After five rounds, The Takeout commenteriat will vote on who they believe was victorious in that week’s draft. At the end of 2020, the staffer with the most weekly victories will select a charity of his/her choice that The Takeout will make a donation toward. The previous  drew many passionate voters who were more than ready to reminisce about summers past. After a tight race throughout the first day of votes, Aimee Levitt pulled ahead and scored a well-earned victory with expert picks like garlic fries and lemon slushie (as well as an unexpected swerve toward lobster rolls in the final round). Congrats, Aimee!
This week’s draft is nothing if not seasonal, and it’s equally likely to delight and disgust you: Best pumpkin spice items. Is this a joke? Maybe. Are we about to take our Draft duties very, very seriously? Absolutely.

Now let’s cozy up to fall’s coziest flavor.
Marnie: Okay, let’s kick it off with the acknowledgment that Aimee winning the Best Ballpark Food draft is appropriate, since she’s the biggest (only?) baseball fan of the three of us.
Allison: Everybody loves hot dogs.
Marnie: And garlic fries. This Draft will be tough to win people over with. But Allison’s got first crack at it.
Allison: Wait... I have the first pick? I can’t remember the last time this happened! I’m so overwhelmed!
Marnie: Use it wisely
Allison: Alright, so obviously my first pick has to be the iconic pumpkin spice latte. It’s the crossover item that made us a pumpkin-crazy nation.
Marnie: OF COURSE
Allison: Once upon a time, back in the Dark Ages, coffee and pie were two entirely separate things. No one had dreamed they could be together in one cup.
It changed the way we see everything. There would be no Cronut without pumpkin spice lattes. No sushi burritos. Why have one when you can have both?
Marnie: Do you think its popularity is deserved?
Allison: I am a devoted black coffee drinker, and I still get a PSL whenever the first crisp day of fall arrives, and one on Thanksgiving morning.
Allison: I don’t know how anyone could drink them regularly, but they’re a nice treat. And, nowadays, a good reason to get out of the house.
Going out to get a PSL is not an errand. It’s an event.
You need a special outfit that includes a soft sweater, and maybe a scarf. You need to inform everyone you know on social media before, during, and after.
Marnie: That would have been my first pick too. So now I’m in a lurch. But I’ll say Pumpkin Spice Tea. Because we always talk about how it’s really just spices like clove and nutmeg and cinnamon, and those are nice in a warm drink beyond coffee.

Allison: You know, I don’t know if I’ve ever tried this. How does it differ from chai?
Marnie: It’s probably just like any number of other warm spiced teas, just with pumpkiny marketing. But Trader Joe’s “Pumpkin Spice Rooibos” tin is adorable, dammit!
Aimee: Of course it is.
Marnie: I fall for it every time. And it’s not as sweet as a PSL.
Aimee: Well, few things are. But maybe if you dumped in a few tablespoons of sugar?
Allison: Or actual pumpkin...
Aimee: That would spoil it! It’s about the SPICE!
Allison: What about blending pumpkin with maple syrup, and putting a spoonful of that in your tea?
Aimee: Huh. That could either be really good or amazingly terrible.
Marnie: TBD.... First pick, Aimee?
Aimee: Pumpkin bread!
Marnie: Oh damn, of course
Allison: There has never been a day where a pumpkin bread has been in front of me and I didn’t eat the whole thing.
Aimee: I especially love the recipe in Joy of Cooking. It’s sweet and spicy and perfect.
Marnie: The “spicy” makes all the difference. I think it should make your nose wrinkle a little.
Aimee: But I also love the pumpkin challah in . I made a couple last week and they make the best French toast.
Allison: I used to make a pumpkin brioche and use it to make bread pudding. It was pretty damn amazing.
Marnie: You were born for this draft
Aimee: I was actually torn between waffles and pancakes, but I love waffles more, so that’s what I’m going with.
Allison: I have not had these either, and am wondering how these particular waffles have been pumpkin spiced.
Is there pumpkin in the batter? Poured on top?
