5 Fun Things to Do in San Diego for Adults
Tumblr media
Discover Some Fun Things to Do in San Diego for Adults
Sometimes it really is just frustrating trying to search through a multitude of websites in desperate hope of finding something worth doing… Well, I’ve condensed your searching into one article! Whether you live in the area and are wanting to do something different or you are on vacation and wanting to make every moment worthwhile… This should help! Get out on the water The Gondola Company The Gondola Company is basically your Passport to Italy as it allows you to experience the magical tradition of Venice… in the United States. You will have the chance to softly cruise in a private gondola - a flat-bottomed boat with high points at each end, rowed by one oar - through the beautiful canals of the Coronado Cays.  There are different options for these gentle cruises such as, Pasaporto Cruise - relaxing and romantic, Sunset Cruise - a twilight gondola cruise, Carolina Cruise - for families, Fleet Cruise - to celebrate special occasions with family, friends, or coworkers… You may have up to six gondolas travelling side-by-side, seating up to forty-three people at once. Whichever you choose, you can upgrade your cruise with a professional mandolin or violin player. La Jolla Kayak With this kayak tour you will get to kayak through the La Jolla Ecological Reserve. This reserve is home to leopard sharks, Garibaldi (California’s state marine fish), kelp beds, sea lions, and sometimes even pods of dolphins. Depending on weather you may even have the chance to enter into the sea caves! Prepare to get wet! San Diego Whale Watching Cruise One specifically thrilling, yet relaxing, thing you are able to do in San Diego is whale watching! You will sail San Diego waters aboard a replica of an infamous sailing schooner - the world’s first America’s Cup trophy winner. Throughout the experience your guide will share interesting and informative commentary about any marine life in the area, as well as about some US Navy sites you will pass. Along this cruise you have the chance to spot migrating whales and/or dolphins! Exciting! Go sightseeing Sunset Cliffs Natural Park Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is a city park that sits on a unique coastal landscape. It has a three-mile family-friendly (aka, rather easy) hike along the shoreline. There are several amazing points to access on the trail which include Ladera St. and Sunset Cliffs Blvd. in the Hillside section. From these access points, you can find stairs that lead to tidepools as well as to the path that meanders along the coast. Along this said trail you will have the ability to see the Sandstone Arch and Cormorant Rock. The Meditation Gardens More specifically called, Encinitas - The Place: Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens. At these gardens you are said to lose yourself in thought as they are peaceful and “cleansing.” Here you will find yourself walking on stone and dirt paths, surrounded by well-manicured gardens filled with tropical plants, trees, beautiful vibrant flowers, and potted plants. There are also small, soothing creeks and miniature waterfalls that lead into little ponds - which are filled with colorful koi fish. Now, if you are not wanting to walk the whole time, do not worry. There are benches located along the paths and some more hidden in remote corners so you can sit down, and soak it all in. Maybe even meditate. Stonewall Peak Trail This trail, located in the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park of San Diego, is actually one of the most popular in San Diego. Upon hiking this trail, you will have the opportunity to see breath-taking three-sixty views from Cuyamaca Rancho State Park to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. The trail is not too difficult, and it has a few places to stop if you want a break. Maybe have a picnic in Paso Picacho Campground - located along the trail. Something especially cool about this trail is that you will be upon rounded hills of granitic and metamorphic rock… This rock is the ancient roots of a once actively volcanic, Peninsular Range. Do not worry, it is totally safe now. Visit all sorts of parks Balboa Park Balboa Park is considered central to the story of San Diego as it started up one-hundred and fifty years ago when leaders took the step of setting aside the mesa overlooking downtown to establish a city park. It is ethnically diverse, historically rich, culturally abundant, and naturally breathtaking. This park includes seventeen museums and seemingly infinite gardens. There are different tours, restaurants, shopping places, and theaters. It is seen as one of North America’s most “iconic” urban parks - it definitely seems to be a must-see. Belmont Park Belmont Park is actually an amusement park but that can still be fun for adults… Right? There is access to laser tag, sky ropes, sky climb/rockwall, mini-golf, and a seven-dimensional theater. Who knew there even was such a thing?! Not only will you be able to participate in said activities but there are also many rides, as it is an amusement park. Some include The Giant Dipper, Beach Blaster, Control Freak, and so on.   Petco Park Petco Park is a Major-League baseball park located in the downtown area of San Diego. It is also sometimes used as a venue for concerts, soccer, golf, and rugby sevens This Major League ballpark differentiates itself from others built in the same era with its absence of retro-style red brick and green seats. The stadium is garbed in Indian sandstone and stucco. Any exposed steel is painted white and the (about) forty-thousand fixed seats are dark blue. It’s a truly unique design, making for an even more special experience.   Laze on the beach Black’s Beach Black’s Beach is definitely one for adults only… You will see why in a moment. This beach is perfect for surfers as the coastline has big winter swells. But, for non-surfers, the beach is known as San Diego’s nude beach. Nudism is indeed unlawful in San Diego, but it has persisted at this beach for decades. If you are looking to surf, the surfers tend to head south, of the Glider Port Trail, to the main peaks. If you are looking to laze (18+ style), the nudists hang out more north. If you are not interested in either, keep reading as La Jolla Shores may be for you. La Jolla Shores La Jolla Shores is one of the most popular beaches in all of California - it is actually on a peninsula, surrounded by three sides by the sea. During the summer and fall months, the waves are gentle, and the waters stay warm. This is perfect if you are just looking to float in the sea, maybe even lay in a raft. Or, if you are wanting to simply stick your toes in the water… ass in the sand. Ocean Beach Not only can you surf or sunbathe here, you can also walk amongst a wooden pier that extends an entire half a mile out to sea - you are permitted to fish here, too. Also, there is a sub-beach to Ocean Beach called Dog Beach. On this beach pets are not only allowed, but heavily encouraged to come at any time! See some animals San Diego Zoo Some exhibits include; Monkey Trails and Forest Tales, Owens Aviary, Scripps Aviary, Panda Canyon, Urban Jungle, Polar Bear Plunge, Discovery Outpost, Ituri Forest, Elephant Odyssey, Gorilla Tropics, and so on. San Diego Safari Park Some exhibits and attractions include; Asian Savanna and African Plains, Tiger Trail, Nairobi Village and Gorilla Forest, Hidden Jungle, Lion Camp, Condor Ridge, African Woods and African Outpost, and more.   