Thanks @vacationship for pointing out that Sydney initiates the first touch with Carmy in Review. As an obsessive person, I will analyze the choice to touch Carmy and the buildup to it.
(Warning: This might bring up some annoyance with Carmy. However, the tension and buildup leading to his explosion in this episode are incredibly well done. Looking back on the episode, it speaks to Carmy's character development season 2.)
So we fast forward to Ebra reading the review, revealing Sydney's dish as the restaurant's highlight.
Ribbon of brine, huh?
Tumblr media
Carmy was already busy but noticed he didn't initiate eye contact with her like usual. The only time he looks her way is to shake his head in disappointment-hurt-anger that this dish she makes herself and that he says isn't ready. It gets a green light. Really, it's about Carmys not being genuinely ready to change for their relationship to develop. Carmy doesn't do this until fast forward - he loses Sydney.
Maybe the lack of eye contact tells us there's a disconnect, and there will continue to be a disconnect between them throughout the episode. And the GLARE carmy makes at Sydney. Everyone should already know shit about to blow up.
Carmy was ANGRY.
Tumblr media
He's nodding in agreement, but you can make it out that he's stewing while sydney is asking for understanding, something he's struggling to give.
Sidebar: it brings up the importance of Tina's say hello to Jeff's friend. Carmy isn't feeling that connection - that friendship right now.so Tina saying that adds fuel to his fire.
Fast forward to more buildup, Richie and Sydney's argument. Carmy comes up with his baggage, ready to end the fight between him, but he is not much help.
Tumblr media
Carmy intervenes, and there's still no steady eye contact with Sydney.
Oh and the importance of Sydney saying WE are learning (call back to carmy asking Sydney in 1x03 bridgade, WE want to make this place better, right?). Early on, they established their bond, but Carmy makes sure, maybe out of spite, to say the new system was her idea.
Tumblr media
This is when Sydney really notices they are not on the same page. That he's pushing her away.
Which is what makes her make the unconscious decision to touch carmy. A plea to connect again.
Tumblr media
Carmy stops like she asks him to through touch. Even though he was ready to walk away, he couldn't help but take a moment to pause even though they're under pressure with time. And for the first time, he really looks at her. His eyes come up even though he's still in his feelings about the whole thing.
That also tells us about Carmy's character. He doesn't talk about his feelings, which reminds me of episode 2x06 'Fishes', where Mikey had to practically drag out of Carmy the reason why he was so angry with him. When Carmy is hurt, he either explodes quickly or lets it brew until it's too late. There's no balance in his anger.
But Sydney helps with this. With their relationship, they want to keep the connection going, and in order to do that, with disagreements, there needs to be a goal to always maintain connection.
Arguments happen even with the most compatible people. It isn't toxic as some naysayers use it as an excuse to this ship. both strives to connect and carmy, although angry stops to give Sydney a minute.
But he still turned away and didn't hash it out with her. He didn't check early on if she was okay. This could be a lesson learned- a blow up may not have happened if he had given Sydney more time and connected with her despite his anger.
This gesture reveals a lot about their relationship dynamic, and looking back, it helps me appreciate Carmy's character growth. His desire to improve communication and become a better partner for Sydney? Sydney being the same way and their efforts to maintain their relationship is what makes the ship so compelling.

god-tier sydcarmy fics
Tumblr media
no one asked but i'm suddenly overcome with gratitude that fic writers just drop these gems for FREE. we are so lucky. these are the ones i constantly reread because they make me feel so much.
all of these are rated M or E because if they ain't fuckin, i ain't reading.
five times at a simmer; once boiling over by seh28 my kink? emotional intimacy. that's what these two need more than any bullshit stars. this fic serves it up like it's a floor donut and i'm carmy straight up eating that shit.
friends, partners, and intimates by sashafiercer i'm always here for it when syd gives carmy what he deserves. and i'm DEFINITELY here for it when the dialogue between the two is so on point it gives me whiplash. written by an all time 🐐.
forget about your house of cards by minecrafter42 i love reading about how carmy can't get it together in sydney's presence. this fic presents their dynamic so viscerally that the slow burn is more like a slow simmer. i needed a cigarette after i finished this one.
temper, temper by malariamonsters have you ever read anything so beautiful it made you cry? yeah, this fic. it's at the top of the tag for a reason because it captures carmy's consuming love for syd so perfectly. i want to live inside this fic.
child with a child pretending by emilybrontay sydney has a baby before she starts working at the beef, and carmy knows what bluey is. i'm done. i am very picky when it comes to stories set in sydney's POV (my girl is a complex masterpiece, you better get her right), and this is one of the greatest, most thoughtful.
Mise En Place by badcircuit love fics that present syd and carmy as partners in every sense of the word. beautifully written, hot as fuck. another one that gets syd right. again, i take portrayals of my girl so seriously and this one is gorg.
Take Care by oysterknife oh boy. this one literally came out last week but i already read it upwards of 10 times. i will read anything oysterknife writes but GODDAMN. this one changed my brain chemistry with the emotional intimacy between the two. i love longing and yearning and this one is like a masterclass in it. the literary references made me kick my feet and giggle. as a brooklyn girlie, THIS is the nyc i wanna see: flushing, crown heights, greenpoint minus the condos, shitting on the residents of murray hill, i want it all. also the ending made me sob. not joking.

