#this isn’t just why the song relates to rand

Fuck it. Analysis of why this song does indeed fit the character because Spotify is rude for not letting us do that. My 3hr 25min 57 song Rand al’Thor playlist edition.
This is a very long post (look how long my playlist IS) I also just finished book 2 so there are spoilers to the end of that book.

right where you left me - bonus.-Taylor Swift
Rand fears that he’s going to be left alone without any one of his friends around him after all he’s the dragon reborn and the dragon reborn can’t do anything but live tragic lives. When they all left him because they were scared of his abilities to channel, it is really prevalent in this song. As well as him fantasizing about what it would be like living in the two rivers still.
august-Taylor Swift
Min telling Rand about her visions of the future that deal with him. Also Rand and Mats bard adventures
gold rush-Taylor Swift
You know how many people seem to be in love with Rand? A lot. It’s like Kaladin level. (That’s saying something) Anyways Rand here is like how he has wanted a sweet peaceful life with Egwene that he never gets to have, which is sad. But Rand probably finds another love (again idk I haven’t finished the series yet.)
illicit affairs-Taylor Swift
Rand keeping his channeling abilities a secret from everyone. Like an affair being kept secret
the lakes - bonus track-Taylor Swift
We all know Rand does NOT want the powers. I think this song feels like there’s a big weight being lifted off your shoulders as you go deeper into places where you can’t be found. Here it is almost like Rand stepping into the Stedding as he cannot channel there. Also the lines ‘I don’t belong and my beloved, neither do you.’ Idk who his beloved is yet but Rand currently doesn’t belong with his friends but he doesn’t belong with his enemies and I’m not sure where he sits at right now.
betty-Taylor Swift
There are quite a few scenes where Rand or one of his friends does something quite hurtful to one of their friends but are thinking of something different and they don’t realize how much it hurts them. And the lines ‘I'm only 17, I don't know anything. But I know I miss you.’ Really resound with me as Rand really doesn’t know anything about what his life is going to be like.
I Hear a Symphony-Cody Fry
Rand is a big dreamer (but in a different sense) and it may not be super prevalent in canon it’s because instead of crazy ideas he has very simple dreams and goals but he believes in them way too much and relies on these to help him get through struggles. This song has a very similar feeling to that in my mind.
World's Smallest Violin-AJR
Unlike the song, Rand’s troubles are quite big but nobody seems to relate to them or actually listen. ‘So if I do not find somebody soon, I’ll blow into smithereens.’ Rand needs to share his problems with SOMEBODY. Also unrelated to Rand but I love how in this song there are some parts where the melody changes between instruments and people and I think that is super cool.
Run-COIN
I feel like Rand and Mat share one braincell for a majority of the time. This song was them on their bard adventure where they don’t have much of a clue what they’re doing. But also Rand is very goal driven and will follow out his plans until the end. Shown as when everyone was like Rand we can’t save the girls and Rand says no we WILL.
nothing else i could do-ella jane
Rand rationalizes his actions to himself quite a bit of the time. This song is very fitting. Plus it’s a fun song.
Come Out Ye Black & Tans-The Wolfe Tones
Idk the planet (does it have a name?) this takes place on feels very Irish inspired in terms of scenery to me and here’s a classic Irish drinking song.
The Good Part-AJR
Rand doesn’t want this to happen to him but as his ta'veren nature coexists with his abilities to channel, he doesn’t have much of a choice but he wants the good part to happen to him now. ‘If there’s a good part, then I hope it’s not far, ‘cause I thought It’d be today’ is a good example of this in the song.
Bummerland-AJR
Do you ever get so anxious about life that you’re actually overly positive? (Like unhealthy levels of coping???) yeah that’s Rand in this song. Also it has the shared melody between people singing and instruments that is very prevalent in the album.
Scrawny-Wallows
Rand doesn’t really like things changing as much as his ta'veren nature ends up being. Also he definitely says the wrong things at the wrong times.
Haunted-Taylor Swift
Basically Rand at the end of the great hunt. He’s haunted by his actions and is unsure of what his future is going to look like because he has basically revealed himself as the dragon reborn and everything is different now.
The Chain - 2004 Remaster-Fleetwood Mac
We always need this song in a media playlist. It’s fitting. But also like Mat and Rands bard adventures.
Baker Street-Gerry Rafferty
I feel like there is going to be a minor mental health and healing journey for Rand in the later books. These lines exemplify my points. ‘And it's taken you so long To find out you were wrong When you thought it held everything You used to think that it was so easy You used to say that it was so easy But you're tryin', you're tryin' now Another year and then you'd be happy Just one more year and then you'd be happy But you're cryin', you're cryin' now’ so basically it doesn’t happen YET but Rand is going to go through a crisis like this song.
Why Am I Like This?-Orla Gartland
‘Oh, it's like I'm looking down from the ceiling above Never in the moment, never giving enough Let's go out and shout the words we never said. I got my mistakes on loop inside my head. Inside my head So why am I like this?’ Rand deals with lots of internal struggles as he tries to figure out who he is as a person while also figuring his powers out.
Clearest Blue-CHVRCHES
This is the scenes of Rand being in new surroundings for the first time and being in awe about how beautiful it is/ how terrifying it is.
My Life-Billy Joel
Rand doesn’t WANT to be the dragon reborn. He wants to be a shepherd. He wants to be a normal person but he doesn’t get to. His nature as a ta'veren however said no. Also I believe that Mat and Rand are going to have a falling out between the books and then reconcile at some near-death point
We'll Meet Again-Vera Lynn
From the eye of the world: “The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills, and we are all woven into the Pattern.” Also reincarnation is very real in this universe.
