a shadow fell in your view and with a crack from your neck you looked up.

With a visible flash of concern on his face Thorin looked you over as you sat back on your legs seeing him in a Durin blue shirt tucked into his jeans. Unable to head home after seeing the Blacklock clan section bare at the town dinner without having said anything to you at all surely securing him terrible luck for a year if he didn’t handle the task by midnight, he said, “Have you been out here all day?”

“Don’t worry, I know the rules, I skipped the radio today so I wouldn’t disturb your festivities.”

“Why do you always act as if you know everything of our culture?”

Nodding to yourself you stand saying, “Careful, leaving an argument for your final act of the night will spoil a year for you.” A loud pop sounded from your back in your arch of it while you took a step towards your rental off in the distance.

“You should have come by. Whole town showed up, if you are part of the clan you should have held your place. My Gran made her special Rhubarb Surprise special for our new guests this year.”

With a sigh you replied continuing to move on feeling your stomach clench in a warning at its oncoming growl, “It takes three members of the clan to hold the table respectfully. You know that.”

Rolling his eyes in your continued pace he took a step saying, “Still, no use in spending the day alone slaving over this land over sharing a good meal.”

In thick Dwarvish you responded, “The town called for Shuktu, town has spoken. If you object take it up with them.”

Open mouthed he stared at your back then hurried a few steps saying, “Let me drive you.”

Shaking your head you replied, “That would fall against Skuktu laws. Thank you though.”

“Your gift.” Hurrying forward he reached your side stating plainly in locking his eyes with yours taking in your soft glow in the rising moonlight parting his lips, “It’s seated on my dresser.” In a curious nod you turned as he walked around you mentally screaming at himself at the pitiful try at a thank you.

Giggling to yourself you continued walking and called back, “Night Pookie. Glad you enjoyed it. Gonna go throw myself against a rock now.” You added reaching back to help pop your back in another forced arch feeling his eyes on you while you continued on.

Lost in his hating his pitiful try at a thank you and the clear knowledge of clan laws and Khuzdul you seemed to be fluent in his heart began to pound realizing now he would have to repeat that you in fact understood the towns ruling on Shuktu. As well as accepted the portents clearly pointing to a year alone for you as you were not able to stand up with your claimed clan, even if you were mistaken on your lineage today was a time for coming together with your neighbor.

By his guess he was the first and most likely only one to speak to you all day, no more hospitable than an old badger surely worsening your fated weight in being shunned by all but the moody Dwarf. It was going to be six months you would be forced into sharing paths until you either renewed your lease or moved on to wherever you had chosen to go. Both choices painful though so far he was altogether against your leaving until he had solved the mystery of your past.

A long night’s rest after a warm shower bled into the next afternoon while rain fell outside. Too sore to bother you sat on a stool in the kitchen peeling peas you then rinsed and boiled to add to your vegetable sides to go with your shepards pie, through the backing of which you sat on the back patio eyeing a passing group of does and their fawns you waved to in their passing in search of food. Fully fed and exhausted you cleaned and locked up returning to your closet settling in for the night.

All day you spent in the closet clinging to the ground until the stiffness of your back eased with your stretches you forced yourself through. No matter how foolish or painful it was at least the agony you forced your battered body through it muddled the pain and humiliation you felt from your old life.

An odd solace came from the shunning as in these unspeakably painful first weeks home in the absence of your father you didn’t have to share with anyone why you wanted to be alone. You didn’t have to say his name or mention what he did or why you had been so lax in leaving him sooner. Honestly you didn’t know yourself, past not wanting another failed relationship or giving your cousin the satisfaction of having him fully, but none of that mattered now, her game was through and no doubt she’d have dropped him by now and was waiting for you to choose again to begin the game anew. So silently you waited until the wailing of your broken heart would cease and you could maybe consider looking at anyone past your hired crews for conversation.

Thorin might be an ass but at least there was no game there, no lies, he honestly believed you a liar, and deep down you knew him to be true, you were lying. All you wanted was to hide away and never see another person again, you wanted to tear down every stone in this town and raze the earth left standing in hopes of saying your excruciating rage at all you had endured. Most of all you held onto the worst lie of all, a belief that you really can go home again, when quite obviously for you the proof was in the pudding.

All at once your eyes shot open and you groaned climbing off the floor to stagger your way to the kitchen at the timer sounding for you to pull your molten cake out of the oven. A large scoop of orange and vanilla ice cream later made you smirk as you eyed your dream breakfast from childhood. Teasingly you called out your breakfast choice through the house only to smirk wider in easing into the floor in front of the tv with a towel over your lap under the coffee table with fork in hand knowing no adult was around to stop you.

A ring of the bell made you groan however and you called out unable to get up, “It’s open!”

A chuckle sounded and you could hear Balin calling out, “It’s Balin, I’ve come to change your filters.”

“In the living room.” A smirk eased across his lips in seeing your meal and you pointed your fork at him, “There’s a spare cake in it for you if you don’t tell on me.”

He chuckled and held out a dish of his own, “Our gran sent me with this,”

You nodded, “Rhubarb Surprise?” He nodded, “Thank you.” He nodded and went to put it in the fridge for you, “I would get up but my feet are plotting against me. I don’t want to give them the satisfaction.”

