As someone who has steadily kept up on almost all Watcher shows and side projects, this backlash really does come down to how out of touch the guys have become, even before making Friday’s announcement.
Ryan and Shane (certainly the biggest draw to the channel) got their start with lower-brow, boyish humor and riffing off each other. Can’t forget the capitalism-critical and “power to the underdog” attitude that resonated with so many fans early on either. Now though, if you watch/listen to Pod Watcher, it’s hard to overlook just how unrelatable they’ve become in recent years. Which is whatever—it’s not like we only consume media in order to intimately relate to hosts/characters—but it does mean they’ve lost something integral from the charm that netted them their initial success.
To add. If you watched their latest season of Too Many Spirits, they weren’t even funny, just trashed and off-putting, lol. Frat-style drinking by a backyard pool and Ryan overhand throwing bones at a neighbor’s dog for barking.
Maybe not as bad for Shane, but the egos have really grown uncomfortably outsized. And at some point I got tired of watching videos based around lavish over-indulgence. Even if Steven’s videos cost less to produce than Ghost Files (I assume), they clearly rub viewers the wrong way on principle alone.
All in all, and not to minimize their hard work in getting out the content that they do, I think the Watcher guys should’ve been much more careful in considering this move and its rollout.
For years, I’ve maintained a Patreon subscription to a separate and unrelated funny-guy trio (for the same monthly price Watcher Streaming is now asking). However. The group I subscribe to is more than situationally-funny-sometimes, and always come across as grounded, emotionally intelligent, and likable people. Which makes me want to see them succeed and help how I can (though I would still be able to access 95% of their content even without subscribing).
So yeah, idk. Steven Lim driving a Tesla and wanting a second one or whatever is kind of just the tip of the iceberg.

OK, so far so good. Nice to hear from Joel after six months of near-silence. Things are going really well? That’s good news! You’re going into the studio Monday? Well, I guessed that from the high level Season 11 backers being invited to have set visits at their expense a few months ago talking about how excited they were for next week. I hope they have lots of fun.
Tumblr media
I get that secrecy is very important to you, Joel. Not necessarily because of having everything be a big surprise for the fans, but maybe a little bit because you don’t have to listen to any questions about what you’re doing when nobody knows what you’re doing.
No, certainly you don’t want to make shows by committee, because again that involves answering questions and as you’ve stated in numerous interviews, the creative process can’t be questioned. You can’t explain why something is funny, after all. I’m going to believe you when you say you took suggestions from the fans seriously, but I question which of those fans they are. Are they the fans that have hundreds of dollars to meet you at VIP events and premieres, or the ones with thousands of dollars to get invited to set visits in secret? Jonah has tweeted that he (they?) pretty much doesn’t bother to read comments, so I wonder how much the feedback is filtered before it reaches you? Do you read the hundred of thousands of comments or do you rely on others to tell you what they said? I suppose I shouldn’t ask questions like that. I don’t understand creativity, I guess. But you’re welcome, anyway.
Tumblr media
Hmmm. Suddenly there’s a whole lot about binge-watching that really hasn’t been a point of previous updates or interviews. “How to tweak the Forrester experiments...”...to the way Netflix’s viewing model works. Hmmm. Given the next paragraph talking about new viewers not giving the show a chance because of the length, it sounds like Season 12 failed to get the viewership metrics Netflix wanted to see. Fewer new, unique viewers and more people who were playing the show on repeat. Then we hit the interesting part. The “concept” of the season will be different.
What concept? The concept where Kinga is continuing her family’s experiment to gain their approval? The concept where Kinga was a reluctant mad scientist -in-training? The concept where the point of the experiments was to sell out to Disney for big money? The concept where the point was to blow up the MST3K brand and make it a household name? All of these are concepts Joel said were major parts of last season. This is intriguing...what direction will Season 12 take, and how will it get there? How will it be “warped” (read: totally changed) and “written to encourage binge watching”? Well, the encourage binge watching part hints very strongly at a continuing storyline, where each episode has to be seen in order to make sense and you have to watch all of them to understand what’s going on.
Will the same fans who dislike Season 8 because Sci-Fi forced a storyline onto a show that didn’t need it dislike Season 12 because Netflix is forcing changes to a show that doesn’t need them?
Yup, that’s what this section of the update is doing, and in all sincerity credit to Joel for putting the spin on it he is. This is Covering Your Ass 101. Without saying it explicitly, Joel has told the fans that Netflix is behind the changes to Season 12, and that you can blame the dreaded “Executive Meddling” instead of him if you don’t like the result. And it’s working! So far what most people are focusing on is the six episodes part, and the comments make it clear they believe it Netflix’s fault for only funding six episodes because they don’t support or believe in the show. Well, if fans expected more than 10 episodes tops from a Netflix season that’s unrealistic wishing. I personally thought between 8 and 10, but six isn’t out of line. Focusing on the amount of episodes right now is the only thing concrete most fans have, unless they’re willing to do the deeper analysis. And honestly, we don’t know if Netflix said you’re only doing six episodes, or if Joel is only making six episodes because that’s all he can get out of the funds he was given. (The only behind the scenes info I have on this is a rumor from someone who allegedly has a friend at Netflix that the negotiations did NOT go smoothly last year between Official MST3K and Netflix, and that boy! Season 12 is VERY important, make or break time.) As for getting the season out more quickly because it’s shorter, I’ll take that at face value, but with the knowledge that Joel suffers from terminal lateness in pretty much everything he’s involved in. It’s not out of line to think they put some strict deadlines into the contract. It certainly doesn’t promise, as some fans have been quick to latch onto, that future seasons of MST3K will be released once or even twice a year.
Tumblr media
14 episodes was a lot of episodes. It would be really nice if you have at least the same amount of studio time, maybe even more, to shoot 6 episodes worth of content instead of 14. I hope the increased focus results in a show that addresses the problems and criticisms the fans brought up about Season 11. But someday would you let the fans in on what the whole picture is, too?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hoo-boy. I talked about this yesterday, so I’m not going to rehash it here. But again, the spin is dizzying. “We’re going to offer you a chance to give us money (for no specified reason) because you guys WANTED to have a chance to give us more money!” Seriously? That’s going to work? Well, yeah, of course it’s going to work. There’s a huge chunk of the fanbase that has plenty of disposable income to throw at Joel because he makes them feel all fuzzy warm inside or something. Just look at how the elite backers are treated compared to the rest of the fanbase. Money determines your worth now as an MST3K fan, and no, I’m not the only person out there who’s noticed.
Again, you don’t ask for money unless you need money for something. I’ll be a lot more forgiving of Joel, and might even apologize for jumping to conclusions, if the rewards offered to the customers are reasonably priced. After all, we don’t have to fund a new season this time, because it’s been funded by Netflix. So you don’t need to ask for $100 for a six episode season box set or $75 bucks for a tote bag or $7500 for a bot puppet now, right?
Right?
(This is my inner bitter bitch speaking, but remember how I complained we only hear from Joel in the past year when he’s trying to sell the fans something? When he’s asking for money? Hmmm.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey, you know, we screwed up fulfilling the reward from the last fundraiser big time, so much so that it’s over two and a half years later and we have NO IDEA when the coffee table book is going to get released, and we have NO IDEA why some of you didn’t get the stuff you paid for, and we have NO IDEA why any of the screw ups happened (or at least we’re not going to tell you), but give us more of your money, because even though we’re going to do things pretty much the same way with a lot fewer people, you can trust us that everything will go perfectly this time. (But don’t expect us to lower the prices any. We couldn’t do that. Even though we don’t need the money. At all. Nope, nothing to see here.) Anyway, that’s all icky business stuff so I don’t care about it. I don’t know why you people are so concerned over not getting what you paid for and were promised, anyway. Can you just finish it up for once and for all so we can move on and forget this happened?
Tumblr media
You have so much more. Like all that behind-the-scenes stuff you promised to share April 14, 2017. I really can’t wait to see that, Joel. No, I can’t wait, because I’ve given up all hope of you meaning anything you say. This whole update is one of the greatest exercises in conveying intended meanings without actually saying anything that one can be pinned down on I’ve ever seen. It’s a masterpiece of laying groundwork, shifting blame, and ass-covering. No wonder it took months to come out with this.