SeaWorld San Diego Some exhibits include; Aquariums, Explorer’s Reef, Dolphins, Killer Whales, Wild Arctic, and Seals and Seal Lions. There are also rides such as Bayside Skyride, Ocean Explorer, Riptide Rescue, Electric Eel, Journey to Atlantis, and the list goes on! All in all, there really are so many different, fun things to do in San Diego. From sailing San Diego waters to hiking up an inactive volcano, you have hopefully found what suits you! Have a blast with whichever one (or more) of these exciting adventures you choose! Learn the...More   Date of experience: April 2019       Dallas, TX   Sailing Stars & Stripes in San Diego It was a fantastic sail! Everyone on board had a chance to drive the boat, help the crew do various things or just sit back and enjoy. They took lots of pics and gave a link to everyone. The crew was very friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed sailing all around the harbor.   Silver Spring, Maryland   Wonderful boat Unfortunately, there was too much wind and the captain could not raise the mainsail or it would break. So, we sailed back and forth in the bay. Not what I had expected from an Americas cup. The last time we did so was in Maui and since it keeled we the passengers were standing up for about an hour. Quite an adeliline surge. The captain did explain the problem before we left and offered to let us come on another day. Unfortunately, that was after we left San Diego. He kindly gifted us with a cap or shirt. It would be nice if the crew, when they weren't working could be a bit friendlier like the captain's wife. Date of experience: April 2019       Stephen H   Stars & Stripes - What a ride!!! Unbelievable experience on such a classic boat. It is very rare that you can experience the extreme power that a sailboat can generate, but on the Star & Stripes, that power is everywhere. The crew made our trip a complete package of entertaining, exhilaration, and raw sailing experience. Can't wait until my next trip. Date of experience: April 2019       SandraCA-US   Stars & Stripes Fantastic Voyage! Review of: Sail Stars & Stripes America's Cup Racing Yacht in San Diego Beautiful boat and wonderful crew! Wanted to find something to do with my 3 teenage boys, and this was a great choice. We had a fun adventure with incredible sights! Fun for Everyone - Non Sailors Too! Bring your soft shoes and hop aboard with the friendliest crew around! Arrive early to enjoy the video personally narrated by Bee - who tosses in lots of good stories about Dennis Connor and others along the way! (Also, arrive a little early to find the office - which is down the dock aways from Stars & Strips - just look for the tallest black mast.) Bee and the crew put safety first, but without taking away from any of the fun. We've been out twice, once on a very calm day (under 7kn wind) and good air (20+ wind) - and both were good experiences! Snacks and soft drinks are included on the boat, and there's plenty of opportunity to winch-grind and steer. It's easy sailing on the bay because the crew will help you find a spot on shore to dead reckon toward- and yes, there's a trusty windex on top 'o the mast! It's a thrill to sail such a historic, sweet 12 Meter... whether you're a sailor or landlubber! Date of experience: March 2019

1 Famous Sailboat You Can Charter to Sail San Diego Bay
Tumblr media
Check out the Famous Sailboat You Can Charter to Sail San Diego Bay Yes, sailing and boating is already fun, but would it not be better knowing you are on an infamous boat/yacht? One that that has been around and raced for decades? I think so - but read for yourself! What is it and why is it famous? This specific sailboat is called Stars & Stripes USA-11. Now, this boat/yacht was awarded the first America’s Cup trophy winner - on August 22nd, 1974.  The history of the boat/yacht (called America) began with five individuals in the New York Yacht Club. These individuals decided they wanted to build a “state-of-the-art” schooner (a sailing ship with two or more masts) in order to compete against British ships in co-occurrence with England’s Great Exposition of 1851.  In June 1851, the individuals set sail from New York City’s East River to England. The man that had the role of captain was called Captain William H. Brown and he had a crew of eight. They crossed the Atlantic in just three weeks.  Finally, on August 22nd, triumphed in the fifty-three-mile race. Queen Victoria watched from her royal yacht and, after seeing America come over the horizon, she asked her attendant, “What is second?” And he replied, “Your Majesty, there is no second.” As in, there is no second-place prize.  Within ten days after the victory the America was sold to an Irish lord for twenty-five thousand dollars.  But the America’s Cup racing continued regularly. In the 1970s, a man called Dennis Conner had been twice defending the America’s Cup trophy. In 1987 he built four boats and called them all Stars & Stripes. He began taking on crew members and they tested the boats one by one. Then he was left with one and called it Stars & Stripes USA-11.  Conner raced with this boat for fifty-three days until the challenger was defeated. Now, the Stars & Stripes USA-11 remains in San Diego, where it last raced (and won in 1992) with Dennis Conner, and you can hop aboard!  See for yourself on the website - https://sailusa11.com/ - where you will learn all about Stars & Stripes USA-11 sailing San Diego. Is it limited access? Does it cost more? Nope and nope! If you decide on a public charter it will be $125 per adult and $75 per child (ages five to eighteen). Just like any other public boat/yacht!  And, if you are thinking you want a private charter, it is a minimum of $1,500. Again, just like any other private boat/yacht - You can also fit up to twenty-four people aboard.  Is it really better than other sailboats? Well, if you do not want to take my word for it, take a multitude of reviews left on Tripadvisor. (I sourced the reference link in the italicized font, if you want to look yourself);  “Great time, lots of fun! We reserved some time with the Stars and Stripes crew for a sailing tour of the San Diego bay. It’s hard to find activities that can accommodate a large group (17 people) but this was perfect! Everyone got the chance to steer the boat and crank in the lines. The boat was really impressive and felt spacious and safe…”  “The Best .period. Exclamation Points !!!!!Truly awesome, a very enjoyable adventure & tour. Everybody gets to help crew the boat as much as they want, or not at all. The ride is a forever experience, the crew was as much a tour guide as a sailing tutor, no matter what your degree of knowledge was of either. Way more fun than some ‘sit on your hands harbor tour’. Have already recommended this to friends and family and would love to do this again on my return to San Diego. Thanks USA-11.”  “Best adventure activity in San Diego. This is the best adventure experience in San Diego. Well worth your time. San Diego, the home of Dennis Conner and port of call for two America’s Cup races, has this amazing boat from the 1992 campaign. The boat is big, impressive, and staffed with first class sailors. The bay tour is extensive and a lot of fun.”  “AWESOME!!!!  This is the best thing to do for sailing in San Diego. Did a private charter one summer and it was nowhere near as good as this was. The hosts are wonderful and tell you a lot about the America’s Cup, along with taking pictures aboard and they are included. It was a great day!!!”  So, if you will not take it from me, take it from these reviewers that loved being able to sail San Diego water on the Stars & Stripes USA-11.  What time of year am I able to charter it? Anytime - America’s Cup Sailing San Diego offers both summer and winter sailing tours!  Just remember that if you go on a summer sail then you may want to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a light sweater and/or jacket, and sneakers or rubber-soled shoes. If you go on a winter sail then you will still want the sunglasses, sunscreen - you can still burn if it is cloudy! Wear sunscreen! - and sneakers or rubber-soled shoes. You will probably also want and/or need a warm jacket (dress in layers), long pants, and warm socks! A hat or something to cover up your ears would probably help a lot, especially if you get cold rather quickly.  Do keep in mind that you will be out on the boat/yacht for three whole hours - whether you are sailing publicly or privately… So, do dress accordingly!  I am interested, who do I contact? In order to charter a boat/yacht, visit this website and contact them there - https://sailusa11.com/.  If you do not wish to message and/or email them then you can call! America’s Cup Sailing San Diego’s customer support number is (619) 255-4705.  And, if you cannot seem to find the place – the address is 1551 Shelter Island Drive San Diego, CA 92106.  They are open every single day from nine in the morning to six in the evening. 10 Best Sailing Charters for Your Next Visit to San Diego

10 Best Sailing Charters for Your Next Visit to San Diego
Going sailing sounds super exciting… Right? Right! Well, as long as you go to the right places and, lucky for you, you do not need to do excessive research because I have done it all for you! Here are the top ten best sailing charters that sail San Diego waters/coastlines! Do keep in mind, after the first three, there is no longer an order of best to less great - and I will no longer apply review references. Sail Stars & Stripes USA-11 The best sailing charter so far, at least to Tripadvisor and yelp reviews, would definitely have to be Sail Stars & Stripes USA-11. This charter has you cruising around San Diego Bay aboard the authentic 1851 America’s Cup racing boat/yacht. This racing boat/yacht goes twice the speed of an average sailboat so hold on - you’re in for a wild ride!  There are both public and private charters so choose whichever you please - soft drinks, water, and light snacks will be provided completely free on either charter type. The crew member aboard the boat/ship will also be taking photos and videos to later be posted on Google Web Albums - again, entirely free! So, sit back and enjoy the ride.  And, to prove that it is a well-loved experience, these are some of the first few reviews left on Tripadvisor about Sail Stars & Stripes USA-11; “Fabulous sailing experience.” “Wow! What a wonderful experience!” “Joy and awe! Amazing day and a crew who loved being on the boat.”   Classic Sailboat Sunset Sail This sailing charter is one of the most calm boat/yacht experiences you could possibly find. Not only is there a beautiful sunset that you have the chance to watch, there is also wine, craft beer, and light snacks provided!  On the two-and-a-half-hour route you will pass landmarks like the USS Midway and the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. You may just see some sea lions, dolphins, and other wildlife around the San Diego Harbor, too! You will have the chance to take some photographs if you want to wish to document your fun experience.  This is also an all-inclusive, small-group, cruise! So, whether you want to make it a date or a family get-together, it works!  The first couple reviews left on Tripadvisor were; “Excellent sailing!” and “Amazing! A sailing boat trip was on my bucket list and way exceeded my expectations.”  However, I did come across one negative review, “Owner did not provide pictures and enough information about the sailboat,” but the company quickly reacted and apologized profusely. Keep in mind, that is the only negative response I came across.  San Diego Whale Watching Cruise Love seeing wildlife? See a lot with this cruise!  You will be cruising on the ship America, sailing San Diego waters, spotting migrating whales and see dolphins skipping in the Pacific Ocean. As you are watching the wildlife, your expert guide will share informative and interesting commentary about grey whales, dolphins, and whatever else you may see. And, a bonus, the boat/yacht that you will be aboard is a replica of the historic, 1851, first America’s Cup sailboat!  You will be provided light snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, but if you wish, you can bring your favorite bottle of wine to sip onboard.  I think the first couple Tripadvisor reviews sum up the experience quite well; “The tour was lovely.” “No whales but still lots of fun… We did see a HUGE pod of dolphins.”  Gone Sailing Charters These charters are actually more towards those wanting to have a party or celebration while onboard.  They specialize in setting up romantic dates, proposal settings, wedding receptions, graduation parties, birthday parties, anniversaries, and the list goes on.  Similar to Sail San Diego, they also have private and public charters offered openly.  San Diego Sunset Sail With this charter you will end up on a very comfortable, cozy, yacht and cruise along, sailing San Diego’s coastline. You will have the ability to take in views of scenic waterfronts, military vessels, and historical landmarks.  And, if you pay close enough attention to the water, you may just see some marine wildlife! Make sure to take some pictures!  This tour is specifically for small groups, up to six people, and is usually taken by couples that want to enjoy a glass of champagne (included) on the water.  Sail Away San Diego For these charters, all are private, no exceptions. Some options would be Proposal Cruise, Sunset Cruise, Dinner Cruise, Day Sail, Wedding Cruise, and the list goes on.  You will be provided champagne, no matter which cruise you decide on, and non-alcoholic drinks will also be available.  Sail Away San Diego is a family owned and operated business, so they like to make each of their trips feel as comfortable and easy as possible.    Cast Off Sailing This charter gives you private and public charters, again, similar to Stars & Stripes USA-11. Sadly, they do not have boats/yachts large enough for a group quantity over ten.  When setting sail, you can watch the sunset, go out on the water for an entire day, or do seasonal whale watching!  