This might be an 𝙪𝙣𝙥𝙤𝙥𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙤𝙥𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙤𝙣, but I’ve grown to strongly dislike places that Instagram has popularized. I’m talking about those places where you’ll always find a line to take a photo in front of a vista, monument or, in many cases, a gimmicky prop (think the Bali swing). Have you seen certain destinations like Iceland, Petra (Jordan), Positano (Italy), Bali (Indonesia), Tulum (Mexico) and Santorini (Greece) absolutely blow up recently? That’s all “thanks” to Instagram. All it takes is a few viral posts and suddenly these destinations are infested with wannabe influencers. Many people are now choosing their trip destinations based on how “instagrammable” they are. Sure, it’s great for the local economy, but at what expense? Places like Tulum (pictured) have grown so popular in recent years 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙗𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙩𝙤𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙣 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙢. And then the once cute, quaint little town that felt undiscovered 10 years ago now has 30 min lines to take photos and people obnoxiously stopping traffic to get the perfect shot for the ‘gram. So is that just the natural evolution of a place? Becoming more busy as more people populate the world? Or is it as a direct result of social media? 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪? This is actually one of my favorite photos 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 taken. Not because of the subject matter, or the way I look, or the color composition, or its visual appeal. In fact, I look hot and sweaty (because I was), I don’t love the way my hair looks pulled back, and I wish I had captured the story better than to just shoot a selfie. But it’s one of my favorite photos because of the 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝘆 it triggers, and the 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 it evokes. This was taken on my second trip to Bali, where @michellewest9 and I shared one of the best trips of my life. We happened to be traveling in Bali during Galungan and Kuningan—the beginning and end dates of a Balinese holiday celebrating the triumph of Dharma over Adharma, or good over evil. When our driver Kunyit, or “Q”—now someone I call a friend—invited us into his home for the Kuningan celebration we were thrilled, to say the least. We ate with them one evening, and then on Kuningan we dressed up in traditional Balinese garb and walked in a processional with them, up and down the streets, where there were children playing traditional Balinese music and all the homes were adorned with decorations and offerings. This is the reason I travel. There is truly nothing better than being immersed in another’s culture, and when you are lucky enough to be treated like family during this experience, there is truly nothing like it. So thank you again to @qull_bali and his family for hosting us. One of the places I’ve missed most during this pandemic is 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗼𝗻𝗴. 🇭🇰 Several years back, my partner @schurmer and I had business in HK, and decided to make a week of it, where we got suits made (at @samstailor of course), played tourists, and ate like the pigs in the film 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘈𝘸𝘢𝘺. Then, we loved it so much that we made a tradition of going back every few years, where we would—you guessed it—get suits made, play tourists and eat like pigs for a week. Keeping with tradition, we would have been set to return in the fall of 2020. That of course didn’t happen, since Hong Kong has had its borders closed this entire time. So it goes without saying that one of the first places I plan to return to once this pandemic is “over” (“over” is of course in quotes because 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘖𝘝𝘌𝘙?) and their borders reopen again. Going back through my photos from French Polynesia, I realized that I took 𝙨𝙤 𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙮 photos that there are still so many that I love but never posted. This is one of them. I took over 2,000 photos on that trip, and probably posted only 20 of them, so it’s no wonder there are other gems that got lost in the mix. I rarely go back through photos after that first initial editing session, but I’m realizing now that I should revisit them more often. Here’s a story for you: On Sept. 10, 2011 my parents and I were visiting NYC, spending some time together as a family before I was set to fly to Italy a few days later to study abroad for a year. I was just 16 at the time. We spent the day of 9/10 walking around the city and doing some sightseeing. Our plan was to come back the following day and see some of the major landmarks that we missed, like the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. We were staying outside the city, so that morning, we got up early, got on the train to Hoboken New Jersey and then took a ferry that dropped us off at the World Trade Center in NYC right at 9 AM. Our plan was to do the