TVGATE 📺💖

1.) Glee- Ryan Murphy is my enemy and glee is unhinged but it is hands down my FAVORITE show of all time. I started watching it when I was in 8th grade and the chokehold it has on me to this day is unreal. Season one was lighting in a bottle and to follow it up with an even better season after that? Lea Michelle is also my enemy BUT s1 Rachel berry is so fucking funny. Glee is the reason I joined chorus in high school- like the impact glee has on me? Incredible. Just 10/10. I could say more but we will be here all fucking day. And ofc Santana is my favorite character and I hope Naya is resting easy right now 💖

2.) Sucession- This show ate my ass for weeks and the brain rot after I finished it is still going strong. I avoided this show for a minute bc hearing about it through osmosis was enough and the fans put me off. I started about a month or two after the finale dropped. Like fuck rich people and fuck most of these characters but goddamn do I love it. I blew through this show so quick bc the acting??? The dialogue! THE EVERYTHING 🥵👏 you just know that if there’s a party or a dinner or some kind of rich people bullshit event that it will be the most compelling shit you’ve ever seen. Boar on the Floor was so sadistic and evil and FASCINATING. Like- I wanna open these people up and examine them. I was a Kendall girlie during my watch and a Shiv girlie post-show. I will say if you wanna enjoy this show just avoid.. most men’s opinions on it. I’ve heard the most shit takes on this show it’s ridiculous. It definitely lives up to the hype.

3.) Lovesick- Guys 🥺 if you’re gonna watch anything from this list watch this. I watched it when I was on a huge Netflix deep cut kick and WOW. Very lighthearted and funny romcom about a dude that finds out he has chlamydia and goes down the list of his old partners to tell them they need to get checked. All of these characters are so lovely and you just wanna root for them. It only loses points because it’s unfinished. I would’ve loved to see where things go for Dylan and Evie 🤧

4.) The Haunting of Bly Manor- INCREDIBLE. Mike Flannigan puts his whole pussy into into everything he makes. The write is incredible, the mystery is so well thought out. Every loose end is tied up just enough to let the viewer still have room to speculate. Definitely not scary in the way that Hill House is but everything else makes up for that. The cast??? I fucking love Rahul Kohli and I’ve loved that man since iZombie. Victoria Pedretti is the love of my life and the way she plays Dani? The range she has to go from Nell in Hill House to Dani is so sick. I just adore her. And of course T’Nia Miller as Hannah? She’s the clear standout. I need to see her in everything I’m BEGGING. The Hannah episode is truly the best episode of the entire season. This is a tragedy through and through and your heart will break for every single one of these characters. Just a gorgeous piece of television 💖

5.) Euphoria (Season One + Specials)- Again, Sam Levinson is my enemy but goddamn is season one SO GOOD. The aesthetics, the acting, the characters, the cinematography!? When Sam has a passion project and a story in mind he can truly make magic. Also putting Zendaya on your vision board and then actually landing her to be in it is so dope. The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed aka S1Ep7 is my favorite episode by FAR. So real, so funny, so compelling. Everyone showed up to set that week to make MAGIC. I don’t make a ton of fanart but euphoria had my ass so hooked that all I wanted to do was draw Rue and I sure as hell did. I was looping All for us for MONTHS. It’s still the #1 song on my Spotify TO THIS DAY. The special episodes during Covid were also so well done. Season 2 is dog shit so it isn’t included in this but rip to Angus Cloud because he was so special and the clear highlight of season 2 as Fez. (I could watch him beat up Nate Jacobs all day 🥳)

A huge honorable mention for the shows A Young Doctor’s Notebook, Chewing Gum, & The Bear (s1) because holy shit 💖. The first 2 are both absurd comedies from my Netflix deep cut era.

AYDNC stars Daniel Radcliffe as this doctor that gets addicted to morphine in the backwoods of 20th century Russia. It’s a dark comedy and a wild ride. I only watched it once and I have no idea if it’s still on Netflix or not but if you have nothing to watch and you want something that’s pretty out there or you’re a fan of Daniel’s comedic acting you’re in for a TREAT.