Aimee: In the batter, and mixed with the ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
Marnie: Does it need cream cheese drizzle on top to really sing?
Aimee: Oooooh, yes, that’s genius!
Allison: I’m thinking of the recipe I did last year for butternut squash pavlova, but making the topping with pumpkin and putting it on a stack of Belgian waffles.
Marnie: Aimee’s double whammy of delicious pumpkin spice carbs has me reeling. How can my second pick compete?
Aimee: I believe in you!
Marnie: I will say pumpkin spice Cheerios. Getting to drink pumpkin spice cereal milk is a lovely way to start the day.
And it’s a nice contrast with all the hot pumpkin spice stuff we usually eat and drink
Allison: Oh GODDAMNIT that was my pick!
Marnie: HA!
Allison: I was apprehensive about buying that, but I had to because of the pumpkin spice bet I have with my husband. When we tried them, the Cheerios made the milk taste like pumpkin pie custard.
Allison: We bought like 20 boxes so we could enjoy them all winter. It was a fine decision.
Marnie: Allison, what’ll you choose now that I’ve swooped into the cereal space?
Allison: I’m going to take pumpkin spice ice cream, much for the reason you picked the Cheerios—it’s a nice cold option, in contrast to the PSL and so many other pumpkin spice’d foods.
Aimee: With caramel sauce and lots of whipped cream! Maybe pecans?
Marnie: Ooo, any particular brand?
Allison: Remember those Talenti layer things I love? They’ve got a pumpkin pie one now with pie crust and stuff.
Marnie: DAMN I want to try that
Allison: What’s also nice: we’re all so ready for fall the second Labor Day is over, but it’s still hot. And even though it’s hot, I’m STILL wearing a cute jacket outside, out of principle.
Marnie: True. We need pumpkiny items for the last legs of summer
Aimee: With the hot sun of summer but the cool breeze of fall...
Allison: I anticipate eating a LOT of ice cream over the next five weeks or so.
Next up: pumpkin pie toaster strudel. You can debate the need for pumpkin spice-anything all you want, but when you see pumpkin toaster strudel, it’s like “this makes perfect sense”
There’s nothing to quibble about. It’s a thing, and it should be a thing.

Marnie: Only major downside of toaster strudel is that you absolutely have to warm it, whereas a Pop-Tart is flexible and can be eaten room temp. But a warm toaster strudel really is amazing
Allison: What I don’t like about pumpkin Pop Tarts is that they should be better. It’s like, if Pop Tarts respected us, it could be amazing. But they don’t. They phone it in.
Aimee: I feel that way about most Pop Tarts.
Marnie: Okay, my third pick might be....controversial. But hear me out: pumpkin pie
Aimee: Ha ha!
Marnie: The original pumpkin spice item
Aimee: It’s true! It’s so obvious, no one even thinks of it anymore. Someone should call it pumpkin spice pie.
Allison: Pumpkin pie is one of my favorite “bed pies.” Have I told you about that concept?
Marnie: Sounds self-explanatory
Allison: I wrote about it a few years ago. It’s essentially a family bonding experience where we all stay in bed and eat an entire pie together from the pan while watching old cartoons, like Garfield’s Halloween and Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Pumpkin is ideal for this.
Allison: The filling isn’t going to plop out all over the sheets. And the crust isn’t ultra crumbly
Aimee: Ah, yeah, I guess you wouldn’t have bits of fruit falling all over the sheets.
Allison: If made well, you can pick up a slice of pumpkin pie and eat it with your hands. Just like pizza (non-folded, of course). I very much encourage both of you to try this.
Aimee: And you can squirt the whipped cream directly into your mouth. No mess!
Allison: You understand me, Levitt!
Marnie: AIMEE
Aimee: Rolled in lots of cinnamon sugar.
Marnie: STOP TAKING THE GOOD THINGS WHILE I FAIL TO THINK OF THEM

Allison: I have not had a good doughnut in a while, and now it’s all I can think about.
