Civic Action Assessment of Issue
One role that citizens take to help the community is to stay updated with politics and be aware of political candidates what the interests are of each party. I’ve learned quite a bit about civic responsibility throughout the blog posts. I’ve been able to stay updated on many political issues because of research that I had to do for this blog . I don’t feel it’s my civic obligation to address the problems that have to do with my civic issue but learning about this issue has swayed my political views and will impact the way I view politics. In the future I will try to find time to see some of the court cases that involve my civic issue so I can further my understanding of the judicial process.

Executive Action Assessment of Issue
Trump’s first action he is going to take is reducing demand and over-prescription, including educating Americans about the dangers of opioid misuse. Then he is cutting down on the supply of illicit drugs by cracking down on the international and domestic drug supply chains that devastate American communities. He will also be helping those struggling with addiction through evidence-based treatment and recovery support services. I think his views on drug overdose and mass incarceration because of it are pretty fair. Most of the action he is taking is going to help decrease drug overdose rates drastically.
Department of Justice
To enforce the law and defend the interests of the United States according to the law; to ensure public safety against threats foreign and domestic; to provide federal leadership in preventing and controlling crime; to seek just punishment for those guilty of unlawful behavior; and to ensure fair and impartial administration of justice for all Americans.
Mark Esper
They are all qualified to be in the department, they handle all legal matters that the United States takes an interest in. They impact my issue dramatically, they deal with a lot of cases that have to do with drugs. Many of the sentences of people that  got arrested for a drug related offense were given by this department. One of their services has to do with  equal employment opportunity which goes with mass incarceration well. Trumps actions have all been very progressive for mass incarceration and the opiod crisis, he helping rates of overdose go down along with rates of incarceration.
The Deadly Link Between Incarceration and Opioids
TCR Staff
Mass incarceration is driving high numbers of drug-related deaths, according to a study published in The Lancet Public Health journal.
The formerly incarcerated often return to their home communities to face the bleak economic or social environments they left before going to prison but with even greater risk of falling into circumstances that lead to addiction and the risk of overdose. This articles bias is against mass incarceration due to it often leading to someone getting addicted to opiods and adding to the crisis. It’s directed at those who believe incarceration is the best way to begin rehabilitation back into every day life.

Constitutional Issues
Case:  Eli Lilly & Company v. Sav-on-Drugs, Inc.
Decided by Warren Court
Details:  a New Jersey corporation was selling Lilly's products in New Jersey at prices lower than those fixed in minimum retail price, which went against the contract they had agreed upon.
The violation of the commerce clause of the federal constitution, which is in the 14th amendment
The decision was that the New Jersey corporation had to pay Lilly’s company
It established the precedent to maintaining in a state court a suit not based on a particular interstate sale, does not violate the Commerce Clause of the Federal Constitution
I think they made the correct decision because the company was in violation of the commerce clause of the 14th amendment
Article
https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/criminal-justice/reports/2018/06/27/452819/ending-war-drugs-numbers/
Subject- How to potentially end the war on drugs
Author- Betsy Pearl
Context- Every 25 seconds, someone in America is arrested for drug possession. The number of Americans arrested for possession has tripled since 1980, reaching 1.3 million arrests per year in 2015 six times the number of arrests for drug sales.One-fifth of the incarcerated population or 456,000 individuals is serving time for a drug charge. Another 1.15 million people are on probation and parole for drug-related offenses.
Audience/Bias- The audience is people who believe the consequences for drug possession and drug related crimes are too harsh and don’t give the convicted person an opportunity to come back
Significance- This article is significant because it takes a different angle when talking about consequences for drug related offenses. I do agree with it because I believe that everyone deserves a second chance because everyone makes mistakes and those mistakes shouldn’t define who you are

Media Assessment Of Issue

The Vox
Subject- Liberals blame mass incarceration on the war on drugs
Author- German Lopez
Context/Subject- The article states that the incarceration rates are going up because of violent crimes not because of low level offenses. They also claimed that the amount of violent offenses is more of an issue than the criminals being brought in on drug related charges.
Audience/Bias- The audience is mostly liberals who believe that drug related crimes are more of an issue than violence related crimes and the article is trying to bring more attention to what might be the bigger problem that is getting less attention.
Significance- The war on drugs gets a lot of attention in the media when there could be an issue that is impacting the incarceration rate more severely then what is getting attention.
My Stance- I think this article brings up some good points to support the argument that violent crimes are more of an issue than drug related crimes but I still believe that the war on drugs is one of the most important issues today.
Washington Post
Subject- As crime rates have dropped the opioid crisis has grown.
Author- Katie Zezima and Sean Sullivan
Context/Subject-  There was a criminal justice bill lead by President Trump to pivot the criminal justice laws that were established in the 1980′s. They want make these changes to the justice system due to the increase in the amount of opioid related offenses that are occurring.
Audience/Bias- The audience is to republicans and the article is trying to show how President Trump is improving the justice system and doing what he can to improve the justice system. There is mild bias in this article but this article is detailing changes that were made for the overall good of the people.
Significance- This article is significant because it shows that the government is making steps towards making the opioid crisis a lesser issue in the country moving forward.
My Stance- I agree with what President Trump and his administration is trying to do, the opioid crisis is a major problem and it is very important for the government to get involved in preventing it from growing larger.
Chicago Unbound
Subject- Race and The War On Drugs
Author- Michael Tonry
Context/Subject- This article talk about the 1980′s-1990′s and how the the government was losing the war on drugs during this time. They also talk about what the administration failed to do to prevent the spread of drug use.
Audience/Bias- The audience is people who also believe that the administration during that time made mistakes and it’s for people who wonder how the war on drugs got to this place today. It’s slightly biased against the administration of that time.
Significance- This article is still relevant because it contributed to the way things are today and played a big role in how the government is handling it today.
My stance- I agreed with this article because after reading it I could definitely see some of the errors that were made by the administration of the time. It also bettered my understanding of how things got to this point today.

conceptualizing The Issue And Assesing Types Of Action
1. I chose to blog about the war on drugs because it’s a topic that i’ve always had some interest in the war on drugs.
2. It’s a big issue because drugs poorly contribute to society in a variety of ways and it can lead to mass conviction.
3. The DEA has been taking action against drug cartels and many big players in the drug trade for years now and they will have the continue their fight moving forward.
4.Out of all the accounts I followed CNN definitly had the best content on this and will be a great source for me moving forward
