Currently thinking about non-English translations of Jabberwocky, because it has to be so hard translating a nonsense poem.
And it’s not just making the nonsense words fit the translated language’s morphology, you have to have most of the nonsense words mean something for a later chapter in the book where Humpty Dumpty explains the portmanteau words. So in one Japanese translation, “frumious,” which is a portmanteau of “fuming” and “furious,” is translated as “takeburu,” which draws on the words “takeru,” fierce, and “keburu”, to smoke.
But I also just love the names of the Jabberwock in other languages. In French he’s le Jaseroque, der Jammerwoch in German, Barmaglot in Russian, and at least one Danish translation named him Kloppervok. It’s the one word you could very justifiably keep untranslated, but everyone wants to make the name fit, make it feel at home in the translation.
I have no point here, I just think it’s neat.

JUMBO 2023 Reading Challenge - February
Tumblr media
It feels a bit silly posting this February update with only two finished books, as yesterday on the 1st of March I actually finished two more. Well it doesn't really bother me in the end, at least I'm sure then that I'll have something to make a March update about too.
February colour is grey.
Here's what I read
#ownvoices: On the Come Up by Angie Thomas - 4 stars
minimalist cover: Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi - 3.5 stars

Today marks the first day of British Science Week – a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering, and maths Meet Ada Lovelace – nicknamed ‘The Enchantress of Number’ by her peers, today Lovelace is better known as the world’s first computer programmer In 1843, Lovelace published a paper with an algorithm for an Analytical Engine – a proposed mechanical device like an early computer – to process a series of numbers. She was the first to recognise that the machine has applications beyond pure calculation, paving the way for future computer programmers.  After Alfred Edward Chalon (1780–1860), ‘Portrait of Ada, Countess of Lovelace’. Watercolour drawing, made around 1830–1852. Read more: http://ow.ly/c1vQ50N8e5p

You’re tired. Burnt out. Exhausted. Stressed.
This lowers your capacity for emotional regulation.
You’ll cry more easily. Get dragged into low moods more easily. Simple little things where you’re like ‘dang, that shouldn’t hit so hard,’ will wallop you.
This will trick you into thinking you’re weak and can’t handle life. A loser.
Not so my friend.
It’s a signal that you need a nap, need to allow for more sleep at night, need to prioritize and scale back on what you can accomplish in a day, need to take a mental health day or even a leave.
Something’s got to give.
But!
It’s not your self worth.

•68/100 Days of productivity•
“The difference between fucking around in a lab and science is that science is documented.”
Something my mom told me every single time I complained about lab and project reports.
Thanks mom.

07.01.2023
You haven’t noticed, and I wrote last year’s date in almost every post. I still can’t believe it’s 2023… ✔️Norwegian Duolingo ✔️went for a walk (and caught Pokemon hehe) ✔️made part of a 3d model for a project for a university (I want to finish it tomorrow) ✔️made lentil and tomato soup and it turned out pretty good
I have to admit it wasn’t the most productive day of the week. But I needed a bit of a reset. I was playing puns with a friend for a while. I talked a lot on the phone with my mother. I’ve started watching cool anime (Blue Period). It was a nice day. I’m glad, though, because I managed to restore my sleeping schedule. When I don’t have pressure on something, it’s much easier and faster for me.
So remember to take your time in every area. You deserved it!