He chuckled again, “No worries. You did quite a job yesterday. Excellent designs. Quite a number of us have stolen closer looks.”

“Thank you.”

“You rest up and I won’t be long.”

Barely ten minutes later he returned after curiously inspecting each open bedroom wondering where you had been sleeping at the untouched sheets and pillow arrangement they had set up for you before you had moved in. “Time for cake?”

“Unfortunately I do have to go.”

You nodded and seeing his remorseful expression you said, “I’ve put them in dishes already if you want to grab one to go.”

He grinned at you and went to fetch one and returned wetting his lips in a pausing moment, “Jaqiearae?” He asked timidly testing your response to the name he assumed you to belong to after the lease had only been signed to a series of Vanyar Runes they couldn’t read.

“Hmm?” In peering up at him his eyes softened in fully relaxing into your identity.

“Welcome home.” A grin eased across your lips and you nodded, “Even if it hasn’t been much of a welcome. It will pass.”

With a giggle you replied raising your filled spoon, “I know. I have to ask, why would it be impossible for me to be me?”

Balin sighed and wet his lips shifting his weight on his feet keeping a good hold on your dish, “When you left Big Joe broke. He refused to talk about you. We all took that as you had passed.”

You nodded and couldn’t help but giggle again, “That would do it.” In glancing at the dish you extended a finger, “Fair warning, it’s got honey in it. I fully expect him to storm over if he finds out.”

Balin chuckled and nodded, “Thank you. I will try to keep him from finding out.”

You waved your hand, “Ah, if he does I can tie him down and force feed him some. Grumpy goat.” Balin chuckled and made his exit thanking you again and wishing you a good relaxing day.

Lounging in the house for as long as you could muster your strength returned and with a series of stretches and a halfhearted try at repeating the poses from your one and only yoga class you were just agitated enough to head back out to the garden again. Nearing sunset you waded through the crowd of bear cubs while their fathers helped you to pull the carts and wagons of seeds and bulbs they hoped to help sweeten the honey your eager bees floated behind you to inspect themselves. In the peaceful cloud of buzzing and grunting from your playful band of bears you went from planter to planter settling each in their new homes from noon all till sundown.

More and more crowds grew and milled by your garden staring from the street hoping to see what you were doing. Happily the bees collected pollen from the buds on the fruit trees above you and the sloped covers coated in tiles resembling hives making the bees feel even more at home here. Tiny buds and stalks split through the earth at your gentle hums and barely audible Elven tunes lulling them to glow and grow in the dying light. Lastly your floating trays were added to the water filled raised planters you added special rare breeds of flowers with lilies and floating fauna into the center circle. Under which you added the starlight fish breeds into the water from the nets your bears had helped you fill from farther downstream to help keep the water clean and help keep the plants healthy. Meaning that the garden could now be dubbed as complete, with just the wait for all the plants to bloom fully in time.

The easy day bled back into a night of finalizing the last of the decorative stained windows in the castle meaning it was now mostly airtight, minus the insulation you had yet to add and the giant wall of windows for the ballroom and dining hall. Back to the shop again you went and continued to slave away on those hoping that once you could finish this it would be possible to start building a sealed area for you to stay in. It would hurt to live in the castle alone but at least it was yours, a promise your kin would return to fill it one day once the proper respect and traditions in burying your elder had been met.

A call a few days out tore your from the castle when you had finished sealing the dining hall. In a hurry you grabbed your keys and raced to your rental to change and fetch a bag from Turo’s house. Your cousin’s friend had asked you to fetch his eldest son’s bag for a summer basketball league out in a rival team’s school field. With a grin after the drive you hurried through the crowds feeling the shift of your t shirt over your middle daring to flash a glimpse of the tattoos on your hips and lower back to the Dwarves around you looking you over. Neither side certain of who you were or why you were here but straight to the assigned hall you went and gave the coaches’ lounge door a knock.

Lifting their gazes all ten coaches from the tournament looked up taking in every detail on you until you eyed the proper coach with bag raised stating the name of the teen you had brought the bag for. Relieved he stood and hurried to pass on the bag that was noticed as mistaken for another on the frantic rush to make it to the team bus the night prior. Quietly you slipped away and milled through the crowds up to the stands for the team ignoring the whispers and stares from the towns people curious of why you had shown to this and not the dinner.

The Durins especially taking special interest in you while Thorin’s head tilted slightly at the bottom of a paw print he couldn’t make out in the distance when you had leaned forward to fix the hem of your jeans over your boots shifting your shirt upwards for a moment. All around you your heart raced and you pulled up your emotional wall hearing the same whispers you always had. Teens and students from other school pointing you out especially as the ‘ugly woman’ who had brought something for Toby, who was now blushing madly in his irritated huff that he barely knew you.

You were never really the most appealing of Elves, shorter and curvier with a personality stunning many from even trying to woo you. But here to the Dwarves it all came flooding back, to the vast majority who stuck to Dwarvish partners you were downright ugly. Avoiding the tears you waited until the first quarter was over and you stood trading your spot with Turo’s parents and younger sisters faking some time sensitive excuse to leave nearly urging your grumpy goat of a Dwarf after you. In your drive home his brows sunk into deep glares at the visiting teens who dared insult you, joined by Balin who even managed to trip one in the hall after his final match drawing an apology from the teen believing it was his misstep in Balin’s dark glare.

