ever since I read Matt's wiki page I am all for the idea of him being the group's "mom". aka stuff like,
Matt reminding Josh to take his meds (if they're in a space together and it's obvious he hasn't OR he's just woken up)
Matt being the main peacekeeper in arguments (though he kinda sucks at that...)
Matt helping Jess and/or Emily with fashion advice (aka: they force him to watch them model clothes and he gives them Gordon Ramsey type advice and they nod like they're thinking deeply about his words before trying on a new outfit)
Matt being a wingman for Chris (aka: since he and Ash are kinda close and I hc them as study-buddies, have Chris randomly show up then Matt is like "baww shit, gotta brb to the bathroom, don't have too much fun without me!!!" and now Ash and Chris are forced to interact, which they're both fine with they're just rlly awkward)
Matt helping Mike practice his speeches when he goes to college and/or when he was still in HS preparing for his class president shit (Mike is like "ok how about this: I think that this school should have an annual bikini day--" and Matt is like "Mike, what the fuck, no???")
Matt patching up Sam if she trips while she's hiking (even if it's a small scrape, Matt has a spidey-sense for this kinda shit, and he goes hiking with Sam occasionally because I HATE that they didn't interact in game and I said so)
Matt helping Hannah study for tests (spoiler alert: they're both fucking stupid so Ash ends up coming over too)
Matt being the "supervisor" for girl's nights because he's typically invited for some odd reason (Jess loves him, Emily likes watching him freak out over girly stuff, Beth doesn't go because she doesn't want to, Ash and Sam are having a good time and honestly everyone knows that Matt is a safe guy. also Hannah likes painting his nails, but Josh usually crashes it anyways because he wants his nails painted so get the fuck out of his way)
and finally, Beth being the "dad" of the group and both her and Matt ranting to each other about how weird their friends are

what are all your fav ships from any fandom, canon or not canon dont gotta answer if you dont want to
Ooh, I'm I've been thinking of this. Anyway, I have so many ships so I'm gonna mainly focus on Until Dawn since it's been on my mind lately. For my favorite ships, it's easily gotta be Chris x Ash, Josh x Sam, Matt x Emily, and Mike x Jessica.
These are the main ships I love. I also really like Climbing Class, Jess x Sam, and Jess x Emily

An Until Dawn furry au that I’ve been playing with. Originally it was gonna be an aesthetic au with little canon plot deviancy, but it ended up going wildly off track and having it’s own plot because Wolfie can actually talk to Mike, and so he gets context much earlier in the game
Also a loose height chart with a general idea of how tall everyone is compared to each other

ok, so maybe you had a habit for getting ahead of yourself. but this time it wasn't your fault.
before you started dating two of your best friends, sam giddings and mike munroe, you were crushing on them for a while. like, eighth grade a while. but in your eyes it was impossible not to like them. despite looking like the stereotypical jocks on the soccer and football teams, they were incredibly charming and always made sure to treat you like the most precious thing in the world.
most of the time it nearly made you burst at the seams, until josh let you know that most of the group saw you as one of the babies like his sisters. you probably cried into your pillow for three hours that night.
so for the next few years you kept your feelings to yourself. you watched as both of them dated other people (you didnt talk to emily for a week when she started dating mike, but you let it go when they broke up after two months), and eventually they started going out with each other. you were happy for them.
kind of.
but annoyingly luckily for you, everything changed at the end of your junior year. most of your friends at this point were seniors, and jessica had courteously invited you as her friend date to their senior prom. at first you said no because sam and mike would be there.
but then you realized that sam and mike would be there.
you may have spent a bunch of your parents money on the most beautiful dress you could find, but the looks on their faces when you walked into the prom hall were priceless.
you had expected the faces, and also the first little compliments they and the rest of your friends gave you. but what you weren't expecting was for both of them to ask you to a dance, individually taking you by the hands before dragging you on to the dance floor and giving you that weird look where you think the person is into you but you don't want to jump to conclusions because you might just be conceited.
after that night things...changed.
despite graduating that june the pair were always coming to your house. they chalked it up to "wanting to spend time with you before college," but that didn't explain sam sitting with you on your bed as you listen to a playlist she made you, her head in the crook of your neck making the hairs on your neck stand. or mike taking you out for ice cream on him, walking down the street with you so closely you can feel him bumping into your shoulder before he slowly turns and wipes away a drop a drop of ice cream that slid down your lips...