Marnie: So just to be clear, we’re not talking about a filled doughnut

Aimee: Well, I suppose you could... but yes, I was thinking of the cakey doughnuts. I love cider doughnuts so much.

Allison: Here’s your variation for the stove: fry it in hot oil just like any other doughnut. There ya go.
Aimee: My next pick is pumpkin spice oatmeal. With lots of brown sugar.
Marnie: Interesting—does it come in that flavor or do you add the spices to make it that way?
Aimee: Quaker does make that flavor, but I’ll bet you could just add the pumpkin spice if you want to do homemade.
My philosophy is that anything that tastes good with cinnamon would also taste good with pumpkin spice.
Marnie: Yes, I can’t imagine anyone being all in on cinnamon but out on nutmeg. Cloves? Mayyyyybe divisive. But it all seems to speak to the same palate
Aimee: Warming spices!
Allison: And it’s coldest in the morning! This is science.
Marnie: How does the pumpkin factor in if you make it yourself? Pumpkin puree right in there with the oats?
Aimee: The beauty of pumpkin spice is that there doesn’t have to be pumpkin. Only spice: the blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.
Allison: Yup! You can just stir it right in, with a bit of spice, and maybe some maple syrup to sweeten.
Marnie: I’m going to try to court the CPG crowd with a busy, on-the-go pumpkin spice item: the Spiced Pumpkin Pie CLIF Bar
Allison: Never eaten this! I had a Clif bar once in the early 2000s, and that was the end of that.
Marnie: Yeah, you either love them or hate them. I love that they actually feel substantial, like you just had breakfast. Regular granola bars never make me feel that way. Allison: Alright — my fourth pick is pumpkin butter. What makes this so great is it has the power to make anything into pumpkin spice.
Marnie: Here’s my question with pumpkin butter: what does it work best on? I can never figure out what to apply it to
Allison: You can stir a spoonful into your oatmeal, or put it on ice cream, or into your coffee or tea. Literally anything.
Warm milk! Pancakes! Toast!
Serve it with pork chops, smear it on cookies or graham crackers.
Marnie: Has an application ever failed spectacularly??
Aimee: This is like the shrimp scene in Forrest Gump.
Allison: ^^^and shrimp is a bad place to use apple butter.
But if you don’t know how to restrain yourself when feeding yourself pumpkin butter you should just stop cooking. Let other people do it for you. You can’t be trusted.
Allison: Very! I shared my super-easy apple butter recipe here last fall. You can do that with cubed pumpkin, or canned. As always, just keep an eye on things, because it’s all visual cues on that one. The line between apples and pumpkins in fall desserts is very thin.

Please tell us what makes it a worthy pick, for those of us who haven’t tasted its majesty yet
Allison: Pumpkin pudding is much creamier and luxurious than pie! And easier to make, in a way. You don’t need to fuss with the oven, and don’t need to worry about making a pie crust. I make a pie crust better than anyone, and honestly do enjoy the process, but it adds a good amount of time to the process.
Sometimes you’re okay with waiting a few hours for pie. And sometimes you’re like “I want pumpkin something within the hour,” and this is what can get you there.
Marnie: A shortcut to immediate pumpkin spice intake is key
Allison: Exactly. There’s a ton of variables I consider when coming up with recipes.
One of them being “how long do I have to wait before I eat this dessert”
Aimee: That’s always an important one.
Marnie: Sometimes you don’t need to consider cook time at all. Because sometimes the thing you want is not edible in the least. Folks, my last pick is a pumpkin spice candle. To make EVERY room in the house smell delicious, not just the kitchen!
Aimee: Ha ha!

What is Quick Pickling?
It’s so simple I don’t know why more folks don’t talk about this. The veggies I pickled in these photos are all heirlooms that include amarillo carrots, atomic purple carrots, chiogga beets, golden beets, and golden wax beans. Hence the rainbow of colors.
What You’ll Need for Quick Pickling:
Fruits or Veggies
Most folks just think of pickling cucumbers, but you can also make quick pickles with green beans, beets, bell peppers, carrots, cauliflower, asparagus, radishes, squash, tomatoes, onions, and more.
