Deep House
Before becoming a sought after remixer, London’s Dj D (usually written as DJD) was an excellent house producer. Debuting in 1994 as half of the duo Reel Houze alongside Rob Mello, Dj D released his first solo record in 1996. In 1997, he released Guiding Light on the great Chicago deep house label Guidance Recordings. Two mixes of “Obligato” would appear on it, one an extended mix and the other, the original. The next year, Guidance, releasing a compilation of some of its best deep house cuts from the past couple of years, included it on their second installment of their Hi-Fidelity House series.
“Obligato” is a relatively slow, smooth, easygoing, and simple deep house groove whose full realization isn’t achieved until the final minute. Relying on a polished TB-303 melody that travels along a wave, Dj D slowly cobbles his beat together. Underlying everything is a set of muffled and filtered, heavy tribal drums that sound like they’re being submerged underwater. Dj D builds some clear percussion and bass between the TB-303 melody and the drums. Then he adds a new lazy and spacey synth melody to complement the TB-303 melody..After a little breakdown and build-up, Dj D performs his final tweak, giving those foundational muffled tribal drums way more prominence, yielding a fully-fledged piece of deep house.
