The soft music of the windchimes attached to Haganezuka’s hat break the silence that has settled between you and your husband. This one, however, does not stretch uncomfortably between you two like it used to at the beginning of your marriage when meals were taken without a single uttered word. Today, the silence offers both of you a respite from the happy yapping you shared until just moments ago.

Even though your eyes remain fixed on the beautiful scene of the forest stretching across the fields beneath you and the setting sun in the background, you can feel Haganezuka’s eyes repeatedly flickering from the sunset to your profile.

“Thank you for spending today with me,” anyone else would miss the softness in his gruff voice but you can hear the sincerity loud and clear. His rough edges have rounded the more time he spent with you and his almost gentle tone is only a tiny fraction of his changes. Spending his birthday with you and enjoying a picnic together is another example of his altered self.

“Anything for the birthday boy,” you turn to smile at him but are stopped in your movements when you feel his chapped lips press against the corner of your lips; barely missing his intended target - your cheek.

The moment was over before your brain could even register what just happened. Haganezuka stares at you wide eyed and pink cheeked. His mouth opens and closes not making a single sound, and you briefly wonder if anyone has ever rendered your grumpy fiery swordsmith this speechless before.

Thinking of him as your grumpy fiery swordsmith emboldens you enough to lean forward, to chase the small fraction of closeness he just offered. With his face between your hands and your lips brushing against his, you whisper a quiet:” I think we can do better than this on your birthday,” before kissing him properly for the first time.