All the way home you wondered to yourself just who the people in town would each prefer. Thorin especially being baffling as you’d caught whispers he was quite content being a bachelor. Though Dwalin and Frerin had both chosen Hobbits, not far in appearance to you past their feet while Kili had chosen an Elf, far from their mother’s choice one of the best examples of Dwarven men around, big and sturdy with dazzling eyes able to exude allure and fear in a focused gaze of the blonde bombshell. Fili took right after him though his rumored dating life you had learned from your cousins was a jumble, with humans, Elves and Hobbits alike.

Home again you burrowed into the job of securing the final windows in the castle. Another week was all it took and finally you could start to leave notes on each room as to what changes were being made. A full electrical and plumbing overhaul were to be done, New fixtures had arrived and waited in the garage and early Monday morning the crews returned easing the Durins’ worries that you wouldn’t be alone anymore. More and more they had grown worried once it was confirmed that you had known what the town had meant with those signs.

A full week was all it took to swap out all the plumbing, starting with all the water pipes, the decided greater first choice to begin with. Toilets, showers and sinks were next and fully swapped within the next week complete with the tiles, counters and cabinets swapped in partial room overhalls to save time later. Bathrooms and kitchens were partially covered and in the next week you helped to swap out the lighting fixtures and locations of more than a few wall sockets. A few dimmers and various other switch effects were swapped out for their originals now more useful.

Tirelessly the team worked with and around you, grateful of your nights of finishing the grout in the tile jobs in the bathrooms, laundry and kitchen after their day long bout of spraying insulation meaning they could begins the drywall when they arrived in the morning since the inspectors were all more than pleased at your efforts to restore your kin’s home.

With a stretch of solar panels added to the corners of the most sunlit areas new storm shutters were next. Fully secured to match the thick layer of mithril in the walls and outer doors matching those of the castles all through these lands you were fully fortified and just in time for the biggest heat wave of the year. Nice and cool the castle sat halfway completed inside and nearly empty waiting for your next step in the baking sun just barely an hour after it had risen.

Slamming hard into the earth your shovel worked the ground in the greenhouse under the formerly paved portions into more even levels. One by one you reset the heavy stone slabs across the paths between your previously tilled patches of earth already sprouting tiny buds from your agonizing night you drained yourself to the point of having to head back to your rental to eat a heaping meal before heading back for an early start you hoped to fare better in. Even mentally shifting the tiles that settled into their former places you were still wearing thin in the growing heat. Your forge was one thing but this was completely different, hard to manage even with the pitiful breeze blowing over you.

With a deep sigh you eyed the green scum filled pool in the center used to fuel the sprinkler system for your plants before you looked to the bag waiting beside it. Heavily you let the shovel fall to the ground and you moved to the rim of the pool on which you sat removing your boots, glad you had chosen your shorts today. Yanking your sweat coated shirt off you dropped it onto the pile and pulled out the goggles and breather you clipped to your waist, adding the mouthpiece to the roof of your mouth for a testing inhale. Easing back you shuddered in the cool water the bears had been lounging in and with brush in hand you tried to keep from grimacing at the sludge coated walls and floor and swam closer to begin scraping it free.

Halfway across town aimlessly in a stop to pick up a batch of super glue for a prank for their cousins Fili and Kili strolled into the hardware store right in the middle of a brewing storm. Straight into the middle of a flurry of shouts the usual delivery man straight out refused to take your order of tools to you. Insisting the crew members willing to work with you could take them instead on their next day out.

With a roll of is eyes the owner’s grandfather, who had caught a few hints from you even at a distance ended their argument with his laughter making them both turn and ask, “What is so funny?”

He shook his head saying, “Just picturing Jaque Blacklock’s reaction when he hears the town has shunned his granddaughter.”

Open mouthed in his stroll away before the delivery man could accept it Fili and Kili grabbed the bags calling out, “We’ll take them!” Rushing out the door they hurried to their waiting truck eager to see just what they could find out about your ties to the Blacklock clan.

Curiously in the drive up to your castle they peered around wondering where you could be, the sound of music through their rolled down windows lured them to your greenhouse.

Parking outside they climbed out of the truck Fili shut off, the doors closed and with heavy bags tucked in their arm they both strolled through the windowless structure towards the playing radio. Through the front walkway into the endless building the brothers eyed the bears grunting and sniffing out at them in their easing in and out of the pool by which your pile of boots and shirt brought them closer.

Nearing the pool handfuls of sludge were being drawn out of the pool by the now spinning water wheel attached to the pump system in the bottom you had cleared out and started up again. Chuckling to themselves in the third testing hiss the sprinklers gave a murky tan spray of water down in rippling waves through the greenhouse from the sprinkler heads from high above their heads helping to cool them a bit in the sticky heat. A bear from below the water rose up after dunking down to alert you to the guests and when their eyed lowered again they saw you swimming across the pool to the edge near them.

I'm praying from the pulpit

That put the last nail in the coffin

Above the water your hand broke the surface to raise your goggles as your tongue worked the mouthpiece free from the roof of your mouth you dangled from its chord around your ear. “Hi. Escaping the heat?”

Kili chuckled raising his bag, “Brought your tools.”