they are...so infuriating. but three could play at that game.
emily would be having a pool party at her house, and it was the perfect oppurtunity for you to not only look good but also potentially find out once and for all what the help was sam and mikes problem. you showed up and hanged out with ashley and jess for a while, your new f/c shawl covering your body.
when chris splashes you with some water and urges you to get in the pool already, you drop the shawl to the ground and step gracefully into the pool, smiling at chris' dumb little wolf whistle.
for the next few hours your mind strays from the duo and you start enjoying the moment with your friends. this might be one of the last big group hangouts before you all go up to josh's parents cabin in the mountains, something you always enjoyed.
after you had enough of the pool you headed upstairs to a guest room to dry off and change your clothes before dinner. as soon as you undid your bikini top, you heard the door open and shut in a millisecond and after turning around so quickly you thought you would pull something, and sam and mike stand in front of you like they want to ravage you.
which they were going to.
as horny as they were, they took a minute to make sure you were ok with everything that was going to happen. what they didn't expect was for you, as soon as they got a confirmation, to jump their bones and start messily removing your clothes before moving on to theirs. before coming up here they mutually decided they would tease and try to go easy on you, but you were just so pretty and so eager and you were palming at sam's boobs and mike's pants.
and that's how you ended up with your legs on mike's shoulders as he pounded into your cunt while sam sat on your face, rocking her hips back and forth like she was at a rodeo.
for those first few weeks, the sneaking around was hot. whenever your group of friends would hang out, they would act a normal amount of nice to you while giving you hidden touches and caresses before meeting up with you when everyone was gone and fucking each others brains out.
but then it started getting stale, not being able to be affectionate in public. you knew you were getting tired of it, but for now you would avoid bringing it up as your lovers seemed comfortable with the way things were going.
you were...very wrong.
it was early february and time for the yearly stay at the washington family lodge. you were fully packed and excited as you were every year, ready for a week of skiing, partying, and hanging with your friends all day.
the first day was spent srttling in, making sure the house was up in running order after months of bring unused.
(part of this was checking the boiler was working, which you despised doing because chris and josh would always try to scare you and most of the time fail.)
but things got weird on the second day.
every year without fail jess suggested never have i ever, mostly because she thought it was hilarious when everyone groaned at the middle school suggestion.
at first the game is simple. josh dares jess to do a handstand for two rounds, sam dares matt to arm wrestle with chris. hell, jess admits that she has a slight crush on matt.
and you only giggled at that because duh, of course you knew that, but then jess turns it back around on you and dares you to name who's the hottest person in the room, the cliché bitch.
now, you had two options.
1. say either of the two people half of the group had already known you’d been enamored with for a large portion of your life.
2. be a little shit and day someone else because it’s fun.
and i mean, what was the point of this trip if you didnt have a little fun?
you decided to be more jokey about it and say chris, going along with him hyping himself up as the "peak of the male form" by fake fawning over him.
emily asked you later about that "crush you had just a few years ago," and you brushed it off. its in the past.
if it didn't surprise you so much you'd almost be worried at the way mike took more sips of his beer before roughly slamming it on the floor next to him, or sam letting out a little huff and brooding for the rest of the game.
later that night, after taking a nice long bath and changing into a comfy but cute pajama set, you flopped your body on to your guest bed and brought your phone to your face to scroll through social media until you fell asleep, before the telltale dm of a "you up?" let you know that wasn't how the night was going to go.
not even five minutes later there was a knock at your door and not even five seconds after that you feel sam harshly bring her lips to yours as her hands grip your waist, backing you up into the room as mike closes the door.
its fast and rough, the way they strip you of your clothes and push you on to the bed as they bite and nip at your skin. before you can even blink sam is pushing up your shirt and palming at your breasts, pinching your nipples and taking them into her mouth.
you're about to ask where the hell the aggression came from when a gasp leaves your mouth followed by a long moan as mike pulls down your shorts and mouths at your cunt through your underwear.
you don't have any more questions when they both start sucking on different parts of your skin, leaving hickeys which they normally don't as to keep your secret. you wouldn't mind being marked up this time.
after a long and very pleasurable few hours, you laid between them with a blissful look on your face as they gently ran their hands over your skin.
after a long silence, mike suggests that maybe its time to tell your friends about the three of you.
as much as it warms your heart, it also just starts making you giggle. after the noises the three of you were making, you were sure they already knew.

