Sanders Sides Audio Drama Auditions
Auditions for the Syzygy Audio Drama are now open! You can find the link to the audition information here!
Make sure to only submit the form once you are confident in your recording! Only the first submission will be accepted, so take your time and get the best take you can before submitting!
Tips for recording your audition:
Record in a small space that's insulated - a closet can work very well, as the clothes can minimize the echo and avoid too many outside sounds.
Make sure you are the proper distance from your microphone - this can take some testing and trial and error!
Have your microphone resting on a flat surface, don't attempt to move it while recording.
Don't be afraid to do multiple takes and only pick your favorite ones!
Audacity is a free audio recording software that is very intuitive for a beginner to use, if you're looking for a recording program.
Feel free to send an ask if you have any questions!

Nothing to See Here, Just Your Typical Office Romance
Rated: M WC: 1496 - AO3
Written for @tsspromptmonth's Rare Gifts event, Intrulogical Office AU. A little late but denial never hurt anyone. -
“It’s not like that, Jannie!”
Remus’ laughter rang out from his corner office, fast and tittering, pitched slightly higher than it’s usual timbre.
Concentration torn from the spreadsheet in front of him, Logan’s eyes followed the sound, tracing the pair of silhouettes moving on the other side of the frost glass wall.
“Really?” Janus’ voice, low and teasing, was just audible. “It certainly looks like that from here.”
Heavy wheels rolled over the floor and the rustle of silk on wool accompanied the now-taller silhouette. “How about from here?” Remus asked.
“Fine,” Janus said, sounding anything but. “I don’t need to know all the details of your love life.” Footsteps grew louder and Janus passed the threshold to Remus’ office before murmuring over his shoulder. “Besides, the position suits you.”
Logan didn’t lower his gaze as Janus sauntered down the corridor. “Lovely to see you, Logan,” he smirked, then continued down the hall to his own smaller office. He cast one more glance at him, eyes trailing down as Logan rose from his desk. “As always.”
After locking his screen Logan moved to Remus’ door, loosening the knot on his tie before clearing his throat. “Remus? Is now a good time?” He asked, voice low and even.
Already shaking his head before he even looked up, Remus’ ears flushed pink with he noticed the gap between Logan’s shirt and tie. He licked his lips and shook his head again.
Logan remained motionless, one foot in the office. His eyebrows raised expectantly.
He needed verbal consent.
“Yes, s–” Slurring his ‘s’, Remus saved himself from the slip and he nodded. “Please come in.”
Smiling now, Logan took his seat in the center of the plush velvet couch spanning the length of the far wall. He flicked his eyes to the door and Remus immediately obeyed, closing it with a quiet click.
“Lock it.”
Nodding again, Remus engaged the lock, then hovered his hand over the sound controls. “Would you like music, sir?”
“Yes, the Brahms.” Soft strings spilled from the hidden speakers and he looked pointedly at the fluffy rug at his feet. “Come here, pet.”
The thick fur softened both the impact and the sound as Remus dropped to his knees. “So good for me,” he murmured, cradling his jaw. “Following my instructions, anticipating my needs.” Cheeks flushed and lips parted, Remus’ pupils began to fill his emerald green eyes.
Remus melted in to the touch, rubbing his cheek against Logan’s palm until he stretched out his his fingers and cupped the side of the kneeling man’s face.
“Now, now, my sweet one,” Logan crooned, cradling his jaw. “Don’t drop just yet. We have something important to discuss.” He waited as Remus’ spine straightened, eyes refocused on his and he nodded. “Very, very good.”
Logan wordlessly stroked the edge of Remus’ hairline, long fingers dragging lightly through the fine curls.
Finally, Remus spoke, glancing at the door where Janus had stood only minutes ago before dropping his gaze to the floor. “I suppose you heard that.”
“Of course I did, pet.” Eyes trained on the floor, Remus only looked up when Logan applied a firm pressure, lifting his chin and revealing the thin strip of indigo leather strapped low on his neck. “I’m disappointed. You know my rules.” He slipped his hand lower, thumb tracing the curve of Remus’ throat until his fingers grazed warm leather. Two fingers tucked beneath, he tugged gently. “You may only wear this in the office if it stays out of sight of everyone else.”
Gasping at the sudden action, Remus’ eyes snapped shut and he whined. “But sir—”
“But nothing.” Logan’s voice was nearly a growl. “My rules are simple. You are mine. Only I may see you in this. What did I say last time?”
“No, please—” Remus’ words cut off when Logan tapped the lock, one eyebrow raised.
“No?”
“No, sir.”
Logan looked down. Remus’ voice had quivered, but his body was still, hands folded placidly in his lap. They locked eyes, heat and devotion and confidence behind Remus’ brilliant emerald gaze.
‘I like your possessive streak, Lo Lo,’ Remus had whispered to him early in their relationship. “I… enjoy it.” Honest to a fault, Remus had proven time and again just how much he enjoyed it when Logan tightened the metaphorical—and sometimes literal—rein.
“I wasn’t showing off, sir,” he continued. “Janus stood behind me and peeked down my shirt. It’s not easy to keep this from everyone. Especially from him.”
Logan sat back but didn’t drop his hand, and Remus followed his movement, leaning closer and brushing his cheek against Logan’s wrist. “That’s no excuse, pet. Perhaps this task is too difficult. If you wish to keep—”
Remus’ eyes popped and his hand shot up to grasp the well-worn leather as though Logan might rip it away from him. Logan’s smile softened and he released his grip on the collar to bring both hands to cradle either side of Remus’ face. “If you wish to keep wearing your collar in the office, ” he clarified and his husband relaxed into his touch. “You must demonstrate you will obey my rules.”
“I’m trying,” Remus pouted, that flash of fear spilling over into a taste of his long-tamed brattiness. “I bet you couldn’t do it,” he muttered, eyes down even as he backtalked.
“Really?”
Remus looked up at the hint of danger in his tone. Logan held his gaze before he slowly withdrew his hands and fully loosened his own tie. “I’ll take that bet.” Remus stared, mouth fallen open, as Logan removed his tie and unfastened the top three buttons of his shirt. It was only then that he retrieved the key hanging from a leather cord and half-hidden in his chest hair.
“I’m going to remove your collar now,” he said slowly and reached for the lock. Remus nodded and lifted his chin.
He shuddered as Logan opened the collar, hands coming up to trace along the now bare skin above his collarbone. “Feels…” He shuddered again. “Weird.”
Logan covered Remus' hand, his own long fingers circling the oddly bare skin around his husband's neck. Tight tendons melted under his hand and the worrying tremor in Remus' jaw eased. “Would you rather we didn’t try this, Meus?” he asked in a low whisper, breaking the scene.
"No, I wanna try it, Lo Lo," he whispered back, pulling away one of Logan's hands, kissed the soft skin of his inner wrist.
Remus' mustache tickled his wrist and he smiled. "Very good," he said, straightening his spine and picking up the collar. He held Remus' gaze as he fastened it and engaged the lock.
The collar hung heavy around Logan's neck, the leather still warm from Remus' skin, soft and flexible but with only a little yield. Logan swallowed the the muscles around his throat pressed agains the suede padding. His cheeks grew warm and a shiver ran down his spine.
"Feels good, doesn't it?" he asked softly, still kneeling.
"I…" Remus drove his cheek into Logan's palm, the cat-like gesture encouraging even as it reinforced his role in their play. Logan smiled and dragged his fingers through Remus' soft curls. "I had not anticipated finding the sensation… pleasurable. But you are correct. It is… Nearly distractingly so."
Remus' grin grew crooked and he wiggled closer. "It's even better when that's the only thing you're wearing."
The heat in Remus' eyes shifted Logan's control into gear and he chuckled, low in his chest. "That will have to wait, my pet. For now," he murmured, pulling back to button his shirt. "I have a bet to win."
"Hmph." Remus hung his head, full lips drawn down into an exaggerated pout. His eyes never left Logan's hands, though, and watched each movement.