Cast Off Sailing encourages their guests to take control and sail the vessel, but you do not have to. If you would like, you may sip on some wine. Imagine Sailing San Diego Imagine Sailing San Diego gives you options to pass by Bayfront Water’s Edge at San Diego and experience the Downtown Skyline from aboard your sailboat. You can also pass by San Diego Bay and Coastal Waters - this option only allows six people onboard.  Either way, you will be on a private boat/yacht, sailing San Diego’s coastlines. Please know that this is not wheelchair accessible, infants must sit on laps, and it is not recommended for travelers with back problems - or any serious health condition, for that matter.  Snacks and bottled water are included, you can bring your own alcoholic beverages if you wish.    Lucky Sol Sailing Lucky Sol Sailing is available for groups up to six people. The most popular tour given by them is the San Diego Bay Tour.  You will pass all of the landmarks that the Bay has to offer including the USS Midway, Star of India & Maritime Museum, Coronado Bridge, NAS North Island, and so on. You will see shore birds and if you are lucky, sea lions and maybe even a dolphin or two. You will be provided water and light snacks - feel free to bring your own, too! San Diego Dinner Dance Cruise This charter offers a three-hour cruise along with a three-course dinner (with choice of entree). You can also purchase cocktails and wine. Beverages included would be water, champagne, or sparkling cider! Something different about this compared to the others on the list… There is an onboard DJ! So, dance the night away. Another note, there is sadly a dress code of business casual, so you will have to put your blue jeans away. Have fun sailing! The Best Guide to Sail San Diego by America’s Cup Sailing Charters
Going sailing in itself is an exciting, fun activity - but it gets better. Why not sail on a boat/yacht that was once used for racing? Sounds like a good thrill to me! What exactly is America’s Cup? America’s Cup is the single oldest international sporting trophy in the entire world - first being contested in 1851 in a race. It has also been claimed to be the most unfair competition in all sports because the Defender, the winner, was awarded the ability to choose the venue of the next race. This then gives the Defender an obvious, unfair advantage over the other racers/sailors. Still, though, because of its infamous status, the America’s Cup Sailing charter in San Diego - Stars & Stripes - it has almost one-hundred-percent positive reviews, this for those interested in sailing San Diego coasts. Do I really have to race someone? No, there is not necessarily any racing in America’s Cup sailing. But, please note that you will be going rather quickly as the boat, yacht specifically, you board was once used for racing. For example, if that is something you take interest to and you want to try it out - and you are specifically looking to sail San Diego waters - check out the website, https://sailusa11.com, and the yacht for you is called Stars & Stripes USA-11. But, if you decide you do want to race, you can sign up for Team Building races. In these races you will have employee members with you that will steer the boats/yachts so you can just sit back and enjoy the thrill! Or, if you like more hands on things… You can steer, too! It is an interactive tour.  Another plus with this one is that you will be given jackets, polo shirts, t-shirts, and caps; just like the actual America’s Cup sailing crew(s)! Again, you do not have to if that is not something you would be interested in. Do I have to sail with strangers? You can choose to either sail publicly or privately. If you are looking to meet some like-minded people with at least one interest in common with you - sailing - then you may want to decide on a public charter. However, if you just want this to be a family experience, or something else of the sort, then there is an option for you, too - private charters! Who all can come aboard? Almost anyone can come aboard! You can go alone, you can go with your partner, with friends, with your family, etcetera. If you have a child, ages five to eighteen, that wants to go sailing then they are welcome but an adult must accompany them. And, something crazy is that, on private charters, up to twenty-four people can board at a time! That is a lot of people! Sadly, though, this is not handicap-friendly as it is not wheelchair accessible. How much does it cost? Well, for public charters, adults and children pay differently. Adults have to pay $125 and children, $75. Remember, this is PER PERSON. Another note, this is specifically for those that are looking to sail San Diego waters/San Diego bay. The prices - listed on the site, https://sailusa11.com - for all public charters. And, will be provided complimentary water and light snacks. For private charters, it works differently. They cost a minimum of $1,500. But, this is as a whole, not per person, thankfully. Private charters provide soft drinks, water, light snacks, and complimentary photos and videos. These photos will be posted on Google Web Albums where you can access them for free! When is the best time to go? Anytime - America’s Cup Sailing San Diego offers both summer and winter sails! Just remember that if you go in the summer you may want to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a windbreaker (or light sweater and/or jacket), and sneakers. If you go on a winter sail then you will still want sunglasses, sunscreen, and sneakers. You will probably also want and/or need a warm jacket (dress in layers), long pants, and warm socks! Do keep in mind that you will be out on the boat/yacht for three whole hours - whether you are sailing publicly or privately! What do the reviews say? On Trip Advisor I could find nothing but positive reviews. But I’ll list a few anyways; “Exhilarating, Fast, Beautiful, with a dose of San Diego Bay’s history sums it all up. HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU CHECK THIS OUT - SAILOR OR NON-SAILOR!” This person seems quite ecstatic about it. What happens if I get seasick? Do not worry! You will be sailing on smooth waters; therefore the boat/yacht will not be rocking you back and forth, making you nauseated. But, if you are still too nervous about the possibility, then it would be smart to take something an hour or so before you set sail. It is recommended that those wishing to go out and sail San Diego bay to visit this site, https://sailusa11.com, and they do indeed guarantee no seasickness. If somehow you do end up feeling a little bit seasick then ask for a turn at the helm. (They encourage everyone to take a turn at the helm anyways!) You know how sometimes people become car sick if they are just sitting there but they are fine when they are the one driving? It might be like that. Give it a try! I am interested, who do I contact? If you want to call beforehand then America’s Cup Sailing San Diego’s customer support number is (619) 255-4705. If you are feeling spontaneous and just want to see it straight away - the address is 1551 Shelter Island Drive San Diego, CA 92106.  They are open every single day from nine in the morning to six at night. And, just for some more information, their website is https://sailusa11.com.   We hope you choose to Sail San Diego with America’s Cup Sailing Tours; check our availabilty by clicking here.