TL;DR:  "I loved it! It was much better than Cats! I'm going to see it again and again!"

The Untameable by Guillermo Arriaga
Tumblr media
The Untameable
By Guillermo Arriaga
Translated by Frank Wynne & Jesse Mendez Sayer
MacLehose Press, Quercus
Guillermo Arriaga is a Mexican author, screenwriter, director and producer whose previous books have been translated into 18 languages. I awaited the release of The Untameable with high anticipation as it is Arriaga's first novel since he rose to prominence as a screenwriter on the Oscar nominated Babel, 21 Grams and the BAFTA winning Amores Perros. Seeing the latter movie upon its release really was my first insight into Mexican life; the clever interplay between three different story lines which are brought together by a car crash remained very vivid for me. By chance I actually re-watched Amores Perros shortly before hearing of this book.
Tumblr media
The Untameable is an epic read which clocks in at just over 700 pages and alternates between two storylines. The primary focus is upon teenager Juan Guillermo who lives within one of the lower middle class barrios of Mexico City in the 1960s. The second is the tale of an Inuktitut hunter named Amaruq who starts tracking a wolf in Yukon in the far north west of Canada in an initially undeterminable time. The book also features a series of short passages relating to various historic events and folk stories from around the world the purpose of which later become clear to the reader.
The English translation of The Untameable has been completed primarily by esteemed translator Frank Wynne who has translated many outstanding works from Spanish and French. These include The Blue Hour by Alonso Cueto (shortlisted for the 2013 Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize), The Siege by Arturo Pérez-Reverte and all translated titles by Pierre Lamaitre. As is the case for those novels the translation is flawless and the language always fresh. Arriaga’s talants as a screen writer enhance his storytelling which is vividly told, leaving a very strong impression of the key characters and their surroundings
Juan is the first person narrator of his part of the story and we join him at the age of 13 during a hot Mexican summer living at home with his family. This consists of his parents, grandmother, elder brother of 6 years Carlos and their pets, a brindle boxer called King and their Australian parakeets Whisky and Vodka. No sooner do we have a chance to visualise his family setting, than we are ominously informed that he will the only one to remain alive over the next 4 years. Tragically the first to go will be Carlos who we learn will be murdered.
The Untameable is marketed as a coming of age novel which is partly true but it is also so much more. There is an obvious crime, in fact multiple crimes, it’s part a historic novel, part romance and it’s also a tale of long awaited revenge. From the storylines in Yukon it is also a travel adventure. Little wonder that renowned Colombian writer Santiago Gamboa calls The Untameable one of the best books he has read. Juan’s story is always absorbing as it builds to the details that scarred him most, his desire for retribution and atone for his own regrets while the story from Yukon gradually evolves bringing new components to the book which only link at the conclusion.
Tumblr media
Juan tells us his story on a mainly reflective basis. We learn how his life was saved through blood transfusions and about his experiences at a private school which his parents could barely pay for. An early injustice he faced is when he is expelled yet a wealthier child is not. It is just the start of an examination of the inequality and misfortune that will tarnish the experiences of Juan and the lives of his family. His older brother Carlos is the most enterprising family member in tough economic conditions. Having received a chinchilla as a birthday present starts to breed them for their fur. There could be scenes that some readers may find upsetting in respect of the treatment of the chinchillas and local stray cats, also in Canada where some animals are trapped. However I would state that these are not intentionally graphic. I interpret these being shown as part of methods to develop and preserve the protagonists livelihood rather than to needlessly harm. The brothers have refused requests to put their dog into dog fighting for financial gain so there are no scenes like viewers may recall from in Amores Perros.
A lot of the interaction with neighbours comes from the boys moving from rooftop to rooftop. While Juan and many of the other local boys were raised without a strong religious faith, another group known as “The Good Boys” follow their twisted interpretation of the bible. Led by Humberto they try to recruit other younger boys and preach to Juan and his friends for a while. Our narrator realises the contradictory nature of their beliefs:
"On the one hand everything that happened was the result of Divine Will: “God willed it so” on the other hand the Devil was lurking everywhere, waiting for the opportunity to tempt Man and lead him from the path of righteousness.”
Effectively this group are “an army in training”, fundamentalists who with the consent of the local priest dispatch punishment to those who are Jewish, Communist or are believed to carry out immoral behaviours such as homosexuality. They attempt to draw Juan and his friends into what is effectively a clandestine death squad. Juan is in denial of their true harm at first as he is far more interested in his discoveries of William Faulkner, Jimi Hendrix and his first regular sexual experiences.
We also learn of the corrupt policeman Zurita. The captain is more concerned with getting a cut from illegal activities than stopping them. As Carlos’ businesses expands into other areas and he continually refuses to cooperate with Zurita, his enterprise eventually makes him a target for The Good Boys. Before we learning of the events that are to unfold Juan uses biblical images to describe how his life is about to change: “then came the plaque of destruction, and the locusts of death devoured everything in their path.”
While Carlos is trying to keep ahead of his enemies by monitoring unknown cars and finding regular hiding places, there is also a battle of wits on the Canadian tundra between Amaruq and a giant grey wolf he calls Nujuaqtutuq. The beast is luring him further northwards where the chances of both finding food are slimmer. Amaruq is under a belief this particular animal is one his grandfather warned him about:
"Of all the wolves you will see in your life, one alone will be your master.”
The descriptions of the landscape in the Canadian scenes are as detailed of those in Mexico City so that you can virtually visualize them. This is a key feature of this book, the details of the settings are always vividly relayed without detracting from the narrative of the story.
The strength of the characterisations particularly mark this book for distinction. Juan sustains our support as the main protagonist throughout his troubles. His grief for the accumulated loss of family members is palpable and his reactions feel realistic. There are very lifelike stumbling blocks at the start of his romance with the once promiscuous Chelo as they borh try to adapt to the terrible circumstances that life has thrown at him. He receives a sympathetic role model after meeting Alives as they both belong to the “community of orphans.” Juan is protective of the family pets and even adopts the fearsome Colmillo who could not be tamed by his owners. Humberto is almost Juan’s polar opposite but there is enough given about his own background to develop him as a convincing character. In this barrio in late 1960s Mexico City it is those that portray themselves as good are those who carry out the most evil of acts. We see Juan wrestles with his conscience and desire for a settled life with Chelo against his determination to exact revenge; knowing that there will be consequences for him. He would be breaking an unwritten rule: “victims could not be aggressors, and if they did, they were declaring war.”
Tumblr media
The Untameable is an exceptional novel. It addresses sudden bereavements and attempts at reconciling these during adolescence, it tackles themes of societal inequality and corruption, the complete lack of morality in some locally organised religious groups and more widely the concept of vengeance. It is a fascinating tale with contrasting textures, writing styles and literary references. Its length should not be a deterrence due to the multiple storylines, timeframes and themes within the story. If any of these intrigue you then I would urge you to read The Untameable. Ultimately this is a captivating chronical of one brave boy’s struggles against almost unsurmountable challenges which will hook you in, immerse and captivate you right until the end.

With technology constantly evolving and internet speeds reaching the phase they’re in today it became evident that digital economy would topple the traditional market by a lot and become much better for gain. Lately the digital economy is among the essential drivers of this economic growth in america and it has grown for approximately 7.2percent annually for the past decade which is a speed about 4 times faster than the GDP. The evolution of technology has also made way for most businesses to easily improve their efficiency in many areas while having lower costs.
The digital market has a Couple of advantages over the traditional one and those are:
1. Effective resource allocation – in the digital world there is an choice to acquire an algorithm which has advice about what people search on Google, what they want and how they want it and it’s much cheaper than paying people who may or may not be able to help you market your goods.
2. Location – it isn’t important where you are so long as you have an online connection and an internet presence. You may be sitting at home in your pajamas and be in a position to produce millions selling solutions or alternative products if your online store is well marketed.
3. Faster expansion of small businesses – when you get your business online it’d roughly $20-$30 to achieve an audience between 3000-4000 individuals which means it would just cost little to create your new business known to so many people out there that might be interested in your product or service.
Affiliate Marketing
Having a site or a blog that’s frequented by plenty of people it among the better things you can need to have the ability to make money online because in case you have one of those you can use it to put affiliate links and refer people to services for which you’ll earn commission. If it sounds simple it is since it’s but the tough part would be to get into a website or a blog that a great deal of people are reading. It entails working hard and setting up content frequently but as soon as you build your audience you can actually enjoy the passive income and then quit your job to work at home.
