this show is a milestone for queer representation
catradora is real and i legit cried like a baby. regardless of what you ship, regardless of whether or not u like catradora, this is fucking incredible.
i know it’s not the first canon gay ship, or even the first canon gay ship in a kid’s show. But it’s still groundbreaking: it’s between the two main characters of the show, it’s one of MULTIPLE canon gay ships in the show, and finally, it wasn’t just alluded to. It was a fleshed out, complex relationship that played a major role throughout the entire show. And it means so so much to me.
y’all I never even heard the word “gay” until I was 9 years old, and I never heard it used as anything other than an insult till years after that. In a small conservative town, there was no representation for me that didn’t come from media. I pretty much just barely missed the growing trend in kids’ media of including LGBT rep. That meant that I spent the years before I was old enough for the more “mature” media — where rep was confined to — being completely denied knowledge of LGBT existence. It was a lonely and confusing time, and I know I’m not alone in that experience.
This shit is powerful. If it wasn’t, there wouldn’t be so many bigots pushing to keep queer rep out of kids’ media. Watching this, I’m imagining a world where kids are going to grow up seeing queer ppl as a fact of life. I’m imagining LGBT kids growing up without so much isolation and confusion, because they’ve seen people just like them on TV. I’m imagining a world where LGBT kids in less-than-accepting climates are going to learn about the existence of other queer ppl not from hateful insults, but from a story where people like them get to be the heroes.
Thank you to Noelle and the rest of the SPOP team from the bottom of my heart. Because of y’all, there are queer kids out there who won’t have to experience what I, and many others like me, did. We’re moving inch by inch towards normalization every day, and it’s things like this that are driving it. Thank you so much.
