Is There Anything to See in Gjakova, Kosovo?
Is There Anything to See in Gjakova, Kosovo?
When planning a trip to Kosovo, it was important that we see more than just the main destinations there. Having experienced Pristina and Prizren, my friend and I were curious to see what other parts of Kosovo were like. For that, the small city of Gjakovasuited us perfectly. Not only was it a convenient stopping point between Prizren and Peja, where we would go hiking, but I’d noticed a few…

When I think of the most memorable places I’ve been in Tasmania, nearly all are places out in nature. And yet there’s something about the serene riverside town of Deloraine that really appealed to me. We may have only stopped here enroute to other attractions in northern Tasmania, but we were there long enough to see its charms. With Deloraine you have a good old-fashioned country town, with a bit of history, a bit of quirkiness and one stunning river. So whether it’s as a day trip from Launceston or simply a lunch stop, here’s why you should visit Deloraine.
  Town of Deloraine
Before we get to the things to do in Deloraine, let’s take a look at the town itself. With just 2000 residents, Deloraine is by no means a big town, but that doesn’t make it important. What sets it apart is the town’s location, as it sits at a crossroads of sorts.
National Highway 1 runs from Devonport to Deloraine and through to Launceston, while the A5 Highway starts here and heads up into the Central Highlands. Therefore anyone heading from either major city in the north towards the lakes in the Central Highlands has to go through Deloraine. So if you’re visiting Great Lake or Liffey Falls, you may as well stop here and see what the town is like.
Aside from all that, Deloraine is a town with a sense of history and a love of arts and crafts. You’ll spot quite a few classic Georgian and Victorian buildings in town, as well as an old steam locomotive at its train park. Like many Australian country towns it also has its share of craft shops and antique stores if you’re into that kind of thing. Oh and bundles of places to choose from for brunch or lunch, from cafes to bakeries and more.
  Meander River
The part of Deloraine that’s really bound to win people over quickly is its idyllic riverfront. One look at the grassy banks and calm water of the Meander River and you’ll think you’re looking at a painting. The blues and greens you see here are far more vivid than you normally find in Tasmania and it almost feels like you’re somewhere else entirely.
Oh, and I love the river’s name as well as it perfectly encapsulates the feel of here. The river really does look like it meanders here, with the lily pads and willow trees adding to Deloraine’s unhurried atmosphere.
  Deloraine Statues
In the past I’ve mentioned a quirk you find throughout towns in this part of Tasmania. Many towns have a “thing” that they’re known for, like the murals in Sheffield. Well, in the case of Deloraine that thing is small statues. Spend any time walking around town and you’ll spot loads of these little statues.
Much like Sheffield, there’s no clear-cut theme to these colourful characters, other than they all seem to be quite good-natured. Many do seem to relate to life in the country, which makes sense as Deloraine is just a country town. The best place to start if you want to see the statues is with the town’s main street of Emu Bay Road. Even along there you can find at least a dozen propped up along the footpath. Just another reason to explore town really.
  Visiting Deloraine
As mentioned earlier, Deloraine is a super easy place to get to if you’re in northern Tasmania. To get from Launceston to Deloraine it’s only about a 40 minute drive and Deloraine to Devonport is roughly the same. This makes it a nice place to stretch your legs if you’re out for a drive.
But because it’s this close to two much bigger destinations, I can’t really see why you’d need to stay in town. I mean, there are a few options for Deloraine accommodation, and it could make a nice country weekend getaway. But staying in town isn’t a necessity unless you absolutely want to.
Have you visited the town of Deloraine while exploring northern Tasmania? Do you enjoy seeing these smaller country towns on your travels? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.

10 Interesting Sights to See in Jelgava, Latvia
10 Interesting Sights to See in Jelgava, Latvia
Riga may be the biggest city and cultural centre in Latvia, but it’s by no means alone. After all, there are four regions in Latvia, each with their own character and tradition. For the region of Zemgale, that capital is the city of Jelgava. Destinations in Zemgale like Rundale Palace and Bauska may be better known among visitors, but there are actually loads of sights to see in Jelgava.

Don't Miss These Beaches in North Tasmania
Don’t Miss These Beaches in North Tasmania
Even though Australia is famous for its incredible beaches, that reputation doesn’t normally extend to Tasmania. The country’s southern island is better known for its untouched wilderness covered in forest, mountains and lakes. But Tasmania does have beaches, and some of their really quite great in fact. The beaches in north Tasmania are a perfect example of that, taking many different shapes and…

Great Things to Do in Prizren, Kosovo
Great Things to Do in Prizren, Kosovo
The city of Pristina may be the first place people visit in Kosovo, but chances are Prizren is the place they best remember. That’s because Prizen is the more traditional tourist destination of the two cities thanks to its enchanting historical character. In a lot of ways it’s everything that the Pristina isn’t. Both destinations are great for different reasons in my opinion, but the various…

How to Spend a Day in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily
How to Spend a Day in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily
When planning my trip to Sicily, I thought I knew all the main places I should visit. But the town of Castellammare del Golfo should have been on that list and it wasn’t. Lucky for me, I was able to squeeze in a day there at the tail end of my trip. Allowing a day in Castellammare del Golfo turned out to be perfect as it let me see this modest town on the north coast between Trapani and Palermo.