every time I see people thinking chris was a part of a prank on hannah i want you scream. like ppl you are talking about the guy who right after his best best ever friend died decided he has to find and help sam. he was comforting ashley being completely destroyed, and still cared about others more than himself. it's the guy who ran in the forest to save the dude who was basically mentally torturing him and people he cares about, even knowing there are monsters out there. he says "we" when they talk about the prank because he just as josh blames himself for being unable to help, because his whole character is about HELPING people
i mean yes, he likes joking around, being funny and sometimes prank his mates, but it's out of his character to make an obviously hurtful joke on someone he cares about. he would go find hannah with sam if he knew, he would ran after them in the night just like he did to their brother later. like, he can punch josh on the way to the shed because josh hurted someone, not chris. chris is so kind he doesn't even angry at josh for what the guy did to him, it's always about others. and you think this guy would hurt someone who is important to josh? really???

Emily and Matt had left after Emily blamed Matt for losing an expensive bag of hers and she dragged him along with her to go find it, Sam had decided to take a bath after being in the freezing cold.
Josh had sent Chris and Ashley off together to find a spirit board he had laying around somewhere, while Everyone was gone you and josh had a soft silent conversation. Filling time waiting for the others to get back, that's when your conversation was interrupted.
"Alright, Josh! Let's see if you know how to hook up the hot water in your big ol' fancy lodge!" Sam teased as she made her way from the bathroom to you and Josh.
"oh yeah, it's just down in the basement. Y'gotta fire up the boiler," he said as if she knew how to do that, after a moment he realized that she couldn't possibly know how to do that and jumped up saying he'd help, Sam turns to leave to the basement and Josh turns to you, "wait for Chris and Ash Babe, don't start without me." you smile at him and nod your head as he gives you a twink, turning on his heel and following after Sam to help her.
You sat in silence looking around the lodge as you think about the long night ahead of you, your thoughts interrupted by Ashley making her way towards you and sitting on the couch awkwardly, "so..." she started before she was cut off, you both heard a scream.
What was going on?
You rushed to the basement door and pulled it open, but nobody moved. Then Chris pulled down a dark cloak from his head and said "mhm you just got munked!"
Sam didn't find this funny, She yelled at Chris for his low-blow prank before turning to Josh and accusing him of being in on it.
You slightly huffed, Josh didn't do low-blow pranks. His panks were always more intricate and complex than a simple chase in dress-up.
You all made your way to the living room, Josh teasing about how Sam, "totally pissed herself," and Sam huffing in annoyance.
Sam "had enough spooks for one night" and left to finally take that hot bath, while you, Josh, Chris, and Ash set up to use the spirit board.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You and Ash both took turns asking questions and things took a turn quickly...
"S-i-s-t-e-r --"
"Sister..."
"no! No no no we didn't kill them it was just a Prank! We didn't mean-"
"you know what... This isn't real."
"no Josh you said! You said you wanted to use the spirit board!"
"yeah well, m'not sure if you think-- messing! With me is gonna somehow help me deal with my grief but I don't need this right now."
Josh stood from his seat and began to walk away, you followed behind him.
"No, Josh C'mon-"
"no! You guys are full of it!"
And with that, you and Josh made your way down the lodge stairs.
You both stood there holding each other for a moment before Josh said he needed to do something and left you alone.
You wandered back with the two you last spoke to, they seemed to be freaking out about a photo they had found and decided to look for Josh.
"Josh was just with me," you explain
"If you go now we'll catch up to him."
Only you didn't find Josh, you all found ghosts, set up doll houses, and a passed out Sam tied in a chair, and finally you all found a man in a mask.
Chris was the first one to be put under, Ashly panicking tried to stab the killer with scissors she found you gasped as the masked man cursed under his breath, "live and learn!" and with one hit knocked Ashley out cold, and then he slowly turned to you...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You opened your eyes to a gruesome sight, Chris on the verge of tears as he looks back and forth between his long-time crush and best friend.
A distorted voice demanding that Chris make a choice before you put any input Chris pulled the lever,
"No! Chris! I thought we were friends!" Josh calls as Ashley screams and turns away,
"ahh, I see. You have chosen to save Ashley."