"Don't wish to tell me what you want if you win this bet?" Logan asked, ignoring the fire racing through his own veins.
"I want…"  Remus breathed, a flush crawling up from his chest all the way to his hairline as he watched Logan re-knot his tie. "I want you to break a rule."
"A rule?" he asked, one eyebrow raised.
Encouraged, he leaned forward and rested his cheek against Logan's thigh. He peered up through the tuft of curls that fell over his eyes. "If I win, I want you to take me here… in my office." Tie straightened, Logan let his hand settle in Remus' hair. "Tonight."
Logan barely hesitated. "Very well," he nodded, smile broadening at Remus' low laugh. "And if I win…" Logan curled over to whisper in his ear. "I'll take you here in your office."
Remus' breath stilled, listening, and Logan chuckled again. "With your morning coffee."
"With—" His voice broke, the heat of his flush bleeding through Logan's trousers. "When everyone's here?"
"We'll lock the door…" Logan promised, scritching the fine curls at the back of his neck and smiling at the way Remus gripped his calves. "If you're good."

A New Beginning
AU: Flower Shop
CW: Remus typical sexual innuendos
WC: 2,186
Date: 12/15/2023
The doorbell rang on his store front and before Janus could say greet his newest customer he heard the man slam his hand on the counter his register sat on. "How much money would it cost to get a bouquet that says 'you're an insufferable git' in flowers?"
It seemed his reputation preceded him. Janus was known for his beautiful flower arrangements, but he was more known for flower arrangements that told people to fuck off without actually saying it. He didn't actually know how to use flowers to properly say things but he knew enough about some of the split meanings for flowers to come up with something convincing. Also, there were a lot of people who wanted to tell someone off, a boss, an in-law, or a friend they weren't too friendly with and so Janus had a brand. The stronger his brand, the more people bought for their unsuspecting victims. Janus had seen people choose quiet violence and he was happy to be of service if it meant a little extra money in his pocket. There was nothing wrong with someone telling their mother in law they hated her as long as she never understood the message.
"I believe that's something I can do for you, but I'm going to need a little more information. For example, who is this for? If it's for a family friend I would probably choose different flowers than something for an ex-lover." Janus looked the man up and down, sizing him up. He had wildly messy hair, like he had slept on it wet, and the strands were all dyed a variety of greens. However, despite the unkempt nature of his hair, he looked put together in a strange sort of way. There was beauty in his chaos.
"It's for my twin brother. He's not a bad guy but he also has his head stuck up his own ass. He has this play thing tonight and I want to get him something nice, but I also want to tell him to fuck off."
That was a lot of mixed and complicated feelings which made choosing flowers just a bit harder. Janus drummed his fingers on the counter as he thought about what would make the right impression. “What about Dandelions for nuisance, Candytufts for indifference, Buttercups for childishness, Meadowsweet for uselessness and since it seems like you do care enough for your brother to be getting a bouquet, Daisies for joy.”
The other man laughed a bit. “Am I that easy to read?”
"I'm just good at my job."
The man was blushing a bit but his smile was spread wide across his face. “Yeah, that sounds perfect. Could you do it today? I probably should have preordered this shit but I didn’t even know if I wanted to get him flowers. I thought about teasing him and getting him a bunch of fake snakes, or a bouquet of dildos but I also gotta make sure not to piss my mom off.”
“Completely fair, I had an order cancelled so I have time today. If you come back in an hour I’ll have it prepared for you.” Janus already had the boutique designed in his mind, the mix of white and yellow would look bright and cheerful but it would also feel slightly off putting in a dressing room for a play. It would probably feel exactly the way this man wanted.
“Perfect, you’re a life saver. My name’s Remus BT-dubs, and I’ll pay for this now so I don’t leave you hangin. But the price, I’m not made of money.” He was shuffling around in his pockets nonetheless and Janus realized he almost expected the man to pull out a credit card just as much as he expected a wad of unfolded dollar bills.
“I pride myself in pricing well for my skills and labor but also decently affordable.” He wrote down a number, passing it to Remus who looked it over before nodding.
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure I can afford that,” He smiled, finally pulling out a wallet which somehow wasn't what Janus expected. That seemed to organized for a man of this chaos. “And you didn’t give me your name. Should I just call you pretty boy?”
‘Pretty’ Janus mouthed, eyebrow quirked as he looked at Remus. The man was lost to his own world as he attempted to pull out the money he needed and Janus watched him, head tilted to the side.
“I’m very careful about who I give my name out to, however, I’m sure if you try hard enough you’ll be able to find it.”
“Challenge accepted.” The man slammed down the cash with a brilliant grin that was also a bit twisted. Janus felt his heart jump and he straightened his shoulders, eyebrow quirked curiously. Remus just continued to smile so without another word he got together the order form and passed it over.
Remus signed, waved, and turned to leave. “See you later, Venus.”
Venus was the name of a god. Janus was the name of a god. There was no way he had figured it out already and made a joke based off of his name in that short time, right? No, it had to be something else. Not to insult the intelligence of a man Janus just met, but he didn't know anyone who could have figured out his name in that short of a time frame and then make a joke about it, not unless they already knew. Janus sighed and shook his head, walking to the back. It didn't matter. This guy was just a guy and whether he knew Janus' name or not wouldn't affect anything. Janus didn't flirt with patrons... well, not seriously. He might flirt a little bit to get a tip, but he wasn't going to go out with anyone. Anyway, he had a boutique to make and it was going to be the best bouquet he had ever made, not for any important reason. Just to prove a point. He slipped on his bright yellow gloves and grabbed his clippers.
An hour later, on the dot, Remus returned. He had cleaned up a bit, wearing a suit that was just slightly loose on him, hair slicked back and no longer raging against propriety. His smile was still wild, and Janus felt his chest grow tighter, a sensation he promptly forced down. “Hey Venus, did you get my flowers done?”
“I did, but why Venus?" He had spent far longer thinking about it than he would have liked to admit. When he was arranging flowers all he was left with were his thoughts and he couldn't wrap his brain about why that one. Why Venus? Janus leaned his face into his hand, elbow rested on the countertop that separated the two of them. He had to know, but he didn't want to seem desperate for the information.
"Y'know, like Venus Flytrap, because you lure them all in. I feel like you've got a dangerous streak and you're more than willing to strike if you need to." Remus smirked at Janus, something devilish that sent an imperceptible shiver down his spine. He was thankful he was good at hiding his emotions otherwise he would give away far too much to a man he just met. "And I think Venus is a bit more appropriate than Janus. After all, you are very sexually desirable."
Despite the cackle that filled his shop after Remus' comment, Janus found himself blushing more than he could control, pushing his long hair behind his ear before he once again schooled his face into nonchalance.
"Not tryin to make you uncomfortable," Remus said, "But I also meant what I said. You're pretty hot." He reached for the bouquet, and Janus almost reached out to meet him but it was too soon. They had just met each other.
"You didn't make uncomfortable, in fact you would have to do something quite outrageous to phase me." Janus looked at his nails, though his true focus was on the man just past his fingers.
"Is that a challenge?"
Did he want it to be a challenge? Did he want to see this man again or leave him as just another customer that occasionally came around. Who was he kidding. Self delusion wasn't his forte, so he smirked and tilted his head to the side. "I do ask you don't loiter here, I do need the space for customers." Would Remus get it? Would he understand the subtlety in Janus' smile or would he be just as dense as the recipients of most of Janus' flowers.
He got it, if Remus' smile was anything to go by. He pulled the bouquet close, hoisting it into his arms. "Alright, I'll show you what I've got." He looked Janus up and down. "Let the games begin." He didn't linger after that, waving a bit with his shoulders before pushing the door open with his foot. He wasn't supposed to flirt with customers, but this was fine. It would all be fine. He was sure Remus wasn't actually going to come back, so few people did when they made declarations like that. Their never got ahold of them and they disappeared from Janus' life.