With a nod you set your brush down out of the pool and planted your hands on the edge, “Ah.” Lifting up to a single foot, stepping over it to reach for the bag he offered you. Peering inside it you strolled across the floor to the table after accepting the second, “Thank you. Didn’t realize you worked there.”

Over your back the pair eyed the trails of paw prints stemming from the back of your hips up your spine in mirrored spirals up to the base of your neck where Ursa Major glowed inside the figure of a large bear under Ursa Minor, a small cub standing for you and your father. The paw prints matching those on your wrist, all marking you as a member of the Blacklock clan with your father’s runes etched into your right shoulder blade. The image was subtly captured by the brothers on their phones they pocketed as Kili answered, “We don’t. Just wanted to come and check on you.”

Fili nodded and caught your raised brow when you turned around, trying his best not to ogle your toned figure as well as the swirl of pink musical notes on a warped set of lyrics across your right ribs in a barely visible pink shade they wondered what song it could be. With only a trio of runes they could recognize under your bra strap ‘Very Good Advice’.

“Oh really?” Looking the pair over you couldn’t help but smirk saying, “Why would I need checking on?”

Kili shrugged and Fili answered, “Well, only uncles Thorin and Balin have come to see you and they’re not the most lively of company.”

“Well I would highly doubt they would appreciate me keeping you very long. Not with the ban on me.”

Instantly they inhaled deeply and Kili shook his head, “No one’s really banned you. That’s for outsiders. Everyone’s just a bit slow on catching the resemblance.”

With a smirk you nodded again, “Still, I’ve got to finish this pool and you should get out of this heat.”

Both feeling the effects of it they nodded and Fili blurted out, “But we’ll be back tomorrow, should be cooler, we could bring a lunch.” Reaching out he offered you his phone, “For your number, please.”

Chuckling weakly you nodded and punched the number in under the name of the only child of Big Joe they knew of, making you smirk as you watched him turn off the display and pocket his phone. Kili grinned saying, “Sorry it took so long to drop by JaqJaq.”

Fili, “We’ll bring a picnic tomorrow, like we used to have over by the river.”

“Sounds like fun. Drive safe boys.”

They both chuckled and watched you add your mouthpiece again sitting on the edge of the pool you lowered your legs into, “Swim safe.” Giggling to yourself you lowered your goggles and dropped into the water to get back to your scrubbing while you still had the light, hearing their rushing steps once you had dipped under the surface again. Hours of sputtering sprinklers and scrubbing later the pool was shining and the water pump was in working order with clean water washing down on the plants to the timer you had set.

“You’re going to feel like such an ass when you remember me.” The words echoed in Thorin’s mind as his heart skipped and the world muffled around him, slipping out of the room of the castle while the Durin clan all clambered for detail after detail his eyes lowered to the picture Fili had sent to him at his request while he sat on the back steps in the moonlight. Warmly a tear rolled down his cheek in muttering to himself, “Garfield.”

When the Navy found out I smoked marijuana, I was at a firing range. I had an M-4 and an M-9, one being an automatic rifle, the other a pistol.

They disarmed me immediately, and I remember knowing why they did.

In the twenty seconds it took me to walk over to the disarming barrel, my thoughts were, “Pull the pistol out, put the barrel in your mouth and pull the trigger” for as many times I could mentally repeat before I lost the opportunity. I called my dad while a Chief was on his way to pick me up.

After the phone call, I deleted all of my Facebook messages at the recommendation of my father.

All of my text messages. too. My dad swore the Chief wasn’t my friend, and would screw me over at his first chance and not to tell him anything, at all.

The deleted threads of conversations with people who either didn’t exist anymore, or we had stopped talking.

I must have chain smoked about fifteen cigarettes in the hour and a half it took for this Chief to arrive.

All the while, I had been wishing that I had the courage to just pull that fucking trigger.

That anxiety was unbearable.

I went to a DRB, which is where I stand in front of a bunch of senior enlisted military.

At first, I came in with my shoulders back , military discipline and all. At the end, I was escorted out by a compassionate Master Chief, and I was bawling.

I have wanted to kill myself for as far back as I can remember. I smoked weed because all of my pain in life is unbearable and my mind never shuts the fuck up.

I don’t understand reality the way everyone seems to and it’s isolating, like being in the dimension next door.

"Most everyone who doesn’t know me resents me. Most everyone who knows me tolerates me," I tell myself.

I sat outside and cried, blubbering to these senior enlisted folks.

As a Second Class Petty Officer with all of the skills that I had possessed. I was in the United States Navy for five long years, and nine excruciating months and two awkward days.

I had been to mental health multiple times in my Naval career. The first psychiatrist that I ever spoke to was at NATTC Pensacola.

It’s not even six months of me getting out of the Navy now...

My present life finds me in this bed at some house in South Carolina, Like a muscle, those words stream across my mind like a teleprompter, “You should have died on that day. You should have fucking killed yourself.”