You rival Ashley with a Bloodcurdling scream as you watch Joshes body get torn in half, "NO! CHRIS WHY?!" you cry out as the gate opens and Chris rushes to Ashley telling her it's okay and to not look,
"why! Can't I look Chris? tell me he's okay, pleaseeeesss-" she whines out in fear, looking at Joshes hanging body as she lets out a frightened scream and falls into Chris, you cry as you hold onto Joshes cold hand.
"I'm... I'm so sorry..." Chris whimpers you shake your head, "I would've picked Josh if it were me, I would've done the same as you, Chris..."
Just as you all ran out of that shed you were all in you ran into Emily and Matt.
Chris cried out to them about what he had done. What you all had to see.
Matt was the most freaked out and Emily seemed to think it was some prank at first until she saw how scared you all really were.
You all made a plan to split up, Chris and Ashley go back to the lodge and see what they can find and be safe. While Matt and Emily look for the radio in the old tower.
"alright we have a plan, And Y/n?"

The tempation to write an until dawn fic of Josh somehow regaining his clarity after he became a wendigo.
He still has urges, but he can hold them back better. Chris provides him with raw stakes and other things from the local butchers. (In my local butcher, you can buy lamb innards for whatever. Scottish dishes, dog food, flavour additives etc etc)
His mental clarity varies from day to day, so Chris came up with a system. Josh will text him a number from 1 to 10 every morning. 1 being "I want to rip someone's throat out" and 10 being "I feel like normal Josh." Chris knows to be worried if the number goes below 5. If Josh hits a 1, Chris needs to lock him in his room for both their safety until he's calmed down.
Thanks to the curse, Josh's eyesight is blurred, but he's not completely blind. He can sense moment better and has inpecible reflexes. He's super fast and agile, hanging from anything and everything to jumpscare Chris, much to his dismay. His teeth are jagged and deformed, severely affecting his speech and ability to show his expressions. He's not nonverbal. It just takes a while to get it out. He can't go outside much due to his condition, and with how popular his court case became, but when he does, he goes with someone and wears a face mask. The soles of his feet have become softer to absorb his weight when he jumps from place to place, causing him to move more silently (aka, Josh has something like toe beans)
Josh is on a LOT of meds, but he's just thankful he finally got the right medication for his conditions. He still has hallucinations, but Chris figured out that they don't show up on cameras or screens, so when Josh calls for help, he runs in like paparazzi and snaps photos everywhere with much hilarity for Josh to laugh at, then he shows Josh the photos to show that nothing was there.
Overall? I just want Josh to get the help he deserves and, quite frankly, needs.
At first I think Chris would be, rightfully, pissed at Josh, but once he hears of his mental illnesses and at how shitty his past therapist was (because let's be honest, that guy in the game didn't sit right with me) he learns to see his perspective.
Still deciding if the others should be alive or not. Emily wouldn't forgive Josh. Just no. Michael, maybe? I don't know. Jess didn't really know what he did fully, so she might be more inclined to forgive. Sam would forgive. She's kind of like that. Ashley would tolerate Josh but not fully forgive. She might be guilty if she stabbed him, but in her defence, she had no idea. Matt might want to forgive, but seeing Em's distrust in him would make his hesitant
This has been rotting my brain for days help.

Until Dawn Headcanons!!!
Josh smokes. (He has a lighter so I'm assuming it's actually more canon than headcanon.)
One of Sam's favorite songs is Unwritten.
Chris LOVES Fortnite and Minecraft.
Mike had a childhood dog — Rusty — who was his best friend. (That's why he bonded with Wolfie so much.)
Jessica loves Justin Bieber and One Direction.
Josh's middle name is Robert. (Named after his father.)
If Sam found a spider, she wouldn't be afraid of it and she wouldn't kill it. She would take it outside.
Ashley loves romantic comedies.
Sam works at a shelter part time. Josh visits occasionally just to play with the dogs.
Josh writes scripts for movies in his free time. He uses his friends as characters in them. Chris and Sam are usually the main characters and always survive.
Sam likes to go to parks, sit under a tree and write poetry.
Emily has a cat. (Siamese or maybe Spinx. I seen another headcanon that she had a Spinx cat and I think that's actually a better fit. 😂)
Jessica has a chihuahua named Princess. (But she's mostly a purse puppy and SUPER bitchy.)
Josh has an iguana named Vorhees.
Matt is a momma's boy.
Mike has big bonfires at his place every summer and invites everybody over. They always have beers and music playing in the background as everybody talks about memories of high-school.