The way affiliate marketing functions is by providing commission for those products or services sold. There are a whole lot of sites which have different products and services recorded and available, and all you have to do is sign up for their site and apply to be an affiliate for a product. Once you get accepted (this usually happens really quickly ) you will find a unique link which you need to embed in you posts so that your viewers can see it and if they buy the product or service through this link you’ll get a commission for it which can be anywhere from 20% to 200% depending on the solution and the company offering it.
Make sure that you refer your readers to services and products you think are worth their trouble because if you refer them to something mediocre you might start losing your viewers and your internet income will take a hit. Do your research before applying for any agency to make sure you’re an affiliate of something great and you can proudly introduce it to your own readers.
There are numerous affiliate sites which you could register for and select from the services and products they’re offering including Rakuten Marketing, Share-a-Sale, Commission Junction, ClickBank, Impact Radius plus a lot more but you don’t have to use these websites to be an affiliate. There are many businesses that recognized the potential in offering affiliate options in their without using one of the sites above and they executed a choice in which you handle the company directly.
Overall, affiliate marketing is certainly the best way to generate money online and develop your passive income which will permit you quit your day job and work from home and finally pay people to work for you so that you can enjoy your daily life and spend your time as you see fit.
ECommerce Business
ECommerce is a really fast growing business that people can utilize to make the most of the rise of digital market and make money online. This method also involves working from home and it may be turned into a passive revenue stream that is only going to need maintaining rather than constant working and enormous work.
The design for eCommerce businesses begins picking a niche and character. As soon as you’ve done that you’ll require a website on which you’ll be able to make your online store and pick something which you believe will sell well and have the highest profit margin. It has to be within the niche you chose and match the character you opted to represent. It is best to begin with just one product as opposed to many because it may get cluttered when the orders start coming and you can not cover the costs right away. There could be issues with returns and shipping that’s really hard for newly made websites. As soon as you’ve established a fantastic profit margin for one product you may expand and find out what is selling like crazy so you can place this up on your own page for your visitors to purchase.
It’s pretty simple model but the eCommerce marketplace today is extremely competitive and it’s not easy to compete with websites which are already well recognized and trusted by customers. But, it is still one of the simplest and most effective ways to make real income online using the growth of digital market.
Coaching and Consulting
Make the Most of The Many Apps Available
Apps that are on your smart devices aren’t only for fun and games. To discover a consulting or a training job you just have to search their database of jobs posted and see if there’s anything available right now. You might even try other similar apps rather than just stick to the one.
Utilize Money Making Websites
One of the better ways to join the electronic market and make money online is to utilize the websites available to everybody for making active and passive income. A few of the websites that are installed can be used to sell digital products like designs for apparel but may also be utilized for consulting and coaching services. Basically the sites we’re putting in this class are those that focus their attention on long term working relationships with freelancers in various market areas including photography, layout, content generation, online marketing, consulting and coaching. Some of the sites to be found on the internet will be the next
Upwork
An amazing market for freelancers to find a part time or even a complete time job. It’s great for selling any kind of digital service you could imagine. The very best thing is that what you need for this website is to be good at everything you do. No need for creating your own website or a unique merchant accounts. If your ceremony is top-notch along with your knowledge in the field you are working in is exemplary you’ve got nothing to be concerned about. The only downside might be that there is a lot of competition and you’ll have to”fight” to find a job but other than that it’s an awesome place you may earn money online that can easily become passive income.
Fiverr
Another similar website to Upwork but with this one you are posting everything you could do to help a certain amount while the minimal amount is $5. So if you’re searching for training clients you can post a gig that will let people know you are available for training sessions for an x quantity of money and individuals that are looking for something like that will be able to see your gig and hire one to be their coach. Following is a link where you can sign up for Fiverr
Conclusion
The digital market is a really fast growing economy compared to conventional one and we must all take advantage of this opportunity it gives.
The 3 easy and effective ways that we present above are those that work best for building your passive income and while online affiliate marketing is listed first and it is the ideal option, eCommerce and supplying consulting and training services are close seconds. Picking any of the three ways, or even a mixture of them all is something which everyone with a little knowledge and is ambitious should do. It’s never been easier to go on the internet and start your own small business while sitting on your sofa and work at home.

4 Reasons Transparency Is the Content Marketer`s Greatest Competitive Advantage
Since the Enron scandal turned the corporate world upside down, the word 'clear' has actually ended up being a symbol of the trustworthy, reliable, and socially responsible brand. As well as, for numerous business, it has ended up being a competitive advantage. Still, some firms have a difficult time with openness. They suggest that way too much interaction can be equally as harmful as not nearly enough communication. Nevertheless, as a material online marketer or assumed leader, can you truly admit that your prices are a little bit lower compared to the competitors due to the fact that your products may not be of the same quality? How around exactly how your firm uses large information? And also, what regarding those hard-to-answer item or service-pricing inquiries to which the only from another location brief and also concise answer is 'it depends'? In this article, I will certainly say that transparency as well as a determination to deal with the hard inquiries for your audience could be your most effective one-upmanship when it pertains to attracting viewers to your long-form material marketing campaign.
McDonald's has actually possibly been one of the most highlighted public study of the transparency discussion. Viral Facebook messages, for instance, depict the restaurant as the designer of non-food products that ought to not be ingested by any type of living organism. In one such message, for instance, McDonald's is accused of making use of plastic products as sandwich active ingredients. And also, several unwary consumers pass the blatantly imprecise information in addition to the loving objective of advising their pals and family of possible danger to their health.
So, what should McDonald's have done to fix this undesirable word-of-mouth project that was clearly out of its control? Should it have maintained quiet out of fear of getting worse the damages or should it have opened up its cooking areas, procedures, and supply chains to consumer analysis? McDonald's has actually decided to become clear, developing its 'Our Food. Your Concerns' material advertising project that shows the brand name as an open book where consumers could ask any kind of and also all concerns and expect to get an honest and precise answer. Why did McDonald's select to be clear? And, should you do the very same concerning your company's hard-to-answer or frowned on concerns? I would certainly say that there are four powerful reasons you need to be taking into consideration overall openness with your audiences.
Take control of your brand name image.
It is risk-free to state that the material advertising setting of today is dramatically different from what it was even a decade earlier. Today, consumers have at their fingertips a variety of information on every company, product, service, and also sector. Not just can they access information from the very resource it stemmed, yet, as McDonald's rapidly uncovered, they have access to numerous third-party opinion blogs as well as social media pages, much of that include little exact information. As opposed to leaving your brand name picture to the whim of rumors, take into consideration resolving those rumors by not enabling them to begin. Rumors are the item of minimal communication as well as heightened subject passion. With respect to McDonald's Canada, consumers were very thinking about what they were placing in their bodies yet were not transparently offered the information they looked for. So, they began to hypothesize as well as, inevitably, make up the info themselves.
The result has actually been a brand reputation nightmare for McDonald's- one that might have been avoided if consumers were just provided the responses prior to rumors created a detrimentally viral advertising campaign for the firm. In its clear project, nevertheless, McDonald's Canada is taking control of its brand name image. As an outcome of its transparency-centered content marketing campaign, it efficiently supplies solution to 350-450 customer questions a day on Facebook and twitter, responses that would likely have actually been provided with unreliable and harmful third-party details if McDonald's Canada had actually not made itself readily available to respond to consumer questions prior to they hit the rumor mill.
Create a brand name photo of credibility.
In his book, The Rate of Depend on: The One Thing that Changes Everything, Stephen M.R. Covey explains that stability, or sincerity, is among the 4 parts of trustworthiness. With stability, even a made use of car salesperson can come to be a trusted professional in his field. Integrity involves openly showing that what you claim regarding your brand is exactly what is really occurring behind the scenes. CarMax completed this by certifying its automobiles based upon its 125+ factor assessment, prohibiting rate bargaining, and also ensuring every acquisition with a five-day, money-back assurance. Furthermore, all sales agents are paid the exact same with dealt with compensations, permitting customers to be certain no concealed agenda is driving a sales rep's interests in offering a vehicle. As opposed to questionable and also deceptive prices methods as well as concealed programs, CarMax made it easy for clients plainly to gain the information they needed by attending to on its site also forbidden sector topics such as compensation pay ranges as well as vehicle histories.
