Possibly, but you'd have to practice a lot in a 0g environment, because throwing things in space is very different than on Earth - objects don't arc, which we're usually expecting when throwing. And if you miss your target those suckers are going to keep going.

I also read that on the ISS stuff disappears and shows up in bizarre places (again, because of the zero gravity, you can't set something on a countertop and expect it to still be there later) so I am now envisioning a spaceship story with a knife thrower on the team but their knives are constantly showing up in weird places. Shake your blankets out, they might have knives in them! Open up the cupboard to get some food? Knives. Need to use the space toilet? Oh you will never expect what happens next-

Oh yeah, apparently back in the original conception of Fellowship, Aragorn was just supposed to be a ranger who helped the Hobbits on their journey, and not actually secretly the heir of Isildur and all that, and he was originally a Hobbit ranger and had a different name (a name that was more along the lines of "Strider" rather than "Aragorn"). There were notes about Hobbit-ranger!Aragorn all through the Fellowship in the LOTR companion I read back when. I think the last time he was mentioned was in a quoted note of Tolkien's about how Hobbit-ranger!Aragorn should not see anything of importance on the high seat at Amon Hen.

Pulling a piece out of an already massive post to reply to @zenosanalytic :

Most of this is great, but I feel like this overstates the influence and power of exclusionists; they never took over either Feminist or Lesbian groups or turned them en masse against bisexuals and transpeople, at least not in the US(in Britain it's an accurate description from what I've read). They def were still there, TRYING to(they were majorly annoying in the Fair scene), and you'd meet them or lesbian-separatists moving in wider queer circles, but they were pretty consistently losing that fight especially in academic and political queer orgs and, by the 00s, were pretty much irrelevant. They stayed that way until the Conservative movement deliberately revived/coopted them in the 10s.

Because... here's the bit from the original post I think this is talking about:

That process of expelling bi women from lesbian groups with immense prejudice continues to this day and leaves scars on a lot of bi/pan people. A lot of bisexuals, myself included, have an experience of “double discrimination”; we are made to feel unwelcome or invisible both in straight society, and in LGBT spaces.

It is absolutely true that radfems did not succeed in making exclusionary politics the mainstream policy of LGBT institutions. Hooowever. That's not what I was talking about.

Most people do not engage with the LGBTQ+ community solely by, like... walking into a policy meeting at GLAAD. Generally we do things like finding LGBTQ+ content on social media, or by attending LGBTQ+ social events, or by trying to find people to date!

In those settings, groups that are minoritized within the LGBTQ+ community (bi, pan, m-spec, ace, aro, trans, nb, etc) experience being treated in ways that are invalidating or derogatory. Not all the time! #notalllesbians!! The majority of the community might actually be kind and welcoming, and it might be relatively small microaggressions. But those microaggressions can happen often enough, and in a context where not much is being done to show that we are valued by the community, to create a sense of wariness and unwelcome in a space that ought to be safe for us.

I didn't attend a single LGBTQ+ event, or try to date a single woman, my entire undergrad career, because when I was 16, the first real-life gays and lesbians I ever met laughed and joked, in my hearing, about how bisexual teenage girls are just sluts who are doing it for the attention, not actually gay. It's not that I believed them, since they were obviously wrong; it's just that I went, "Oh okay, so LGBT spaces are still ones where I'll be bullied and shit-talked. I absolutely cannot deal with any more of that, so I'll just never go into those spaces."

Mine is a very small story. There are a lot of little stories like mine, and also ones big enough that they'd look exclusionary even to an outside observer. I know people who actually did get pushed out of their college GSAs, or lost their whole social support network, or had people try to coerce them into thinking they were horrible misguided tools of the patriarchy, in LGBT spaces, because they were bi, pan, m-spec, ace, aro, trans, nb, etc.

If you'd clicked the link in the post labelled "double discrimination", you'd read an NBC article that says, in part:

“This study adds to the growing body of research confirming that bisexual people face unique mental health disparities [that are] closely related to stigma and discrimination [they face] from straight, gay and lesbian communities,” Heron Greenesmith, a senior policy analyst at LGBTQ advocacy organization Movement Advancement Project, said.

(Note: this means "unique" as compared to gays and lesbians, which have been the focus of most mental health research and practice in this area. Namely, bisexuals tend to face certain pressures as a group that cis gays and lesbians don't so much. It does not mean "unique" as in "only bisexuals experience this". Bisexuals are just one of many groups that feel unwelcome or unsafe in LGBTQ+ spaces they ought to belong in.

Maybe you didn't mean to imply that all these experiences didn't happen. I hope you didn't. Because it would be really goshdarn silly for someone who's been on Tumblr for years to suggest that the 2010s were not a fucking golden age of young LGBTQ+ people tentatively reaching out to explore their gender and sexuality, and being deluged with immense volumes of bullshit by other LGBTQ+ people for it.