And for myself, I finally gave myself the courage to tell myself, “No.” "I love you for just who you are. I love the way you think, I love the way you handle thing[s] (most of the time ^.^), I love what you do. You have a very solid and strong mind, you think things through very thoroughly, and you have a very good outward perspective. I don't know if that helps, but that's the best I can come up with while working." Let me tell you what I think happened before I tell you why I think we should reconnect. I'm 26 years old and the one and only thing in my life that I regret, to this day, is what I once said simply to hurt you. I was an awful boyfriend for you. Not all of the time, obviously. But my only regret comes from when I said out of annoyance and irresponsibility, 'I guess you're going to have to celebrate Thanksgiving without your boyfriend or your mom.." You eyes glazed over me. You slumped over. And you sobbed. I walked towards you and hugged you because that sort of rage-to-regret is exactly the kind of Bipolar Disorder that I am used to. It's been my entire life, Nicole. It's all I have ever known. Albeit, the worst of it all is over and I'm just waiting for all of my hopes and dreams to bloom into the flowers I have been cultivating. The night we went to Twin Peaks was the night you said goodbye, even though you never did. You and I both are aware that we would come across each other someday, I think. I don't have any proof for that delusion/hope, but hey, I don't know everything which means I have unfettered access to being totally wrong and totally right, until one of us is deceased. I do remember being in absolute bliss that night we met up and you were drunk with me in the Whataburger drive through and that's about all I have for that. Mike and I moved out of the house because we wouldn't be able to renew the lease before I had to get my new job in the Navy. I moved into an apartment on the second floor and I got a dog named Itachi. I did loads of LSD that I'd gotten and I had a REALLY FUCKING AWFUL TRIP with Hailey Campbell (also tripping) and Rian Nobles (not tripping). I went to my grandmother's funeral in New York with my Dad and Alex. I found out that my photographic memory is real because I reminded my Uncle about the fit my brother went into at the LAST funeral we gathered. Which was Renee's. I lived with Lauren Teston for a long time after that. I started smoking weed because, Nicole, I didn't know what to do.. Everyone has always left me, and I only NOW understand why: me. But I didnt see it like that. It didn't feel like that.. It didn't feel like I had an emotional problem. I didn't know. But in retrospect, Nicole, my emotions felt like a chainsaw to my insides. Our breakup was the healthiest breakup for me, and it was also the worst. (2020 readers, it got way worse) I didn't leave for California until right before October 10, 2016. I was trained to be an Engine Mechanic by the Seabees and I learned a fuck ton about cars. I did more PT than anywhere else in my military career. Every Friday was a 4:30 A.M., seven mile run with the whole school. Really, it was a fourteen mile run, but it makes me sound less of a douche if I say seven, maybe. I came home on leave for Christmas and I smoked even more weed. I came back to California to finish my school. Byy the way, there were two onomatopoeia's in a barracks room together: Petty Officer Quackenbush and Petty officer Miao (this or 'mao' is also the Chinese word for cat") I left Port Hueneme after meeting Johnny Depp in L.A. I drove, for the third time, across the country. I was at Gulfport, Mississippi for a few months, learning combat procedures with the Seabees. I pissed hot in Gulfport. I wrote a poem that I'll attach later about what that was like. I went to some military proceedings, reduced in rank, lost a lot of money, had to go to two different hospitals for one month. I first went to Garden Park Hospital for a suicide watch that I had been placed under after the military proceedings had broken me down to where I couldn't take it anymore. I bawled my eyes out to men I'd never met because I could no longer believe that people didn't care about me. I was suicidal given the circumstances, but I was suicidal before I ever got caught smoking. The only reason I smoked was because I didn't want to be suicidal. A 51 year old woman tells me at this place that she, "Would be surprised if I never heard of you again. I stayed at Emerald Coast Behavioral Health (This is when I called you in 2017) and I learned an entirely different way of living. I was told that I have Bipolar Disorder I, Major Depressive Disorder, Anxiety, Osteochrondroma in the left knee. I was told a handful of tools to help myself become a better person. I then went to restriction, which is where a person is constantly monitoring me while I do nothing but work and survive. I did that for forty five days which dragged forever. I left. I stayed with my dad and I had a good first month out of the Navy. I was happy. I was excited and nervous and terrified. I smoked SO much more weed. I drank SO much more booze. And cigarettes. I was helping my dad build a deck in the backyard. My car was repossessed about one and one half months after getting out. I had nothing. I started working under the table as a contractor for a few months, but my mom and I got into a fight and I was kicked out of the house for the second and last time of my life. I moved in and slept on a friends floor. He had a bum knee from a recent surgery and so I quasi-morphed into his at-home nurse. Started doing dabs and malt liquor with friends. Eating popcorn for food, drawing outside for five hours, drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes. I did this for a month until my depression (booze) had become evil. I tried hanging myself on a dog line and I had to leave their house.. I stayed with my dude Sam for a few days and then moved in with my brother for a day. I feel nothing for him anymore, and so I really dont want to elaborate about this because he will always be a peace of shit. I went to a music festival that got shutdown by a hurricane. I got to do LSD/blow/weed for free because I was working security and I have worked with the team before. Hell, the guy in charge personally handed me $275 because of how badass of a watchstander I am. I then migrated to Asheville, North Carolina where my eyes were opened to the world we live in. And how great a thing love is, Nicole Renee Gable. But after this, I really had nowhere to go. That is until I remembered that I knew a guy from when I was in Japan.. We only ever really interacted in the smokepits. After he found out I had been sleeping on the floor of my friends house, he told me that if I was ever in South Carolina that he had a guest bedroom waiting for me. I lived with him and his wife and their son while I got a job as a forklift driver at BMW. I got another car (since been repossessed, not as debilitating for me now). I moved out and lived with a dude that I thought was a friend. He ended up being a real twat of a motherfucker. Before I knew he was a real dullard, I left BMW about two weeks of me living with him. It was too military.A HUGE millitary-industrial complex. He fucked me over so that I had nowhere to go and I didnt have a job. He left. I had the apartment by myself. It was a blur of events past that. Between the weed, the booze and the mental health issues, I am grateful to be writing this. This guy's stripper girlfriend (Her name is Sam and she's nice as well as bananas) came to find me in a fucked up mess of my own doing at the apartment. After I came to, she and I decided that I needed to check myself into a mental health center. With no insurance. I had only a few boxes of stuff (I drove down to Florida at one point to get my shit). After I was in for a week (I know what I'm about and the solutions I need), I got a job working as a cook in a strip club. The BEST job I ever had because I actually made some good money. (30 girls dancing in one night with $5 tips to me is a lot of moolah) However, I didnt make enough money to stay. I only made enough money to leave. I bought two edibles and had a nice relaxing eight hour drive to a friend's house in Pennsacola We had a personal falling out/disagreement. I worked as a line cook at Slimz at the Al Fresco in Pensacola. I saved up money to come out to California. I'm with one of my few best friends, Tymothy. Upon my arrival here, my car was repossessed (I bought in South Carolina, which is fucking crazy that they found me). My life is coming together though, Nicole. I am generally happy in my day to day lifestyle. I'm hoping to be officially retired from working for the rest of my life within this next year. It turns out that there was A HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE scandal in the Navy and I'm going to use my genius mind to collect the disability that I deserve. Monthly, that payment could land anywhere between $800-2900.. For the rest of my life. I have an amazing home loan that I will get to use once the ball has begun rolling. Nicole, I really dont think I love you as much as I should have and that bothers me. Not in a negative way, at all. It makes me feel like I need to write this email to you. Like I owe you more for what you gave me, Nicole Gable. You might not see it, Nicole. The only reason I ever went along with the mental health is so that we could have a healthy relationship together. Whatever that even fucking means as far as the definition goes. Hell, for all I know, you could be seriously dead or worse. You could be dating somebody.. 😝 I havent dated anyone quite seriously. I've been on a couple of dates here and there, but I just didn't/don't care. I hope that all of these women find someone that loves them as much as I know I can love you someday, if you could ever trust me... If you're with someone, I seriously hope they love you as much as space-time can hold matter and energy and light and dark matter. The greatest lesson I have learned since we spoke last is that we will live our lives from the shades of fear and the radiations of love. I love and accept myself now. I love myself exactly how you once loved me. I don't know where on this rock you are, but if you'd like to never have to work again, please reach out to me. I would be honored, if you would ever be willing. It's still going to be a few months, so you can think about this for awhile..? If you ever wanted to live in California with me someday, I mean. Hell, we could be roomates. You could wear chastity belts and Amish outfits all year round . I don't know anything.. I hope that this email finds you well. I hope it has given you smiles. I hope you have a blessed day. [Update] It is now the year 2020. I am. The world is the world. Hell is hell. We’re all stuck on a rock in the middle of nowhere. How do homeless people get out of being homeless?