same thing the following day. In a strange twist of fate, my Dad had been in a hunting accident the week prior, and after a full day of walking on 9/10, woke up extremely sore on 9/11 and said we weren’t going into the city that day. As a petulant teenager, I fought with him for close to an hour, even foolishly suggesting that my Mom and I go without him. He stood his ground, and I went back to sleep. I later woke up to the news of the plane hitting the first tower. We watched in horror as the plane hit the second tower. It was an eerie feeling knowing that we were supposed to be there, at that exact place, at that exact time. In a panic, we packed up our stuff and decided to leave, out of fear for more attacks. Since flights were grounded, we ended up driving our rental car all the way across the country, back to CA. I remember getting a coffee at the Starbucks on the bottom floor of the WTC that morning, and I vaguely remember the face of a nice younger guy I thought was “cute” (remember, I was 16 at the time). Even to this day, I wonder if he was scheduled to work the following day, and if he was able to make it out of the tower before it fell. I don’t have any photos of that day in New York City (my parents probably do, but this was long before the days of digital photos). So I chose this photo of myself in a Hijab, at the Sheikh Zhayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi—quite possibly one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. One of my favorite views of the 𝗟𝗮𝘀 𝗩𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗽 can be seen from the Boulevard Tower of the Cosmopolitan. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝗺𝗼 is one of the few properties that has balconies, as most hotel rooms in Vegas don’t even have windows that you can open. It’s one of the many reasons I prefer the Cosmo over most Vegas hotels. What’s your favorite Vegas hotel? Did you know that the passport office will allow you to take your baby’s picture at home? 𝗦𝗪𝗜𝗣𝗘 👈🏼 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗮𝘁-𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗻 𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁! Watch as little T goes from calm and cooperative to crying and having a meltdown in a matter of seconds. Since babies have unpredictable schedules when they’re young (and probably won’t be cooperative enough to have a traditional photo taken at a passport office or photo studio), your best option is to take the photo yourself, at home. With babies, the passport authority allows them to be seated in a car seat or on their back with a white sheet underneath them so the background is white. Or you can take the photo any way that is most convenient for you, as long as it’s on a white background. 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭𝘴 (𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘐𝘐)… So here’s a fun fact about me: I’m a little (okay, 𝘈 𝘓𝘖𝘛) OCD when it comes to matching colors in my home and in my everyday life. So when this adorable wicker basket came only in a natural tan color, I took matters into my own hands and changed it to match. 👩‍🎨 I spray painted the giraffe a matte navy blue (the glossy was a bit much) and then lined it with a small faux shearling rug. Then I rolled up all of T’s swaddles and stuffed them inside. 🎨 𝘚𝘞𝘐𝘗𝘌 𝘓𝘌𝘍𝘛 👈🏼 for a photo of what it looked like before I painted it. So what do you guys think? ꧁𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗜𝗜 of a series I like to call “𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘐’𝘮 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 - 𝘏𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘌𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯” Several months into the start of the pandemic, we sold our beach bungalow in Ventura and found a place with more space in nearby Camarillo. We then underwent a four month renovation project that started the day after we moved in. Here’s an 𝘼𝙁𝙏𝙀𝙍 photo of our formal living room, which shows the end result after the remodel of what we jokingly call “our 90s mansion.” We ended up getting this place for a steal because most of the home hadn’t been touched since it was built in the 90s. That meant it was structurally fine and—because it was well cared for—it was in 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵 condition, but the taste level just wasn’t… well, “ours”. It had a lot of red oak finishes throughout, tile and grout countertops (IYKYK) and some pretty horrific paint colors. So our renovation consisted of ripping out the existing hodgepodge of white tile, travertine tile and red-colored hardwood and replacing it with a grey brown, dog-friendly waterproof laminate wood floor, 𝘓𝘖𝘛𝘚 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵, replacing the kitchen countertops, glazing tile and marble in areas we didn’t want to replace, switching out some fixtures, and some DIY projects on my end (more paint, some wallpaper and odds and ends). Over the next couple of weeks I’ll be rolling out photos of the final product, along with some videos of the renovation process and of course some 𝘽𝙀𝙁𝙊𝙍𝙀 & 𝘼𝙁𝙏𝙀𝙍 shots so you can see the difference.