Beth is (The twins didn't die. 😤) like the brother Josh never had. They play video games often and poke fun at each other all the time.
Josh treats Hannah like his own daughter, constantly babying her and acting SO overprotective that even Beth is shocked sometime. Hannah hates it unless she had a bad nightmare and needs comforting from her older brother, who will cradle her in his arms and hum to her until she falls back to sleep. They have been doing this since they were children.
Either way, the Washington siblings with protect each other no matter what the situation is.
Jess' favorite color is blue. (Though I think this is canon because it's literally the only color she wears!)
Josh wears eye contacts. He used to wear glasses as a kid and that's one of the main reasons why him and Chris bonded so much.

NO BECAUSE ok everything about the final scene in the game (not including interviews) on the 8 survivors run means so much to me. I feel like it’s so crucial in how they might be in the aftermath
Tumblr media
Sam scrambling to her feet after being physically blown from the lodge, still vigilant, like she’s waiting for the monster to come tearing out after them. She saved all of their lives and she’s still waiting on the other shoe to drop, for them all to have to freeze and evade the monster until they figure it out again (or until there’s nobody left to hide from the monster at all). Her place in the finale of the game is so incredibly brave and I think that she has a lot of issues with being vulnerable afterwards. It’s easiest with Mike, because at least she’s not the sole pillar of support, but even still the idea of being caught off guard or being weak makes her anxious.
Mike is on his feet as well, in fact it looks like he was still standing when she got thrown out. Unlike everyone else he won’t let himself rest even for half a second on the ground. He’s immediately putting himself in the role of the protector, the shoes he’s been trying to fill since jessica was taken. Specifically getting to Sam, the one person who has been by his side for the night, who saved him from his isolation in the sanatorium (even though he technically saved her), the one who knew exactly what he was thinking and pulled off the final step of their plan, saving everyone.
I think that even if you aren’t a Sam/Mike fan, their bond is undeniable. All throughout the night they play off eachother effortlessly, saving eachothers lives time and time again. I think that no matter what their relationship status, the two of them become almost codependent. Mike more than Sam, but bother either way. Also on Mike more personally, I think his fear of isolation just got a lot worse. He finds himself following his friends and family around a lot, both to protect them and to curb his anxiety
Emily is up next, stumbling and limping and alone. She’s practically been screwed since she lost Matt, alone even after she found her friends what with them threatening and nearly killing her. I think that in the end she doesn’t necessarily forgive Mike or Ashley, but she gets it. If it had been her in one of their shoes she might have had the same reaction, and she’s smart and self aware, I think she would realize that as well. That being said, I think it takes her a while to find her place in the group again, and she’s never really going to be close with Ashley or Mike.
Chris is interesting because you almost can’t see him. In fact it looks like he dove behind a picnic bench. What I did notice is that he looks at Ashley before anything else. Before the burning lodge or the chopper or his friends he looks at her. I think that in the end they for sure are together. It’s a trauma bond mixed with a lot of pre-existing feelings. After Josh is gone Chris becomes very introspective, as well as observant of others. He spends a lot of his time worrying about Ashley’s state of mind, what she’s thinking and feeling. If he missed what was going on with Josh, he refuses to miss something like that with any of his friends now and especially his girlfriend.
Ashley is one I was excited to talk about because personally I don’t love her but shes so expressive. She never stands up. When the fire gets worse and the lodge explodes she still doesn’t stumble to her feet like the others. She’s exhausted and willing to just wait and hope that the monster won’t burst out engulfed in flames. When the chopper shows up, she curls into a ball, presumably sobbing into her knees. Relatable. I think that she becomes really vulnerable afterwards and paranoid beyond belief. I would go as far as to say she might spend the first while of her aftermath locked in her bedroom, I’m talking boards on the windows and furniture in front of the door fear. The only person who would be able to see her is Chris, desperately trying to take care of her. Emotionally, I think she would fluctuate between total listlessness and emotional outbursts.
Bonus Matt and jessica
Their final scene is not much to analyse because it’s 90% relief, but I do notice some things. Mainly, Jessica’s hand reaching for Matts sleeve, and Matt getting himself in the place between Jessica and the monster. Whether unconsciously or not, that means a lot. I think even before the game Matt spent a lot of time being a middle man in his group. The gentle mediator between people, the person that keeps them from having big group drama all the time. Without the group, that role becomes smaller. I think that after the mines, that kinda falls away. He doesn’t have it in him anymore to mediate his friends and in a way, there’s no longer a need, and he hardens. He’s always been protective and that becomes more so.