Brother-Madds Buckley
Rand visits the Dragonmount. Idk if this happens but I just feel it will be accurate. Also see the Rand mental health journey and the Mat and Rand falling out but reconciliation.
Always Forever-Cults
Rand and Mat’s friendship. I don’t care that this is definitely more of a love song (well maybe they were a bit in love haha) but those two are very close friends.
Mind Over Matter (Reprise)-Young the Giant
The lines ‘And if the world don't break I'll be shakin' it'Cause I'm a young man after all And when the seasons change Will you stand by me? 'Cause I'm a young man built to fall.’ Really give us Rands character arc. Does he go insane and die, get gentled and die or keep his powers and most likely die.
Hearing-Sleeping At Last
Yes. It’s an instrumental. But I feel that instrumentals tell more of a story than lyrical songs. I really like the repeated motifs throughout the song. It’s almost as Tam teaching Rand about the flame and the void and then when more instruments slowly come in, they start to overshadow but also enter-twine the motif with their own counter melodies. I love how it is so simple but says so much if you knew what to look for. I also love the parts where the main motif isn’t being played at all because you know that something happened there.
I'm Shipping Up To Boston-Dropkick Murphys
Rands week of pirate adventures. Also irish music!!
Dreams-The Cranberries
This song is about the troubles in Ireland right? 1- another Irish song. 2- dreams. Rands dreams have been plagued by that guy with the B name that has an apostrophe in it. Ba’zalmon maybe???(its Ba'alzamon) 3- Rands life is changing so much. That’s the first line of the chorus.
Stairway to Heaven - Remaster-Led Zeppelin
Every person in wheel of time has a story. Each story has a moral or a motto and I’m not sure where I’m going with this.
Mo Ghile Mear-Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill, The C..
Yet again Irish song but bonus because this song is in Gaelic and the title means ‘my gallant darling.’ so that is very cool.
Won't Go Down Easy-JAXSON GAMBLE
For the most part Rand is that person who is very kind until someone harms or threatens his friends and then he turns scary (like this song)
Telephones-Vacations
Rand is still scared of his powers for most of book 2 and there’s a line in this song that is ‘I wish I could live without you. But you're a part of me. Wherever I go. You'll always be next to me’ and that’s how I feel like Rand feels about his being able to channel. Once again he needs a hug, he needs some love, he needs some support and he just doesn’t get that so far (well at least that he can remember because he gets plenty of love when he gets knocked out and is unconscious) and that makes me very sad.
I Bet My Life-lmagine Dragons
Rand as he’s leaving Emonds Field and the Two Rivers not knowing if he’s going to see Tam again.
Vienna-Billy Joel
Someone needs to tell Rand that it’s ok that he doesn’t have the answers. Specifically they need to say ‘And you know that when the truth is told. That you can get what you want or you can just get old. You're gonna kick off before you even get halfway through.’ And this is a song that I can also relate to Vin and Kelsier because of their dynamics. (Fun fact!)
Guns for Hire-Woodkid
See the dramatic scenes where Rand is leaving the two rivers or the scenes where he is having a mental breakdown and all his walls and defenses he keeps putting up are breaking and breaking but can’t do anything about it
Can't Pretend-Tom Odell
There is (most likely) going to be one of those scenes like Wanda in age of ultron when Pietro dies and she like falls to the ground and screams and her magic shoots out in all directions. I feel like Rand is going to have one or more of those types of scenes if Tam dies or if any of his friends die but I’m not there yet. This song has those same vibes. However this song also kind of has the vibes of Robert Jordan’s patented main character energy (ta'veren) but less so.
Watch Me-The Phantoms
I think Rand becomes a master with the blade and that would be really cool to see as he channels and is a beast with the blade. This has the vibes of him jumping off a cliff and surviving because of his abilities. (Hey so I was actually wrong. I wrote this before finishing book 2 where his blade like melts or whatever and that just kind of starts a new arc for Rand and I’m excited for that)
Dead Man Walking-City Wolf
Rand as he hears about the false dragons getting gentled and when he realizes he’s the dragon reborn and that he is going to get gentled too. It’s just a matter of time (so he thinks)
Bad Dream Baby-Hippo Campus
Everyone has one of those comfort objects. For Rand it’s the heron-marked blades.
still feel.-half-alive
This song is kind of epic in a way that the immigrant song in thor Ragnarok is epic because he like basically comes back from the dead (and then infinity war happens and I’m NOT talking about that) but the lines ‘Floating in outer space, have I misplaced a part of my soul? Lost in the in-between, or so it seems, I'm out of control. Floating in outer space, have I misplaced a part of my soul? Lost in the in-between, but it can't keep me asleep for long, 'cause I still feel alive.’ Really kind of resonate to me for Rand in a way that he’s going to be hurt and he unconsciously will call the void to him (as he already does) and then channel and heal himself (the aes sedai can’t do that but Rand isn’t an aes sedai now is he??)
The Fall-half-alive
He does not trust the Saidin at all. He believes that he is going to go insane and he might idk. Again I’m only on book 2 for a first read.
Achilles Come Down-Gang of Youths
The call and response in this song really emulate Rand’s struggles with figuring out why he is the one who can channel as well as trying to keep Mat alive without the dagger and struggling against Ba'alzamon and trying to keep him out of his mind in his dreams. Most importantly it’s Rand struggling against his own mind and mental health issues. The French are the words that Tam said while he was almost dying about him rescuing a baby Rand and how he isn’t his true blood.
