Hazbin Hotel’s: Poison, an analysis. Part 9, the finale.
We jump to Angel in his dressing room, panicking while some of Valentino’s pink saliva drips out of his mouth. His glamorous makeup is gone and his hair is a mess.
The show puts incredible emphasis on him locking the door behind him, it completely takes up the screen and we even audibly hear the lock click.
Despite the lock Angel doesn’t take his eyes off the door until he’s out at the balcony. His room has the same chain design that one of the sets did, which is an interesting touch. I think it’s supposed to represent how he can never really stop preforming but maybe Val just likes everything to be cohesive. His room is also a mess. There’s sex toys on the couch, clothes everywhere, a broken coat hanger. Angel doesn’t seem bothered by this though, but I’m willing to bet he was too distressed to even notice.
Angel nervously slicks back his hair and looks at the saliva he wiped off his face and mouth. His back is still turned to the studio below him but he casts a glance over his shoulder and who does he see but Valentino and Vox.
Valentino also has this weird pink saliva dripping from the corner of his mouth, and I’ll be honest I’m fucking stumped on the meaning. He’s holding Valentino’s hand in a very gentlemanly way before he notices Angel and casts him a look of disdain. It’s not a secret he doesn’t like Angel very much but we can’t know why. He could be jealous or it could be some other issue. Who knows?
This causes Angel to start sobbing while he collapses to the group. I like the framing of this shot making the balcony bars look like a cage. The imagery is so obviously I doubt it requires explanation but it hit me right in the feels so I definitely had to include it.
Last but not least we zoom out and see Angel collapsed and sobbing “wish I had something to live for tomorrow” while being carefully observed by a VoxTech camera. Just another layer to add to how trapped Angel is.

Okay. I did it. I’m done. Here’s some final thoughts about the scene.
I fucking love this scene, Poison is my favorite song and this scene certainly does it justice. Considering it’s meant to be more pop than musical theater it’s very pleasing to listen to repeatedly, which is something I value a lot in music. You’ve probably noticed that I didn’t have very many deep connections to make, and that’s because A. I’m a little dumb and B. Poison is not subtle. It’s very upfront with Valentino’s actions and the way they affect Angel, there are a couple little details here and there but everything you need to know about this song can be understood when you just slow it down and think about it, which makes the hate it gets completely ridiculous. If my dumbass can take the time to understand this then anyone who believes this song “fetishized” or “romanticized” abuse can do the same. Abusive people are not one note monolithic monsters, they feign kindness and care all the time. That’s why people stay with them. It would be a disservice to victims of abuses to simplify their lived experiences into something palatable for TV.
Picking up back on stage Angel is now dancing with his extended legs framing the images on the screen. I’m not sure how to phrase this in a nicer way but it seems like it’s implying how Angel’s quest for sex and pleasure is now the source of his suffering. He opened his legs to Valentino and look where that got him. I’m not saying it’s his fault but we already know Angel blames himself so that’s the most interesting and consistent way to look at these things.
Angel makes a spider like pose, looking like a spider that’s ready to pounce. It’s also a potentially sexual pose, arching your back while showing off your ass and all that. It’s also also meant to contrast the pose behind him on the screen. They look very similar. He launches himself and crawls forward in a very provocative way before Valentino comes on stage.
He’s pointing at something with a somewhat sly and sexy expression before he notices Valentino and his persona immediately crumbles.
Look he’s actually cowering at Val’s feet. The amount of ways they express Angel’s sheer terror during the entire Poison scene is incredibly impressive.
Angel reaches out away from Valentino, presumably reaching out towards someone to help. At this point Valentino has already grabbed him, it’s too late. No one has helped him before, why would someone help him now?
The roles become reversed as Valentino pulls Angel off the stage. Instead of the real, suffering Angel being on the screens the fake, happy Angel Dust is on the screens.
Valentino completely drags the real Angel off the stage and off the screen, leaving behind the empty performance of Angel Dust. This is more obvious stuff, Val wants to completely kill anything real left in Angel. He wants someone to smile and moan for the cameras, not an actual person with complex emotions and desires.
Angel rises up onto the screen with full makeup and a brand new outfit. I don’t have much to analyze but let’s appreciate how much he slays.
Angel starts dancing and this is the first time we see him appear on the screens behind him. Despite the smile notice the posture. It’s defensive and scared. It stands out in his dance routine because all his other gestures are open.
I know that flicking your hands like this is a common dance move but I’m pretty sure they chose it for a reason beyond aesthetic. It’s very dismissive, it’s the same vibes as waving something away. Angel looks like he’s trying to wave the abuse off with all his glitz and glam.
Angel gets slapped in the face and you can notice the gag was removed. Immediately after it cuts to him sliding across the stage. I always thought that Angel’s little slide looked like he was dodging something. Maybe it’s supposed to represent how he wishes he could run away from the abuse he faces? This one is a bit of a reach but I figured I should include it.
Angel is slammed against a wall so roughly his blindfold is pushed up. Look at the fear in his eyes, he doesn’t enjoy this at all. I genuinely don’t believe someone can watch this scene and say it fetishizes abuse but I’ll save that tangent for my final thoughts when we get there. It does make me wonder if Angel was ever into kinky stuff, though. Maybe we’ll learn about who he was before all this in season 2. Also look more eyes.
Angel falls to his knees for a dance move, but I’m more curious to his expression on the way down. He seems furious. Maybe these interspersed flashbacks are what he’s remembering while dancing. It seems to be the most likely explanation.
These next shots are of Angel being roughly pushed into the floor while he bangs his fists on the ground. Notice the eyes, they’re all staring directly at Angel. This was my biggest clue these eyes were more than the random eyes we see as decoration, it really hammers in the idea so many people are watching him and doing fucking nothing. He opens his eyes to glare directly at the audience. This is one of the only times he holds prolonged eye contact with the camera/audience during this segment. There a many moments that get close to eye contact but this is the only one where he’s definitely looking at us, I think.
This is one of the most painful shots of of the entire scene, because unlike the last time he sings “Oohhh-oohhh-oohhh-oohhh” this is definitely a cry of anguish. It’s not left ambiguous anymore, he’s in incredible amounts of pain. But just to be really on the nose about how powerless Angel is they’ve also added lots of eyes staring at his suffering. Subtlety is overrated.
The next segment of the song starts with Angel being tied up in bondage gear while he smokes a cigarette. We also see plenty of eyes in the background. I’ve theorized these eyes are supposed to represent all the people watching Angel and how much pressure he’s under to do his job right. Also quick shoutout to Rocky he doesn’t seem like a complete asshole.
Valentino approaches Angel and the first contact he makes is grabbing Angel’s only free remaining wrist so he can take Angel’s cigarette. Angel keeps his eyes stubbornly on the floor, almost like he knows what’s coming next.
Angel only looks at Valentino when he’s literally forced to be, and even then he pretty clearly glares at him. Valentino blows smoke in his face and that causes Angel’s vision to blur while a blindfold is put over his eyes.
I thought this was an incredibly strange expression for Angel to make in this moment, I thought about it for a good 5 minutes before it clicked. He’s trying to fake a smile while Valentino could be looking. He’s terrified but he’s still trying to act. Istg my heart broke when I realized.
Angel is too scared to keep up the act and his smile drops. I like the spiderweb bondage thing, it’s cool.
It cuts to Valentino and Travis and Valentino calls for the scene to start while he throws his cigarette at a robot. Again shoutout to Travis for moving up in the world.
A gag is pulled into Angel’s mouth and a collar is also attached but the picture doesn’t show it. This is the same gag we saw held up at the beginning of the song, and that’s probably why Angel was so scared. He knew where this night was going.
“So far beyond difficult to resist another gulp” haha get it guys it’s because he’s sucking a cock. In all seriousness the most interesting thing is how the leash is the exact same color as Valentino’s smoke. Coincidence? I think not!

