I was reading the Evil We Love and I couldn't help but notice that Michael is very blunt. A lot like Alec in the early part of Malec's relationship. Both of them were described as being blunt but gentle. They are both super straightforward. So what if Robert noticed that? Maybe Robert knew Alec was gay, or at least suspected, due to the similarities between Alec and Michael. I find this so impactful that Robert looked at Alec and saw a chance to do better. I might have posted this one already but I'm not sure.

Beware of an oddball thought process : (headcanon/plot bunny)

Shadowhunters and downworlders - but warlocks in particular- were supposed to be partners and work together to protect the mundanes. Runes used to be given to the shadowhunter partner by the magic of their warlock partner. (Or a random warlock, if the shadowhunter partnered with another downworlder.)

But gradually, the shadowhunters parted from this alliance, discovering steles to apply the runes themselves.

The burning sensation and pain however is an after affect of not having a warlock apply the rune, as it should have been.

The knowledge of this could absolutely be lost.

But maybe the group comes across a really old immorta,l who had been around and seen how things deterioated. Or they find a script with the spell that makes the shadowhunter runes.

And they try it out and it works, and it doesn't hurt and it's really powerful like this.