You can also quick pickle fruits! Peaches, watermelon, blueberries, and more.
Basically, if it’s an edible fruit or veggie, you can probably pickle it. What can’t you quick pickle? The only produce that shouldn’t be pickled are delicate veggies like leafy greens and lettuces.
Quick Pickle Equipment
Besides the ingredients, you’ll need a cooking pot for making the brine for your quick pickled vegetables (I love these enamel pots) and mason jars to hold your produce. That’s it!
Quick Pickling Brine Tips:
The brine is probably the most important part of the quick pickling process. It not only preserves the veggies or fruits, it also brings the flavor to the recipe.
Quick pickle brine is made up of vinegar, salt, water, and the optional sugar. The most important thing to know about your brine? In order to keep out any harmful bacteria, you need a quick pickling brine with a 1:1 ratio of vinegar to water.
An Overview of Brine Ingredients:
Vinegar: You can use almost any basic vinegar for your pickling brine. This includes distilled white vinegar, apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, red wine vinegar, and rice vinegar. You can either use them alone or combine them to make creative brine solutions. But avoid using aged or concentrated vinegars like balsamic or malt vinegar. The most commonly used vinegars for quick pickles is apple cider vinegar or distilled white vinegar.
Salt: Avoid table salt, which often includes additives and can discolor your pickles or give them strange flavors. Instead, use pure sea salt, kosher salt, canning salt or pickling salt. This is the coarse sea salt I love.
Water: Really any water will work, but to avoid strange flavors from chlorinated city water or extra-hard well water, use filtered water if you can.
Sugar: Sugar helps round out the flavor and keeps the brine from being too sour or salty. This isn’t always necessary in a brine solution, depending on the recipe. However, if your resulting quick pickled recipe is too sour or salty, consider making it again with a bit of sugar.
The Basic Brine Formula:
A very basic brine formula is a combination of:
1 cup distilled white vinegar
1 cup water
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
This can easily be doubled (or quadrupled!), depending on how many jars you’re making.
Bring the brine to a boil, pour over the veggies in a mason jar, put in the fridge, and 48 hours later, you’ve got a some delicious pickled snacks for the family. However, that’s just the basic version– you can get creative as you like with flavorings and herbs.
One more tip for the pickling brine: always taste it before you add it to your jars of veggies. The flavor of the brine will determine the resulting flavors of the quick pickled recipe. So make sure you like the way it tastes!
Quick Pickling Flavor Options:
You can be super creative with your quick pickled vegetables. Seriously, the sky’s the limit!
Here are some ideas for pickling flavors:
Fresh or Dried Herbs–including dill, thyme, oregano, rosemary, marjoram, bay leaf, etc.
Whole Spices–black peppercorns, coriander, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, etc.
Ground Spices–turmeric, paprika, pickling spice mix, spice blends, etc.
Misc items–garlic, onion, shallots, fresh ginger, dried chili peppers, fresh hot peppers, horseradish, etc.
How to Make Quick Pickled Vegetables
This basic recipe makes 2 pint jars of quick pickles.
Ingredients:
Vegetables of choice (approx. 1 pound)
Fresh or dried herbs, spices, or flavors of choice
1 cup vinegar of choice (see notes above)
1 cup water
1 tbsp. salt (I use this salt)
1 tbsp. sugar (optional, see notes above)
Directions:
Clean your mason jars and set aside.
Prepare your vegetables. Wash and dry, and then figure out if you want them whole or thinly sliced, cut into spears, peeled, etc.
Put your preferred flavors, spices, and herbs in the bottom of the mason jars.
Pack vegetables into the jars. Leave 1/2 inch of headspace. Pack them in tightly without smushing them up.
Make your brine: Put your brine ingredients into a pot and bring to a boil. Stir occasionally to dissolve the salt and (optional) sugar.
Pour the brine over the produce in the jars. Leave 1/2 inch of headspace.
