What's the best way to get into the Trauma Center series?

ALRIGHT SO trauma center is absolutely wild. The games are about surgeons but they are also absolutely silly and ridiculous like operating on a time bomb, ninjas, the power to stop time during an operation and to hear dead people, pathogens that look like little aliens, and a surgeon who side hustles as an honest to god superhero in full spandex.

There's 5 titles in the series, 3 for Wii and 2 on DS. Chronological order of the series is:

Under the Knife / Second Opinion > Trauma Team > Under the Knife 2 > New Blood

UTK was the first game released in 2005 and it follows the series protagonist Derek Stiles. it's a bit rough around the edges, crusty controls, has no difficulty settings, and the art style looks a bit dated (although many fans find it charming). Several years later Atlus decided to bring the series to Wii and remade the game with a major facelift and most importantly they added a new side storyline introducing Naomi Kimishima aka everyone's favourite character. Not my bias there was a poll. That was released as Trauma Center: Second Opinion and under the fucking incredible name of "Caduceus Z: Two Super Surgical Operations" in Japan, so you can just play SO and skip UTK.

One disclaimer about the game is that pretty early on there's a teen girl admitted who's suicidal and instead of being reassuring and acting like a health professional Angie is a fucking ghoul and yells at her that maybe she should just die then??! It's in both UTK and SO and so out of nowhere, Angie is an unpleasant little gremlin at the beginning of the game but she mellows out. I'd say the rest of the series is pretty good about grief and stuff like that, it's just this one scene that sucks dick

Trauma Team happens two years later in-universe and you could technically play with no previous titles because it follows a completely new set of characters but with the exception of Naomi and her manservant, so I highly recommend playing SO beforehand so you know what her bioterrorism deal is. TT was the last game released and most ambitious tc title even having cutscenes, but they are not animated because Atlus won't spend more than 10$ to make a trauma center <\3

TT is my favourite. You have six playable doctors in surgery, first response, endoscopy, orthopedics, diagnostics, and forensics. The first four modes are similar to the classic TC gameplay, the last two are long form. If you like Phoenix Wright or the Edgeworth games I think you will enjoy forensics, it's literally solving murder mysteries. Diagnostics is basically playing House MD which sounds really fun but flicking between two identical CAT scans looking for a minuscule abnormality can get frustrating and I don't blame anyone just going to the gameFAQ walkthrough for help on that lmao.

The cast is also half men half women doctors with a pretty diverse background. You've got Maria who's latina, Hank is indigenous (although not divulged in the game itself so half points), Tomoe and Naomi are japanese, Gabe and CR-S01 are the cracker rep. It's definitely not flawless representation, like having the latina woman be the fiery aggressive one of the group and Hank be the hippy in touch with nature is a biiit questionable but still I commend the japanese studio for at least trying and both their characters are much more than that. This game was developed around 2009 before diversity in bideo bames became a nuclear topic on the internet. Btw it takes places in 2020 and a massive pandemic hits the United States and it all takes place in MAINE. Fucking wild.

UTK2 happens one year afterwards in-universe and is a direct sequel to UTK back to following Derek, it was outsourced to another studio and frankly it shows. Not a bad game at all and it’s the most important trauma center contribution to mainstream society bc the track gentle breeze that became a viral meme. If you really liked Derek & co and GUILT operations you'll enjoy it. I do not have much to say, only played through it once.

Lastly there's New Blood, another new cast of characters several years time skip, this time it's a duo of surgeons dunked in sepia tone. Again you can jump into New Blood without playing any other title although they do mention events in previous games. You can totally play NB single player but you can tell by level design it's tailored for two and imo the most difficult game in the series. It's also the only game besides TT to have full voice acting starring nyquil'd Troy Baker as Markus. NB was ambitious, you can tell they had a lot they wanted to say. Themes like wealth inequality, access to medical care, corporations mining in the global south, a common fan passtime is screaming about what NB could have been if they could neatly wrap all those topics up into a solid story. It's absolutely not a bad game at all and I totally recommend it, but it could have been More.

If you've got either of those consoles it's pretty affordable to buy the games used at some vintage games shop, especially the Wii titles. TT got a WiiU release in 2015 but I don't think the shop is up anymore? Nobody is serious about collecting TC, atlus didn't even make merch for the series and basically ignores its existance, nobody's bidding up prices for a copy Second Opinion. The Wii games can be emulated on Dolphin and DS games on Desmume, there's a dedicated discord server that's happy to help out and answer questions. Or you could just do passive and watch a yt playthrough.

