"Set within the fort, the Gereza graffiti were not for public consumption in the way that they might have been had they been on the fort's outer faces, where people flocking to the busy Soko Uku market under its walls might have seen them, as would the families of Arab and Indian merchants and notables who built their houses around the fort "The graffiti must have been made for and by members of the community of the fort itself. Those in the southwest tower and the western ramparts of the Gereza must have been made by people with access to these more reserved upper reaches of the fort, probably Baluchi or slave soldiers garrisoned in the fort by Omani or Zanzibari sultans for much of the nineteenth century. They were probably made by people with time on their hands, soldiers on guard duty or spending their leisure time in the breezier upper reaches of the building. This graffiti writer is ‘inside’ these doors which probably haven’t moved a millimeter in 20-30 years——‘at least’. As you can see the piece is extremely well preserved, may even have been put up a week before the shots, we know up-close graffiti. This is outdoors but with a roof covering from the elements. Yet all surroundings and evidence on these doors and structure is extremely well-weathered and worn. *Editor’s Special Note: The graffiti is facing us, in case that was a new wall recently placed back there (This is ‘real’ Philly-style old school type shxt.) If you look at pics #’s 3, 4, 5, and 6—It clearly shows that these doors couldn’t recently be moved (openwise) anymore than they already are, they are open to the max. Photos came back too dark to post the extreme insides, and I assure you there is a FULL nearly flawless piece back there——I was there for the find shots! How was this done?