Remove any air bubbles (this tool comes in handy) and put the lids on the jars.
Let the jars cool to room temperature on your kitchen counter, then refrigerate.
Wait at least 48 hour before eating the pickled veggies to let the flavors meld together.
Notes:
Quick pickled produce can be stored in your fridge for up to 2 months.

Living on your own for the first time—not in a dorm context where you presumably have a dining hall nearby, but rather in your very first and likely very terrible apartment—comes with a lot of adjustments. Things like hand soap and toilet paper? Those things didn’t just magically appear in the bathroom when the bottle or roll was empty. Someone had to be monitoring the quantity of said products in stock and remembering to buy more. Huh. Weird. Sounds fake, right?
Now you have even more to worry about than just your bathroom medicine cabinet going bare. You’ve got a whole fridge and pantry to keep stocked because transitioning to adulthood usually means you’ve gotta start cooking for yourself more often than ever before. Being aware of how much salt, or butter, or hot sauce, or whatever else you can’t live without in the kitchen is your responsibility now. Mom’s not keeping the household grocery list anymore, kiddo. But that’s cool too! Because you are your own person, and you can decide what constitutes a kitchen staple in your house.
Building a pantry can feel daunting when you first move into a new place and are staring at bare cupboards and empty shelves, and filling them up with boxes of microwave popcorn and Fruit Loops is very tempting. (Don’t do that.) It doesn’t have to be such a monumental task, though. Have some fun with it! There are a few things we think you should keep in mind, and a few must-haves you shouldn’t forget about, when you’re stocking a pantry for the very first time.
1. Rice
One of the most versatile and inexpensive dry goods you can choose to stock up on, and something you will always be grateful for having on hand and in abundance. It may be a pain in the butt to have to haul home a 10-pound bag of white rice from the grocery store, but it’s worth it for all of those last-minute, can’t-think-of-anything-else-to-make situations you’re about to find yourself in. Store it in a big airtight container, because as much as you may think it's fine to roll the top down on the bag and secure it with a piece of tape, you will eventually find yourself with a rice explosion on the kitchen floor, and you will question your life choices.
2. Other Grains—Quinoa, Barley, etc.
Once you’ve gotten the hang of making your own rice from scratch, other grains won’t be far behind. Buy these in smaller quantities, since they’re more expensive and you’ll probably use them less frequently. Unless you’re a quinoa fanatic, in which case—buy in bulk from Costco, because it can get pricey. If you’re storing these in separate containers, like mason jars or quart containers, keep the plastic bag they came in folded up inside on top so that you can reference the manufacturer’s cooking instructions later.
3. Kosher Salt + Whole Black Peppercorns
Kosher salt is a supremely inexpensive item to buy in almost-bulk, like the two-pound boxes that are usually on the bottom shelf in the grocery store. Keep a little pinch bowl of it near your stove or on your countertop where you do your cooking prep and refill from the big box as needed. Invest in even the crappiest pepper mill and get a small container of whole peppercorns—just a few ounces will do!—and you’ll never go back to the pre-ground stuff.
4. Extra Virgin Olive Oil
You can find a passably decent olive oil in your regular grocery store, or you could spring for the fancy stuff from a specialty grocer, up to you. For your everyday cooking, though, you want an olive oil that’s kind of neutral in flavor and, frankly, not super pricey. Buy it in the size that makes the most sense for you. Are you cooking almost every day, sometimes more than once a day? Go for the big, several-liter tin that’s usually on the bottom shelf in the grocery store, and fill up a smaller squeeze bottle of it to use on the day-to-day. Probably cooking only two or three times a week? Go for a smaller bottle and restock regularly. Nothing is worse than getting surprised by old, rancid olive oil that’s been hanging around too long. And don’t store it on the counter near your stove! It gets too hot there. Keep it in a cooler, darker cabinet when you’re not using it.
5. Vinegars—Red and White Wine, Balsamic, Apple Cider
You’ll come to find that a splash of acid is exactly what a lot of recipes need to really round out the flavors and make the whole thing sing. Unless you’re regularly making your own salad dressings or pickling things at home, a small to medium sized bottle will suffice for a few months.