Its material advertising strolls its viewers with the methods which automobiles are picked available and its certifying process, that is, full disclosure pertaining to all of its sale automobiles. In attending to the questions consumers are asking, the company placements itself a specialist with its material instead of a press marketing expert. And also, while other pre-owned vehicle dealers continued to be in the shadows with hidden schedules and just 'as-needed' car details, CarMax's integrity-driven and also clear content marketing project became its competitive benefit as consumers crowded to a brand name they might trust.
Transparency shows experience, resulting in relying on customer partnerships.
In his write-up, "The Power of Transparent Advertising and marketing to Rock Your Business in 2012 and Beyond," Marcus Sheridan connects his story. He composes that in 2008, his firm was on the edge of insolvency. He succeeded in pulling his company up by its bootstraps with one just competitive side that he used in his material advertising campaign:
Address every inquiry we have actually ever before listened to from our customers.
Now, this may sound like a basic and also common method that could not potentially equate to an engaging competitive edge. Surely, various other business had actually welcomed the idea of fulfilling their customers' requirements in this manner in which. But, Sharidan located that this was not the case. In enhancement, he found that, with this brand-new dedication to openness, he was able to demonstrate his expertise, developing a brand name photo of skilled solution offerings that outshone his competitors.
For example, in its short article, "How Much Does a Fiberglass Pool Expense," the firm attended to the forbidden topic of product prices in an industry understood for often excessive-appearing purchase as well as installment expenses. It would certainly appear this high-cost admission would certainly avert clients. The opposite happened. Prospective clients easily discovered the brand name as its SEO rankings took off. This is exactly what consumers desired to understand as well as, as a result, for exactly what they most looked. And also, in creating a clear brand photo in a sector where defeating around the shrub prevailed technique, the brand name came to be respected as well as trusted over its rivals. It dared to level. Suffice to state, its customers and target market valued the motion: this blog message alone received 124,000 web page sights and also 1,529 inbound links.
Through openness, you reveal you care.
Genuineness informs your readers that you prefer to aid them make the most effective choice for them compared to route them to buy an item from you. CarMax has actually provided an influential sales-model in its sector because, as it has actually ended up being an open publication of information for its consumers, it has shown that, though the used car industry is well-known for self-centered and often shady sales methods, the business cares way too much about its client's interests to participate in such actions. In its material marketing project, the firm clarifies just how its sales agents are paid and specifically the sorts of damages that do and do not pass its inspection procedure before being automobiles are permitted on the sale's floor. Not normally talked about in the made use of car market, in doing so, CarMax helps its target market come to the conclusion that the company cares much more about fulfilling their needs than making a profit.
Put merely, its material marketing project serves to inform customers that the business functions with each client as a team to locate and satisfy customer needs, therefore courting clients away from rivals that may just have demonstrated a system of self-indulgent motives via marketing projects that additionally push customers to approach their brands with suspicion.
I 'd love to realise: just what is hindering you from being transparent with your readers?

“Say It Nicer”: Why Many Questions Remain After The Hunter Biden Interview
Tumblr media
Screengrab
Below is my column on the ABC interview with Hunter Biden. The interview preceded his father’s debate that day, but former Vice President Joe Biden awkwardly declined to address the issue. As I discussed in another column, there remains a media mantra that there is “no evidence of wrongdoing by Joe or Hunter Biden.” That dismisses the long objections by many of us that these lucrative jobs and contracts for spouses and children are part of an unethical and corrupt practice. Most of us view what Hunter did as clearly “wrong” but the media has adopted a narrow focus on whether criminal charges have been brought as opposed to whether the Ukraine deal was a raw and obvious form of influence peddling.
Here is the column:
“Say it nicer.” No words better sum up the news coverage of Hunter Biden. That instruction given from him to ABC News reporter Amy Robach came after she noted that he was “in and out of rehab” several times for dependency on drugs ranging from cocaine to crack. In fact, the media has been “saying it nicer” for weeks, telling readers and viewers there is “no finding of wrongdoing” by the son of Joe Biden while avoiding any substantive discussion of his controversial business dealings.
During the interview, Hunter Biden moved between muted apologies and indignant denials about alleged efforts to cash in on his father being vice president. The interview was galling for those critical of this common form of corruption. For three decades, I have written about the practice of giving lucrative jobs and contracts to the spouses and children of powerful politicians as a way of gaining influence in Washington.
Hunter Biden’s deals are textbook examples of how political families become rich from public service. Still, many in the media continue to repeat Joe Biden’s position that “no one has asserted my son did a single thing wrong.” That, of course, is untrue. Even if the deals did not amount to crimes, they were wrong. They have always been wrong, but both parties have always protected these deals as a dirty little secret.
Hunter Biden appeared to struggle to find his identity in explaining his foreign deals. He was asked why he accompanied his father on an official trip to China in 2013, shortly before he signed a deal with the Bank of China to manage $1.5 billion in investments. He replied, “I have traveled everywhere with my dad.” The problem is he was 43 years old at the time. He was definitely not some oversized lap child.
After admitting that he probably was given such lucrative deals because of his dad, he suggested the opposite. Pressed about his credentials to be a director of a Ukrainian energy company, he said, “I was vice chairman of the board of Amtrak for five years. I was the chairman of the board of the United Nations World Food Program. I was a lawyer for Boies Schiller Flexner, one of the most prestigious law firms in the world.”
Indeed, he was given those positions, but they raise the same concerns over whether he earned them. Hunter Biden has the prototypical resume of the progeny of the powerful in Washington. He seemed to land jobs far beyond his experience or proven skills. Most law school graduates work for six years just to make junior partner in a firm. Yet, directly out of law school in 1996, he was given a lucrative position with MBNA America, a bank that was not only a campaign contributor to his father but a business actively lobbying for lending changes in Congress. His father, then a powerful senator, supported changes that benefited the bank.
Within a couple years of graduating, Hunter Biden amazingly ascended to the position of executive vice president. He was then given a position in the Commerce Department before he became an industry lobbyist. In 2006, President Bush made him a member of the board of directors of Amtrak. No one seriously argued at the time that his resume even remotely qualified him for that position, any more than his assuming the board chairmanship of the United Nations World Food Program.
At the time, Democratic Senator Tom Carper of Delaware explained that Hunter Biden was qualified to get on the board of Amtrak because “Hunter Biden has spent a lot of time on Amtrak trains.” He was then given a position with the law firm of Boies Schiller Flexner while establishing an investment firm. Frankly, his entire resume is filled with high paying positions but few known accomplishments to justify them.
In a key exchange in the interview, Robach asked about Hunter Biden going with his father on an official trip to China. Shortly after that trip on Air Force Two, he signed a deal with Chinese businessman Jonathan Li and an investment firm worth as much as $1.5 billion in Chinese capital, including funding from the Bank of China. Robach correctly noted that President Trump is completely wrong in claiming that Hunter Biden walked away with $1.5 billion or made millions from the deal. Indeed, Hunter Biden insisted he did not made a dime on the deal.
But Robach then moved on without addressing the obvious point that Hunter Biden hoped to get a cut from a business seeking $1.5 billion. He simply failed in the effort. Saying that you failed to make a ton of money hardly gives you the ethical high ground. He also brushed over the fact that, during the official visit, he had his father take a photo with his business partner. He insisted it was a wonderful coincidence of a friend staying at the same hotel. Nor was he pressed on why, if his deal had made no money for years, he only decided to resign this month.
Hunter did admit that his deal with Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian energy company, may have shown “poor judgment” but not because it was an effort at influence peddling. Nor because he took $50,000 a month from one of the most corrupt figures in Ukraine or because he got the deal when his father controlled billions in loans and aid to Ukraine. He said, “I gave a hook to some very unethical people to act in illegal ways to try to do some harm to my father. That is where I made the mistake.”
In other words, he broke the cardinal rule of the progeny of the powerful to never allow your personal enrichments to become public controversies. Ultimately, the real impact of this controversy turns on any responsibility of Joe Biden. During his interview, Hunter Biden insisted, “I did not have any discussions with my father before or after I joined the board as it related to it, other than that brief exchange that we had.”