Come Over (Again)-Crawlers
‘Do you think that you’re happy? Just wait ‘til you’re sure.’ Rand does a lot of self soothing and self talk and working things off with himself internally so on the outside he looks calm and collected but on the inside he’s like the last 30 seconds of the song where there is someone screaming.
Could Have Been Me-The Struts
I’m sure later on in the series there is going to be a scene where Rand stands up to Ba'alzamon as the dragon reborn (that is the real struggle in the books right??? Or am I wrong) and him basically saying fuck you to him.
champagne problems-Taylor Swift
The bridge. Especially ‘How evergreen, our group of friends. Don't think we'll say that word again.’ Because the Emonds Fielders grow apart the further I’ve gotten in the book series.
my tears ricochet-Taylor Swift
The lines ‘And I can go anywhere I want. Anywhere I want, just not home.’ (Actually the whole bridge) That’s all. He can’t go back to Emonds Field. He knows that tam isn’t his biological father but all he wants is to go home to his father and have things go back to the way they were.
Test Drive - From How To Train Your Dragon-John Powell
Ok so some of these are much stupider than others. For example. Rand is the dragon reborn. This is from how to train your dragon. I’m funny. I know.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Theme-Samuel Kim
One of those just for the vibes songs but also like it kind of makes sense. The show pulled from lots of different mythologies and not just Rand but every character seems to have lots of ties to different mythologies, which is cool.
Where No One Goes-John Powell, Jon Thor Birgisson, Jónsi
Ok so this IS another one of those it’s for the vibes songs but also Rand being fascinated (yet terrified) by all the new experiences he has seen in his travels.
Caves-Cody Fry
Ok so all these Cody fry songs are here for instrumental purposes because they’re BEAUTIFULLY composed and they tell a story.
This one truly tells a story. Maybe it’s Rand as he realizes that he can channel and may be the dragon reborn. It’s very mysterious and magical feeling but also incredibly terrified as well. I can chalk that up to flute trills, French horns, low notes and a descending scale pattern as the song reaches its crescendo.
Fantasietta on a Theme from Photograph-Cody Fry
This one gives me the vibe of a ballroom dance but being preformed while dancing in the air (howls moving castle style) but as the dance progresses you learn that the dance partner isn’t there with you. How it relates to Rand? Idk. I just love it
Interlude: From Across the Room-Cody Fry
This one is Reaching for someone or something that isn’t there in the end as you make the trip to get to them and end up disappointed.
Interlude: Wind at the Edge of a Cliff-Cody Fry
This one is Rand as he dips into the Saidin for the first time. It’s really mysterious but not a scared mysterious but an exciting mysterious. I love the flute and clarinet trills especially as they add a curious element to the music.
Wander Anymore / Dunes-Cody Fry
Rand whenever he uses the portal stones. He wants to channel the power as little as he possibly can. Also he needs a hug but he doesn’t EVER get one which is shitty writing to me. The second half of the song is very much using the ways as a form of traveling because it gives a ‘we’re in danger. Go go go!’ Vibe.
Good Kid-Rob Rokicki, Chris McCarrell
See Rands poor mental health and emotional issues and self soothing. Rand and Percy Jackson actually have quite a few similar parallels. Especially the lines ‘I never try to do anything. I never mean to hurt anyone. I swear, I swear that I'm a good kid. Yeah, Percy, that's a good one. But no one ever will take my side. All I ever do is take the fall. I swear, I swear that I'm a good kid. Guess I'm good for nothing at all.’ But then there’s the i can be good enough for someone and everyone else is just wrong with a crescendo and a accelerando (slowly getting louder and faster for those non music folks) and it’s just beautiful and fits both Rand and Percy Jackson.
Underground-Cody Fry
This song is beautiful. But it’s definitely When Rand finally acknowledged he was the dragon reborn and then like stabs the dark one with the heron sword and burns the heron mark into his flesh (fuckin metal btw that’s crazy) and everyone can see him doing it. The reason for this description is because my boy Rand did it in full view and also this song is so musically gorgeously composed I could talk about it for hours. But I won’t. I’m just saying that I love it.
the fruits-Paris Paloma
Everyone pulls Rand in many different ways because he’s the dragon reborn and he can do all these different things and everyone wants him on their side. He has to choose if he’ll end the world or save it. I feel like Rand is going to have lots of internal conflicts throughout the rest of the series and idk if I want that or not.
Control-Halsey
Rand struggling with the fear of channeling but the fear of also not being able to protect his friends. Oddly enough can be related to Renarin as he figures out his abilities on his own.

Eye of the World - Chapters 25-30 p454/782
I’m more than half-way done now! wahoo!
Perrin can sense the wolves, can differentiate between them, knows their thoughts and somehow continues to think this isn’t the coolest thing that ever happened to him.
They encounter the Tuatha’an, Traveling People/Tinkers, and, uh, travel with them for a while. They’re friendly folk who practice non-violence. Tuatha’an are looking for a song they lost during the Breaking of the World. If they can find it again, the paradise of the Age of Legends will return.
Egwene gets to flirt and have some fun and relax. Perrin gets to pace around anxiously. We learn some about Aiel. Basically everyone on the Borderlands is prophesying the return of the Dark One. Sidenote: Aiel call him “Leafblighter” which is incredibly funny. It’s obviously meant to be “blight” but instead what i see is this:
Tumblr media
continued under the cut because there’s a lot
Back with Rand and Mat, they make it to Whitebridge. It’s called that because it has a white bridge. Each separate party spends time wondering if the others are dead.