A Quick Day Trip to Devin Castle, Slovakia
A Quick Day Trip to Devin Castle, Slovakia
In Europe, there aren’t many destinations more straightforward than Bratislava. The capital of Slovakia isn’t huge and many of its attractions are easy to find and experience with a Bratislava day trip. But despite my repeat visits to Bratislava, there was one attraction in particular I kept on missing – Devin Castle. It’s probably something quite a few people overlook since the castle lies out…

The Essential Sights to See in Narbonne, France
The Essential Sights to See in Narbonne, France
The South of France really is the region that keeps on giving thanks to towns like Narbonne. Just back from France’s Mediterranean coast, the town is another gem in Occitanie that’s not yet overrun by tourists. And it’s not like there aren’t plenty of sights to see in Narbonne either. Much like the nearby town of Beziers, it has quite a few cultural and historical landmarks to its name.

Is There Anything to See in Rezekne, Latvia?
Is There Anything to See in Rezekne, Latvia?
Exploring Latvia thoroughly means experiencing each of its regions, including visiting the Latgale region in the east. Do any research on travel in Latgale and you’re bound to see Rezeknepop up. After all, this city is often dubbed the “Heart of Latgale” which isn’t the kind of title you just throw around. Naturally, this put the city of Rezekne on my itinerary when I returned to Latvia. That’s…

A Nature Walk With a View at Leven Canyon, Tasmania
A Nature Walk With a View at Leven Canyon, Tasmania
Tasmania really is the ideal place to visit if you want to spend time in nature. It has all sorts of different landscapes and environments to explore and best of all, you rarely have to share them. That’s certainly the case with Leven Canyon in northern Tasmania, where you can have extraordinary views all to yourself. This was the last place I visited during my time in north west Tasmaniaand I…

5 Revealing Reasons to Visit Pristina, Kosovo
5 Revealing Reasons to Visit Pristina, Kosovo
While many people have heard of Kosovo for one reason or another, the same can’t be said for its capital city Pristina. I’d long wanted to see Kosovo as it was a noticeable gap in my European travels and was able to make it a reality last summer. Pristina was where I both started and ended my travels there while travelling with a friend, but I wasn’t particularly excited to visit Pristina itself.

9 Things to Know Before Visiting the Czech Republic
9 Things to Know Before Visiting the Czech Republic
Travel to the Czech Republicis in a funny place at the moment. The country’s capital Prague couldn’t be more popular and yet there’s an awful lot about Czech Republic that travellers don’t know. Because the Czech Republic is much more than just city breaks and stag dos in Prague. It’s a country with culture and character that’s still grappling with independence after centuries of foreign rule.…

The Pretty Bavarian Town of Kallmunz, Germany
The Pretty Bavarian Town of Kallmunz, Germany
Bavaria may be one of Germany’s best known states to tourists but even it has its little secret spots. The small but picturesque town of Kallmunz has to be one of them. It was only thanks to Regensburg localsthat I even heard of this pretty Bavarian town, let alone visited it. We actually visited a few places around Regensburg but for me Kallmünz was the most memorable. Hopefully you’ll soon see…

After all, it’s an ancient city with millennia of history to its name and it’s not too harsh on the eyes either. The best things to do in Syracuse invariably relate to its extensive past or its pretty present. Little wonder it’s one of the more popular destinations on Sicily’s east coast.

6 Tips for a Gentle Time Visiting Toulouse, France
6 Tips for a Gentle Time Visiting Toulouse, France
Travel long enough and you should realise that not all cities need to dazzle you with attractions. Sometimes all it takes is a vibe, especially in a foreign country. At least that’s how I felt after visiting Toulousein the South of France. Even with two full days of sightseeing there, it’s not the Toulouse attractions that stick with me, but rather how it felt to be there. A bit like my hometown…

How to Spend a Day in Bauska, Latvia
Who doesn’t like a nice surprise when they travel? Well, my time visiting Bauska definitely falls into that category. Found in southern Latvia, I went there mainly so I could visit Rundale Palace, a popular attraction nearby. But since I had a spare day up my sleeve, I decided to spend one day in Bauska seeing what it had to offer.
Make no mistake, the town of Bauska is a reasonably small…