It very much depends on the situation. There are roughly as many ways to escape homelessness as there are to end up homeless in the first place, and how one particular individual climbs out of homelessness has a lot to do with their social connections, financial situation, mental state, physical health, age, skills, and a host of other factors. Oftentimes, there are a few things that need to come together before a person can secure permanent housing for themselves. In general, though, some of the big ways that people escape homelessness include:

Assistance from family and friends. Contrary to popular belief, the vast majority of homeless people do have non-homeless family and friends who care about them, and they are one of the best resources out there for escaping homelessness. People usually resist turning to their loved ones for help in the early days of homelessness, and may hide their situation for as long as they can to avoid embarrassment. If you’re newly homeless or experiencing short-term homelessness, however, your family and friends are your best ticket out of your situation - they may be able to give you a warm, safe, clean place to crash while you try to figure things out; your friends may be able to lend you the money you need for that bus or plane ticket to go home to live at your parents’ house; friends and family may be willing to spot you the money you need for a security deposit and first/last month’s rent, so you can get into a new place without having to wait to build up your savings; they may have connections to job opportunities, and they may be willing to co-sign on a lease or loan so you can get into housing or educational opportunities. If you are homeless or in danger of becoming homeless and your loved ones aren’t aware of your situation, let them know as soon as possible, even if it’s embarrassing - people who care about you are your best resource for dealing with your situation.

Improving their employment situation. Many people in this country live paycheck-to-paycheck and have very few savings; a small blip in employment (layoff, fired, hours cut, contract not renewed, illness, injury, etc) can be all it takes to make someone homeless. Around 40-60% of homeless people have jobs, but don’t have jobs that are stable or lucrative enough to let them afford housing. For these people, the main route out of homelessness is finding a job, or finding a better, higher-paying job. Some people are able to do this quite quickly - they may have marketable skills and good experience, and ending up homeless is largely a case of bad luck. They may be able to find a good job within a few weeks of losing their old one, and get back on their feet quickly. Other people may not have many marketable skills, or they may have other factors that make make finding a job tough (employment gaps, criminal record, did not complete secondary school, etc) - and it may take more time and effort for them to find a job that lets them afford housing.