Robach repeated that while ignoring an obvious contraction. This is where the spin moves from nice to nonsense. The point of the original question to Joe Biden was whether he knew his son was doing business in Ukraine when the vice president dangled more than $1 billion in loans in front of the Ukrainian government. Joe Biden denied any knowledge when he said, “I have never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings.”
The Washington Post adopted this spin in its dubious “fact check” in which it acknowledged that Hunter Biden did tell his father about the deals but, since Joe Biden just told his son to be “careful,” the publication concluded that is “not much of a discussion.” However, that is not the point here. The point is that Joe Biden knew of a glaring conflict in what anyone would recognize as an obvious effort at influence peddling.
In response to this, Joe Biden has declared, “I can tell you now, if I am your next president, I am going to build on the squeaky clean transparent environment that we had in the Obama Biden White House.” That is a rather odd statement since his own son’s controversial deals in Ukraine and China occurred during that administration, as did controversial payments to the Clintons and their foundation from foreign interests. That is not exactly the model many of us have in mind. In the end, it is hard to say much of this in a “nicer” way, but the questions must be asked.

Arrow Moves To Thursdays
Woke up to this article today and my TL looked like:
Tumblr media
Arrow is moving to Thursday nights at 9 pm next fall for their sixth season. Reactions varied from chill to... not. Do I think this is a bad thing? No, I don’t.
Tumblr media
Allow me to preface this post by saying this: I’ve been talking about Arrow’s ratings and The CW network since I started this blog. Long before there was ever a ratings drop, my opinion was that The CW has a different business model than the other networks. If you cannot accept that The CW’s profitability is not based on live ratings, then this is not the blog for you. You don’t have to take my word for it. Stephen Amell confirmed it at HVFF Chicago. Mark Pedowitz has spoken about it.  I’ve done my research on this folks. They are structured differently than the Big Four. It’s just facts. (X)
Yes, I was surprised by the move mostly because I had grown complacent about Arrow on Wednesday night. Wasn’t expecting it. I am no expert, but I’m happy to share my thoughts. I’ll talk about what I like about the move. Then we’ll shift to concerns.
What I Like
The 9 pm slot
Praise Jesus! We are on at a later time. THIS IS FABULOUS. Arrow has always been a darker and grittier show, especially when you compare it to The Flash and Supergirl. A 9 pm slot loosens the grip Broadcasting Standards and Practices has on the show. It can be more violent and sexier simply because the kiddos go to bed. I sincerely hope Arrow is able to push the envelope more, even if it’s ever so slightly.
Tumblr media
Supernatural Pairing
I do not watch Supernatural, but I am THRILLED Arrow was paired with it. These shows were paired before (2015 Arrow S4/Supernatural S11) and I believe it was successful. Supernatural and Arrow have very similar demographics, so they’ve always seemed like a natural fit to me.
Honestly, how The CW pairs their shows has always been quite a head scratcher to me. Arrow and Frequency? HUH? The pairings for next year’s fall line up feel the most logical in years. The only one I’m really side eyeing is Valor after Supergirl (Really?). All the other show pairings feel similar in demographic and content, which just makes more sense to me if you are trying to maintain/build on audiences.
Supernatural is a strong show. It’s been on 12 years. It’s moved 8 times. I think if God invented an 8th day and The CW moved it there but didn’t tell a soul, the Supernatural fans would find it. This fandom is as loyal as they get. Their ratings have held pretty steady over the course of 12 seasons, which in of itself is impressive. A move is always tough on any television show, simply because your audience needs to follow it to the new night. So, I am extremely happy Arrow’s lead in is an anchor show for the network, who has already proven themselves on Thursday nights, and comes with a built in audience that is similar to Arrow’s.
Tumblr media
Thursday Night
This is primarily for selfish reasons. I teach faith formation on Wednesday nights, but I am wide open on Thursdays. So, Arrow on Thursdays just works better for my schedule. lol I can live tweet more.
Tumblr media
The Concerns
This Is Us
Yes, I am well aware that This Is Us is moving to Thursdays at 9 pm. This seemed to be the primary concern. That the live ratings mammoth that is This Is Us will send Arrow into a ratings death spiral and it will get canceled. Sigh. No. Just... no.
Tumblr media
Name one show on The CW that is in the ballpark of This Is Us numbers? Name one show on The CW that is in the live ratings ballpark of any show that airs on the Big Four? See, this is where this whole “How in holy Moses is The CW profitable?” question really starts to matter. It doesn’t matter what show The CW puts in that time slot. They’ll all get creamed. lol The CW isn’t concerned about Arrow going head to head with This Is Us. They don’t operate on a mano e mano strategy for live ratings... because they lose.
This Is Us has to prove successful on Thursday. There can be a tendency for hit pilot shows to suffer a sophomore slump in ratings. This Is Us is moving to the toughest night on television. It has the break to contend with too when NBC starts airing football. I’m not really worried about any of this. I think This Is Us will do great and kick serious ass. I’m expecting every show that goes up against it will take a live ratings hit.
Is This Is Us going to take enough of Arrow’s viewers to send it into some ratings death spiral so The CW is forced to cancel because it’s become abysmally unprofitable? Doubtful.
I do think the shows target different demos as Mark Pedowitz said. Now before you start screaming at me, “I WATCH THIS IS US AND ARROW” that’s great. So do I. I love them both. Except, I’m not a Nielson family so it doesn’t really matter that I watch both.
The CW’s demographic is primarily female. The reasons why Arrow and The Flash were so appealing to to The CW was because it allowed them to branch into the other half of the population more - the male demo. That’s who The CW needed to target for their market to grow. Now, before you start screaming at me, “WOMEN WATCH ARROW AND MEN WATCH THIS IS US” yes thank you. I am aware.  I am quite sure This Is Us will take some of Arrow’s audience, but this is not new territory for me. Blindspot was up against Arrow this year. It had to lose some audience to Blindspot given how similar the demos are. I’m not certain the demos are as different as Pedowitz claims, but he’s probably got numbers I don’t. The question is how much will This Is Us take? That is the X factor. I don’t have male/female demographics on either show, so how the shift all shakes out is unknowable.  Am I worried? NO.
As I discussed in my most recent ratings post, I don’t know what the live ratings/profitability ratio is for The CW but even with a 30% drop in ratings Arrow is nowhere near their danger zone. The Originals is averaging a .30. It’s going into Season 5. Reign was at the same average when it was renewed for a fourth and final season. We've got a long ways to go. Arrow is still the #4 performer for the network.
The CW is focused on streaming. Netflix kids. That's where they make their money. The more seasons they have to sell to Netflix the more money they get to make. This includes complete series that viewers can binge start to finish. They also want their series to hit 88-100 episodes. They aren't trying to make money off the live broadcast run. They are focused on syndication deals. Arrow has a syndication deal with TNT. This all means The CW is focused on LONGEVITY.
Even if This Is Us sends Arrow into another ratings dive – I don’t think it goes anywhere. Stephen Amell is signed for 7 seasons. I feel confident we’re going 7 folks. Whether or not we go longer remains to be seen, but I think that has a lot more to do with Stephen Amell than it does with This Is Us. If Arrow ends in S7, I'm not remotely prepared to call that a series failure. Nor should you.
The CW is trying to kill Arrow
There seems to be a concern that The CW is trying to kill Arrow by moving it to Thursday and putting it up against This Is Us.
Tumblr media
Thursday is not the night shows go to die. That would be Friday. (Jen pats Blindspot). Although, even that mentality is starting to change. I think The CW would rather move a low rated show to Friday, especially if it has a loyal fanbase and strong social media presence, instead of cancel it. Friday keeps many shows alive, which means more streaming opportunities!
I guess the thinking on this one is because Arrow suffered a 30% drop The CW wants to cancel it and this is how they push it out. Again, I disagree. This is The CW not Fox. They try to keep series going, not intentionally torpedo them.
Tumblr media
Also, Marc confirmed that their streaming is UP. So, it’s possible whatever loss Arrow is suffering in live they are making it up in streaming. The audience is just shifting. We don't have any specific numbers, but for all we know, this could be a wash. My bet is The CW is nowhere near as unhappy with Arrow's numbers as people presume they are. Especially, if their numbers are up in the medium The CW is TARGETING.