After 12 years since the last release the fandom is incredibly small but very passionate and we get really excited about new people joining and discovering the series. There's no "wrong" way to play the games, nobody will give you shit for playing out of order we're just happy people play trauma center period!! It really is a hidden gem, there's no other series like it, and it was arguably one of the best implementations of motion controls for the Wii in the console's whole run. If you liked Shoji Meguro's compositions for persona or SMT soundtrack then you'll definitely find some new bops in TC.

The series sold better overseas than in Japan, but even then Trauma Team was a flop in terms of sales and never released in Europe. It's such a shame, I wish it could pick up some kind of cult following. I really really want a new game but at this point I'd settle for remaster of the old ones or even a cheap little trauma center keychain from the atlus store, but even that is wishful thinking 😔😔

So if you do play it and you enjoy them make some noise towards atlus and remind them they do in fact own IPs besides fucking persona.

Originally born in Spain, Victor emigrated to the USA when his parents found better work prospects. It also meant he could access better education prospects, since he'd expressed an interest in going into research.

He eventually became the head researcher of Caduceus USA, the leading medical organisation in the United States, and his role in developing new cures for diseases was integral. While he is not known for getting along with his colleagues, his brilliance in the field of R&D is unparalleled.

His research became paramount when the threat of GUILT took over the world, and he played a key role in developing treatment strategies that were employed by Dr. Derek Stiles (and later Dr. Naomi Kimishima) to prevent the medical terrorist threat.

Powers and Abilities

Victor has a high intellect which he can use to great advantage in the field of research. Outside of his specialist subject he is still a quick thinker.

He's on the scrawnier side for a human. Not very physically adept, but a few colleagues whom he's smacked in the face out of frustration would say he's got a mean right hook.

Personality and Virtues

Very arrogant. Most people are idiots to him. He doesn't like to be outsmarted by his colleagues.

He is devoted to his cause of curing disease no matter what, and has been focusing on the rare yet deadly diseases that still plague humans.

Deep down though, he does care for those he works for but would never willingly admit to it.

I’m rewatching playthroughs of all the trauma center games except this time in order of game’s release. So instead of my “optimal” version of progression (imo) of UTK > UTK2 > SO > NB > TT it’ll be UTK > SO > NB > UTK2 > TT

I’m almost done with SO now, I finished UTK yesterday. My main notes as of now are 

1. SO is such a step up from UTK it’s ridiculous. The music, the art, the storyline, everything is so much more complex and it’s great. 

2. I overall prefer the art style in SO but some of the emotions in UTK feel much more raw and expressive with its art direction, so I feel like SO almost slips up on that a bit. I wish the poses were more varied, I think SO mostly changes the facial expressions between sprites and not the body poses, while UTK seems to vary body position as well, so that might be the issue.

3. NAOMI KIMISHIMA. I love Derek in his own right but my god literally Naomi is the best character and I missed her so so so dearly in UTK. Once you’ve experienced SO, going back to UTK there’s a very noticeable absence of Naomi.

4. Still weirded out by the fact that this is the second game in the series and not like the third or something. Why’d they make UTK only to go “haha sike” and totally remake it?? I understand needing to remake everything for wii but it’s drastically different in terms of everything, especially storyline, so it’s really odd to me that this came directly after UTK

5. UTK isn’t the best in hindsight, but it brings up very interesting medical dilemnas. Euthanasia is still a highly contested issue today, and without getting into the meat of it too much, Tyler’s reasonings are very realistic and sympathetic, while Derek’s rebuttal is also valid. 

6. Additionally, Derek’s response to Linda still gets me even today. It just feels really genuine and I legitimately think his advice is worth taking. I know Angie’s reaction is widespreadly detested, and it does seem a bit out of character for her considering the fact that she criticizes Derek’s own bedside manner earlier, but considering she’s also lacking in sympathy for her own father, maybe she’s just prone to being overly critical of people in tough situations. What she said to Linda was still detestable, but I think that it shows a type of pragmatic mindset that Angie sometimes falls into. 