6. Veggie Stock
It’s really easy to make veggie (or chicken, or fish) stock on your own from scraps, if you’re feeling industrious. But there’s no shame in buying the boxed stuff from the store, either. Keep one or two of the quart-size terra packs for making rice or quinoa with a little extra flavor, and then freeze any unused liquid in Tupperware. If you find you usually can’t get through a whole quart-sized box at once, buy the eight-ounce cans, instead.
7. Beans (Canned and Dry)
Dry beans—of whatever variety you’re likely to actually make—are one of the cheapest ways to make sure that you always have something to make for dinner in a pinch, or during a week when you’ve overspent on Seamless. Don’t let dry beans hang around for too long, though, because super old beans will either take forever to cook, or just never cook all the way through. They’ll be toothsome, and not in a good way, no matter how long you boil them. Canned beans are a little more expensive, but they’re a lifesaver more often than not and cut down on your cooking time even further.
8. Canned Fish—Tuna, Anchovies, Sardines
Keeping a few cans of tuna hanging around is ideal for being able to throw together a tuna salad sandwich, or tossing some in your salad or grain bowl, when other proteins are too expensive or, frankly, are just going to take too long to cook. Anchovies are a sneaky, inexpensive way to infuse a variety of dishes, from salads to sauces, with a punch of umami—or just pop ‘em on a cracker as a snack. (Get the re-sealable jars you can keep in the fridge if you don’t think you’ll use a whole tin at once.) Sardines function the same. Throw ‘em on some toast with pickled onions for a simple sandwich, or into a salad for a quick work lunch.
9. Briny Things—Capers, Olives, Pickles
Kosher dill pickle spears are, on their own, excellent snacks. Other briny, savory things—like capers and olives and cornichons—can be bought in small quantities in re-sealable jars you can keep in the fridge for any number of applications—in salads, sauces to put on your protein of choice, or throwing on a cheese plate if you’re having friends over for an appetizer that doesn’t need a whole lot of thought.
10. Hot Sauce
Whatever your hot sauce/chili paste of choice is—Tabasco? Sriracha? Tapatío? Gochujang?—always make sure you stay stocked up. Sure, every hot sauce has its own flavor and use and they’re certainly not interchangeable by any means, but this is your pantry. If you know you’re never going to touch a bottle of Frank’s Red Hot, but you quite literally keep a bottle of Cholula in your bag, make sure you never run out.
11. Spices
Do not go out and buy a full spice rack set with dozens of little vials of spices you will never use, pleasedearsweetbabyJesusdon’tdoit. 12. Canned Tomatoes

If you feel like it, having a can of pureed tomato on your shelf can come in handy, too, but most other varieties of canned tomatoes you’ll see in the grocery store are really just there for convenience. You can always chop or dice a can of whole peeled tomatoes yourself and save a few pennies.
13. Pasta + Noodles
Having a few boxes of basic dried pasta—egg noodles, rice noodles, wheat pasta, whatever—hanging around means the foundation for any number of meals is always waiting for you.
14. Baking Essentials—Flour, Sugar, Baking Powder, Baking Soda, Vegetable Oil
Even if you don’t plan on doing a whole lot of from-scratch baking, a well-stocked pantry ought to have at least a small amount of all-purpose flour, white granulated sugar, baking powder and baking soda. Hit list for the day: Explore Bristol Harbourside SS Great Britain
Waking very bleary eyed at 8 a.m. 24 hours after leaving my home in Cornwall I headed outside to a bench on Bristol Harbourside and contemplated the previous day’s events where Easyjet had cancelled my flight to Prague. I was annoyed enough at having the weekend away cancelled but even more so that the trip was a gift for my upcoming birthday the next day.
Adding further to my crossness was that the flight had been cancelled only after sitting on the plane from 6 to 9.30 p.m., followed by the additional kick in the teeth of having to wait for a hotel until 2.30 a.m.