Thursday
So why is Arrow getting moved off its comfortable Wednesday night show to one of the toughest nights in TV?
The Vampire Diaries was The CW's Thursday solid 8 pm performer for years. They've always struggled to find a solid 9 pm. Nikita, The Secret Circle, Beauty and the Beast, Reign, The Originals, Riverdale – none of them cut it. Then once TVD moved to Fridays, Legends of Tomorrow failed to gain traction in TVD's old spot.  You know what's moved back and forth to Thursdays a lot over the years? SUPERNATURAL. Something I noticed - each one of these failed Thursday night shows were pretty buzzy their first season. Arrow generates buzz.
Look guys, they had to put something there. The CW doesn't have a lot of new shows this season which means one of the returning series has to move to fill up the slots. Supernatural proved successful this year on Thursdays. So, if you look at the board – Arrow makes the most sense to pair with it. Also, after 5 seasons, Arrow is still one of their strongest performing series (#4 ain't bad). I think The CW put two of the longest running series, with a loyal fan base, to a night where they've been looking for two solid performers for awhile.
I also don't think WHEN The CW schedules their shows matters as much as other networks because, you guessed it, streaming.
That said, Arrow did suffer a 30% drop this year. That's not insignificant. Meanwhile, Supernatural had a minimal drop. Maybe the time has come for Arrow to stop being the lead in series and get a little support. I'm okay with that. Its certainly carried their own weight.
Why not just put Supernatural on Wednesday like they did last year? Well, that still leaves Thursday as wildly problematic, but maybe the answer is Fox? Fox went with soapier programming this year on Wednesday with Empire and Star. So, I think The CW answered with Riverdale and The Dynasty reboot. That’s that's just a guess though. I also think they wanted a new night for Riverdale. They seem invested in that series, the network just made an Archie comics deal, and probably wanted to find a more successful night for it than Thursday. Supergirl is a solid Monday performer. The Flash/LOT pairing is working great on Tuesday. That leaves Wednesday. And... Arrow suffered a drop. The door was open.
Supernatural makes a bad lead in
Ehh... I just disagree with this. 12 years is a long time and I don't have enough knowledge about Supernatural. I certainly understand if fans prefer Supernatural at 9 pm, but I think it has switched between 8 and 9 just as much as it has moved nights. I think Riverdale was sighted as this example. Honestly, I think that has more to do with my previous complaint about The CW's penchant for terrible pairing. What on earth do Riverdale and Supernatural have in common? I’m not surprised the audience didn’t carry over. I don't lay the blame at Supernatural's door. I stand by my positives for Supernatural being the lead in.
The Crossover
This move breaks up the crossover. Honestly, I don’t think a network can plan their entire schedule around one episode a year. Also, I think the fanbases for the DC shows are pretty loyal. They’ll follow the crossover conclusion to Arrow on Thursday night. I don’t see a day drastically changing numbers, but I guess we’ll see. Even still, one episode a season does not make.
I'm sure I've missed other concerns, but I took my best shot. My advice would be to stop worrying about Arrow's cancellation and just enjoy the show - no matter what night it is on.

Environmental Evaluation
For this Brief we had to take image of someone in the natural Environment. For this brief I decided to shoot someone that is working straight through the pandemic. At first thought I was going to shoot my mum as she works for the NHS so she has to work through it no matter what, I then realised this would not be possible due to strict protocol. I then decided to shoot my boss as he as well as me have been working right through the pandemic, and I also believe he has a very distinct look and wanted to try and capture his personality within the images.
I enjoyed shooting the images In the locations as I found it challenging to get the lighting right as on the days where I was shooting over cast was very frequent. I also really enjoy making the zine as this was something that was new to me and I really like the way I can display my images through this as it makes them relate to each other more. I believe I will use the Zine again to display my work in the future.
A new technique that I learned would be creating the Zine. I also learned how to make the model fell comfortable during the shoot by picking when he wanted the shoots to be done as he is very busy 7 days a week with owning two shops. I also shot the images while he was working for most of the shoots so I wasn't taking up his very little spare time.
One technique I would like to develop further is making the model feel relaxed as I think this is very important as it will make the final image a lot more interesting and potentially stronger. By not having this it will make the image stand out less.
One photographer that I researched throughout this project was Arnold Newman. I gained a lot of inspiration for looking at his fantastic work of images over the years. Within in each of his images it tells a story about the subject that could be interoperated differently by someone else's pair of eyes which is what I love about his images the most. I also researched Sara Facio’s work who also inspired my images.
Arnold Newman inspired me to try and capture what there occupation is without being too obvious so the viewer second guesses what it is. Sara Facio also inspired me to have strong composition within my images as it can make the image standout a lot more.
The most successful part of this project I feel was the zine as I feel like this made the project as it made the images more relatable with the way they were displayed. The Zine created an average day for my boss from opening the shop and cashing up at night. Making the Zine did take a while as the website was really slow but it was worth it to display the images like that.
One problem that I encountered during this project was the original shoot that I planned in the cash and carry had to be change due to them not being happy about taking photos within, to over come this I shot outside the cash and carry of him loading the van. This effected my final images by being in a different setting.
If I was given the chance to do this project again I would shoot inside the shop. The reason that this was not possible at the time is because I would not be able to socially distance within the stores as they were getting renovated at the time.
One technical issue I had was getting the camera to focus when it was raining ad the camera was trying to focus on the rain so I used manual focus to prevent this from happening.
If I was to do this project again I would start by planning shoots within the store and include images from outside the store similar to the ones I have already shot. I would also plan to shoot him coming in with the papers as this is something he does every morning.

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki Responsibility Push Angers PewDiePie
(Bloomberg) –YouTube spent 2019 answering critics with some of the most drastic changes in its 15-year history. With each step, it gave those activists, regulators and lawmakers more reasons to attack its free-wheeling, user-generated business model.
Susan Wojcicki, YouTube’s chief executive officer, announced her goals in April. “My top priority,” she wrote, “is responsibility.” Her company spent the year trying to traverse an almost impossible tightrope: nurture a growing community of demanding creators, while pledging to police troubling videos and protect millions of underage users who officially shouldn’t even be watching. The efforts pleased almost no one and highlighted an existential quandary. Every time YouTube tries to fix something, the company, an arm of Alphabet Inc.’s Google, risks losing the neutrality that it needs to thrive.
“They know that every time they are successful catching problematic content or removing it, this just raises expectations,” said Mike Godwin, a senior fellow at think tank R Street Institute and a trustee of the Internet Society. “It’s a never-ending cycle of increasing demands for these dominant platforms to operate fairly.”
As 2020 begins, the largest online video service is being dragged deeper into political fights over privacy, copyright and content moderation. In response, YouTube is trying to preserve the sanctity of its status as an online platform with little liability for what happens on its site. Instead, that burden is increasingly falling on the shoulders of regulators, video creators and other partners.
Nowhere is that more evident than YouTube’s approach to kids. A landmark privacy settlement this year with the Federal Trade Commission is forcing YouTube to split its massive site in two. Every clip, starting in January, must be designated as “made for kids” or not. The overhaul puts billions of ad dollars at stake and has sparked panic among creators, who also now face new legal risk. The company isn’t offering creators legal advice or ways to salvage their businesses. It isn’t even defining what a “made for kids” video is on YouTube — and has argued to the government that it shouldn’t have to.
“Creators will make those decisions themselves,” Wojcicki said last week. “Creators know their content best.”
YouTube privately considered taking more control. Earlier this year, it assembled a team of more than 40 employees to brace for the FTC decision. The team was code-named Crosswalk — as in a way to guide kids across YouTube’s chaotic streets. Among its proposals was a radical one, at least by the standards of Silicon Valley: YouTube would screen every video aimed at kids under the age of 8 in its YouTube Kids app, ensuring that no untoward content crept into the feed of millions of tots around the world. A press release was even drafted in which Wojcicki said professional moderators would check each clip, according to people familiar with the plans. Yet at the last minute, the CEO and her top deputies ditched the plan, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations.
The rationale was clear to some at YouTube, one person involved in the project recalled. Hand-picking videos, even for kids, made YouTube look too much like a media company, not a neutral platform. A YouTube spokeswoman denied the idea was turned down because it put the company in charge of programming, but she declined to comment further on the decision. In a recent interview, Wojcicki made it clear that her content-moderation push only goes so far, telling CBS News that even being liable for video recommendations would destroy the essence of the service.