The distraction had been nice at least.
Cleaning up the counter top, Janus looked at the door. It was closing time.
Two weeks later Janus' bell rang and he was surprised by the voice that greeted him. "Alright Venus, what can I get for my mom, something simple and beautiful so she thinks I'm a good son. Also, maybe something that if she looked up the flowers she would actually think I liked her, cuz I kinda do but y'know, I'm not gonna say that."
For a moment Janus looked at him, mouth hanging open. He was back? Remus had come back. Janus snapped his mouth shut to think. "Tiger Lilies," He started "They mean strength, Burgundy roses for commitment, and white hydrangeas. Hydrangea's typically mean family and white specifically can mean abundance. Overall it's a sappy combination that would make most people feel like they were cared about."
Remus nodded, "Make it so flower man, and while you're at it, throw in something for yourself." He was smiling that impish smile and Janus rolled his eyes, turning around so it would be far easier to hide the curl of his own lips. He had come back. That was a first and Janus was not going to admit how many times he had thought about Remus over the past fortnight. The other man was entertaining, at least that was the easiest thing to call it. He sparked an interest in Janus and sure he wasn't supposed to flirt with customers but fuck it. He was going to play along, at least until Remus walked away.
“What could I buy from my own flower shop that I don’t already have?”
“Good point,” Remus tilted his head. “What about something that says new beginnings? Or maybe fresh starts?”
Janus smiled, “I’ve always been fond of daffodils.”
“Good, one of those, and you can bring it on our date?” Remus wiggled his eyebrows. Another surprise. That was a bit forward wasn't it? What if this guy was actually a murder? That would at least be an interesting story if he survived, right?
"Oh really?" Janus responded, leaning back, "And where exactly am I meeting you on this so called date?"
"I'll pick you up here, take you to all the sites and wonders. By the time we're done you'll be so enamored with me that you won't ever want to leave my side."
Janus rolled his eyes with a slight smirk. "That's a pretty tall order, kidnapping me from my job and expecting me to get into an unknown car."
"Oh no, we'll be taken the bus. Cars are so espensy, and I'd rather spend my money on experiences."
"And can you truly show me a good time from a bus?"
Remus chuckled. "Of course I can, I'm a good time all on my own." He finished filling out his order form, leaving the money on the counter without asking how much it was. He did, however, turn around to plow Janus a kiss. "See you tomorrow."
Janus looked down at the money that was obviously too much for the order. He sighed and picked up the form, running his fingers along it as he read it over. It would be hard not to fall for this man, the way he smirked and smiled as if he knew exactly how things were going to turn out, or better yet, he didn't care about the outcomes. There was something else written at the bottom of the form, put outside the bounds of any box. A phone number. It was so cliche, so dumb, yet Janus found himself pulling out his phone and typing the number in. He wasn't smitten. He didn't fall that easy, but he was willing to play for a little bit.
So he named the contact Remus, and added a little heart.

A Magician's Mask
AU: Circus
CW: Alcohol Usage
WC: 3,574
Date: 12/17/2023 (That's all for today until after I clean my kitchen for the Holidays!)
Patton felt safe in Roman's arms, gently pressed against the canvas fabric of the circus tent as the two of them exchanged soft kisses. This was fairly normal for them, praising each other on their acts and swapping sweet secrets hidden behind the main tent. Even Janus walking up on them was fairly normal. He had seen the two of them making out far more times than he could count, and he didn't mind one bit.
"Ring master," Roman drawled, pulling back only enough to allow Patton an escape.
"I guess I should expect a lion tamer to be ballsy, kissing out in the open like this." Janus took a step forward, giving Roman a kiss first then Patton before he stepped back again, leaning on his cane. "I have a job for you. Well, more for Patton then for you."
"Rude," Roman pouted, shifting to give Patton a bit more space. "And why is it I'm not included in this special job?"
"Because your social skills suck," Janus deadpanned before fondly rolling his eyes. "We have a new start." He tapped his gloved fingers against his cane, using it more for stabilization than he'd probably like to admit. "However, he's a bit shy. I figured Patton, out of the two of you, would make the best impression and be the least likely to leave him wanting to run away from us."
"Rude," Roman repeated and Janus stepped forward, leaning in closer to Roman. "I could give you a special assignment as well, but that requires you behave." There was a shiver in the air, a lingering quiet that was broken by Patton stepping in to save the day.
"I'd be happy to look after the new kiddo, how old is he? Oh! Did we finally get to adopt a youngen? You know I've always wanted a kid." He clapped his hands together and Janus moved back once again, smiling at his boyfriend's enthusiasm.
"No, he is about our age so I wouldn't consider him young. However, maybe we can kidnap you a kid in the next city we stop in."
"Now that wouldn't be very nice," Patton pouted and Janus just smirked again.
"I know."
"You're incorrigible," Roman waved his arm, pulling Janus in, though really Patton knew he was giving Janus plenty of opportunity to move on his own so he wouldn't mess up his knee. "Don't worry Patton, I'll keep our temptress from attempting to hurt any of the children who visit us."
"How sweet, and how do you intend to control me when you can't pull your thoughts away from kissing Patton."
"Not true," Roman whispered, "I can easily distract you by switching my attention." He leaned in to kiss Janus, stealing his lips and breath. The two slipped into their own twist of subduction and romance, so Patton decided to slip away, allowing them privacy to flirt and canoodle. He did have a job after all.
It wasn't often they got new people in their little family. Janus was very picky about who he let in but he always had a reason. Even if with Roman it had mostly been because 'the pretty boy is hot'. Patton giggled at the thought as he made his way to the center of their encampment.  Janus set the wagons in a way that encouraged cooperation and collaboration. New people were almost always put at the center so it would be easy for them to reach out and ask for help if necessary. Once they were a bit more incorporated into the group, the wagons would get rearranged again. Sure that could be a bit difficult for people who didn't like the spot light, but who in the circus was afraid of a little attention? Knocking on the door to what served as their spill over wagon normally, Patton waited with bated breath, curious about who Janus had hired. He hadn't heard about anyone applying but sometimes these things were a bit sudden and the sudden ones were almost always the most interesting. They had a lot of the standard circus acts but Janus had a knack for finding things that wouldn't work in a typical circus and incorporating them here. He had also started doubling up on performers so they could run longer shows without burning people out. The circus was getting big and Patton loved every moment of it. "Hello, I'm Patton, part of our patented welcoming committee!"
The door opened to a tall man, probably only a few inches shorter than Roman, looking curiously at Patton. Where Roman was bulky and strong, this man was thin and whispy. He had an air of magic to him and Patton was excited to soak it all in. "Was that supposed to be a pun?"
"It was, I think I'm rather punny." Patton could see the way this new man fought back a smile attempting to remain serious and stoic.
"Interesting. My name is Logan, I believe Janus spoke of you. You are the trapeze artist, is that correct?"
"Yep, that's me, I had rather lofty goals in life don't you think."
Logan brought his hand to his mouth and coughed but Patton could see the hints of a smile just past his pointer finger. "I believe anyone who is willing to throw themselves through the air is a very adventurous and entertaining person." Logan cleared his throat, putting his hands behind his back. "Though I am curious as to what brings you to my door step. You said something about being the welcoming committee?"
"Yep!" Patton clapped his hands together. "It's my job to show you around, make sure you're familiar with the space and introduce you to everyone else in our circus. We keep getting bigger every year so if there are people you don't know it's okay." He gave Logan a reassuring smile and held out his hand. "Do you want to come with me?" For just a moment, Logan hesitated. His fingers reached out but then curled in. Was there a reason he was hesitant to reach out to an offered hand? Eventually, Logan nodded, but his hands behind his back, leaving Patton with far more questions than answers. Maybe he could sweet talk Janus into giving him more details later. For now though, he was playing host!