They had to believe the others were alive. Why? So it will all turn out like one of Thom’s stories? The heroes find the treasure and defeat the villain and live happily ever after? Some of his stories don’t end that way. Sometimes even heroes die.
Tumblr media
News from the world: The False Dragon has been captured. The Great Hunt for the Horn is going to start soon. An Ominous Figure has been asking around for their party. Also Padan Fain the peddler appears to be two steps ahead of them. (I’m assuming that’s the weaselly fellow mentioned)
A Fade finds them and Thom launches himself at it so Rand and Mat can escape. Somehow I feel like Thom Merrilin survives this?? I know he’s got a Mysterious Backstory involving Court but I can’t for the life of me remember what it is. Anyway, the characters with the fewest braincells are now out on their own.
BACK TO PERRIN - they’re moving at a leisurely pace. Elyas (wolfbrother) is waiting for “something” to happen. Perrin has the most relatable moment so far: “Perrin could not make himself relax. At night he wandered among the rainbow wagons worrying, as much because no one else seemed to see anything to worry about as for any other reason.”
Perrin’s dreams have been mostly normal lately but the Dark Patriarchy finally finds him again and throws a bird in his face which attacks his left eye. He’s now marked? The Eye of the World will consume him? Not sure what that does. Anyway that’s the impetus for leaving the Tuatha’an and heading out on their own again.
“Ila was giving me advice on being a woman,” Egwene replied absently. [Perrin] began laughing, and she gave him a hooded, dangerous look that he failed to see.
“Advice! No one tells us how to be men. We just are.”
“That,” Egwene said, “is probably why you make such a bad job of it.” Up ahead, Elyas cackled loudly.
Tumblr media
“Perrin did not want to think about his dream. He had thought that the wolves made him safe.” The wolves tell him he has to accept them fully and then he’ll be safe from the dreams. Does he do this? Bafflingly, no.
Nynaeve is traveling with her future polycule Moiraine and Lan and this chapter is mostly about how hot-tempered Nynaeve is versus how cool-headed Moiraine is and how often Lan wanders off so he’s not in the middle lol. Nynaeve has a moment where she’s like “I wish Moiraine would leave. Lan can stay though. Because he knows the paths to take and he’s a useful person to have around. Yep. That’s the only reason.”
I don’t feel like I have a good handle on why people think the One Power is evil and Aes Sedai are all also evil? It’s been pretty obvious that there are two aspects to the Power and the Aes Sedai can safely use it without becoming corrupted and in fact they do their best to prevent people from accessing the corrupted Power? We’ve also heard that the Dark One uses his corrupted Dragons/whatever to attack the Aes Sedai like... all the time. idk I just haven’t had any actual evidence that Aes Sedai are evil. (they’re not a monolith of good, Moiraine herself says that, but all the “evil” AS stuff has been hearsay?)
Anyway, Nyrainelan reach Whitebridge and Moiraine senses Rand and Mat and they decide to search for Perrin and try to catch up with R&M in Caemlyn.
Perrin et al are being chased by ravens sent by the Dark One. Elyas takes them to a stedding (WHAT’S THAT, PRECIOUS???) where the One Power doesn’t work! Which I suspect is going to make Moiraine’s quest to find Perrin a little difficult.
Tumblr media
We also get the history of Artur Hawkwing. Elyas knows a lot of history for a dude who spends all his time in the woods with wolves. Every party leader has a repository of stories to share.
Anyway the Children of the Light show up (booooo) and the wolves say “they smell wrong, sort of the way a rabid dog smells wrong.” Perrin and Egwene are captured and one of the wolves dies trying to help them get away.
hnghgh children of the light being dipshits etc etc -- everyone who disagrees with them is a Dark Friend, yadda yadda yadda. They’re rushing to get to Caemlyn (to intercept the False Dragon who has been captured? maybe?). They show an interesting dichotomy with Byar and Bornhald. Just because Bornhald has a friendlier manner doesn’t mean he’s going to let them go. He’ll just say how sad he is that you’ve refused to see the Light before he sends you off to die.

hiya! I thought we all needed a little bit of fluff right now after everything that’s happened in the past 24 hours. here’s some entirely non-p*ndemic related niall fluff (with the teeniest, tiniest, littlest bit of smut—so little that it hardly even counts, but I wanted to mention it just in case.)
thank you to rand and maria for taking a look at this for me before I posted it! you guys are the best!
this is 1.8k, niall x reader.
--
the rest of my life;
Tumblr media
In your dream, Niall’s singing. You don’t recognize the song, but that’s not unusual—he writes so much that it feels like he’s humming a new tune almost every day, most of the time. This one is soft and slow but it’s hopeful, the way most of his music has sounded lately. Belatedly, in your dream, you realize it’s been a while since he’s written something melancholy.
Slowly, your dream fades. It’s one of those ones that escapes you as soon as you realize you’re awake, leaves you with nothing but a feeling and, in this case, a melody. One that you can still hear, despite the fact that you know your dream has ended.
Eyes still closed, you stretch out a bit in bed, toes curling, fingers reaching. It’s cold, and there’s too much empty space where Niall had been when you both fell asleep, but you’re not afraid. Deep breath in, deep breath out, you open your eyes.