Next one will probably be the most fucked up bit, prepare yourself
Picking up where we left off we just say Angel snort crack cocaine. I’m 100% sure that there’s no way Angel is sober in these pictures, if he’s actively running towards Valentino then he’s drugged out of his fucking mind. It’s important to understand just how the drugs that Valentino (presumably) provides are an important variable in their relationship. Drugs make it much harder to control impulses and think your actions through, hence many of Angels bad decisions.
The previous images are interspersed with Angel jumping up on the bed in front of a neon sign that says his name. The imagery is pretty obvious again, Angel can only fully embrace the Angel Dust persona when he’s on drugs. It’s also an expression of the rush of energy people get directly after they snort cocaine.
Angel falls back onto the bed and uses his four arms to frame his face in a square. It reminds me of a screen, Angel communicating through his dance moves that he wants you to look at him through a screen. It’s like he’s saying “pay attention to my pretty face, look at how happy I am”.
Then it cuts back to Valentino and Angel having sex. It’s left slightly ambiguous if Angel is crying out in pleasure or pain as Valentino bites his neck. I’d also like to call attention to the pink stuff dripping out of Valentino’s neck, I’ve heard this could be some sort of love potion drug but I don’t know where that’s from. It’s just interesting that we see this pink saliva a couple times during this song.
Then the scene cuts to Angel having sex with one of the men we saw on the bed with him earlier. He begins with typical pornography over expression of pleasure but the second his buddy pulls away he just look exhausted. Maybe I’m reading the expression wrong but he looks so tired to me. It’s important to remember that all of this is happening in, presumably, one night.
This frame is one of the most striking to me, instead of standing proudly in front of his neon sign like we saw before the angle makes it look like Angel is being crushed under the weight of it. Instead of being proud of his Angel Dust identity he’s trapped under it, unable to escape it.
As the lights flicker out Valentino approaches Angel is a very predatory manner. Angel’s expression conveys a mix of exhaustion and fear. Without the lights on the neon hearts resemble the bars of a cage, and with a wall behind him and Valentino rapidly approaching it’s an incredibly claustrophobic picture. He’s boxed in on all sides, completely resigned to his fate.

There’s part 5 done, next time we’ll be getting into the really controversial part.