“If we were held liable for every single piece of content that we recommended, we would have to review it,” she said. “That would mean there would be a much smaller set of information that people would be finding. Much, much smaller.”
YouTube’s balancing act between media publisher or hands-off internet bulletin board has sparked intense debate internally. For some business partners and employees, this year’s decisions leaves them with the impression that the company is unable to take a serious stand.
“What is the mission of this company? People don’t even know,” said Claire Stapleton, a former YouTube marketing manager who left this year after clashing with Google over employee protests. “YouTube is so ill-equipped to manage these massive challenges.”
The YouTube spokeswoman said the company has made significant investments to better protect its online community. Over the last 18 months, the results of this effort include an 80% reduction in views of videos that violate its policies. YouTube also increased viewership on videos from “authoritative news publishers” by 60%, according to the spokeswoman. “While there will always be healthy debate around this work, we’ll continue to make the hard decisions needed to better protect the openness of the YouTube platform and the community that depends on it,” she added in a statement.
No episode in 2019 typified YouTube’s arduous search for middle ground more than the Maza affair. In June, gay journalist and YouTube creator Carlos Maza accused Steven Crowder, a conservative YouTuber, of repeated harassment. The Vox reporter put together a montage of clips from Crowder’s YouTube channel to highlight what Maza said were homophobic and racist insults.
So, I have pretty thick skin when it comes to online harassment, but something has been really bothering me.
— Carlos Maza 🌹 (@gaywonk) May 31, 2019
After saying it would review Maza’s complaints, YouTube concluded the comments were not in violation of its policies, angering some of its own employees. YouTube staff held a private call to explain its rationale to Maza, who remained unconvinced. “It was very awkward,” he recalled.
(3/4) As an open platform, it’s crucial for us to allow everyone–from creators to journalists to late-night TV hosts–to express their opinions w/in the scope of our policies. Opinions can be deeply offensive, but if they don’t violate our policies, they’ll remain on our site.
— TeamYouTube (@TeamYouTube) June 4, 2019
Crowder, meanwhile, devoted a 21-minute video to rehashing his comments. After days of criticism, YouTube removed ads from his videos, angering him.
At a conference about a week later, Wojcicki apologized to the LGBTQ community, but defended YouTube’s decision to keep Crowder’s videos on the site. Removing his clips, or banning him from YouTube, would have put the company in an untenable situation, with millions of viewers asking “what about this one?” for hundreds of comedy, hip-hop and late-night TV-show videos, the CEO said.
Two months later, a group of LGBTQ YouTube creators filed a class action lawsuit accusing the company of discrimination. The case mirrored similar charges from across the ideological aisle — a filing from PragerU, a conservative video channel, which has accused YouTube of censorship. In fact, the lawsuits were brought by the same attorney. “It just looks like YouTube is taking the maximum amount of time for a solution that pleases no one,” said Stapleton, the former employee.
YouTube spent the months after the Maza episode rewriting its harassment policy. The update, announced earlier this month, set new rules that would now treat Crowder’s videos as violations subject to removal. Like clockwork, the decision riled other creators. Felix Kjellberg, YouTube’s biggest star, who posts as PewDiePie, declared he was leaving the video site and blamed the new policy. “We have this anarchy system, okay,” he said. “If YouTube knows what’s good for them, they’ll keep their [expletive] hands out… Don’t come and ruin it for us.”
While criticism comes from all sides, YouTube’s challenge is practically insurmountable: More than 500 hours of footage are uploaded every minute. And the company’s software is still unable to gain a thorough understanding of the content before people start watching. “You are trying to keep free speech going and, at the same time, you’re trying to make sure crud doesn’t get in, and trying to make sure that people who watch aren’t getting affected. It’s a really, really, really hard problem,” said Diya Jolly, a former YouTube executive who left in 2017. “Susan is doing an awesome job.”
Wojcicki’s task is set to become even more difficult. The European Parliament has approved rules that make YouTube liable the moment anyone uploads a video that violates a copyright. That could force YouTube to take down content from popular creators, while hiking its legal bills and hurting ad sales. Wojcicki used Google’s political muscle and invited creators to lobby against the regulation, but she has failed to stop it. According to one former senior employee, the fight often claimed as much of the executive team’s attention in 2019 as the more-public battles over children’s privacy and inappropriate content.
Even in the U.S., the walls are closing in around YouTube. Republican and Democratic lawmakers have proposed peeling back protections that have shielded internet companies from liability for decades. YouTube’s dominance may draw antitrust scrutiny. Lawmakers are also considering tougher copyright laws, egged on by YouTube’s rivals in media and music. “That’s where there is a lot of money at stake, and people have valid objections,” said Jeff Kosseff, an assistant professor at the U.S. Naval Academy and an expert on internet law.
For now, though, YouTube’s biggest challenge is kids’ privacy. In September, the FTC fined Google for illegally tracking children for its ads business, forcing significant changes to YouTube’s operations. On Nov. 13, YouTube sent an email to tens of thousands of creators about the coming “made for kids” designation. If marked as “made for kids,” videos will lose lucrative personalized ads and other valuable features, including user comments. If clips aren’t labeled this way, and the government decides the footage is indeed reaching children, creators can be fined thousands of dollars.
“We know this won’t be easy for some creators, and that this required change is going to take some getting used to,” the company wrote in the email. YouTube has also advised many of them to “lawyer up,” according to partners. A recent regulatory filing went further, with Google estimating the changes will mean YouTube creators “who make mostly child-directed content will likely lose a majority of their revenue.”
In contrast, YouTube itself emerged relatively unscathed. Google paid a $170 million fine, a tiny sliver of its profit. The FTC settlement on the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, focused on YouTube, not other parts of Google. The internet giant worked hard to limit any broader impact on the rest of its businesses, according to one former executive. Best of all for YouTube, it doesn’t need to screen clips before they go up, nor is it liable for any infringing videos.
The FTC is now rewriting its COPPA rules and has invited public comment. In a filing, Google told the agency it was worried about any laws forcing it to “identify and police” videos aimed at kids. The company was, in effect, arguing it couldn’t know for sure the age of its audience and shouldn’t be punished for that.
Critics were appalled. Lindsey Barrett, a staff attorney at Georgetown Law’s Communications & Technology Clinic who worked with complainants in the FTC case, found it hard to imagine the contortions required for Google to make this argument. “Our entire business is based on being able to slice and dice our audience, and see who’s watching what,” she said. “But we couldn’t possibly tell you if there’s a child here!”
The YouTube spokeswoman said the company has done its best to comply with its COPPA obligations, as it understands them, and has asked the FTC for more clarification on the rules.
The company is “not answering the questions everyone wants,” said Greg Alkalay, chief executive officer of BatteryPOP, a children’s media company. “YouTube’s success comes from its creators. They built a beast and don’t know how to wrangle it.”

GT Grade Review | One of the best 2020 gravel bikes?