San Diego & Sailing Charters What You Need to Know
Tumblr media
We wanted to compile a list of some of the most popular and highly rated Sailing Destinations from all over the world; from Millionaire Yachting, to Learning how to sail, we hope our list we compiled with give you some useful information regarding some amazing destinations from all over the world!  Including our hometown here in San Diego.
FAMOUS AMERICA'S CUP YACHTS
Where to Find them?
1851 schooner America’s sad demise
In 1851, the schooner America, sailing for the New York Yacht Club, beat the Royal Yacht Squadron and laid claim to its 100 Guinea Cup. Thus the America’s Cup was born – what is now the oldest trophy in international sport – earning its name from that first winning yacht rather than the country, though the US did go on to hold the trophy for 100 years. Where is America's Cup yacht America now? Click here to find out
1930 Shamrock V is still sailing
J Class yachts are synonymous with the America’s Cup as these slim, graceful beauties once represented the fleet racing for the Cup. The 36.42 metre Shamrock V, commissioned by Sir Thomas Lipton for his fifth and final bid, she was the first J Class yacht to compete for the Cup. The fact that she is the only J Class yacht to be built in wood makes it all the more remarkable that Shamrock V is still floating today. Where is America's Cup yacht Shamrock V now?  Click here to find out
1987 movie star Stars & Stripes - still racing
While the film Wind, one of the best boat movies, was inspired by Dennis Conner’s experience competing for the America’s Cup in 1983 on board Liberty, the yacht that was actually used in filming was the 12 Metre type sailing yacht Stars & Stripes 87. She was called Geronimo in the film, but Stars & Stripes 87 was more than a screen legend. When Conner launched his own campaign, he wanted a culmination of all the Stars & Stripes yachts that came before her, and she was designed to be fast in heavy air. Stars & Stripes 87 wound up being the final 12 metre yacht to win the America’s Cup. Where is the America's Cup yacht Stars & Stripes 87 now? Stars & Stripes 87 can be found in the Caribbean now, able to be sailed with the St Maarten 12 Metre Challenge, giving you a chance to take the helm (if you're lucky) of a real Cup winner.
1988 Stars & Stripes multihulls
Paving the way for the high-performance multihull America's Cup yachts that are redefining the competition is Stars & Stripes – the catamaran. The first America's Cup multihull yacht, the US team's Stars & Stripes came to be by a cunning interpretation of the Deed of Gift, which only stipulated the challenging yachts be single masted and no more than 90 feet LWL. The result was anything but a true match race, with the much faster, wing-masted multihull Stars & Stripes winning the Cup in 1988. *Where are the America's Cup multihull yachts Stars & Stripes now?  Answer and Source
1994 Stars & Stripes once used as a training yacht by Oracle Team USA
America’s Cup yacht Stars & Stripes (sail number 34) is probably most famous for not winning a Cup. It wasn’t because she didn’t perform under pressure, but because she never got the chance. While the 24 metre yacht, designed by David Peddic and built in 1994 by Goetz Boat Works, won the right to defend the Cup, Dennis Conner chose Young America(US 36) over Stars & Stripes. The new choice was no match for Team New Zealand’s Black Magic, which beat out Team Dennis Conner four times in a row. Where is America's Cup yachts Stars & Stripes (US 34) now? Famed America’s Cup Stars & Stripes (US 34) is earning a chance to prove herself on the racecourse yet again. She sails out of Chicago, racing against Abracadabra (US 54). After failing to win the Cup in 2000, this iteration of Abracadabra was bought by Larry Ellison, who used her as a training boat for his Oracle Team USA.
2003 USA 76 still sailing in San Francisco Bay
Sailed by the US challenging team in preparations for the 2003 America’s Cup in Auckland, New Zealand, USA 76 never made it to the Cup, but she came quite close. Making it to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup final, USA 76 faced the Swiss Team Alinghi but didn’t come out on top. So the US team arranged for a “rematch” against Alinghi, with two races set in San Francisco Bay. While it didn’t change the results of the Cup, this time USA 76 bested the Swiss competitors twice over. Where is America’s Cup yacht USA 76 now? Sailing San Diego Reviews from America's Cup Sailing Tours
We Love Reviews - we truly hope that you decide to visit our sailing tour and take an awesome boat ride around san diego bay on the famous Stars and Stripes; America's Cup racing yacht.  Please find more of our reviews on TripAdvisor, Yelp, Google, and Facebook. Also, you can scroll to the bottom of the page for all of our review links, as well as our review page here.   "Amazing Experience Sailing on The Stars & Stripes! We booked a team building event on the Stars & Stripes and it was fantastic! Lynn & Bee are such sweet awesome people and they and their crew gave us such a wonderful experience. First Bee gave a great presentation of the history of the America's Cup, which was very interesting and informative. Then after we set sail, everyone in our group worked together sailing the boat, from grinding the gears, winching the sails and even actually steering the boat! A very hands on experience. The boat was very smooth and not rocky at all, so no need to worry about getting seasick or wet. Bee took great pictures and video the whole time, and watching them back in the office was a lot of fun for everyone. She sent the link so others at my company could see as well. People at my work are still talking about it. I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking to have a fun and unique experience in San Diego!" See a few of our Top reviews from the past few years and see what people are saying about the Famous Stars & Stripes Sailing Tours of San Diego Bay.   An amazing experience...One of the best things to do in San Diego We sail out from port with the Crew (all of them very gentle and warm) and we sail throw the bay with this amazing sailboat that is part of the sailing history... They let us to take stearing and do a lot of things. After that we came back to see the pictures that they took (for free)...just AMAZING!!! Fantastic expeience This was the best trip I have ever done anywhere, without a doubt, simple as that. It doesn't come any better than getting to spend 3 hours and helm and help sail an Ameica's Cup yacht if you are into sailing. The whole crew are really friendly, knowledgeable and helpful people. I'd come back to San Diego again just to go back out on Stars and Stripes. Snacks, drinks and photos are included as well which is a bonus. It was a great experience and I can't recommend it highly enough.