God, you had almost forgotten how beautiful this room is. Summer sunlight streams in through the windows and across the crown moulding and Niall’s left the bedroom door open a crack—you can hear him, out in the sitting room, strumming his guitar and singing the same melody that had floated through your dream. Underneath your four-poster bed, Trudder Lodge hums quietly with mid-morning, after-wedding chaos, but that’s not for you to worry about. Willie and his bride will understand if you’re a little late for brunch. Besides, you still have plenty of time.
You stretch a bit more, surveying the damage: your head throbs dully (hangover), your feet ache when you point them (dancing all night in heels), and there’s a burn in the back of your thighs when you move to stand (Niall, last night, at the edge of the bed, with your legs resting on his shoulders, his face between your thighs), but overall you feel okay. Battle wounds from a good night are battle wounds you’re happy to suffer.
He’s left you a glass of water and a paracetamol on the side table, and you down them both before slipping into the fluffy hotel robe hanging over the pouffy settee in the corner. By the door, still hidden from Niall’s view, you still, and listen. It’s been five years and sometimes you still can’t believe that this is what you wake up to: Niall writing a song, the birds outside singing along, the Irish morning blowing a gentle, easy breeze through the window you left cracked open last night. The night had been so still, so warm, that you wanted to bring it inside with you.
The door creaks a little when you push it open the rest of the way and Niall looks up from his spot on the couch, guitar in his lap, smile stretching across his face. His hair is everywhere and his eyes are so, so blue this morning, glinting in the sunlight as his skin crinkles around them. He’s in grey tracksuit bottoms, low on his hips, and no shirt, and you think about him yesterday, in his groomsmen’s tuxedo at the altar, and then later last night, jacket slung over the back of his chair at the reception, top four buttons on his shirt undone, sleeves rolled up, salty sweat on his skin as he danced on tables, pulled you close during the fireworks, dropped his lips close to your ear and asked how much longer he’d have to wait before getting this dress off you.
“Didn’t hear ya wake up,” he says, and you bring yourself back into the present. He’s looking up at you inquisitively. “How’s the head?”
You pout, lower lip coming forward. “Why are you so far away from me?”
Niall laughs, shakes his head gently as you wrap your arms around yourself in a hug. “Five steps, petal. Come here, how’s your head feeling?”
It’s hardly even three steps, actually, to get from where you’re standing to the couch. He places his guitar on the floor—gently, his baby—and makes space for you to curl up against him, your legs slung over his lap, his hand coming to rest on your thigh. “Head feels okay,” you tell him. “Thanks for the paracetamol.”
“That’s alright,” he presses a kiss to your nose. “Figured you’d need it.”
“I wasn’t that drunk,” you lie, knowing it’s useless. Niall’s seen every state of you. “What are you writing?”
“Dunno yet,” Niall’s hand wanders gently up your thigh, until he finds where the robe gaps and slides it underneath. Warm, familiar, he rests his hand against the bare skin of your thigh, thumb rubbing circles into it. “Couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’d get some of my thoughts out this way, but it’s all shite.”
“I’m sure it’s not,” you move forward a little, letting his hand slide up. “How long have you been awake?”
“Ages,” he lets his head fall back against the couch. “Just thinkin’ a lot.”
You hum, knowing you have to be gentle and let him come out with it. Even after all these years he still gets like this when he has big emotions: a little nervous, a tendency to overthink, an anxious ramble that comes out in one long burst after he’s rolled it around in his head too many times for it to make sense anymore. You touch his shoulder gently, thumb tracing the shell of his ear, and let him take his time.
“Last night was really nice,” he says eventually. He’s not looking at you, so you hum an agreement, and he carries on. “Willie was so happy.”
“Melanie too,” you agree. “And she looked so beautiful.”
“Stunnin’,” Niall nods. “Radiant. It all got me feeling… got me thinking.”
“Hmm?”
“Just about, like, weddings, and stuff,” you follow his eyes as he glances down at your left hand, fourth finger, bare. “About what’s to come.”
Your heartbeat quickens but you’re not scared—with Niall, you never are. He drops his free hand to rest on top of yours, and keeps talking. “Just want to know, like, where your head’s at.”
It’s the kind of question that would’ve sent you running in previous relationships. The kind of open ended, interpretive question that would’ve kicked you into an anxious, inescapable spiral of self-doubt and terror. It would’ve driven you mad. But right here, in a quiet hotel room nestled in a lush, soft corner of Ireland twelve hours after the best wedding you’ve ever been to, the question feels right. Right here, with Niall’s hand on your thigh and his messy hair blocking your view out the ivy-covered windows and his suit jacket from last night still in a heap on the floor from your rush to get it off him, the question feels like the logical next step. You’ve both known this was coming. You’re not afraid of it, and, despite his anxiety right now, you know Niall isn’t either.
“My head’s right here,” you say, hand cupping the side of his face, your thumb pressing gently over his lips, “you know that.”
Niall exhales, lips pressing into a gentle kiss against the pad of your thumb. “Mine too,” he says. “I just wanted to be sure.”
“You can always be sure with me,” you say, and mean it. “I’m a sure thing. Forever.”
“Fuck’s sake,” Niall breathes out a laugh as you drop your hand. “How the fuck did I get this lucky? Come here, petal.” He bundles you up to his chest, moving his bum a little so you can straddle him, your faces inches apart, your robe falling open. You’re wearing nothing underneath it, and you can tell, from how you’re sitting on his lap, that he’s wearing nothing under his sweatpants, either.
“Could ask myself the same question,” you say, a soft gasp falling from your lips as he drops one hand between your legs. He presses his thumb to you, laughs when you whimper.