Patton took his time showing Logan around, trying to leave the other man plenty of space to talk about things. He didn't seem like the talkative type, at least not anymore. He would open his mouth to say something but then close his lips tight. It was disappointing, especially when bits of his personality would show through. Via, the daughter to one of their ushers, had almost tripped and Logan quickly caught her and helped her up. He gave her a soft smile before producing a handkerchief with the flick of his hand. He dusted off her cheeks before offering her the cloth. That wasn't the only trick Logan had up his sleeves, and it wasn't the only time he helped someone without a second though. Patton could see how the close up magic would work well to stir up a buzz in the crowd, but had Janus known about the compassion?
"Patton?" Someone was calling his name. Oops, he hadn't realized how lost in thought he was. Patton looked up, catching Logan's eyes. They were such a deep blue, far deeper than Patton remembered from early but then again he hadn't been this close. His cheeks dusted red as he lost his words. "Apologies for invading your space, but it seems like you wandered off there, metaphorically. Is everything alright?" Logan was so close, so incredibly close and Patton wasn't used to people being this close and towering over him. Most people treated him with kid gloves, the only two people who towered over him and didn't worry about the impression they might make was Janus and Roman. They towered over him with smirks and teasing quips, but there was concern and compassion in Logan's voice. Oh, shit. Would Janus be upset if he fell for the new guy on the first day?.
"Oh yeah, I'm good kiddo, perfectly okay. Just got a bit distracted." He took a step back, almost tripping on one of the tent stakes but Logan caught him, arm wrapped around the small of Patton's back, his other hand in Patton's. That was not helping his problem right now.
"Please be careful, the human body is surprisingly resilient when properly taken care of but it's best not to put yourself in situations where you may get injured."
Patton just nodded slowly, mouth hanging open slightly. "Well, Think that ends our tour." His mouth felt so dry and the lump in his throat had grown bigger.
"That may be best, you are looking a bit flushed. I hope you haven't gotten too hot out in this sun."
"No, no, I'm good," Patton muttered, giving the best smile he could. "Please let me know if you need anything, kay?"
Logan nodded slowly, gently taking a step back from Patton. "Of course, thank you for your kindness."
[Section Break]
Roman wasn't avoiding the newbie, honest, it was just that... well, Logan wasn't really his type. The man was quiet, stoic, and walked around as if he were a ghost. Sure there was probably a reason, no one moved that quietly without having a reason, but it still felt weird. The whole situation was made worse by the way Patton was enamored. He talked so much about the different things that Logan was doing, the magic, the pulling in of crowds, the pulling of his own weight with chores, it all made Roman feel a bit insecure. What was so good about this Logan character anyway? He had Patton's approval, and obviously he had Janus', but that wasn't enough.
They were going to be heading to the next city tomorrow morning, so this was their last night to celebrate, yet Logan was sitting just far enough that he wasn't part off the group. What did Patton see in someone so antisocial? Roman had a few drinks in his system, and just enough liquid courage to turn off his impulse control. He was finally going to tell Logan off. "How dare you steal my boyfriend's attention? So smug and so smart. I bet you think you're all that, don'tcha?" That wasn't what he meant, right? It was because Logan was so sullen, but he was smart. He had helped Patton with a few tricks to make them safer and he had actually discussed methods for helping Janus' leg hurt less during performances. Was it really his intelligence that irritated Roman, or just that Logan had taken Patton's attention?
If the look on Logan's face was any indication, he was surprised at Roman's observation. Did he not realized how enamored Patton was? How dare he be that stupid? "Apologies, I'm a bit lost, by your boyfriend, do you mean Patton?"
"Obviously, yeah there's also Jannie, but you couldn't have him if you tried." A look of something crossed Logan's face, something Roman couldn't read in his inebriated state. "Jannie's too smart to fall for a... for a... meanie."
What he could understand, were the words Logan spoke next. "I apologize that you see me as mean. However, I'm aware I can't have Janus, as I'm aware that Patton loves you. You won't lose him to me." There was a gravity behind his statement that soaked into Roman's core, a memory of his brother looking listfully out to the ocean which was always just out of reach for the two of them. Logan had turned to look at Janus and Patton, curled up together as Patton tried to feed Janus a marshmallow he was pretending he didn't like. Still, Janus occasionally took bites from it when Patton pretended he wasn't looking. Roman followed Logan's gaze, watching the scene and feeling the warmth fill him. He smiled at the two of them. He almost forgot he was standing next to Logan.
"You should rest," Logan's voice was smooth and despite not being as deep. Roman wasn't jealous when Janus and Patton were cute or when they talked about each other, so what made Logan different? And what was with Logan's tone. It was heavy. It tasted wrong. "Let me take you back over to the two of them."
"And you won't steal my boyfriend?"
"I won't steal your boyfriend," Logan agreed, putting his hand on Roman's back slowly leading him toward the fire.
"What about stealing me?"
There was a pause, a stutter in Logan's even steps before he continued. "I had the notion that you didn't particularly like me?"
Roman shrugged. "Who knows, you're softer than I thought. I'm never wrong, but maybe I could know you more. I'll debate you when the world is less woooh. If you win you can kiss me."
"We can discuss the details when you're sober." That felt like a rejection and Roman pouted, right up until he focused on Janus and Patton again. Throwing his arms open he stumbled toward the two of them.
"My loves!"
[Section Break]
As Logan watched Roman sit down next to Janus, leaning into him and spinning an epic tale about defending Patton's honor, Logan slipped away, fingers playing at the shirt buttons on his wrist. He had expected Roman not to like him. He was everything Logan could be, loud, vibrant, creative, he just hadn't expected Roman to think he was trying to take away Janus and Patton. Sure, he was closer to the two of them than anyone else but that was because they were they two who had reached out, and Logan was a bit too nervous to talk to the others.
When he had first asked Janus if he could join them, Janus had asked Logan why he wanted to join the circus and his answer had been the only obvious one. Logan wanted to find a place where he belonged. He wasn't convinced this was the right place. It had been nice thus far but he couldn't get into the groove of it. Everyone here was so full of life, and Logan was.... he couldn't break out of his own silence.
It was hard for him to relax and let go of all of his fears of failure. Watching Roman, Patton, and Janus, not to mention the others, Logan wondered if he'd be able to go back to the way he was when he was younger, seeing the world through the eyes of childlike wonder, asking questions that never had answers, existing without reservation. He grabbed a coin from his nightstand, sitting on his bed as he flipped the metal disk along his fingers. There were times when he almost let it slip, almost allowed himself to speak freely. There were times when it felt like the chains of his past were going to let him go. However, as soon as his lips would curl to speak he would hear the voices in his head, the cruel jabs at him being annoying, over bearing, and unwanted. It was hard to fit in when he was playing a part, but he couldn't give up his mask. He couldn't risk people hating him for who truly he was. If they hated a watered down version of him, that was alright. He hated himself too.
With a sigh, Logan set the coin back down and lied back in his bed, looking up at the ceiling. Janus had hired him to do close up magic, and Logan was good at that, but he had said something that still rung in Logan's ears. "We all have masks, the question is are you happy with the one you're wearing." Was he?
A knock at his door pulled him out of his thoughts and Logan pushed himself up, dusting down his rumpled clothes. He walked over to the door, opening it up, words dying on his lips as he saw Janus and his all too knowing smirk.
"May I come in?" Why was Janus here? Shouldn't he be curled up with Roman and Patton at this point? The night was beautiful, if Logan had a lover he would want to be in their arms under this sky.
"Of course." Logan took a step back, giving Janus the space to enter. "I'm sure you are aware there isn't much room for you to sit but feel free to take a seat on the bed."
"Thank you, Logan, always so considerate." Janus walked over to the bed before slowly sitting down, rubbing his leg at the knee. "I wanted to apologize for Roman, I'm aware of how... protective he can be but please know it comes from a place of care and not a place of hostility."