"Fabulous Stars and Stripes Afternoon Highly competent and friendly crew. Beautiful sailboat and a fabulous sail. Cannot recommend more highly for family outings, a fun date, a solo adventure, or a corporate event." See a few of our Recent reviews from the past few years and see what people are saying about the Well-known Stars & Stripes Sailing Tours of San Diego Bay. "Sail America's Cup Stars & Stripes This is a great San Diego experience. The Stars & Stripes is the original sail boat that was raced in America's Cup by Dennis Connors. The captain tells you the history and you get to actually try your skill at the helm and help hoist and lower the sails. It is a lot of fun." "Great sail on Stars & Stripes! Had an awesome time sailing on Stars & Stripes. As an avid sailor it was everything I was hoping for. Totally hands on working the grinders, trimming the sails and driving the boat. The captain and crew were great, always taking time to teach us how the boat worked. Would highly recommend this adventure!" "A Wonderful Holiday Sail I took my brothers, niece and her boyfriend on the Stars and Stripes just before Christmas. Everyone thought it was just the best adventure. The history discussion of the America's Cup before the sail was very interesting. The sail was well organized and fun; everyone got to be at the helm. The photos, which are included in the price, were excellent. What a great day!" "What a great day We had the best time on this sailboat. The crew and weather was amazing. It was fun to steer and “grind” to control the sails. Free snacks and drinks. A must do if you visit San Diego." "Special, fun afternoon on the water When I told my husband we could sail on Stars and Stripes he was so excited! It was my first time on any kind of sail boat and we both loved this trip. We had a beautiful afternoon for it, and there was a really nice balance between enjoying the bay and experiencing sailing. The crew were wonderful. Highly recommend."   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mB6PEtKrhY8
Some more of our Sailing Reviews
We like to share our Sailing Tour Reviews from our Happy customers from time to time. We hope you enjoy reading our San Diego Sailing Tour Reviews from the Stars & Stripes USA-11. "Such a great day out on the water throughout San Diego Bay. And they put you to work (if you want to!) - grinding, steering the racing boat. The crew was so knowledgeable about all the surroundings in particular the military boats. Highly recommend for a family activity. Do bring layers. In April it was breezy and quite cool."   Want to drive a Ferrari? "The Stars & Stripes experience provided by skipper Rod and his side kick Bee is nothing short of FANTASTIC! Lots of opportunity to participate in many ways or just sit back and relax enjoying the San Diego views. My boy and I participated in the grinding for trimming the sails and in skippering! The 3 hour event allows a lot of time to participate. We highly encourage this sailing experience. We will be back." Memorable Sailing Experience on San Diego Bay It is a thrill and privilege to be on this beautiful boat with its skilled crew, knowledgeable and gracious hosts and awe-inspiring view of San Diego. Everyone gets a chance to steer! Sailing Stars & Stripes deserves a spot at the top of the list of fun, interesting, unique experiences in San Diego. Great Sailing Experience Our trip was arranged by a friend as a precursor to a re-union of a Navy Submarine crew and it was fantastic. The crew was friendly, informative and super pleasant. They made sure everyone had an opportunity to share in the sailing experience and in the process Hanna took a lot of very good photos and then they were sent to us. The weather turned out beautiful and overall it was fabulous. Wonderful sailing experience with Stars & Stripes USA-11 !!!! If you want a comfortable, interesting, exciting sailing trip in San Diego, this is the trip. You can participate in the operation of the sail as much or as little as you wish. It’s your choice, however, I found it exciting to participate in the “grinding” and the steering as it is easy and a fun experience. Also, Bee Hanna is extremely knowledgeable and points out interesting facts about things you will see on this trip almost to the Coronado Bridge. The crew is helpful and friendly. Snacks and hot/cold beverages are offered. Before and after the sail, you will gather in their office to learn about their sailing ship. Bee takes wonderful videos and photographs that you can download from the link she will email you. I highly recommend this experience for anyone looking for an outdoor, beautiful, fun trip on San Diego’ beautiful sailing waters. Look at a few of our 5 star reviews from the past few years and see what people are saying about the Highly reviewed Stars & Stripes Sailing Tours of San Diego Bay.   Great boat — very fast There’s not much that can match taking the helm of an America’s Cup racer, and Sail Stars & Stripes USA-11 makes it fun and easy. Friendly and knowledgeable crew. Best sail ever We have sailed extensively around various parts of the world. This was by far the best crew and experience ever. Lynn the captain made everyone feel absolutely at home and involved on this afternoon sail. We got some good wind and some serious sailing in and a warm and friendly crew. You can see all our Sailing Charter Reviews on our Main REVIEW PAGE located here. We value all the reviews and sailing tour feedback we get and we encourage you to help us do a better job by leaving your critiques on our Google Page or Facebook Page. It sincerely helps others find out about how unique our Sailing Tours in San Diego are unlike all the others. Our Sailing Yacht is also one of the most famous and fastest sailboats in San Diego Bay. Take a look at what some of our other guests had to say about their san diego sailing tour:   Wont find a better time sailing I had a great time on the Stars and Stripes. The crew were friendly and professional and definitely knew what they were doing. I felt confident aboard and enjoyed the opportunity to help sail the boat when offered. The trip is a three hour sail in the harbor/bay area and includes some history and fun sight-seeing from aboard the ship. I would highly recommend this to anyone with or without sailing experience since the trip can be tailored to your comfort level. It is also totally kid friendly and the few on board for my trip had a great time. All in all- great deal and a great sail! WOW--WHAT A FUN TIME!!! Our group of family and friends--10 of us (some first time sailors) all had a great time on Stars and Stripes USA 11. The entire experience could not have been better from making the arrangements to the great crew that were all friendly and professional. We all enjoyed sailing the boat under the watchful eyes of Lynn our skipper and the great crew. We can't