“You looked so beautiful in your dress last night,” he tells you, lips wet against your neck. “Couldn’t stop looking.”
“I know,” you’re trying to ignore his fingers, “you told me ten times.”
“Eleven, now,” he says, pressing harder. “I love you.”
“Love you too,” you manage it without your voice cracking. You’re quite proud of yourself for that one, actually.
“Kept thinking about you walking down the aisle toward me one day,” he says, his voice low, his fingers insistent. He’s so good by now, knows exactly what to do to make you fall apart, knows exactly how to drag it out for as long as humanly possible. “Literally couldn’t think about anything else.”
“I—” you gasp a little, but reign yourself in. You’re not letting him win just yet. “I’d like to get married here in Ireland, I think.”
“Would you?” Niall’s fingers still and you whimper, pressing your hips forward as you nod yes, yes, I would. He smirks, picks up the pace again. “My mum will be delighted to hear that.”
“I don’t really—” gasp, you can’t control it, “want to think about your mum right now, babe.”
“No,” Niall laughs, uses his free hand to push the robe gently off your shoulders, “I don’t either.”
--
Later, after you’ve showered and gotten dressed and picked scattered clothes up off the floor, Niall says it again.
“I really mean it, you know,” he’s leaning up against the counter in the fancy kitchenette, a cup of coffee in his hand. You’ve opened all the windows to air out the room and the smell of summer is settling over you both. He looks so handsome in his checked trousers and band tee, but. You’ve got four minutes before brunch starts. “I really do want to marry you.”
“I know,” you’re flattening out the back of your sundress in the mirror, trying to make sure you don’t flash too much bum. “I mean it, too. And about getting married in Ireland. I would love a place like this, somewhere similar.”
“Whatever you want, pet,” Niall places his coffee in the sink before crossing the room to slide his arms around your waist. Standing behind you, he rests his chin on your shoulder and meets your gaze in the mirror. “Just, don’t go around telling everyone just yet. Want to get you a nice ring and all.”
“Hope you have a romantic proposal planned, too.” You’re kidding, you’d elope with him at the drop of a hat, but.
He drops a kiss onto your neck, flattens one of his hands against your tummy. “I’ve had it planned for four years, darling. Just you wait. But come on, Willie will kill me if we miss brunch.”
And so, with a tap to your bum and a pathetic swat at his crotch as retaliation, you and Niall head downstairs to eat, drink, and celebrate Willie and Melanie. Hand in hand, you’ll cast each other knowing looks the whole time. Willie’s dad will pat Niall on the back and ask him when it’ll be his turn and you’ll feel warmth curling in your stomach, your heart buoying in your chest, stars in your eyes when Niall laughs and says, “soon.” He’ll mean it. And so will you.

More Signs The Dollar Is Weakening…
Good day… And a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday to you! I’m going to leave the Tub Thumpin’ to you today, as I’m having infusion confusion this morning. Hopefully by noon, it wears off, but right now, my head feels like it weighs 50 lbs. and is full of fog… But that won’t stop me, no sirree Bob! The FOMC Meeting Minutes were what I expected them to be, and we’ve got a couple of doves flying today… This and more for this Tub Thumpin’ Thursday for you today! The Allman Brothers greet me this morning with their song: Dreams… Which I can sheepishly say that I was having some strange ones last night!
Well, the currencies fought back against the dollar’s attempted move higher yesterday, and by the end of the day, things were as they were the previous day… The euro was trading over 1.12, the Aussie dollar (A$ ) was back to 75-cents, Gold headed back toward $ 1,260, and the 10-year Treasury yield dropped back to 2.25%… And what was the cause of this turnaround Wednesday? The Fed’s FOMC Meeting Minutes… Once again they proved to be disappointing to the markets. Instead of giving the markets clues on “how” their balance sheet would be unwound, they instead gave them the “when”, but even the “when” was a little sketchy, but the markets seem to have figured out that the Fed will tell them all they need to know at the June meeting…
Hmmm, of course had the markets just listened to me they would have been able to go about their business today without stopping everything to hear what the Fed has to say in their minutes… For I said, right here in this letter, that the Fed would wait until June when they hiked rates again, to give any clues on their unwinding of the economy an opportunity to sneak through the alley with Sally. Really to diffuse the effects of the unwinding…. Right now, it looks like, to me that is, that the Fed will give the skinny on the “Great Unwind” or GW, in June, and defer the start of the unwinding until Sept or October.. Even though the Fed continues, as a group that is, to believe that the slowdown in the first quarter was just “transitory”, they want to wait-n-see before they commit to the GW!
So… there you have it! All wrapped up in a nutshell, what happened, and why, and what I think about it! What else do you need to start your day? Have a Great day…
Gotcha! Hey! even in my fogged brain status, I can have some fun! Well, overnight, the euro held its gains above 1.12, but the A$ fell back below 75-cents once again, as the fallout of the Moodys ratings cut of China’s debt came back to haunt the A$ … The euro-lites of Norway and Sweden are seeing their respective currencies (krone and krona) on the rally tracks, with the Norwegian krone leading the way, as the krone is in a good situation right now, that I explained the other day, regarding how the krone was getting love from the its status as a Petrol Currency, and in addition, the love is coming from being a euro-lite, with the euro on the rally tracks..