It gives off twin flame energy. I think the director was intentional with the Carmy and Syd's mirroring in this episode. They were both wearing dark sweaters with a design on their right side, possibly the same side as their shoulder tattoos, along with the choreography. This is the last time we see Sydney and Carmy's partnership play out smoothly before Claire and Carmy reunite and Emmanuel fills Sydney with doubts. This moment shows us that they are a union and that they're better together than apart- they're equals.

You're right, that is interesting. I think that's what I love about watching reactions is because the different perspectives (especially not having people in rl watch this show with me).
But my protection over Sydney!! She wasn't wrong, but I'm also appreciative of the writing that makes everything so decisive.
"What is going on here"
"You're feeling the wrong vibes bro"
This reaction video is hilarious. Right on the nose! The same people who deny sydcarmy also swear that Marcus and Syd would end up together after she fake lagged on the phone during the "I miss you" and rejected him when he asked her out.
I just realized the people who can't guess the plot that Sydney and Carmy will end up together are the people the writers strive to write for and surprise.
But shout out to this reaction video.

I'm surprised that she didn't see the emotional intimacy too. I forgot about that dessert dedication! It was such a sweet gesture and they have a great friendship.

No but really,
I would seriously question what I've been watching because their relationship isn't just a part of the show, it IS the show. The changes to The Beef, none of that happened until Sydney and Carmy connected. Nothing kicked off the ground until Sydney said Hi.Hello.
If SydCarmy isn't endgame, it will be the greatest gaslighting of all time by television writers.

Sydney: I don't want you to think I was, like, being jealous or, like, bitter or whatever because that's, like, not the case at all. And like thank you for-for saying that. And also, she was really nice. I'm sure she's great--
Carmy: She is. She is. She's great...
Sydney: Yeah? 👀
Carmy: 👀 Yeah...
There's something about Sydney's rambling and the sudden pause when Carmy confirms how great Claire is - and damn it, her stare as she looks down at Carmy and Carmy looks up at her. Sydney affects Carmy in a way that makes him look at her instead of the task. Why did he have to break what he was doing and look at Sydney? Did Sydney's "yeah?" confirm for Carmy that there was some jealousy even though Sydney says otherwise?
It's not the words in this scene but the subtext behind their words and how it affects them. Even Carmy tells her she's great but locks eyes with Sydney. It's freakin April, and I'm still obsessed, but I submitted to the brain rot long ago, and at this point, June is soon, so I'll just keep going.

I don't know, I think, um, maybe if I can provide more amusement and joy for myself, it would be easier to provide for others.
This is why he takes not being there- "failing" Sydney, to heart.

I edited the 2x10 moment that included Daniela and Connor's shocked and almost scared reactions to Carmy's panic. While Sydney seems to be the most concerned. She's the first one to ask Carmy if he's okay in the walk in, she almost reprimanded Natalie for her comment. Sydney was not going to throw his procrastinating in calling the fridge guy back in his face.
While Carmy can't get to syd mentally or physically, he spirals out of control. But something about this moment is the first time Sydney listens to Carmy's panic attack, and she looks so worried - breaks my heart!
I think we're going to move past this walk-in situation in season 3, Sydney's reactions to this situation show she's more anxious than angry about Carmy's mental state.
That's what I want to see for season 3. I want to see how much they care for each others well being and what it means when they express their deep care for one another freely.

I think an element that a lot of anti-black fans of the Bear are missing is that Carmy respects Sydney. They may have their disagreements but usually Carmy has enough accountability to recognize when he’s pushed her boundaries and didn’t communicate well. Sydney may have made a mistake in “Review” but that didn’t warrant him yelling at her.
I truly think a lot of you just want to see a black woman be barked at and remain lesser than. We’re not watching the same show, he loves and respects her down.
They’re equals, he asked HER to be apart of “The Bear”. That is their collective idea, their baby.

Yes! Hahaha Marcus knew she'd come back after she invited him over and asked about Carmy. He knew they'd make up.

It's the camera movements, the close shots, and composition that make it look like a love montage from a John Hughes movie, and the angles that are fitting for an 80s ballad in the background
Also, I love that the close ups don't start until Carmy lays eyes on Sydney.