That was obvious. The care Roman had for both Patton and Janus shone through all of his actions, the way he held his breath every time Patton did a stunt, the way he led Janus to a chair after each performance. Logan had been watching all of them carefully, silently observing the life they had built together. He had been jealous. No matter how loud Roman was, no matter how much Patton didn't understand, no matter how secretive Janus could be, they all still loved each other. The three of them accepted each other just as they were. "I took nothing he said to heart. Alcohol has a way of getting to all of us and I know his affections for Patton run high." Patton had been one of the best parts of being here at the circus, and also the worst. He thought he was a comedian with all of his puns, and while Logan had, at one time, loved a good play on words, he found himself groaning internally at Patton. For so long he had been told that was a low brow form of comedy, but it was cute, wasn't it? It was a fight between who he wanted to be and who he had been told he had to be.
"Yes, his affections for Patton do run high, and he can be a bit possessive despite us having an open relationship. More than once I've had a talk with him about scaring off people I want to pursue. Should I tell him to back off from you as well?"
There was a purr in Janus' voice that Logan didn't understand and he furrowed his brow. "I don't believe there is a need for that. If my understanding is correct, Patton is simply being friendly. He acts similar around me as he does around others in the troupe."
Janus chuckled, shaking his head. "I'm fairly sure your understanding is wrong, but I also wasn't asking about your connection with Patton."
Logan furrowed his brow as he looked down at Janus. "You are Roman's only other partner, correct? I..." It was like being struck with sudden understanding. "Do you have an interest in me?" That was news to him. He assumed he had just been a form of amusement for Janus.
"It's interesting. You are extremely perceptive, you approach people who will be interested in the tricks you have to show. You gage moods, attitudes, all in a blink, and yet you haven't noticed what is right in front of you." Janus stood up, leaning on his cane as he took a step forward. "I am interested in you. I'm interested in the smile you try to hide when Patton makes a joke, I'm interested in the way you strategize, I'm interested in who you are when you let your walls down." Logan stepped back as Janus approached, back hitting the wall as his breath caught in his throat. "Just to make things extremely clear. I want to pursue you. Will you let me?"
Logan hesitated. He didn't know how to respond. What if this was all some cruel joke to show him how much of an outsider he really was? Logan caught that anxious thought and tried to pull it away from his heart. Janus wasn't like that. Janus wasn't like the people he knew in his past, but he hadn't thought the others were like that either. He would have to sleep on it. "May I... May I have time to think?"
Taking a step back, finally giving Logan room to breathe, Janus nodded. "Of course, but don't think I am the only one on pursuit," He smiled. "Oh, something I might add. Roman is insufferably jealous, but it's not usually about people his partners are pursuing but rather about people he wants to be pursued by. Just a hint."
"Masks are useful," Janus whispered, "But if you never take it off, you'll forget who you are." He nodded his head to the door and Logan slid away, giving Janus the space to exit. "It can be hard to take a mask off, but it's worth it when you find the right people. I know from experience." It was a strange bit of wisdom to leave Logan with, but he did leave, closing the door behind him leaving Logan standing there as a blushing mess.
He wanted to be seen. He desperately wanted to be seen.
But was he ready for it?
Looking back at the coin on his nightstand, Logan went to turn out his light.
There was only one way to tell.

Falling For You
AU: Fantasy
CW: Injury
WC: 1,595
Date: 12/16/2023
"Stay by my side," Janus called to Patton and Roman, completely dropping the titles he should have been using. This was so typical of him, waiting until the moment there were no onlookers and dropping any respect he was supposed to show the two kings. Honestly Roman didn't mind. For the past decade, Janus had been Roman's guard, protecting him whether he was on the ground or in flight. Even before he was a guard, he had been the kid that snuck in to see Roman. They had always been by each other's side, and why Roman was younger, he had naively believed he and Janus were fated to be together. He dreamed of Janus sweeping him off his feet, making a snide remark and whisking him away to the unknown, away to a place where they weren't separated by their class and they could be together without sideways glances.
However, that wasn't the role of a guard, and it certainly wasn't the place for a royal. Roman had the responsibility to carry on his family lineage, to hold his head high and be above reproach when it came to society. That didn't mean he stopped craving Janus' deep voice whispering in his ear. It just meant he got much better at hiding it.
Patton, Roman's husband, wasn't nearly as experienced in the ways of denying his emotions. Patton wore his heart on his sleeve and it was beautiful, but dangerous. He attempted to hide his sadness and pain but it was easy enough to see it, almost as easy to see the blooming curiosity his husband had for their guard. Janus had a way with words, a way of peaking people's interest and twisting them around him. That was how Roman had fallen, so completely enamored with the coiling twists of Janus' tongue that he hadn't realized he was ensnared until it was too late.
"My kings!" Janus' voice was loud, screaming through the wind as he threw himself and his alicorn in front of Patton and Roman. The blast came soon after, rocking Janus back. It felt like a slow spell had been cast as Janus slowly tipped off his mount, empty eyes connecting with Roman's before time sped up and Janus was free falling.
"No!" Patton shouted just after, pushing himself from the safety of Roman's arms and diving into the sky to grab Janus. The were wrapped together, billowing cloaks in the wind as Patton struggled to grab his wand.
There wasn't enough time.
 There wasn't enough time!
Roman grabbed the reins hard, steering towards the two rushing to the ground.
There wasn't time to think.
He had to act.
Matching his descent with theirs he scooped both into his arms, almost missing Patton's hand. They were safe. He was holding them.
Roman leveled out but there was still a threat. Bolts of magic fired at the three of them while he tried to steer away. His chest was tight, running on pure adrenaline until he landed.
"Patton get him somewhere safe." Roman jumped off the alicorn, pulling his own wand out of his pocket.
"But Roman, what are you-"
"I've got this handled." Landing might not have been the best strategy. He had less area to maneuver around this way, but he couldn't risk falling. He wasn't going to die here. He wouldn't leave either of them behind. Roman turned to look at Patton, showing him the softest smile he could manage. Was he frightened? Sure. Was he concerned about winning this fight? Possibly. However, nothing would be worse than him losing the two people he loved. For a brief moment Roman entertained the idea of being a gallant hero, of letting his name go down in history for saving Patton and Janus. The two of them would get together and Janus would be taken care of.
No, now wasn't the time for that. He shot Patton another look, and the man swallowed before nodding. He took the reins of the alicorn and flew away into the forest. They would be hard to follow there. Thankfully, the men after them went for the easy prey, flying toward Roman instead of going after Patton and Janus. There were four riders, two with wands and two with swords. His hand itched to reach for his own sword but he had to be strategic about this. The ones with the wands posed the most problems but if the two with the swords got any closer that could change. Roman waved his wand above his head, casting it down and creating a wall of ice between the two groups hoping to buy Patton and Janus more time. He then whistled for Janus' mount who had been aimlessly flying in circles without a rider to guide him. The Alicorns were very intelligent creatures, they knew when it was time to work and when it was time to play. Roman was lucky the bridal hadn't been knocked off as well or he might not have had a mount at all.
"I'm surprise the four of you managed to knock my guard off his mount." They didn't speak the two with magic shooting at him but Roman was able to dodge with minor injures, shivering at the cold that latched onto his leg. "Your skills pale in comparison." Maybe taunting them wasn't the best idea. It was important he keep their attention. He could see the way they grew angrier with his jabs and the ice wall shattered. Thankfully just in time for Roman to throw himself onto the Alicorn and take to the skies. Patton and Janus were decently far away now. They should be safe. It was time to fight for real.
He wished he could spare the griffins, the chosen mounts for his pursuers, but it was always dangerous to attempt to take in creatures that had been tamed by the enemy. Roman had to act without mercy. He slung spells at his pursuers, felling those who would try to hurt him, and when his mana was drained, he pulled out his sword, ready to attack with the horn of his alicorn and also with the fury of his own blade. The sun was setting by the time he was able to land. He allowed the alicorn to lead, knowing they were often drawn to others of their species. They walked instead of flying, making their way through the forests that protected the city, stumbling through the dark with only each other. As the last lights of day faded, Roman saw a light, a small campfire off in the distance.