Well hey guys David here with a review of the brand-new 2020 GT grade carbonate expert and all its carbonate gravelly goodness in this video I’ll talk you through all the key details and changes from the old bike there’s nothing to them are so skinny that’s what I go for right and see how it performs and handled I mean you could do this on a road bike but you probably wouldn’t want to but first a quick reminder to please subscribe to our Channel hit the red button down below if you haven’t already you’re missing out on loads of cool videos from us here at OCC so hit that red button down below and with all that said let’s roll intro and review this bike before I get to nuts and bolts of this review what’s in equipment to remember where the GT grade came from and how important it been for the company and the gravel sector as a whole its first launched in 2014 at the 2015 model year so yes it really five years since its bite was first launched I remember I went to the worldwide launch in Utah in the US to ride a bike where I had my first taste of proper u.s. style gravel riding grand grinding it’s a call over there so with the grade GT recognizing opportunities bringing their currently man’s flight experience to a drop bar a bike they saw people were using cross bikes and rode bikes adapted with bigger tires for ground racing and realize they bring their mount about expertise to drop by market and produce a bike better suited for riding on rough terrain and mixed terrain riding which is really popular now at first glance then it doesn’t look like much has changed but look a bit closer and there are some big changes and therefore I can point out for starters so you’ve got increased Tiger oontz it will now take up to a 42 millimeter tire up from the 35 and the previous bike this bike is expected with 37 so plenty of space go wider it also take a 650b tire as well as that’s your once you’ve got adjustable fork geometry to alter the trail for faster or slower steering if putting white packing bags on and adding extra weight so you can liven up the steering you’ve got a new floating rear stays to increase the comfort at the back and you’ve also got a throughout the back to place the previous quick release so disc brakes naturally with the new 12 and rotisserie accent back they take a closer look probably one of the most interesting changer to buy is he adjustable geometry now something we’re starting to see and a few grown white like a Sevilla espero I recently reviewed with a link to that and the pop-out banner above and if you have Bryan’s done the same as well so you can just a fork offset by 15 millimeters by flipping the chip and moving the axle forwards or backwards and what it does is affect the trail of the geometry and the bike so you have a 57-millimeter trail in a standard setting with the axle at the rear most position but you can shorten the trail to 39 millimeters by putting it accent for position so essentially to make it really simple to understand longer trail more stable handling a shorter trail faster handling way GT intends it amuse is to counteract all the weight you add to a bike when you go back packing or a venture riding by adding a frame pack a seat pack handlebar pack and using the rack mounts on the fork so all that extra weight slow down the handling but by going to a shorter trail you gain back some of the agility the faster handling and that provides a but it’s still enjoyable to ride even when got through laden and you bike packing across the Himalayas or the Andes where we going there is nothing to stop you of course from adjusting the trail to suit your preference with or without baggage so if you like your steering fast and nippy being put in a shorter trail like it a bit more stable and calm keep it in a stock setting now I tried it in both and my personal preference with it unladen is to have in the stock 57 meter setting which it is now gives a nice calm handling especially when you’re riding at high speed on loose surfaces here we write the back of the bike and probably the most distinctive and opinion dividing part of the GT grade the triple triangle design now a viewers where a log memory will recognize this from old GT mounted bikes back in the 90s but as a skier one of the most iconic mounts bikes of all time on the grade on this new grow particularly if you increase the amount of comfort at a saddle so the pencils in state they’re made from wrapping carbon fiber over a solid glass fiber rod they look really weak and brittle but actually restrung and durable and the time to flex in a controlled amount now an important change from the old grade is they are separated from a seat tube and connect directly to a top tube and that that change along with a flattened top tube and tapered seat tube allows a lot more flex so when you’re riding over rough terrain the style can move back and forward a lot more because they decoupled the stays from the seat tube they call it a floating estate and og and you can reese it when you’re riding long when you push it down the saddle the seat tube goes forward I said I’ll push it back and that just provide quite a bit more comfort the new GT grade is clearly built to be more capable than the old bike and also first on now UK viewers would love the fact that you can fit mud guards or offenders if you’re watching us with mug amounts on the wrist days and on the fork as well so nice detail for winter riding on a new karma fork you’ve got the three bolts or anything cages so extra water bottles racks and bags can be fitted to the fork plenty of accessories available with go searching online for those as you can see it’s external kaeru ting for the gears and the brakes which I don’t mind it’s neatly done and doesn’t make any noise at all and it’s simple to service you can replace the cables very easily but in a day and age pill might reasonably expect internal cable routing so that’s a point of contention there but let me know what you think in the comment section below whenever a point of contention is the press-fit bottom bracket and not as you might expect – or a bike and its price point an external threaded bottom bracket so a couple of interesting decisions there I do like the external seat clamp nice and easy to adjust and the frame will take a job post as well if doing more naughty train riding and you need that drop pace capability this bike is well expected for the money and includes a Shimano 105 hydraulic disc brake group set gear ratios are an 1134 cassette at the back and a crank set is from FSA and as a 46:32 chain set I’ve got WTB rivet eyes and a 37 millimeter width andö ETB our ear rims both our tubers so go tubers and get rid of the energy would be a recommendation for gravel riding for sure all the finishing kit is from GT got a nice flared drop handlebar from aluminium stems aluminum and a nice carbon seatpost there and a saddle one of my favorite a fabric scoop shadow so really good kits three sensible kit it’s not a flash or anything like that but it’s down-to-earth and reasonable price and it all worked well the great thing about grove like this you can get off the road and head off road away from the traffic angry motorist in sir countryside we got pretty rough down there on a bike stable what it’s get you to twitch little a bit muddy down hip it’s high it’ll play to equip they should be a problem at all pick your line choose right gear and power away okay now that we’re off road guys let me tell you a bit more about this juicy great and a straightaway you can really feel the benefits at the frame of time with a skinny seat state and the way a detached from the seat tube there’s just a nice rule out of a comfort from the back of the bike especially compared to some of the avid grown bikes I’ve been testing recently nice sabelo Sparrow the open wide they read that right a lot more comfort Jess isolating you’ve some of the big impacts when you hit these holes and think it rocks so it’s not like a magic carpet or a full suspension mountain bike but it’s notable it’s a bit like go to a bigger tire with dropping your pressures a little bit I’m not talking a huge amount place there it’s definitely small I don’t benefit aside from comfort it’s also control the curse the bike is helping to soak up some impacts you’re not being jolted around and shaking off your line so much there’s a lot more stable a bit planted you carry speed best through the corners it’s not the only thing erratic or sudden turn on and catch you off-guard and it also helps you either to keep on the power you keep peddling keep going where you want it to go right coming into this barrel stretch across the busy main road will clip Bosh off road again bumpy hit [Music] clean the log okay Lin – faster but it gravel pantry open up it more now and you can feel a stiffness and afraid in a way trying to how get on the pedals square sword frame mediate and gain that back into really to soak up something big impact here the steering of nice then relax its not to go places gone gone gone Flyway so as I say the steering is too loose and relaxed its kind of slow side in a thief upsetting on that fork off so it adjustable just like that it yes witchy not too fast and lively and that’s what you want a nice sort of track you’re gonna bike to just say Carlin and trail not quite cut inputs on the steering keep it again where you want it to go because you’re concentrating so many things you may have been waiting around trying to solve some of the biggest lookout for wildlife it’s a lot more going on on the government like cooperate if sensitive in blood bodies and you want a nice handy bike it might be a lot of marketing PS around grammar bikes at the moment and everybody jumping on the bandwagon but the essence of what it’s all about this getting operate site what sort of bad what I say good yes don’t really eight grand buys dirt ok byte crossed might mad bikes they’re all fine these bikes are geometry changes that this breaks of wide she retires and some of the frame of answers we’re seeing particularly at grade made a much nicer more enjoyable more fun and isn’t that what’s all about having fun you know okay that’s enough rambling time to get back to this bike at our new my final thoughts on a new ugt grade so what’s my verdict on the new GT grade well I think the thumbs up this is a really compelling bug it provides fantastic handling on a range of terrain from gravel to road where your thirst are as well got adjustable geometry and fit white eyes put slick tires on put mud guards on plenty of rack mounts for bottles and cages and everything you want to fit if you go into venturing you fit a drop patient is doing more gnarly off-road terrain I like the comfort you get from the new floating rear stays the handling as a whole it’s just a highlight really it’s fast it’s fun agile stable everything you want in a package that doesn’t cost a fortune got nice wide range gears powerful hydraulic disc brakes nice LED drop handlebar and the lovely saddle so there’s really nothing I’d change probably anything I changed go to a wide tire than the riblets at a stock spec the tires are good compromise for Road and off-road but you definitely go to a more meaty tire for getting in to proper off-road terrain that’s a package if you’re new to grab riding you want to dabble in it if you want to buy it at first I’ll can we use for a lot of different situations then the grade definitely it’s a good pick and that a price that isn’t gonna hopefully break the bank too much and if it’s too much money there is a bike starting at 850 pounds of world but you swap from carbon to aluminium so yeah been long overdue you update it taking them quite a while they could done it a year or two years ago but it’s here finally and some sensible updates without ruining the formula or third grade that we have loved here at OCC so yeah it done a good job I think GT but now a time to turn it over to you and I will know what you guys think of a new GT great are you loving it are you hating it got any questions at all do put them in the comment section down below always love to see your thoughts and opinions on the bikes we’re reviewing here at race EC but that’s all for now thank you so much for watching I’ll see you again next time