wait for the next time we are in San Diego to do another sail. Mark T AMAZING! We sailed with SAIL USA at the end of June, 2009, and it was absolutely amazing. Our family of 5 (including two 10 year olds and one teenager) were complete novices. The crew was exceptionally friendly and engaging from the moment we arrived. The cruise lasted for nearly three hours, and we were able to participate as much or as little as we wanted. Our teenager, who at age 16 can be hard to motivate, was instantly involved. One of the best parts was chatting with the crew throughout the sail. We learned and laughed alot! It is absolutely the best way to see San Diego from the water, and an experience we will never forget. We recommend sailing with SAIL USA without reservation! The best sailing I've ever experienced! If you like sailing, you really need to get on this boat and be around a crew that has Lynn and Steve on it. Very few people would have the oppportunity to sail as well as they do on a boat designed for racing for the America's cup. Their professionalism provides the opportunity to sail not only really fast but safely as well. To sum it up, I bought a USA 11 t- shirt and sweatshirt. I look forward to sailing with them again. Thanks again Lynn and Steve.   Thank you again and we trust you had an amazing experience aboard the Stars & Stripes USA 11!

Fun Things to Do in San Diego from the Locals
Before you plan your trip to San Diego, there are a few things to think about. Depending on where you are coming from, you’ll have to figure out more or less logistical details from the airport to your hotel. Getting Around San DiegoIf you want to check out lots of different parts of San Diego, your best bet is renting a car. San Diego is much like Los Angeles in the sense that the city is pretty spread out from area to area. Once you are in an area you want to see, or near the coast, walking is nice but it can take a while to get between places. If you don’t want to rent a car, you can also consider taking an Uber to get across bigger distances within the city. Public transport is a good option BUT it doesn’t access all areas of the city.General Information About San DiegoLocated in California, San Diego is a city of about 1.5 million people right on the border with Mexico. Its location on the West Coast of the US means that you’ve got the Pacific Coast to explore.
Top Places to Visit in San Diego
North Park Often regarded as the trendiest neighborhood in San Diego, mixture of good coffee, amazing taquerias, and a vast variety of breweries are scattered around the neighbourhood. North Park got its name because of its location to the infamous Balboa Park, located just South of this unique neighborhood. No matter the time of day, this area offers something for everyone. Holsem Coffee is amazing with their super unique cold brews or lattes. North Park is full of eclectic shops if you are feeling like some retail therapy is in order and Pigment has eclectically curated collection of good. They even have a custom terrarium station.University HeightsUniversity Heights is located just north of North Park. This neighborhood is a continuation of great bars, good eateries, and trendy coffee shops. For some of the best craft cocktails in San Diego, Polite Provisions offers something different. Located in a unique old building with an atrium, this bar is sure will not disappoint cocktail connoisseurs. They will even have food delivered from the neighboring Soda and Swine if you’re in the mood for some good BBQ or comfort food. Park and Rec offers a more interactive experience. This fun outdoor venue has multiple bars, lawn games, and live music. It is a great place to hang out during the day or at night. Take a group of friends. The Small Bar is another great place to taste a selection of cocktails, craft beers, and bar food. Similar to North Park, University Heights is a great spot to wander around and experience San Diego for what it is. EncinitasSometimes overlooked due to its location, Encinitas is located about 24 miles North of San Diego. This quaint little town on the coast is a must stop on your way down, or worth a detour if you are already staying in San Diego. Wandering around the downtown area will find you a variety of gastropubs, vegan/vegetarian-friendly restaurants, and shops. Spending the day on Moonlight beach with an Eve Juice is a must while you are in the area. On Sundays, be sure to check out Leucadia’s Farmers Market for fresh local produce and various food stalls. The small beach town feel wouldn’t be complete without it. With the swell reaching epic proportions at certain times of the year, Swamis is definitely a surfers’ paradise. One of the best viewing locations is perched on the cliffs high above. Mr. Peabody’s offers an amazing brunch for those who aren’t interested in diving into the waves. The Gaslamp NeighborhoodLocated right in the middle of Downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp neighborhood is one for the history buffs. This area is a San Diego landmark, first developed in 1867. Often known for its sprawling and wild nightlife, this area has much more to offer. Boasting more than just the usual booze filled entertainment, there are a number of venues where you can find live music, theatre, and comedy shows. During the day, be sure to stop at Horton Plaza Park.  This outdoor venue has a grassy area to sit, a variety of shops, and various food options. It’s a good place to relax and rest up your weary travelers feet. As the sun begins to go down, this area truly begins to come alive. For those who are into the club scene Omina and Parq will not disappoint. Typically hosting some of the bigger name DJ’s, these two venues are as close to a Vegas experience as you are going to get. Friday and Saturdays can get pretty busy, so be prepared.Sunset CliffsAs the name suggests, nothing would make a visit to Southern California complete without some epic sunsets. This is one of those places that stands out as an epic sunset watching spot. Sunset Cliffs is easily the most popular place in the area to grab a bottle of champagne and end the day. Located in the Point Loma area, this post is known for having the steepest cliffs in San Diego. Keep in mind that because it is one of the most popular spots, it can get a bit crowded.Head over during the day if cliff jumping sounds like something that interests you. Please do some research beforehand, and jump at your own risk. Timing is often required in order for the tide to be high enough for a safe jump so it is suggested for on trained cliff jumpers. Another other great spot is Windansea Beach, which is located in La Jolla. This is a beautiful stretch of beach that has nearly everything. Cool rock formations, with small paths that bring you down to the water. We hope we have made your sightseeing stay in San Diego a little easier.