"Patton you have to let me go!" Janus was shouting, his voice pitched higher then it normally was a sound he only made when consumed by panic. "He could be in danger."
"You don't think I know that?" Patton sounded like he had been crying. "But he didn't want you to get hurt."
"And he also doesn't have many brain cells."
"That's not an appropriate thing to say about your king," Roman said as he walked into the clearing, smiling softly when he saw both of them were alright. Patton was already rushing toward him and Janus was straightening himself out, shoulders back, hands pressing down his guard uniform. It was like watching someone put on a carefully curated mask. Janus had always been good at that, but that only worried Roman more.
As soon as his husband was in his arms, Roman hugged Patton tightly. His eyes never really left Janus who cleared his throat upon realizing the intensity of his king's gaze.
"I am thankful you're alright," he hesitated, voice hanging in the air before Janus bowed, whispering, "your highness." That simply wouldn't do. It was only the three of them and Roman preferred the man who argued and challenged him to one that quietly followed orders. Gently putting his hands on Patton's shoulders, Roman pushed him away, kissing his cheek lightly. He was about to do something they had talked about for a while and outside the confines of the castle and society, Roman was willing to take a risk. He had almost lost Janus today. He wasn't risking this again. Roman marched over, twigs snapping under his feet.
He was face to face with Janus, in a manner of speaking, but the other man was still bowing, head dipped in reverence. That really wouldn't do. Roman lifted up Janus' chin, tilting him toward the sky.
"Come now Roman, I know you won't behead me for such a simple faux pas," he was trying to smile, but there was a hint of doubt in his eyes, a hint of something else. How could Janus doubt him? After so long?
"Will you shut up for once in your life?" He leaned forward, kissing Janus with as much heat as care, pulling the man in closer as he second hand went to explore Janus' body. Roman wanted to touch him as much as he wanted to verify the knight was okay.
When they finally separated for air, Janus was smirking, a look of love sickness in his eyes. "That wasn't an appropriate thing for a king to do," He whispered and Patton giggled, causing Janus to blush just a hint.
"I don't care, you aren't allowed to leave."
"Can I have a turn?" Patton asked, resting one hand on Roman's arm and the other on Janus'. He had a pout on his lips that barely hide a smile. They would figure this out together, society be damned. Roman wasn't going to lose him.

The Saint and the Manipulator
AU: Vampires
CW: Biting
WC: 1,962
Date: 12/14/2023
"Look at him Jannie, he just looks cute enough to eat," Patton cooed, watching the man at the bar mixing drinks for other people. His fingers were long, almost spider like and his shirt was wide enough at the neck to show off his warm flesh.
"Patience," Janus hissed, drawing a line from Patton's neck to his chin. For the past few months he had been talking with the bartender, slowly getting him to open up to the ideas of the occult. It hadn't been hard, Virgil was apparently an avid conspiracy theorist and so when Janus started spouting off about Vampires, the bartender had listened with rapt attention. Everything working out in their favor, Janus was enjoying Virgil's company and Virgil seemed excited by the possibility of something so macabre. It had been a long road preparing the human, but everything was going according to plan. Janus had to move one more piece into play, Patton. His husband was a joy and a sweetheart, full of wonder for the world around him. Unfortunately, as a vampire, Patton had a thirst that couldn't be satiated. Unlike most stories, vampires weren't reckless killing machines, at least not all of them. Much like humans, they had the capacity to be evil or kind and though Janus didn't believe such labels were helpful, he did hope others understood, as a human he could be far crueler than he actually was. Patton, on the other hand, was far kinder than most humans Janus met.
"Oh I hope we get his consent, I would love to have him as part of our family."
Patton was probably a big reason why Janus was the way he was. Being such a kind and open hearted man, even as a vampire he wouldn't drink from someone he didn't have permission from. The first time he had drank from Janus he had begged, pleaded in a dark alley. Janus had only been so gracious to shut him up, but when Patton had finished drinking the smile on his face had been captivating. He had complimented Janus' health and given him advice for his future. It had been such a strange encounter that Janus had gone back again and again until they were linked. Vampires could get blood from any random humans, but it wasn't nearly as fulfilling as blood from someone bound to a vampire. If a human agreed, their soul could be intertwined, giving them the life span to stay by the vampire's side while also promising their health to the vampire. This bond was a neigh unbreakable, which meant one couldn't go into it lightly. Janus had given his life to Patton over a century ago, but Patton's hunger continued to grow. This was his way of helping his husband. He had been laying the groundwork to woo the bartender. He would later take on the role of manipulative villain, but he would do anything for Patton's sake.
"Last call, you two," Virgil said, walking over to their table and leaving the bar unattended. It seemed like most of the regulars had already cleared out leaving only a few stragglers behind.
"I think we're good in terms of alcohol, but might we have a conversation once you're off work? Patton and I are curious about a few things." Not a lie, not the truth.
"Oh, so this is the infamous Patton," Virgil held out his hand. "Jay has told me a lot about you, give him a few drinks and he actually can't shut the fuck up about you. I've been curious."
Patton giggled, covering his mouth to hide his fangs. "You are a sweet talker. He has mentioned you a lot as well. I think he and I are going to have to have a stern talking to because he undersold how pretty you are."
Virgil blushed, heat and blood rising to his face. "Well, that's good to hear. I have to start cleaning the bar, but I'll tell the others you're walking me to my car, that way they should leave you be even after we close."
"Thanks Kiddo." Virgil raised his eyebrow at that but didn't say anything as he started walking away.
As soon as he was out of earshot, Patton grabbed Janus' leg trying to control his obvious giddiness. "He's handsome, and that voice, and that smell." Patton seemed to melt a bit and Janus wrapped his arms around his husband, pulling him close.
"Yes, I'm aware he's pretty. I figured he was just your type."
Patton giggled, "Why because I like dramatic emos who hide their true feelings with sarcastic quips?"
Janus pretended to look offended as he put his hand to his chest. Patton only laughed, leaning up to kiss Janus' chin. "I love you," he whispered.
Janus would never admit that he melted a bit too, returning Patton's kiss. "You are too saccharine for your own good." He kissed Patton's neck, desperately trying not to be obvious about their love and affection for one another. He didn't need Virgil's coworkers to think they were sketchy, lecherous, or anything of the sort. They needed to be seen as a good couple, and good tippers.
It was less than an hour before Virgil and the others had the place cleaned up and shut down. He started walking toward them and the two got out of their chairs, putting them up on the tables like they had seen the others do.
"So, what is it you wanted to talk to me about?" Virgil asked, after walking them both out locking the door behind him. "You're not going to proposition me into your harem are you, Jay?" He asked teasingly, causing Janus to roll his eyes. That wasn't what he was planning on doing but he also understood that it almost seemed like that was exactly what he was doing. He was asking Virgil to potentially be a blood donor for Patton for the rest of his life, but all in due time.
"Actually, I wanted to tell you a secret, Pat, darling, would you like to show him your teeth?"
Patton looked to Janus for confirmation before he opened his mouth, allowing his fangs to slide out. Virgil's mouth fell, and he floundered for words. Janus let him process, making sure that he and Patton were at least 5 feet away so Virgil could feel like he could escape. No one could truly escape a vampire, but Patton also wasn't a hunter.
"Alright, so those are either really expensive, or..." He looked at Janus as if hoping to hear that it was all a lie, that Janus was playing a prank.
"I am fully human, but my husband..." Janus allowed his sentence to taper off, allowing Virgil to fill in the rest.
"He's a vampire, and you... you knew?"
"That's why I was so knowledgeable about them." Janus pulled Patton into him and as expected, Patton nuzzled his neck gently. "You're not in any danger from him, Patton is very sweet and never drinks from someone unless he has permission. However, it is an experience."
Janus watched as Virgil swallowed, looking over to his car before taking a step forward. "So vampires are real? You aren't just fucking with me? You do seem to like to do that." Virgil countered and Janus nodded.
