Letter to Tumblr

@staff, in wake of this adult content ban, you really should be looking at what the user base is saying because without them you wouldn’t be here in the first place. although I may not agree with a lot of the people populating this small patch of cyber land, I can understand what it is they are at risk of losing; The amount of freedom of expression they are losing. 

Lets not mince words here. you may say this move is about protecting youth in lieu of the child porn that was slipped past your filters but we all know this is more about profit and audience expansion when it comes to advertisements. Also we all know Apple had a hand in this as well when they banned you from the App Store. 

But something needs to be said about this and how it can also harm you as a platform. You can have all the ads you want on a site/platform, but whats the point if there isn’t enough of a user base to view said ads. I guess its a case of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t. But is throwing your user base under the bus worth being able to show more ads on the site. again refer back to “having a user base” to answer that question. 

As stated before, there are a lot of people on this site with opinions I don’t necessarily agree with but that does not and will not mean I don’t understand their need for this platform and in the paramount of a safe place in which to express themselves free of censor and constraint. 

This also leads me to another problem this ban seems to touch on. You will ban all adult content of sex and nudity but the content that has discrimination, oppression, slander, defamation and violence is a ok? I observed from my own page that a video of a fully clothed plus size woman dancing was flagged however an image of the international poster for a horror film that had visible carnage and violence depicted was left alone. Again, if you ban one you need to ban the rest. frankly I would much rather see nipples, penises and vaginas along with sex and porn any day over abusive and violent content but I know that we have to take both with responsibility and accountability. This really shouldn't be you choice to make. You really should turn to your audience and see what they think. Matter of fact, they have already spoken so you probably should work on your listening skills. At this point my 5 year old has better listening skill, still not saying it’s the best but it triumphs in comparison to yours and you’re all grown adults. 

In the end a platform is only as good as its user base. if you abandon them you abandon the chance of the platform succeeding.

please get your heads out of your asses and start respecting that user base that has put in the leg work to make this such a prosperous place.

But why. I know your upfront reason is to stop child pornography but do you need to throw the lagitiment users that support adult content that stay in legal bound, under bus to do so? I will always say the shotgun/ grenade method is never the right meathod and hurts more than it helps. They call it that for a reason. It’s too general and only masks the issue rather than solve it.

You want to help? Better your algorithms and leave legal abiding people alone.

Oh wait it’s all about the money. Ads don’t want to be a part of a place that shows and glorifies adult content. Oh wait!! I see porn hub coming around the corner with so much ad rev it’s bleeding out of their eyes. Man, they even have an entire section on sexual and reproductive health because they know “yeah maybe teens are going to watch this but at least they can educate them selves on the reality of it too”! Gee, pornhub what a novel and responsible thing to do in light of the content you show.

Get off your high horse tumblr and stop hurting the people that actually support your platform.

You’re only going to hurt yourself in the end.

Remember the old term “sex sells”? Better listen to it! It’s can see through everything. Even self righteous sycofancy.

Updates to Tumblr’s Community Guidelines

Today we announced some big updates to our Community Guidelines and what kind of content is permitted on Tumblr. Adult content will no longer be allowed here. While we do not judge anyone for their desire to post, engage with, or view this stuff, it is time for us to change our relationship with it.

We expect you may have some questions on how this will affect you, and we’re here to make sure those questions get answered.

When does the new policy take effect?

Our new Community Guidelines will go into effect on December 17, 2018.

Newly uploaded content flagged as adult will no longer be allowed on Tumblr. We’ll also begin flagging and removing existing adult content with the ultimate goal of removing as much of it as we can.

What is considered adult content?

Adult content primarily includes photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content—including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations—that depicts sex acts.

What is still permitted?

Examples of exceptions that are still permitted are exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery. Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations, are also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr.