Him and Jessica become close for sure. Just having him around makes her feel safe and I think knowing where she is, serves as a reminder to him that he is more than a mediator. He protected her in the mines, he made the conscious choice to save her more than once, and he was successful. (This last one is the most ramble bc I didn’t have a ton to work with)

Outlast: Chapter Eight (Sam Giddings x Reader)
Tumblr media
Series Masterlist
Word Count: 2.5K
Tumblr media
3:26
You bust into the room, Sam and Mike right on your heels. Just as you do, a scene of chaos folds out in front of you. Ashley and Chris are strapped into two chairs, opposite each other. A man in a skull-like mask stands across from them, who you could only assume is this Psycho that had hurt Sam and killed Josh.
Chris holds up a gun at the Psycho, firing rapidly. Nothing happens. Before you even have time to react, the Psycho speaks up.
“Oh Chris...Oh, Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris.”
“What the fuck…” you and Chris mutter in unison.
The Psycho reaches up to remove his mask. “Oh you've heard of blanks before. I mean really?”
When he reveals his face, you're sure that your heart stops in your chest for a second. You can hear Sam gasp behind you.
And in front of you stands Josh, smiling proudly.
“Josh?” Chris asks.
“Josh!” Sam gasps.
“Josh,” Mike mutters.
“What the actual fuck.” You rub your temples, barely able to comprehend the situation in front of you. You really wish you had some alcohol on you right now.
As Josh starts his whole spiel, you run over to untie your friends. As you get Ashley, Mike moves to free Chris.
“How does it feel? Do you enjoy feeling terrorized? Humiliated? I mean, panicked? All those emotions that my sisters got to feel once one year ago! Only guess what? They didn't get to laugh it off! No! Nope! No no no! They're gone!”
Josh’s voice is shaky and his eyes are unfocused as he rambles on. You can’t help but pity your friend, who had been more tormented than you could’ve ever imagined by the overwhelming guilt over Hannah and Beth’s disappearances.
As Josh examples his pranks, going more and more into the specific details he concocted, you can’t help but be wary at Mike’s increasing anger.
“I don't know if you noticed this, Josh, but none of us are laughing.” He bites out his words, tone rigid.
Dread washes over you as you realize exactly what’s making Mike angrier than he should be. He thinks Josh had something to do with Jessica’s death.
Fuck. Double fuck. You mentally punch yourself, allowing the miscommunication about the truth of the Blackwood Mountain to get this far. You need to explain to your friends the truth, and quickly, before more get hurt.
“Why are you doing this, Josh?” Sam asks, voice barely above a whisper. But her question still rings out in the barren room.
“He’s out of his fucking mind over here. Don’t even bother fucking asking the looney,” Mike quips.
“He’s sick,” Chris says, pity dripping off his words. His attempt to diffuse the situation is a miss. Mike is still fuming, and you can practically see steam leaving his body.
“Mike, calm down.” The words leave your lips before you can even stop them.
He whirls around to face you, and you immediately know you’re going to be bearing the brunt of the anger. You’ll gladly take it if it means Josh won’t be falsely blamed for acts he didn’t commit.
He storms over to you, chest to chest as he glares up at you. “He fucking killed her.” His words are laced with grief as he fists the front of your shirt.
“No he didn’t,” you throw back, exasperated. “It wouldn’t make any fucking sense. Think logically about this, Mike.”
He scoffs and rolls his eyes. “You of all people shouldn’t say shit like that. Keeping all these fucking secrets. Were you in on this? Is that why you’re not saying shit?”
You don’t even try to entertain his words as his voice gradually becomes louder, more intense, and you can hear Sam trying to break the two of you up. Her arm wraps around your bicep and she tugs you back, away from Mike.
Josh barks out a laugh behind you, causing you all focus your attention back on him.
“This is all just perfect. Come on, you guys are all going to thank me when you guys become internet sensations!”
You raise an eyebrow as Chris is the one to speak up. “What are you talking about?”
“Oh you better believe this little puppy is going viral ladies and germs. I mean we got unrequited love. We got fights. We got...we got blood! I don't think there's enough hard drives in China to count all the views we're gonna get, you guys.”
“Jesus Christ,” your hand runs over your face as you take in everything Josh says.
But of course, Mike isn’t too pleased with his response.