"An unfortunate trait of mine, but I'm sure Patton would be happy to demonstrate as long as you don't mind watching. It can get a bit... intense." There was a bout of silence, the three of them standing there waiting for Virgil to make a move. Finally he nodded.
"Yeah, yeah, okay. I need to see this to believe it."
"Are you sure kiddo? You don't have to believe if you want. You could pretend it was a bad dream and go on with your life."
At Patton's suggestion, Virgil shook his head furiously, something Janus also expected. Virgil had anxiety and though he managed it well while he was bartending a discovery like this would haunt him for the rest of his life if he didn't verify it was fake. Then again, finding out it was real would most likely shake him to his core. He would come to them more often for comfort and Janus and Patton would both be waiting with open arms; Patton because he was kind, and Janus because he knew it would be a way to get Virgil to trust them. No other reason.
"Alright, if you're sure." Janus felt Patton shift, hands gently wrapping around his face was Patton looked at him. "May I?" He asked in the sweetest voice. He always started this the same way and it felt like a ritual at this point.
"Always," Janus whispered in response, getting to see Patton's soft shy smile before his head was tilted to the side. Patton didn't just sink his teeth in. He kissed at Janus' neck, sucked a small bruise on the crook to bring the blood to the surface. Then he bit down. It was a brief moment of pain followed by a flood of endorphins. He felt like he was floating, like the whole world disappeared beneath his feet. Janus reached out for Patton, clinging to his arms, fighting the sounds that desperately bubbled from his chest. He was partially aware that Virgil was still here, was still watching them and that was not the thing to think about right now. He moaned out the bartender’s name softly before Patton pulled back, kissing his neck and sealing the wound. He left only a hickey behind.
Vaguely, he could hear Patton speaking and Virgil was saying something as well. This had been the risk of going this route, letting the two of them talk alone. However, if Patton and Virgil were going to fall in love they needed to actually like each other. He was being swept off his feet, cradled in the strong arms of his husband.
"Let me walk you to your car. If you're okay with it, we can talk more tomorrow?" Patton was doing great. He had managed to get them an invite back. Virgil wasn't running away. Janus knew he probably needed to stay awake, to do everything he could to manage the situation, but his head felt heavy. Patton's venom was still coursing through his system, desperately pulling him into a relaxed state. Elevated heart rates meant more blood, but it also meant a higher chance of someone dying and though there were enough humans now that culling the population wouldn't have a dramatic effect, that hadn't always been the case.
Janus had done the research, Janus knew what was needed to keep Patton safe, to keep him healthy. Janus knew why things were happening, but he couldn't access it all his brain was too fuzzy.
"This hit you hard didn't it?" Patton whispered, "Seems like you enjoyed someone else watching you feed me." He sounded more lucid and Janus felt himself falling closer and closer to sleep. "I do really like Virgil, but I think maybe you like him a bit too." Janus felt a slight kiss on his forehead and the warmth of a blanket being pulled over him. "At least I hope you do. You deserve to have a life's companion as much as I do. I'd love to build a little commune where you could have more friends, more family." Patton pushed his hair away from his face before laying down next to Janus.
"Rest, it's okay, honey. I can take over from here. You've done such a good job but it's my turn to care for you."
Janus finally relaxed, allowing sleep to take over. This was why he loved his husband. He was too kind for his own good.

A Tattoo For You
AU: Tattoo Shop
CW: Mention of Family Member Death
WC: 1,237
Date: 12/12/2023
The tattoo chair felt more intimidating than Logan expected, but he knew it had less to do with the pain and more to do with the permanence and going against his parents’ expectations. It was amazing how even as a full grown adult he was desperate for his parents approval, something he knew he wasn't likely to get with this particular stunt. However, Logan couldn't help but smile nervously at the man in front of him, his husband of five years. Janus was covered in tattoos, a canvas of artwork that Logan loved to explore. He had helped Logan come to terms with his conflicting feelings around the adornments and Logan had been happy to cherish each piece of ink as if it were special. Including the little octopus Janus had gotten for losing a dare.
Logan's parents had never approved of tattoos. His grandmother was covered in them. She had been a wild child in her youth and she had truly loved and experienced life. Logan's mother had thought the tattoos were tacky, and his father had insisted that tattoos were a great way to destroy one's future. Logan's grandmother had insisted her tattoos were how she had escaped being eaten by a cannibal.
She had always been strange.
He missed her. He missed her view on life, the way she approached the world, and he missed her guidance.
"She would laugh at your choice in tattoo, and I think she'd really appreciate it," Janus whispered, beginning his preparations. He risked giving Logan's leg a gentle squeeze while his gloves were still off.
"You don't think it's a bit abstract?" It wasn't that Logan needed anyone else to understand why the tattoo was important, but there was part of him that was still worried others would look at him with disgust. He was still fighting his parent's programming even to this day.
"Even if it is abstract, this tattoo design is very you and she would appreciate that." Janus slid his gloves on after washing his hands, double checking the stencil placement.
Logan also looked down at it, despite being upside down, he could see it clearly. It was a realistic drawing of the opportunity rover and the words "it's getting dark". Logan knew those weren't the actual last words of the opportunity rover, but it was one of the last things his grandmother had said to him before she passed away.
The shadows of the night had taken over the city, and Logan followed his grandmother's gaze to the window. "It's getting dark, jelly baby. I think it's time for you to go home."
Logan hesitated, not wanting to leave his grandma's side. Something felt important, poignant even. Her house was on his way home from his summer job, and he had taken to stopping by every day before heading to an empty space. His parents were constantly busy, never having time for dinner or a chat after their day, so it was nice to see a familiar face and have a warm meal. Honestly, it was just nice to be by her side. "I don't want to go," Logan whispered, quoting the titular and heart breaking line from his favorite TV show. His grandma just smiled at him.
"My jelly baby, we all have to go at some point." She stood slowly, walking over to him and giving him a hug. "I'll see you tomorrow, but you need to get home before it's too dark out."
He collapsed into her warmth, holding her closely. "Love you, TS." He pulled back, kissing her head before finally letting go. "I'll see you tomorrow?"
"I'll see you tomorrow."
When Logan saw her the next day, it wasn't really her. Sitting in her lounge chair was the body she left behind, the person she was had disappeared. Logan had lost his grandmother on the same day the opportunity rover had gone out of commission. He wasn't a particularly sentimental person, but he hoped there was a heaven, or that his grandmother had found some kind of peace in the end. On the nights when sleep eluded him, he hoped she was out exploring the stars with Oppy, but that was a hope only he and his husband knew about.
"You're handling this tattoo a lot better than most of my clients." Janus pulled him out of his thoughts, no doubts seeing the tears that were streaming down Logan's face.
"Pain is something I can tolerate," Logan responded, but took in a shuddering breath nonetheless. "However, can we take a quick break?" He had lost track of time and wasn't sure how long Janus had been tattooing him. It must have been a while because the color of the sky had shifted. The reds and oranges of morning were now fading into the lighter blues of day.
Janus had put down the tattoo gun and taken off his gloves, holding out his hand for Logan. He took it immediately. "You are finally letting me tattoo you, and it's something rather sentimental," Janus let his voice trail off, still holding Logan's hand and squeezing it tightly. There wasn't much either could say about this tattoo, it meant the world to Logan but it was also dangerous territory. He wasn't sure he would ever fully heal from the death of his nan but no matter what, Janus was there by his side. "I love you, Logan." His voice was strong in a way Logan desperately needed and Logan pulled Janus in closer.
"I love you too," he whispered, bringing Janus' hand up to his lips. "Thank you for waiting for me to be ready, for not pushing the idea of me having a tattoo."
"It should always be a choice, and I know you, you think everything through with careful consideration. I also knew when you finally got your tattoo, it would be the most important one I've ever done." The rising sun illuminated Janus, his back shining in a halo of gold. Without Janus, Logan was sure he would still be stuck in his grief but he had his husband, he had his dream job, he had a life his nan would be proud of.