I don’t know if you noticed yesterday or not, but in the currency roundup, the S. African rand had moved below the 13 handle… And it moved further into the 12 handle yesterday and last night… The rand is a European Priced currency, which means as the number goes down, the more value to returns VS the dollar, as it takes less of the currency to equal a dollar. I’ve always said that the rand was too volatile for my blood, and that I wouldn’t touch it with “your ten foot pole”. But, I would always say that when the rand was good it was very good, and when it was bad it was very bad… And for the longest time now, the rand has NOT been very good… But I feel a rallying rand is an indication that the dollar is weakening, for if the rand is allowed to rally VS the dollar, then the dollar is weaker! Gov’t corruption, strikes, and interest rates that should be higher to attract foreign investment, have been the bugaboos for the rand, but as I said, if the rand is allowed to rally VS the dollar, as it is right now, then it could be a very good indicator that the dollar is weakening…
And there has been some confusion lately relating to the two pricing conventions used in currencies… The American Style: is simply as the price goes up, the value is increased… the euro, the A$ , kiwi, and sterling are the main American Style priced currencies. For readers who requested it many years ago, I also convert the loonie and franc to American priced currencies.. But if you called the trade desk they would quote you in European Style for these two currencies.
European priced currencies take in all the other currencies… So, don’t be confused!
The Bank of Canada (BOC) met yesterday, as scheduled, and as I thought, they left rates unchanged at 0.50%… I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again, Canada has a housing bubble in Toronto and Vancouver, they are in dire need of rate hikes to stop the bubbles from growing larger. But the Gov. of the BOC , Poloz, is not going to hike rates until he absolutely needs to, because he’s a “trade guy”, and “trade guys” always want a cheaper currency to facilitate, trade… And rate hikes would not give him a “cheaper currency”… I’ve always like Canada because of the stable banking system, plethora of raw materials that other countries will always want, and a steady Gov’t… There are some cracks in the Gov’t’s foundation right now, and the BOC is losing their grip on the economy… I’m so ticked that this has been allowed to go on in Canada this long! The Canadian dollar/ loonie though is resilient, and because of those raw materials it is underpinned, as long as the raw materials are priced right!
The OPEC meeting and NON-OPEC Oil Producing countries, meetings begin today in Vienna, Austria.. I’ve already told you a couple of times now that these meetings could very well, show the unification of extending the Oil production cuts, and in addition, I wouldn’t be surprised to see additional cuts announced! If that would happen, the price of Oil would be underpinned for sure, at least short-term… And with a stronger Oil Price, the Petrol Currencies should really be receiving some love!
I’m sitting here this morning thinking that Gold Traders read the Pfennig yesterday, and decided to listen to me, and began to mark up the Gold price… (Hey! don’t laugh! It could happen, right? Oh, come on Chuck, if that happened, you wouldn’t be sitting here in your basement at 0-dark 30 writing the Pfennig. Instead you would be celebrated as the sage of the Mississippi!) So, back on earth and reality, Gold added $ 7.90 yesterday, to close at $ 1,258.60, and is up another $ 3.90 in the early morning trading today!
Hey! remember when I featured a FWIW section story about how Arizona lawmakers had sent a bill to the Gov. for signing, that would eliminate the capital gains tax on Gold & Silver that was bought at the mint… Remember the reasoning? It was the same as exchanging one nickel and two dimes for a quarter! Well, bust my buttons! The Arizona Gov. signed the bill and it’s now a law in Arizona! WOW! Now, if we can get other states to follow, eh? Talk about a way to get physical Gold & Silver to overtake the paper trades! Think about that for a minute… Municipal Bonds are usually exempt of taxes in the state it’s issued in, and some even have Federal tax exemptions. And they’ve always been popular… But if Gold & Silver doesn’t have capital gains taxes they could become as popular with the moms and pops I’m just saying…
The price of Oil slipped back below $ 51 in the past 24 hours, but only to $ 50.95, so still trading within’ spittin’ distance of $ 51… So much weight has been put on the Oil meetings today, that the risk here is that they disappoint, and that would spring the trap door on the price of Oil… Just something to think about, given the history of the OPEC meetings, a disappointing meeting is not out of the question! But, I’m betting a Krispy Kreme to a dollar that the Oil producing countries don’t disappoint today…
The U.S. Data Cupboard today has only the Trade Balance (read deficit) for April today. The usual Tub Thumpin’ Thursday fare of the Weekly Initial Jobless Claims is always there on Thursdays, so that too will print, but the more important print is the Trade Balance.. The dollar was a bit weaker in April, and so I think we’ll see the Trade Deficit back off the $ 64.8 Billion print from March…
Yesterday’s Data Cupboard had the April Existing Home Sales in addition to the FOMC Meeting Minutes, and like I said yesterday would happen, Existing Home Sales dropped from 5.7 Million per year, to 5.6 Million per year… So, we saw both New Home Sales and Existing Home Sales drop in April… Hmmm, isn’t springtime one of the best times to be home shopping? I’m just throwing that out there..
Well, I’ve beaten around the bush enough the last two days regarding the Trump Budget, so I might as well bite the bullet and get to talking about it… So, here goes my attempt to make some sense from it…
Well, the Trump Budget was presented to the masses on Tuesday… I was shocked to see actual cuts to spending programs, and he says that if we stay the course with his cuts, that the U.S. would have a balanced budget by 2027… It’s been a long time since the Republican Party could even get those words out of their collective mouths… However, by the time the lawmakers on both sides of the aisle get their hands on this, the final Budget won’t look anything like the one Trump presented to them on Tuesday… I find this process to be good, but the results awful…
One thing in the budget that I did have to laugh about, well, I guess it wasn’t funny ha-ha, but , well, I’ll let you decide… The Budget makes the assumption that the U.S. economy will grow at 3% per year for the next 10 years… Hmmm… Does he know that the U.S. hasn’t achieved 3% annual growth since 2005? And that this assumption of growth would mean that the U.S. economy expanded for 222 months, consecutively… Economist are saying that this current expansion, what little this is, has become long in the tooth (since 2009)… So, I found this “assumption” to be a bit funny, in that it’s never going to happen!