“What the fuck are you talking about, you fucking ass hat? Jessica is fucking dead!”
Josh blinks, looking stunned at the news. “What?”
“Jessica is fucking dead, and you are going to pay, you dick!”
“Damn it Mike, stop it!” Your words are no use, and you can’t stop Mike in enough time as he strides up to Josh and with the gun he took from Chris, hits him across the face and knocks him out cold.
Sam and Ashley gasp as Josh falls to the floor. You immediately approach Mike, snatching the gun from his hand and throwing it across the floor.
“What the hell was that, man? I told you to think before you fucking do something you’ll regret!” You poke a finger in his chest, hoping to at least intimidate him a little bit. But you’ve had heated arguments before with him, and he doesn’t ever back down.
“I don’t fucking regret it.” His tone is affirmative. It worries you that you may not be able to change his mind about it. That you’re too late, and none of your friends will trust you
You kiss your teeth. “Whatever. It’s already done.” You glance down at Josh, who looks weak and sickly all crumpled on the floor. “Someone help me move him upright.”
“No!” Ashley protests. “He’s crazy. He had us fucking chained up, and, and, chased us all around. He’s a psycho!” She hides behind Chris, who wraps an arm around her shaking body.
You can’t help how conflicted you feel about the current predicament happening. You sympathize with all of your friends and their fears. Josh went too far; you weren’t going to deny that. But he was sick. He needed help. And antagonizing him only made it worse. Besides, none of them understand the severity of your situation—only you do. But there’s no use in arguing with them all now, when they’re scared and confused.
You throw your hands up in defeat. “Okay, does anyone have any other ideas?”
Mike steps forward with a look of contempt. “I say we tie him up in the shed.”
“What? That’s insane!” Sam beats you to it, echoing the same words you were just thinking. “We just do that here! There’s no reason to leave him outside.”
Chris and Ashley share a look that has you dropping your head in your hands. “Mike’s right,” Chris says.
Ashley nods. “It’s safer that way.”
Mike glances at you, triumph shining in his eyes. “Three to two. You’re outnumbered.”
Your jaw clenches. “You’re making a mistake, Mike.”
He doesn’t respond.
You sigh. You know you’re not getting anything else out of him. Mike was stubborn as hell, even more so than you at times. “Fine. If you’re going to do this, then I’m going with you.”
They all look surprised at your offer, turning to you with a variety of quizzical looks plastered across their faces.
“Tex,” Sam’s tone is warning, as if to tell you that it’s a bad idea.
Mike scoffs. “No fucking way. You’re gonna pull some shit on us out there.”
“Look, I’m compromising, okay?” You throw your hands up in mock surrender. “You can tie him up or do whatever the fuck you want. I don’t give a shit. I just wanna be there when you guys do it.”
Chris pipes up before Mike can get another word in. “That’ll work. It’ll be better to have an extra set of hands in case Josh tries something.”
Mike eyes you down, as if trying to catch you in a lie. You keep your face still. “Fine,” he finally bites out, “let’s get to it. Before he starts waking up.”

“Guys! Guys come on... seriously, this is crazy, you know?”
“Shut up.”
You trail behind Mike and Chris as they guide Josh to the shed, not bothering to help him up when he stumbles into the snowy ground.
“Give it a rest you two,” you mumble as they continue to let out all their frustration on him. “Can’t you see how out of it he is?”
Chris sighs in response. Mike completely ignores you. Again.
“Where are we going?” Josh looks all around him, once again tripping on the unstable ground. “Where are you guys taking me?”
Mike shoves him along. “Locking you up, bro.”
Josh’s eyes shift around frantically until they land on you. “You’re gonna let them do this?”
Mike scoffs. “She’s not letting—”
You interrupt Mike before he goes on another tirade. “I can’t outnumber them, bud.” You shake your head apologetically, wishing you could do more. “The best I can do is make sure they don’t try anything stupid.”
Josh’s body falls slack, as if he’s given up. You bite your lower lip as you stare at him in pity, taking in his gaunt and sickly features. You mentally kick yourself for not noticing them earlier.
Your head throbs from alcohol withdrawal and you pat your coat pocket, before holding back a sigh as your hands come up empty. Your flask was probably left somewhere back at the lodge, amongst all the chaos when you reunited with your friends.
You ignore the aching feeling that persists as you trudge along with the guys.