Chewing Gum stars Michaela Coel as Tracey. So 👏 Fucking 👏 Funny. The writing is incredible and I can’t speak highly enough about the way Michaela drops you into the world for a wild ride. Tracey’s pretty much in the end of that awkward transition period between your teens and adulthood. Just a really hilarious coming of age story that DEFINITELY would’ve benefited from a true final season. If you like Michaela Coel you will like this. She also has a show called I May Destroy You and I can’t wait to sit down and watch it. I’ve heard all good things 💖

The Bear is way newer and s2 didn’t drop that long ago so I won’t go too in-depth about it like everything else but INCREDIBLE SHOW. If you like food and sad white men and just- EVERYTHING about Ayo Edebiri then you’ll love this. Season 2 isn’t my favorite but Season One?? This show makes me miss living in a city. I just 💖💖 I can’t recommend it enough. Jeremy Allen White’s arms are reason alone to watch. I’d let that man [redacted] my [redacted] for hours like he makes me UNWELL he’s so gorgeous.

I’m like really late to the party but I heard we had a TV gate recently and I really wanna partake.

South Park: I’ve only seen a few episodes of it on TikTok but I’m hoping to get into it more. Also, I would just like to say that Butters is too pure for this world and we don’t deserve him😭.

The Challenge (+Spin-offs): I’ve blogged about this before. Currently Team Michele.

Teen Wolf: I’ve only seen a few episodes, but like South Park, I’m trying to get into it more. I’ve also seen the movie.

HK: I’ve seen seasons 17 and 19 onward. I’ve also seen random episodes from various seasons in passing because there’s an HK channel on my TV that plays continuous reruns. I’m also a firm believer that they should put HK contestants on The Challenge. I know for a fact someone like Elise would dominate physically and also bring a lot of drama.

LOST (2004-2010)

Yes I wrote an essay about why you should watch Lost...READ IT!

In this essay, I will tell you why Lost is the best show ever to exist!

Many people describe Lost in the following sentence: “Oh, so there’s a plane crash, and all this crazy stuff happens, and then it just gets really confusing and the it has a horrible ending...” and let me just say anyone who says that are WRONG and simply have no idea how to put any bit of information together to come to a solid conclusion about what really happened.

However, Lost is truly one of the most well-written tv shows when it not only comes to both plot but character as well, and it just truly hurts to see that people are so quick to judge something before taking the time to truly judge what is going on.

If I could describe Lost (and I can do this quite well as I’ve watched all 121 episodes 9 times), I would say the beginning goes as follows: “Lost is a show about flight Oceanic 815, that takes off from Sydney, Australia to Los Angeles on September 22, 2004 (which is the same day the show premiered) and crashes somewhere in the middle of the ocean on a deserted island. However, they are soon to learn that the island they inhabit is not quite as deserted as they once believed. I won’t say more because I think it is best for you to find out for yourself.

But it is important to know that for 2004 Lost was REVOLUTIONARY to the television industry. Before Lost, it was considered taboo to spend larger amounts of money for the pilot of a show that may not even work out. In fact, when the ABC chairmen funded the 14 million dollar pilot for Lost, he was fired for risking such a huge amount of money for a potential flop!

However, once they recognized how successful the 2 part pilot was, many of the shows with expensive pilots you see now (ex: Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, & American Horror Story)  have recognized how profitable it can be to take risks in investing large amounts of money in tv shows. Lost helped shaped television and you should pay respects to the show that did it all for you!

But if there is ONE thing that Lost has ever excelled with is their characters. With 14 main characters, (and 1 honorary main character), Lost utilizes each episode to focus a majority of their time focusing on one character and who they were before arriving to the island. For the Oncers who are familiar with this concept, Once Upon a Time was written after Lost but is run by a majority of the same people, but I would argue Lost is written a lot better in terms of consistency but I may just be biased.

And something that Lost was really praised for was bringing such a diverse cast to the screen featuring well-known celebrities such as Naveen Andrews, Maggie Grace, Ian Somerhalder, Daniel Dae Kim, Harold Perrineau, and Dominic Monaghan. 

With each episode focusing on one character, Lost excelled at breaking many stereotypes that are often forced on the television screen every day. Daniel Dae Kim, who plays Jin on the show says that he was first afraid to join the show because he was worried that he would be placed in the stereotypical Korean role where he is very abusive and controlling of everything his wife does because that’s just how he is, but was very happy that Lost gave his character many different layers they got to learn about their character as the show went on.

The characters both on and off-island are used to discuss many serious topics such as faith vs science, destiny, life and death, and many other things through the well-written and enjoyable plot for the show.

How they break other stereotypes I will allow you to learn for yourself when you begin the wonderful journey to one of the best shows of all time. Give it a chance, and if you aren’t hooked by the end of season 1, I won’t hold it against you, but trust me when I say that this show is definitely something to get involved with...also watch these 2 trailers...they both take place in the same setting but they both also have different narratives they portray and that’s important.