7. On that note though, it would have been good for either SO or UTK to punish Angie for her behavior with Linda in some way. She doesn’t have to be fired, just give her a stern talking-to by one of her superiors and have her express genuine remorse for saying that to Linda, or at least have her apologize. It would have left less of a bad taste in my mouth with regards to Angie and that storyline and also it would have added a lot of complexity to Angie’s character by showing that she can make serious mistakes and has to apologize for her actions, just like a number of other complex characters (Derek, Naomi, Adel, Markus, and CR-S01 come to mind, maybe Little Guy too, although idk if he ever expresses explicit remorse besides the remorse of almost getting caught lol)

8. Naomi Kimishima’s storyline is so top tier it’s not even funny. I’ve said this ad nauseum in another post somewhere, but having her start out on the side of evil only to redeem herself later, while still suffering the consequences of her actions...so good!! I really love the layers she adds to SO in comparison to UTK, I really would have been interested to see what she’d be like in UTK though. Her voice actor is also fantastic and I really commend the acting she did for her. Naomi’s voice is literally so elegant yet authoritative, and it also has a haunting tone to it (especially in TT). Anyways <3

Oh nothing much to see here, just some alternate universe antics I've been doing for James Lunagazer, let's just say I have an few ideas in another timeline for what if he existed in the Trauma Center Game Universe, but as a sort of third protagonist alongside Derek and Angie.

In otherwords: What if in some alternate reality, fate had an different idea and James Lunagazer was at Hope Hospital from the very start of Second Opinion/UTK instead of St. Francis like I plan to have him at in the manga-verse?

I have a few what-if ideas floating in my head around the very concept of James being a third protagonist, (well technically fourth if you count Naomi during Second Opinion.)

Such as an potential split path regarding Second Opinion Chapter 6-4, for those familiar with that paitent you operate on, such as what if in that continuity where James is present, that particular operation went horribly wrong, and as a result James became the new protagonist of events surrounding UTK 2.

That could be another fanfic I'll probably cover in future, though that's not to say I'll stop world-building the Trauma Center Manga Verse James, far from it, just figured I'd want to try something of my own outside of that.

Despite this currently still being thought-out and planned future fanfic that's mostly set in the game story universe, it will still have certain things shared with the manga-verse James Lunagazer, such as him still having the Soothing Choir for example, but not sure if I'll add the Apollo god being able to speak to him much like Asclepius can for Derek in the manga however.

Also haven't given an title idea for that particular fanfic series yet, but maybe something along the lines of Trauma Center Second Opinion: Another Scalpel or perhaps Trauma Center Third Opinion.

Anyway that's it really, just wanted to try doing an Second Opinion Game counterpart for James, might be doing Kira, Julia and a few of the other OCs I have planned in future but we'll see.

What is your opinion on just playing trauma center: under the knife 1+2. I have a 3ds but not a wii, would I miss important story arcs or have a lesser experience?

UTK 2 is a direct sequel to UTK which is the very first game so no, you wouldn't be missing anything plot-wise but you would be missing naomi the best character in the franchise

i think trauma team is the best game with the most engaging plot, new blood is hit and miss (also most difficult) but it has some interesting stuff to say about money and ethics in medicine even if its got the weakest antagonists imo

UTK2 was outsourced and feels very direct-to-video and it's personally my least fave. the music especially is crusty af for a series known to have great osts, but if you're a derek/caduceus fan you'll probably like it. it's inoffensive but not anything to write home about.

i do think the wii titles really show the best tc has to offer, it can be emulated but its not the easiest to set up wii emulation, @cosimothegaydragonman and the tc discord server is where i'd go for tips on how to get it running on Dolphin emulator. the tc fandom is small but very nice and helpful to anyone wanting to experience the games :3

So, been playing a lot of Valkyria Chronicles 3 recently as Valkyria Chronicles is another franchise besides Star Wars and Trauma Center I've fallen in love with, and just I've had the idea of trying to mix Valkyria Chronicles music with Trauma Center/ Trauma Team music, using UTK 2 Chapter 4 Episode 8, since UTK 2 gets a lot of flak for lack of music variety, just to see how well it blends together via Drastic DS emulator recorded on my tablet via screen recorder.

I felt Desperate Plea fit the mood for the Valkyria Chronicles music used, given the heart to heart shared, between Angie and Derek, but see what you think.

As for the OST I used in this edit, it's from the first Valkyria Chronicles game called Empty Loneliness by Hitoshi Sakimoto, followed by Trauma Team's Guns and Knives composed by Atsushi Kitajoh and Ryota Kozuka.

I might start doing some Valkyria Chronicles stuff on here, but I'll see.