The markets have shrugged off the Budget, because they know that it will come out of the lawmakers’ gauntlet with a completely different look… So, why react now, when the final product will determine their reaction? Remember the games the lawmakers tried to play a few years ago, when we had a debt ceiling debacle here in the U.S. and they came up with a plan to “cut spending over 10 years, of planned increases?” So, they planned to spend money in the future, but then decided to not spend it, or at least so much, and they call that a “cut in spending” I shake my head in disgust.. .
To recap… The FOMC Meeting Minutes were disappointing to the markets yesterday, and the dollar’s rally was cut off at the knees. From there, the currencies and metals took over and have held the conn through the overnight and morning sessions… Gold regained its mojo and rallied yesterday, and again so far this morning. The BOC left rates unchanged, which was no surprise to Chuck, who bangs on BOC Gov. Poloz, and points out the resiliency of the loonie, given all the hits that Canada is taking on these days. Chuck also points to the S. African rand as a good indicator that the dollar is getting weaker, as the rand has been allowed to rally…
For What It’s Worth… Thanks to Ed Steer who highlighted this article on Barrons in his daily letter this morning (www.edsteergoldandsilver.com ) And it’s about the Markit PMI reports yesterday that I’ve explained the markets don’t pay too much attention to, but maybe they should? You can read the article here: http://www.barrons.com/articles/markits-u-s-flash-pmi-still-looks-somewhat-underwhelming-1495549467?utm_medium=email&sslid=M7G0NDc0NDMxNzexAAA&sseid=MzM1NDAwsDA2AwA&jobid=238a56db-d950-4376-aa94-037384c6d5bb
Or, here’s your snippet: “Growth of US business activity gained a little momentum for a second successive month in May, but the upturn still looks somewhat underwhelming…
May saw an encouraging upturn in service sector growth to the fastest so far this year, buoyed by rising domestic demand. Manufacturers, on the other hand, reported the smallest rise in production since last September amid lackluster export sales.
Peter Boockvar of The Lindsey Group had this to say…
We will certainly see a Q2 economic rebound with only the degree in question. The Atlanta Fed estimate has a 4 handle which if the case would lead to around a 2.5% first half run rate if Q1 is revised up to .9% as expected. Historically though according to Markit, a 53.9 composite index in their model equates to a 1.5% annualized rate of growth.”
Chuck again… this crack in the armor of U.S. Manufacturing comes at an interesting time, given all the disappointing data… And like I said, maybe the markets should be paying more attention to this data…
Currencies today 5/25/17… American Style: A$ .7470, kiwi .7023, C$ .7440, euro 1.1220, sterling 1.2063, Swiss $ .9729, … European Style: rand 12.88, krone 8.385, SEK 8.6749, forint 274.50, zloty 3.7258, koruna 23.5620, RUB 56.35, yen 111.90, sing 1.3849, HKD 7.7915, INR 64.58, China 6.8903, peso 18.41, BRL 3.2677, Dollar Index 97.15, Oil $ 50.95, 10-year 2.26%, Silver $ 17.15, Platinum $ 947.40, Palladium $ 765.82, Gold, $ 1,259.50, and SGE Gold… $ 1,256.93
That’s it for today… Well, my beloved Cardinals saw their bats arrive from St. Louis, and they hit the ball last night, winning in L.A. Good pitching will beat good hitting, that’s an old adage my dad taught me about the game years ago… I remember telling him that if that’s the case, then it’s better to have a good pitching and hitting team! He called me a genius, which at the time I thought was a compliment… HA! Stopped by the office yesterday afternoon after my infusion and lunch with Frank. It was great to see a couple of the people there. I really wanted to just get in and out without anyone seeing me, as I was not presentable, given my 3 hour adventure at the infusion center! Well, I need to get this out of here, so I can get the response, and then send it off to you. Then I can go back to sleep! But not too long, as I have a visit with the heart doc this morning! Steely Dan takes us to the finish line today with their song Kid Charlemagne… And with that, I’ll send you on your way to having a Tub Thumpin’ Thursday! Do some Tub Tumpin’ for me, will you? And Be Good To Yourself!

• A dancer, if she is great, can give to the people something that they can carry with them forever. They can never forget it, and it has changed them, though they may never know it. – Isadora Duncan • A good dancer is one who listens to the musicWe dance the music not the steps. Anyone who aspires to dance never thinks about what he is going to do. What he cares about is that he follows the music. You see, we are painters. We paint the music with our feet. – Carlos Gavito • A good education is usually harmful to a dancer. A good calf is better than a good head. – Agnes de Mille • A sense of humor is just common sense dancing. – William James • All night have the roses heard The flute, violin, bassoon; All night has the casement jessamine stirr’d To the dancers dancing in tune; Till a silence fell with the waking bird, And a hush with the setting moon. – Alfred Lord Tennyson • Ambivalence is a wonderful tune to dance to. It has a rhythm all its own. – Erica Jong • At the still point, there the dance is. – T. S. Eliot