Sail San Diego Bay
San Diego is the ultimate playground for boating of every kind. A mild climate and steady winds mean that everything from sabots to super yachts, cruise ships to catamarans are aplenty for recreation and racing. San Diego is the place to get out on the water, even if you are a land lover. Adding sailing and boating to your vacation itinerary is a must and with a host of charter, rental and instructional services, plus dinner cruises, sports fishing, scuba diving excursions, seasonal whale watching and other ocean-going outings, you certainly will not find short of activities.  With such a huge variety of activities and sights to take in, San Diego is a city to be visited with time in mind. This is not a two or three day stopover destination. A little proactive planning for whale watching or deep sea fishing and sailing can yield amazing memories. For those who are interested in history, San Diego does not disappoint. With one of the richest historical cultures in the United State, residence of the Bay are not shy in sharing the information to anyone who will listen. San Diego is the ultimate destination for those wanting to learn how to sail, experienced sailors and lazing cruise boaters alike.  HarborsideSan Diego's three harbors are Oceanside, Mission Bay and The Big Bay which includes Point Loma Peninsula, Coronado, the Downtown Waterfront and Chula Vista. All of these harbours offer marina facilities, boat rentals, private charters, boat tours, scheduled excursions and boating classes. La Jolla Shores is a favourite stopover for yacht cruisers. As one of San Diego’s best beaches, La Jolla is referred to as the “jewel of San Diego.” Be sure to make use of the many guided tours for both out of water and in water activities to take full advantage of this gem. If you would prefer to stay away from motor boats or guided activities, small boats and kayaks can also be rented along the coast and at some of San Diego's inland lakes. Boat owners will find ample locations to launch, moor or repair their vessels, whether they're taking a spin around the bay. There is a reason that San Diego is a much loved stopover spot for those embarking on an around the world tour.   Tour Boats and FerriesProbably one of the best ways to see San Diego’s Big Bay is on a narrated boat tour. San Diego has a number of tour operators including Hornblower and Flagship, two of the largest which we covered in one of our previous articles. A tour boat means that you get to see the beautiful San Diego skyline and local landmarks, plus get up close and personal with marine animals, including whales, seals, sea lions and dolphins, and all you need to do is kick back, relax and take in the information given to you while you cruise the waters. Most operators also offer dinner, brunch, champagne cruises, sunrise and sunset cruises and some speciality holiday cruises. Downtown is easily accessible with one of the Water Taxis which move up and down the coast frequently. From downtown, you can also hop aboard the Coronado Ferry at Broadway Pier for a scenic ride across the bay to Coronado Ferry Landing. The quaint island offers sightseeing tours of the area. Whether strolling on the beach or riding a rental bike around the island, visitors can partake of the charm of this community, home to the Coronado Museum of History and Art, the shops and art galleries at Ferry Landing, and views of San Diego across the bay. Tours all include a stop at the Hotel del Coronado, which is said to be the inspiration for the Emerald City in The Wizard of Oz. A must for any sightseer. The Open OceanFor those wanting to see a little more or who are more adventurous boaters, the open ocean awaits. Long range sportfishermen often head 100 miles or more offshore in the more predictable season of Summer and Autumn (Fall). The Catalina Island is a firm favorite destination for coastal sailing enthusiasts with steady predictable winds creating sailing heaven. Most local cruise ships offer short routes between San Diego to Mexico, with some extending the cruise distance beyond Mexico. As stated Summer and Autumn (Fall) are the most predictable seasons to go to sea in San Diego, but if you’re manning your own vessel it is always a good idea to check the weather or better yet, consult the San Diego Lifeguard Service for the most current news and predictions. San Diego’s Rich HistorySan Diego's love affair with the sea and for boating has a long history, extending back to early Pacific explorers like Juan Cabrillo who stepped into history as the first European to set foot in California in San Diego bay in 1542. Located at the tip of Point Loma, the Cabrillo National Monument honors Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The National Monument offers plenty of activities for visitors who enjoy the great outdoors. Activities range from watching for Pacific Gray whales that swim by during the winter months to a guided hike along the two-mile Bayside Trail with its stunning views of the city and bay. An excellent natural harbor and important stop on the California Mission circuit, San Diego's marine traffic grew rapidly during the colonial period and into the early 20th Century. The USS Midway Museum, located on the Embarcadero’s Navy Pier, pays homage to this and visitors get a chance to explore, from stem to stern, one of the longest-serving aircraft carriers in the U.S. Navy. The guided tour gives in depth detail on the nearly quarter-million sailors who have served on the Midway between 1945 to 1992, when it was retired. If you prefer Sail San Diego Bay in style on the America's cup sailing charterThe Stars and Stripes-USA11 is a famous San Diego Boat Tour; conveniently located 2 miles from downtown San Diego, just across from the airport on shelter island drive. The small privately held company in San Diego, California which specializes in public and private personalized yacht charter for small groups was started back in 2011. “This is not something you can do just anywhere,” says Lynn Hanna, captain of the vessel, which is called Stars and Stripes.
