Robert E. Howard was born on January 22nd in Peaster, Texas, and would live in seven different Texas towns by the time he was eight. From a young age, he was influenced by the economic boom-and-bust of Texas oil. He worked odd jobs while attending high school, and in spite of holding no love for the rigid structure of public school, went on to graduate. He never went to college, and instead took courses at the Howard Payne Commercial School in stenography, typing, and bookkeeping. According to his letters with H. P. Lovecraft, one of his many influences, Howard chose the profession of writing because it would allow him to set his own schedule. Included in his influences are names such as Arthur Conan Doyle, Jack London, mark Twain, Sir Walter Scott, Edgar Allen Poe, Oscar Wilde, and Lord Alfred Tennyson. After a slow start to his writing career, Howard found his groove in Weird Tales where he was able to consistently write stories about popular characters. He admitted, over time, that characters would eventually be retired, as he could no longer authentically write stories about those characters. Although Howard is best known for his fantasy works, he was an incredibly versatile author who wrote successfully in a variety of fictional genres.