I don't want to in any way discourage people from reaching out to LGBTQ+ groups, because it's very possible that the reward will far outweigh the risks. It's possible that other people will welcome you and will enforce a code of conduct against anyone who gives you shit. I'm not saying, "Hide forever! You're on your own, kid!"

But on the other hand, it is very easy, in a million different ways, to say "We didn't think very hard about making these groups feel welcome and protected in our space" without ever writing it into official policy.

I think that's difficult to prove! Even if Hussie regularly drew headcanons and fan theorization into the fold of the story, one could just as easily call it the realization of those breezy references to Jewish weddings that Dave made much earlier in the story: "see that little bottle // stomp on that shit like its on fire // noisy ethnic dudes are flipping the fuck out and waving us around on chairs til someone gets hurt" (1099). That feels consistent with the Trickster reading, even if their "ethnic" deviation from the comic's ostensible araciality seems to make them white -- enough so that I can't really regard the wedding as an unambiguous canonization of Rose's Judaism, even if that's how a lot of fans read the panel.

There's absolutely a strong case to be made that Rose's story contains Jewish motifs (eg Freud, motherhood as it intersects with the feminazi meme complex, perhaps even that bottle Rose breaks 50 pages after Dave makes the wedding joke). But similar motifs permeate the story outside of Rose to a degree that her being a medium for the story's rhetorical misappropriation of Judaism doesn't persuade me that Rose has been made canonically Jewish. I would phrase it like... the story's preoccupation with bigot's fantasies of corruption results in it periodically threatening the reader with the idea of Rose being Jewish? Or else threatening the reader with encroaching Judaism, via Rose -- this is how I would frame John's suspicious reactions to Rose's playful psychoanalysis, for instance. Similarly, Lil Cal is introduced as the threat of collision between white and black (Chuck Norris and Mr. T handcuffed together a few pages prior), despite the inability of the reader to assign an official race to a puppet. This motif was recycled in Pesterquest by Dave claiming to be "racially ambiguous"; he neither accepts nor rejects headcanons about his race but instead /teases/ them in a provocative manner

You've mentioned relying on fan theories a couple times, especially regarding Cherubquest and what befalls Jake and Dave. Do you know of any old (story-based, all i can find is classpecting studies) theory blogs besides BKEW that might still be up?

Hm, good question! I didn't go out of my way to follow theory blogs and mostly absorbed stuff as it circulated through the fandom, but you're right, most of them trended more toward classpecting. dahnithewitchoflight and zenosanalytic might have a bit of what you're looking for, although I think they both did a fair amount of classpecting as well.

I tended to lean more toward story and character-based stuff on my main, but that is long in the past for me now, haha.

i don't know who needs to hear this, but you can refuse to be weighed at the doctor's office. they don't need it to evaluate anything about you unless you're getting anesthetized or something, so if having your weight taken at the doctor's office stresses you out, consider asking to opt out of the process to save yourself the anxiety or triggering experience.

your weight is actually only documented for insurance purposes because insurance companies require doctors to gather a certain number of biometrics to get reimbursed for your appointment. you can just refuse to be weighed and they'll just take another metric instead.

this is especially valuable for fat people and people with or recovering from eating disorders, but it can also be beneficial for anyone who simply doesn't want to be subjected to scrutiny about their weight when trying to get treatment for an unrelated issue. If the doctor really needs your weight for a specific treatment, they'll let you know.

here are a few ways you can tell your doctor's team that you don't want to be weighed:

"i'd like to decline to be weighed."

"could you please add a note to my file that I'd like to decline being weighed for all future appointments?"

"i'm in recovery for an eating disorder, and I need a note added to my file that i shouldn't be weighed when i come to your office. could you help me get that added?"

"i should have a note in my file stating that I don't want to be weighed." (if you're being asked after you've already told them to note it for you)

Homestuck Rp?

Homestuck has yet again taken over my brain, so rp search time! For the basics, I am a minor. I have about 5 years of roleplay experience. I’m semi-lit (one to two paragraphs) though that doesn’t matter as much in this scenario. I’m looking for a partner around the same age as me (15-17) to do a OC-Only Sburb roleplay with either trolls, humans or a mix of both.

We’d both play a handful of characters in a fansession and I’d really appreciate a someone who likes to analyze classpects, make wacky land ideas, or generally introduce shenanigans into a session! Summary: Wilbur and Tommy are attempting to run a one-party election for L’manberg Presidency, and there’s someone who is not going to let it slide. 