#TVGate the 100 (2014-)

I’m something of a nerd myself and since @marcdjr00 wrote a little “essay” i figured it was okay to get carried away and write as much as i need to for me to express how good this show is.

PLOT:

The 100 is a show about what happened after the end of the world and the ways that we inherit the baggage that is left behind from those who came before us Which often forcing us to make impossible decisions in the name of survival.

SETTING:

It essentially takes place several generations after the world was destroyed. Which I think, personally, is so nuanced since most shows about the apocalypse only show us the rebuilding of society, whereas, by the time the 100 starts it is already built. Geologically speaking the majority of the series takes place around Washington, DC. It’s not relevant I just think it’s cool.

CHARACTERS:

The show itself manages to balance an impressively large cast with a handful of main characters who each have their own personal arcs, motivations, and struggles.

The show also honestly deserves points for diversity. A huge chunk of the main cast of characters are people of color, characters with disabilities, members of the LGBT community, and characters from a wide variety of ages. As the seasons go by this really only seems to strengthen. I would also like to point out that it was the only show with a southeast Asian lead male character in the US. Anyways I just think it’s cool to see such a wide variety of ethnicities that you don’t usually get to see.

You also see a character openly struggle with her disability and chronic pain throughout the series as well as characters dealing with PTSD, depression, and other mental illnesses throughout the series.

The cast is also always changing and the show finds ways of bringing in new characters and making you care about them. The character’s relationships evolve over seasons and their personality evolves with them. And because it is so successful at bringing in new characters it also isn’t afraid to part with ones or hold back on showing the consequences of people’s actions and the high stakes of survival.

THEMES:

The show really uses a few main themes throughout the series, often introducing news ones and challenging idea’s throughout the story. Common ones are things like

1. Survival and doing what it takes to stay alive

2. Preserving humanity, which goes beyond just survival and focuses on what makes us human and “making sure we deserve to survive”.

3. Grief and trauma, most characters have a lot of baggage and they all hold the grief of their life choices and what they have been through

4. Forgiveness and Hope, forgiving others and yourself for what you need to do and always having hope in the future and that you and others can change for the better.

5. Moral greys, often characters don’t have good choices they have best choices. Everyone has motivations you can understand and empathize with, even if they’re meant to be the villains. You also see the heroes making choices that seem evil or horrendous. The idea is that you can see the other’s point of view and that “there are no good guys”.

The character’s so desperately want to break the cycles of the past too but each season it feels like it changes what that means. So make of that what you will.

MAIN RELATIONSHIP:

Whether you view these people as platonic or romantic, the two main characters Bellamy and Clarke are the head and heart of the show and it’s their connection and co-leadership that leads each season. Ideally, in my heart, it’s an enemies, to leaders, to friends, to lovers kind relationship. But you have two leaders who work two so well and seamlessly even when on opposing sides, and whether it’s platonic or not the two are soulmates. And it’s how they complete each other that drives the show's conflicts and resolutions.

That and the two actors literally got married in secret so jot it down that if the show doesn’t make the two canon it’s a robbery.

OVERALL:

And each season always manages to entirely reinvent itself in surprising ways that are always different from the next. It’s not a stagnant show by any means and while some season’s drag on more than others the current season really makes it all worthwhile.

It’s so underrated and often compared to other shows in its level of intricacy. I’ve seen it compared to Lost and Game of Thrones several times and it really deserves such a larger following.

I will admit I’m not the biggest tv show girlie so my top three are

1) The Simpsons: Been watching it my whole life, it’s my favorite show, and there’s so many episodes I get to rewatch it year round without ever being bored

2) Bob’s Burgers: Around September I do a yearly rewatch of all the episodes and it’s just a show that has grown on me over the last decade. Ever since the movie came out I feel like it’s gotten more sentimental and every other episode has me in tears

3) Pushing Daisies: your honor, this was my high school comfort show and I’ll forever be sad it didn’t get at least one more season. It’s my kinda cheesiness and kooky and I’ll love it forever

so i have a good amount of favorite shows, but imma use tvgate to tell you to all watch years and years. its a british series thats on hbo in the usa and i truly cannot even describe it fully. its honestly terrifying and takes place over the course of 15 years (2019 to 2034) within this one family, and how their lives change with developing technologies and the rise of polarizing politics over those 15 years. think of it as a mix of black mirror, house of cards, and some family drama. its honestly amazing and i highly recommend
