Hej Kajsa,
It’s been a long time, a long break.
I read an essay over the weekend that I find quite brilliant. Amused be the fact that it bridges three of my worlds, three of my main interests over the years.
Philosopher and art critic Boris Groys writes about how the same pieces of art was read/accused of being facsist and the sign of true freedom before, during and after the world wars. He’s using the philosopher and media theorist (and darling of the tech world) Marshall McLuhan’s famous “The medium is the message” to analyze the different approaches by socialist realist and abstract art (first time I’ve seen that in an arts context, makes a lot of sense).
Hard to imagine art being an important piece in high politics today. Probably good in this context, although I wish art and culture played a bigger role in forming society.
The question of control of mediums and messages is nonetheless still very present in our time — Hej Internet.

Beach House!! 5 pieces of music, 26 minutes of video = art. Sometimes it becomes so apparent to me that music is my art of choice. Nothing carry feelings like music. Power!

55 minutes head-on with Ernst Billgren. About art, the art scene, the self, etc etc. I love this kind of slow and extensive tv, rare stuff.

The Reconstructionists, a collaboration between illustrator Lisa Congdon and writer Maria Popova, is a yearlong celebration of remarkable women — beloved artists, writers, and scientists, as well as notable unsung heroes — who have changed the way we define ourselves as a culture and live our lives as individuals of any gender.

The Zaha Hadid designed house in Beijing and the copy in Chongqing.
Originals vs. copies is a classic discussion in the world of art and culture.
A constructor in Chongqing, China, is taking the art of copying to a new level by building a house with copied architecture that might be finished before (!) the "original".
What is the definition of an original when it isn't based on time and being "first"? Especially nowadays, when we're living in an era when ideas are worth less than making ideas happen.

"Hollywood's slowest suicide" by Andreas Poppelier.
I bought only one painting 2012. The most amazing painting. By an artist I've been following and admired for many years. A big thing for me. Inspires me every day.
And the title! I love Andreas titles. Makes me think.
I agree with Rene Magritte (well of course I do):
"I think the best title for a painting is a poetic title … a poetic title is not a sort of indication that tells one, for instance, the name of a town whose panorama it represents or the symbolic role attributed to the painted figure … the poetic title has nothing to teach us; instead it should surprise and enchant us"
Kajsa, Enchant! Love that word. I guess that what makes us laugh? A brilliant divide for good and bad art, the ability to create laughter. 2013 I'm gonna laugh more, especially at art.

"Make your own Basquiat" app
Kajsa,
I'm all in for “Contemporary Basquiat Plagiarism” exhibition!  And! I got another idea. Let's make a "Make your own Basquiat" app: 1 Take a photo or make a drawing. 2 Write something on top of it with handwritten typeface. 3 Upload to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. I'm going to watch the documentaries.

Went wild on Basquiat the other day. First the movie Basquiat (with David Bowie playing a perplexed and very convincing Andy Warhol - why the movie is rated only 6.8 on IMDB is a mystery), then the documentary The Radiant Child from 2010. Ended the evening with googling him for hours.
A friend of mine that studies fine art at Valands in Gothenburg says that every young artist has had a "Basquiat period" in their career. Writing nonsens words on canvas and stuff. So I came up with an idea, we could put up a group exhibition named "Contemporary Basquiat Plagiarism"?
