I love how Discworld's mentor characters are all deeply flawed actually. Tired of old people having everything right, I love how these ones set up the next generation with room to grow and be idealistic, even if the mentors themselves are deeply rooted in the old practices of the system they've already changed so much. Pratchett really said we should revere our elders but also seek to push past their limits

#thinking abt jackrum AND Vimes AND granny Weatherwax #they all make great progress #but also facilitate the younger generation to make further progress #even if they don't fully understand what the next phase of progress entails. they are helping the kids get there gdi #it reminds me a lot of the elders in my life #who can't fully disentangle my naiveté from my aspirations #there's confusion #everyone deals with new frontiers and new ideas differently #but the best mentors will encourage you to push on even if the type of liberation they fought for is mostly already won #cause they aren't built for the next step but you could be #discworld
