Jakob gave fingerguns and winked at Tommy. Hey, he wasn’t a mutant. Same as other slurs, reclaimed or no. “Uh huh.” More Cheetos went into his maw. Obnoxiously chewing noises followed.

Ding ding ding. Tommy caught up to speed. Cackling into his Cheetos bag, he hid a wide grin. Good one, self. “Yeah. Same place as her,” he elaborated, crinkling the empty bag in a hand. “Shit I don’t have to explain cause she was there too. And you got the American version. Ish.” He lobbed the bag in the general direction of the trash can, “The three….amigos? Musketeers? Tykebomb brigade?”

before the empty bag can reach the can, well before, tommy’s on his feet, dashing for the bag and catching it as it bounces off the rim. he tosses it back into the can. “ slam dunk.” 

tommy let out a snort of a laugh. “tykebomb brigade, i mean i did blow up my school. sort of. its a long story.”

Bucky was fucked in the head. Bucky knew what it was like. Not the growing up in a place like that. Child soldiering? Spy? Programming? Sure. Bucky had friends, comrades - not those kind of comrades.

“Ha!” Jakob clapped his hands like a seal. Maybe a bit overkill. “Busting out of mutant juvie. An’ Bucky mentioned the whole schbang during Civil War. Here I thought they were squares. Not you,” he clarified, giving Tommy a bro nod. “Game recognizes game and you’re familiar. Rest of ‘em cept for Fai are civvies.”

JV for mutants and the Red Room were different but the whole ‘turn these kids into weapons’ vibes were the same. And he guessed befriending civvies was important for his development. “Fuck. Bucky’s right.”

tommy chuckles, a grin curving his lips of genuine amusement at jakob’s excited outburst.  also, he can’t help but give the guy a couple of bonus points for not repeating the same self-deprecating slur he’d used. “ game recognizes game, huh? guess so. ” he dusts off his cheeto-covered hands. 

it’s when jakob mentions the ex-black widow that something in tommy’s brain clicks. “ yeah, she’s the only other person i know who gets what its like to have someone try to make you their personal killing machine. guess that makes three of us now, huh? ”

“Moooooom, god you’re soooo embarrassing.” Wanda parroted back in the same tone to tease Billy. Perhaps she was overreacting and it was just a little cut, but she was allowed to be protective over her sons. She watched as he erased the cut, probably just to stop her annoying him or getting worried. She ran her thumb over the spot. “You have to be careful, they’re not all going to be so easy to heal.” She reminded him, tapping the spot above her eyebrow still lightly scarred from the battle with Thanos.

In her mind’s eye however, she saw a flash of memory: standing over her brother’s body, riddled with bullet holes that she was sure would have killed him before he could heal himself even if he had had that power. She blinked and shook the memory away before her son could see it reflected in her eyes. “I know I’m not being a cool mom right now but just…be careful, okay?” She sighed.

billy’s nose scrunched in reaction to her thumb brushing his forehead, a small quirk he has been told before seemed to be exactly the same as his mother’s. “ i will be, i promise, ” he insists, but before he can protest further it hits him -- the grief. 

what started that halloween night only proved to grow stronger with time, his empathic connection with his family. most of the time it wasn’t so bad -- oops, dad’s not in a good mood i’m not gonna ask him for an advance on my allowance right now. tommy is 100% planning on hiding something in my bed as a prank. -- but every once in a while, it reminds him of how much his family has gone through. 

he bites his lower lip for a moment, not wanting to worry her more. “ you literally kicked thanos’s butt, pretty sure that qualifies you for coolest mom ever, ” he says, trying to quickly move on, not wanting her to be sad or worried anymore.