Enrolling in social welfare programs. Many people like to moan and groan about “welfare queens” and “freeloaders” accessing social programs they don’t qualify for, but the reality of the situation is that there are way, way more people avoiding social programs they are eligible for than there are people committing fraud. One quarter of Americans who qualify for food stamps (now called SNAP) do not apply; among seniors, a full 40% who qualify don’t apply. Many people of the people who end up homeless either don’t realize they can get public assistance, or they are intentionally avoiding public assistance because of personal pride or social stigma - and the way to get out of homelessness can often involve enrolling in those programs. Enrolling in disability or unemployment benefits, seeking assistance from food stamps or food banks, enrolling in back-to-work programs that provide connections, assistance and training for job searches and getting on waiting lists for affordable, low-income housing can be necessary steps for getting a person off the streets.

Addressing mental health and addiction issues. For people who experience more complex, long-term or recurring homeless, two of the big problems are generally addiction and mental health problems. These often go hand-in-hand - people who have mental health issues and don’t have access to treatment often self-medicate with street drugs, which only worsens the mental health issues, and a vicious cycle begins. Having issues with mental health or addiction can make it nearly impossible to maintain stable employment, manage money, or meet the conditions of your housing - and so escaping homelessness generally means that you need to break free from this cycle. This can be a long, difficult process. Depending on how severe your issues are, you may require inpatient psychiatric care, inpatient rehabilitation, regular sessions with a therapist or drug counsellor or both, assistance with your psychiatric medication, and placement in supported housing with staff who are properly trained to help you. Unfortunately, getting all these supports in place can be difficult, and it may take a lot of time.

Locating or waiting for affordable housing. Sometimes the solution to homelessness is also the simplest: many people who experience homelessness escape by finding new housing that costs less than the housing that they lost. For people whose homelessness is more of a temporary “blip”, this can involve simply searching online for an apartment or room for rent that fits within their budget, or finding a roommate or two to seek out an affordable lease together. For people whose needs are more complex, this may involve going on the waiting list for section 8 housing, or other forms of subsidized housing. Unfortunately, the waiting list for this kind of housing can be long - New York City is currently processing housing applications that were submitted before 2009. The wait can be years or decades, especially if you live in a large and high-cost city with a large homeless population.

Seeking assistance from a social services agency. This is what I do for a living! The network of social welfare programs, benefits, entitlements and non-profit services is confusing and difficult to navigate (often by design). For many people who experience chronic and complex homelessness, it can be too difficult to manage on their own. That is where social service agencies come in. As a case manager at one of these agencies, I know what benefits and programs are out there, I know what the requirements are, and I know what documentation my clients will need in order to enroll. I keep track of appointments and important documents, search for openings in programs, communicate with workers at other programs, and remind my clients about things they need to do. I can also provide advocacy and inside connections; if I call someone on a client’s behalf and let the person know that I am the client’s case manager at [giant social service agency], I am more likely to get a good outcome than the client is if they called by themselves - the person on the other end of the line knows that I am likely documenting the call and reporting the outcome to my supervisor, and they know that [giant social services agency] will be down their throat if they stonewall me. I can also draw on my personal connections to get the outcomes my clients need - maybe X housing unit doesn’t usually deal with clients like the one I’m serving, but if I’m buddies with one of the social workers there, sometimes I can call them directly and get them to make an exception. Getting involved with a social services agency isn’t the right fit for everyone who experiences homelessness, but it can be an essential step for many people.

When we talk about “escaping homelessness”, there are a couple of big things that we also need to keep in mind. There are two different types of homelessness (short-term and long-term), and they are two very different beasts. The 60-something man who has been sleeping on your street corner for years and screaming at pigeons is in a very different situation from the 22-year-old who is living in his car for a couple of weeks because his new job doesn’t start until next month. Both of these people are homeless, but one of them is likely to escape homelessness very quickly, with little to no outside support - the other one may never escape at all. When we talk about “homeless people”, most people’s minds jump right to those extreme, complex, long-term cases with tragic backstories, but those are exceptions, not the rule. 75-85% of homeless people are short-term homeless; they are usually homeless only once in their lifetime, and escape within a couple of weeks; the majority are homeless for less than a month. These people usually become homeless due to unexpected “blips” in their life - job loss, bout of serious illness, fleeing a bad relationship, kicked out by parents, unexpected financial expense, etc - and for them, escaping homelessness is often a matter of finding a better job and a cheaper apartment, or getting a friend to spot them the money they need for a greyhound ticket to move in with a relative for a bit. The fact that homeless is short-term does not mean that it’s not a serious problem - being homeless for any period of time can be devastating to your mental health and self-esteem, and it can put you at higher risk of developing mental health and addiction issues. Nobody should be experiencing homeless in this country - the fact that so many people end up in this situation shows that wages and cost of living are seriously misaligned, and we don’t have nearly enough social safety nets to help people who experience domestic violence, long-term illness or job loss. On the other hand, though, people who experience complex, long-term homelessness have much higher needs. Around 15-25% of the homeless population are “chronically” homeless - this means that they have a documented disability, and they have been homeless for either one consecutive year, or for a total of 12+ months in 4+ episodes of homeless in the last three years. These are people who tend to require long-term intervention and assistance by social service agencies, and whether or not they escape homelessness depends on your definition of “escape”. Some of these people will unfortunately bounce between hospitals, jails, shelters and the street for the rest of their lives. There are serious gaps in social services, and people with treatment-resistant mental illness and addiction may slip right through, over and over again. Other people may eventually find a placement in a supported housing unit, or get old enough to be placed in a nursing home. These are places where they will always be monitored and always have staff checking up on them to make sure they are taking their medication, eating regularly, and going to all their doctors’ appointments. Some clients may not want this, and may resent the intrusion into their lives and their privacy; a lot of long-term homeless clients have difficulty understanding that they aren’t able to take care of themselves with their level of functioning, and that they are in great danger living on the streets, especially as they get older. “Getting a job” and getting their own apartment independently is simply not in the cards for many of these people - whether you consider placement in a supported housing unit to be “escaping” homelessness really depends on what your goals are. Fighting homelessness is one of the causes I’m most passionate about, and it’s one that I have dedicated much of my career to so far. Hey, three weeks ago, I got into a car accident and rear ended someone in the front with suv. A tenant rejecting these demands is faced with walking away, the loss all the fit out costs, and incurring significant costs to restore the site back to a vacant shell. Power is totally in the shopping centre’s favour, and every franchisor will have horror stories along these lines.