Feeling too tired to drag back to Bristol Airport then drive back to Cornwall I chose to book another night at The Bristol Hotel to recover a little & try to make something out of the weekend.
After resting, freshening up & eating a lovely breakfast I headed out at noon for a wonder around Bristol Harbourside where the lovely hotel was located.
My first few minutes of roaming took me through a very nice square & out onto another waterside section with a yummy looking burger place & cider stall. Deciding I was too full from breakfast for food or a drink I headed back round towards the top of the harbour.
The area was alive with a selection of outdoor food stalls, live music & children playing on the waterfall steps. Bars, restaurants & other street vendors lined the water to one side.
After walking for a while watching all there was to see, a glass of wine seemed like the perfect way to cool down & grab a little more rest.
Walking further along with waterfront, stopping to share a sandwich along the way & chat with a very interesting Dutchman filled the distance nicely before ending at the water crossing ferry for SS Great Britain.
Tickets purchased at £16.50 per person (open for 1 year) I headed in to see the vessel & Isambard Kingdom Brunell’s screw propeller that had never been seen before on ocean-going ships at that time.
SS Great Britain sits in a dry dock which has a water holding glass structure hugging its plimsoll line. This glass structure serves the purpose of creating an air tight seal to the hull below preventing further deterioration of the steel skin.
Entrance onto the ship which first went to sea in 1843 is gained via a museum area where history of the vessel can be learned; other things you can do are try on period costumes & collect your boarding card.
Once upon the deck, it’s possible to get harnessed up & climb the rigging – not something for me being a scardy kat when it comes to heights but there seemed to be plenty of people enjoying talking part.
Stepping down into the ships accommodation is where I found the visit to become I interesting.
Cabins & accommodation areas are laid out as they would have been when the vessel was actively being used.
Berths lining the cabin walls were not much wider than a shelf making me wonder how a person could have fitted in never mind managed to stay in whilst at sea.
During my walk around I also visited the ships doctor then the cook whose dishes looked very tempting with the exception of a plattered sheeps head.
Heading back toward the hotel I stopped for a chilled glass of wine, by time time I’d been invited to join a local Bristolian couple one wine turned into two. With the evening driving in it was time to say bye & nip back to the hotel for a freshen-up.
Suitably showered & changed it was time to hit Bristol’s Harbourside at night.
The night-time play area was alive with al fresco drinkers, buskers playing & partiers joining in to dance & sing. DJ’s in bars belted out a mix of vibrant music & cocktails were being enjoyed at every turn.
Za Za Bazar became the choice of dinner venue, partly because I was still tired & didn’t want to walk far & partly because I couldn’t decide what to eat. Za Za has international buffet zones so I could be as indecisive as I wanted whilst remaining under one roof. Table booking made for 9 p.m. there was time to begin a glass of wine in their bar downstairs before eating.
Dinner table gained, first stop was the Chinese buffet stall & second stop was made there too come to think of it. I had 2 small dishes of food including sweet & sour chicken, rice, steamed vegetables & hot chicken. The second plate had a little dim sum along with fried starters.
Already feeling full I went back & took teaspoon size selections from most of he curries & chutneys accompanied by a small amount of rice & piece of naan bread.
Despite not having eaten a lot of was absolutely stuffed but couldn’t resist a thin slice of the chocolate tart I’d spotted earlier.
Now feeling full as a barrel I headed round toward Small Bar which I’d spotted earlier that day & ended the evening with another cool glass of wine before heading back to the hotel just after midnight & was wished happy birthday before getting some much needed sleep.
As a footnote to this blog, I have to say since my arrival to The Bristol Hotel at 2.30 a.m. to the moment I left at noon on 3rd June – the staff couldn’t have have been more friendly & accommodating. They gave the second night’s accommodation at a greatly reduced rate out of sympathy for having the weekends plans ruined.
The combination of exceedingly comfortable hotel, their lovely staff & Bristol’s Harbourside location bought a pleasant rescue to a failed weekend & heart warming start to my Birthday.