When you finally arrive at the cabin, Mike practically throws Josh inside. It’s barren, old and broken pieces strewn about. Mike ends up tying Josh to one of the pillars that looks like it's one more snowstorm away from breaking, pushing him roughly and taunting him as he does so.
“Stop it,” you bite out through gritted teeth, your frustration reaching its peak. You grasp his bicep, pulling him back. “Chris.” You jerk your head towards Josh, indicating he should take over instead. He quickly gets the hint and takes the ropes from Mike.
Mike tries to pull away from you, but your grip remains firm as you drag him to the corner of the cabin. “Look,” you use your free hand to rub your temples, practically feeling the stress lines on your face from how much this night has been taking a toll on you already. “He’s off his meds. Has been for a while. Cut him some slack, alright?”
He’s practically unresponsive to your plea. “He killed—!”
“Mike.”
He pauses, chest heaving.
You continue. “I told you I would explain everything. I will. Josh didn’t do that. I need you to trust me. Please.”
You can tell by the way Mike’s brow creases that he still feels uneasy about all of this. You’re hoping that Mike still has some kind of faith in you, even just a crumb. You don’t blame him too much; you know that the way you’ve been acting has seemed suspicious lately. But your circumstances are really strange ones, and it’d be hard for anyone to believe it without seeing it.
Before you can gauge Mike’s response, your conversation is interrupted by Josh’s teasing words.
“Oh and Chris? Man, you can forget about ever gettin' into Ashley's little panties after that little cock up with the whole ‘I'm gonna shoot you in the head, thing.’ She's better off with Mike over here anyways... At least he knows how to treat a lady…”
“Fuck you, man!”
“Hey, hey!” You rush over just as Chris grabs a stray wooden board, lifting it up over his head as if he was about to hit him. “Knock it off. We can’t be causing any more problems.”
Josh’s eyes narrow as they land on you. “Drunk as a skunk, drunk as a skunk! Couldn’t solve your problems, couldn’t save my sisters!”
Guilt floods through your chest as memories of that night flash in your mind again. Your tongue feels too big for your mouth, and the faint tastes of alcohol that remain make you want to clean your mouth out with soap.
“Back off.”
Mike steps up to Josh, pushing you back slightly. “Leave her alone, dude. You should be fucking thank her for trying to help your sorry ass.”
A breath of relief leaves you as you mentally thank Mike for stepping in. Josh eventually quiets down with a huff and a glare, and once you can tell he won’t be antagonizing anyone further, your friends turn to leave.
You follow them outside the cabin, but stop before you can make it more than a couple of feet away from the doors.
“You two should go on without me.”
Chris and Mike turn back to stare at you. “Listen,” you continue, “you two need to leave and cool off some steam. I’ll stay here, watch over him. Maybe I can talk some sense into him.”
Chris furrows his eyebrows as Mike crosses his arms.
“No fucking way am I leaving you with this lunatic,” Mike grunts.
“Well that’s not your fucking choice, is it?” You raise an eyebrow at him, crossing your arms to mirror his stance. “I can handle myself. And him, if necessary.”
He huffs in annoyance, but you can tell that he can’t argue with you on that.
Chris nods in reluctance, nudging Mike’s shoulder. “I’ll make sure to tell Sam you’re safe.”
“Thank you,” you say breathily in appreciation. “I’ll be back before you know it. Don’t miss me too much.”
A hint of a laugh leaves Chris’ lips as the two reluctantly head back towards the lodge.
As soon as they leave your sight, mere specks in the crisp white snow, you begin to move in untying Josh from his constraints.
“Whoa, whoa—”
“Listen to me.” Your voice is cold, and Josh is able to hold your gaze, recognizing the seriousness. “You need to run. Get as far away as you can. Got it?”
He nods, throwing his head back against the pillar. “I’m sorry, I’m real sorry…” Josh trails off, a distant look taking over his face as you deftly loosen the ropes around his limbs.
The dull gleam in Josh’s eyes has your heart clenching in your chest. He looks so lost, so broken. You wish you were able to see just how hurt he had been this past year. You feel guilty that you, or any of your friends for that matter, weren’t able to catch just how much he’d been suffering with the loss of Hannah and Beth.
If you weren’t untying his restraints, ear right by his lips, you don’t think you would have heard his next words.
“You weren’t supposed to be there…”
You think back to his adamance on getting you out of the cabin, and somehow, your heart breaks just a little more.