Wilbur stepped up to the podium and looked over at the crowd. It seems like all of L’manberg was here. You could feel the anticipation, the chitter chatter of people excited to see what would happen. Wilbur pulled the mic closer to him, and cleared his throat. The crowd fell silent, wayward eyes all landing on him and Tommy.

“People of L’manburg!” Wilbur greeted his citizens with a sweeping gesture of his hand. “Our nation exists as a symbol of freedom! Of triumph against tyranny!”

The crowd cheered in response. The raised their fists in celebration! How could they not? No one before had stood up against Dream and won.

“So it would do us no good to allow such Totalitarianism to exist in our nation,” Wilbur declared. “So! We will be hosting and election.”

“Unfortunately, only one party, Politicians of Gaming, nominated any candidates,” Wilbur told them. “Those being me and Tommy.”

There was a moment of confusion. The crowds looking at each other and whispering to themselves. Had no one else really signed up? Then the doubt melted away. The cheers returned, even louder than before. Who better to lead than their founders? Than the heroes of the war!

“Really Wilbur?”

The crowd quieted. Eyes followed the voice all the way up to a man perched on the dark stone walls. There Quackity was, perched on one the pillars. Dressed in his signature track suit and beanie, wings folded behind him. While the expression on his face was one of lazy amusement, his gaze was piercing. He stared down at Wilbur, the look a accusation in itself.

“Are you so scared of losing that you have to put on a one party election?” Quackity said with a laugh.

Tommy glared up at the duck hybrid. “Hey! It’s not our fault no one else wanted to fuckin’ run!”

Quackity rolled his eyes and unfurled his wings. He glided down to the podium, landing right next to Wilbur. The moment of shock had passed, and a murmur rose from the crowd. The trap was set.

“Nah, but it is your fault that no one got the chance to run.” He grabbed the mic and addressed the crowd. “Did any of you guys hear about this before today?”

The crowd began to mumble amongst themselves. Quackity smirked. It was so satisfying to see their blind enthusiasm melt into doubt with a few words.

“It’s not like anyone’s standing up and asking to run,” Tommy said.

Quackity just stood there, and smiled.

Wilbur narrowed his eyes. “No.”

“Hear that, L’manberg? Seems like the only election your leader wants is a rigged one.”

Wilbur flinched. “I would welcome a rival with open arms, but Quackity, you aren’t even a citizen.”

Quackity shrugged. “Then consider this me officially asking to join.”

Wilbur scowled, but there was nothing he could do and both of them knew it. The trap had sprung and there was no getting out of it now. The crowd was watching, deathly silent. Waiting for what Wilbur would say. Wilbur pulled the microphone towards him.

Yeah re 8th syphoning: The problem is, so long as the cav's soul is "pushed" out of their body, a ghost can pop into it. When you're just draining someone that problem isn't present(tho you CAN kill them). Speaking to the scene when they find abigail and magnus now that you know what he was doing: this "suction" is a way of drawing ghosts back, and the cav can kinda move around in the afterlife on their end to look for stuff, tho that's dangerous.

Ahh, so he was trying to get Abigail or Magnus to possess his cavalier to talk to them? Although, from the description of that scene, it seemed like he was also draining thalergy from everyone else the same way that Harrow did from Gideon in Chapter 20, just to like, a lesser degree.

hi, i’m op! this is not even slightly a post about hannigram. i have never watched hannibal. it doesn’t appeal to me and i have not written any opinions about it.

that post was me complaining about people mistagging their abuse-to-lovers ships (which gross me out, as an abuse survivor) as “enemies to lovers” (which is a trope i really enjoy) when the definition of “enemies” does not encompass abusive relationships due to the wildly different power dynamics involved. it wasn’t worded particularly well because i was just snarkily griping, not intending to make some deep or thoughtful statement.

I’m not sure what you mean by that second part? But we don’t get a whole lot on the subject of Rose needing to convince herself... one of the books remarks on how depressing it is for Prospitians to have a culture based around futility, which definitely reflects back on Rose somehow, but I didn’t notice any other invocations of the motif.

I could see the books and conversations that nudge Rose toward John to be experienced as like, cultural mind-control, like a constant bombardment of THEY LIVE styled subliminal messages about handsome boys and reproduction (like a less overt version of Jane’s experience). But that still leaves the question of why Rose would pin John as the mastermind of the conspiracy of straightness... though I guess she kind of directly makes that accusation later, through the medium of Kanaya?

Not much of a defense there John... Gosh. It feels uniquely pleasing to see Rose’s paranoia shine in novel ways. Her being paranoid doesn’t mean it’s not true, mind you, but it does makes me wonder, when did John assume narrative control then, if the impression of John’s (clumsy) insidious influence gathered from Seer: Descend isn’t just Rose’s imagination? That’s a strange place to introduce such a game changing power, it’d have to be somewhere earlier, right? But idk where