One friend of mine, a long term jeweler, has been astonished at the demands he regularly faces near the end of the lease period, specifically around the re-vamping of his stores. He recalled one leasing executive forcing him to spend about $50,000 to redo the internal lights of a store. Five years later, the next executive demanded a return to the original!

So what’s the solution? The best answer would be to create a fairer environment with retail legislation altered to create lease periods with options, and suppress the power of the lessors to make unreasonable demands at the time of tease renewals.

Rental increases

The Government and the Australian Bureau of Statistics spend significant monies reporting the Consumer Price Index (CPI) as a way of measuring the level of inflation in Australia. As an oil industry property manager, I went through a process of changing our service station leases from fixed rental increases to CPI. The situation changes over time, and what may seem a fair increase five or 10 years into the future can be completely crazy when the time arrives.

The oil industry use to work on the lesser of CPI or 7 per cent as the increase which many land owners demanded be written into their leases. At one stage Australian inflation was running well above 7 per cent, and within a few years we had a year of -0.3 per cent. The companies who were locked into what we call a “ratchet clause” increase suffered very badly.

Our view has always been the CPI should be a major part of the measure – but not numbers like CPI + 3 per cent. The problem is obviously the compounding effect of this. CPI is acceptable but a compounding of the 3 per cent in effect causes a further rise to 19.4 per cent above the five-year CPI increase.

The changing retail mix

Over many years we have seen the destruction of the small retail fashion chains, which took up a significant amount of the specialty retail sites– the areas where the shopping centres charge their highest rentals. Brands like Roger David, Pumpkin Patch, Metalicus, Laura Ashley, Ed Harry, Herringbone and Rhodes & Beckett have all closed in recent years.

Much of the reason has been the shopping centre owner’s willingness to lease out large spaces to brands like Zara at a very low entry rent. I am keen to see a level playing field, especially in their fixed costs like rentals, and rent increases.

Flogging the food space

As this part of the business has created large vacancies, we see the replacement of this space often in food related services, and in the end – we can only eat so much! Shopping centres used to have a few café’s and coffee shops scattered around, each with about 10 tables and 30 to 40 seats. Now you see more outlets, with many of the larger coffee shops able to seat 150 customers.

We undertook a measure at one shopping centre (where we had been an expert witness in a legal case), and the number of seats available for cafés had trebled over a 10 year period. Some of the coffee shops we saw had relocated from a 30-seat café neighbouring the food court to a 100-seat café about 30 metres away. The typical Gloria Jean’s or Coffee Club is now a much bigger store than 10 years ago.

It becomes very tempting for landlords to open more food businesses despite no upturn in customer traffic. I guess this eventually affects the overall Australian health and lifestyle as we are continually tempted to eat more cake and drink more coffee.

The advent of pop ups

We have lost the sense of spaciousness in shopping centres with layouts that made it easy for customers to walk around. Progressively, this space became a new income source as landlords developed short term rentals. What probably started as a use of a general area for four weeks by a tenant selling books or gifts in the lead up to Christmas has now become permanent.

This has a couple of effects on existing tenants. These pop ups are normally placed down a wide aisle which creates a visual barrier preventing customers spotting other shops. They also create significant new competition.

I was recently in Hong Kong where the retail spaces are beautiful, and space seems to be respected. One shopping centre had a couple of pop ups in fairly fixed locations, and the existing tenants could pay for the use for a period for a special event. In one case Salvatore Ferragamo had a free paper folding class for a few days, where customers could learn how to fold up and make small gift boxes in the Ferragamo colours.

In another case a fantastic stage was set up for high-end retailer Tod’s, which had a special showing of its new products.

Pop ups can have their place but this should not be to the detriment of the long term store lessees.

Summary

Overall, the current retail laws and regulatory environment has placed the strength with the owners and lessors of shopping centres, and it seems our Government is happy to leave it that way. The franchise sector has taken a hard hit from the franchise inquiry. But we must ask how much of the plight of the retail industry is caused by the actions of the shopping centre owners. We should also question whether the ways they operate should be critically reviewed by Government and the regulators.