Logan smiled, giving Janus another quick squeeze of his hand before slowly pulling back.
He was ready again.
"More important than Remus' transition tattoo."
Janus went to wash his hands and put on a fresh pair of gloves. "More important than Remus' transition tattoo, just don't tell him that. I think he'd be offended." They both knew that Remus wouldn't care he would just act offended. All three of them knew how important this tattoo was to Logan.
Looking down at the half finished ink, Logan flexed his hand. His grandma had been his world, and she had never gotten the chance to meet Janus. He hoped she understood that he took her advice and chose his partner well. He had been meticulous. He had had so many walls that he genuinely believed no one would ever break them down.
Allowing his eyes to slide up to his husband who was carefully putting on his new gloves, making sure everything was sanitized, Logan knew. This man who had carefully deconstructed every safeguard Logan had put around his heart...
His nan would have approved.
She would have liked Janus and having him be the one to do her dedication tattoo.
She would have liked that too.

The Model
AU: College, Artists
CW: Non descriptive nudity
WC: 1,550
Date: 12/12/2023
Honestly, when Roman signed up to be a nude model, he assumed it was going to be an ego boost, people staring at his form, drawing his superior figure. He didn't expect it to be surprisingly grounding. The artists didn't look at a whole person. He was just a thing to be drawn. After one of the sessions he had actually asked about their technique and they explained what they saw. Instead of seeing him as a full person he was a set of muscles. He was a shadow in the light. He was more of himself, and less. Roman went from thinking he was going to be their new star to realizing most of them didn't even see him as a human, at least not when his clothes were off and it was sobering and interesting. However, that moment came with another. Each artist saw him differently and thus, he started looking at the artists. Each of them had their own quirks, their own stories and there was an intertwined story that caught his attention.
Two times a week, for about an hour each, Roman would let his eyes linger on the two artists in the back. He focused on their dynamic on the way the both weakened and strengthened each other. He had yet to learn either of their names, all he knew was one of them had purple fringe that he pinned up when he drew, and the other had beautifully long blonde hair that he meticulously tied back with two non art pencils. Roman had taken to calling them purple and blonde.
Purple was intense when he sketched, brow furrowed and lip held tightly between his lips. He second guessed every line and movement. Blonde didn't help that anxiety. Blonde liked to tease Purple, pointing out his mistakes and flaws until Purple eventually snapped at him and jabbed him with a pencil. That normally caused the lead to break, which would cause Purple to swear and Blonde would provide a new pencil that Purple would begrudgingly take. Their hands lingered for a moment too long and it made Roman's mind wander.
When Blonde sketched, he looked confident in every stroke of his pencil, every movement of his hand but their personalities seemed to swap when it came time to paint. Once brushes were on canvas, Purple would take in a deep breath and there would suddenly be an intense clarity in his eyes. He didn't second guess colors, strokes, or anything of that nature. Honestly, Purple almost looked serene when he was painting. Blonde, however, shook with nervousness, hiding behind a facade of confidence that Roman had started decoding the longer he stared at the two of them. Blonde had faith in his ability to draw but not to paint. Purple wanted his drawings to be perfect, but painting was his escape.
Roman was remiss to admit that his heart started to flutter for the both of them. He had always been a romantic, and watching two people, so desperately involved and in love with their craft, it was intoxicating. There was one major problem.
He was fairly sure Purple and Blonde were dating. If he had only ever seen them in the art class, he wouldn't have guessed. He would have honestly assumed there was a pining but neither had made the first move. However, he had seen them around campus a few times at this point and they were almost always joined at the hip. Still, Roman hoped that one, if not both, were interested. He just hadn't expected to get his answer in the library. Roman had seen the two of them making out in the stacks of books, hidden by the pages rarely checked out at the beginning of the semester. He wasn't even supposed to be there that day, but he had been looking for his brother and there was Blonde, using one of the library step stools to be the same height as Purple, pinning him to the bookshelf kissing him like it was the last thing the two of them would ever do together. Roman gawked, eyes stuck on them for a few moments. He was frozen in place, mouth open as he watched something he knew wasn't for him. He couldn't look away, until purple's eyes were on him. It was like lightening hitting him. Roman turned and walked out of the library, feet speeding him away from the crowded courtyard and the busy hallways. He weaved and maneuvered, working on autopilot until he stood in front of the locked theater. They had finished the fall play a few weeks before he started modeling, it had just been something to give him a bit cash and something fun in between plays. Why did he... how did he fall in love? He didn't know them. Sure he had seen their personalities through their work but he didn't know them. Obviously he didn't because he didn't know they were dating.
"Fuck, I'm so stupid," He said, putting his head in his hands as he slid down the door, letting out a heavy sigh.
"Well it's a good thing I like them dumb." There was a smooth voice that spoke over Roman, two shined black shoes standing in front of him and Roman was ready to turn his embarrassment into anger when his mouth snapped shut. Blonde was standing in front of him, that insufferable smirk on his face. It was the same one he would show purple before handing him a new pencil. Roman wasn't going to be a homewrecker.
"And why is that a good thing? I don't think I ever said anything about liking you."
"Feisty," Blonde smirked. "You're right, I am just making assumptions based on the way you were looking at Virgil and I but I could be wrong." He held out his hand for Roman. "Tell me, am I wrong?"
No, he wasn't wrong but that didn't mean this man had to know that. Roman was about to open his mouth, already standing up and disregarding Blonde's hand when Purple came walking down the hall, no, not Purple, Virgil.
"Jay, why the fuck do you walk so fast?" He was out of breath. "Hey, sorry about him... about that." He was blushing just a bit. It was so minimal Roman could have excused it as the weather, or as Virgil over exerting himself, but maybe Roman was hoping, just a bit, that Virgil was blushing for him.
"You're the model in our class, right?"
"Yes, that was me, and it's quite alright, about um... I shouldn't have been looking. It wasn't very gentlemanly of me."
"Oh, you are the model," Janus said, "I almost didn't recognize you with all of your clothes on."
"Janus," Virgil admonished. "He's just being an asshole. Sorry about him, again."
Roman nodded, unsure of where to go from here, but he was still sitting on the floor so he figured he'd at least stand. Taking Jay's hand he pulled himself up. There was a bit of an awkward silence between the three of them and Roman hated silence. "Not to change the subject but what are the two of you doing here? If you would like to tell me off I'm happy to apologize but otherwise, I am a bit confused."
The two of them looked at each other having a conversation without words before they turned back to Roman.
"Honestly," Janus started, "I enjoy a good voyeur, and you were so polite. Virgil on the other hand wanted to make sure you didn't get the wrong idea. We are polyamorous after all."
"Yeah, we aren't mad or anything. It was a bit embarrassing but... you're good looking, and we're open. So... damn it, I wasn't going to say anything until the last day of class." He was blushing up a storm now and Roman felt his heart jump. "Look, we don't know anything about each other, but do you want to get coffee or something? Like, with me, or with both of us, or even just with Janus. Whatever you're interested in. Cuz, I don't know, it might be cool to get to know you or something like that."
"Yes," Roman said, realizing he was still holding Janus' hand and quickly pulling it away. "Yes, I would enjoy having coffee with the both of you, and like a gentleman, I would be happy to pay."
"Nah, I asked. I'll pay. You can pay for dinner," Virgil's voice was a bit more confident now and Roman smiled, bowing the best he could.
"I would be happy to take the both of you out to dinner to get to know you better."
"Good," Janus said, grabbing Roman's hand and slipping a pen out of his back pocket. "Text us with the details."
He wrote his name with the flourish of a heart and Roman felt his own heart skip another beat.
"Come on, Cassanova," Virgil rolled his eyes, grabbing Janus and pulling him away. "See you later." He waved to Roman and Roman waved back before looking down at his hand.
A date. He had a date with both of them!
A smile spread along his face. Becoming a nude model was the best choice he had made in a while.

Low Sugar, Sweet Moments
AU: Hospitals
CW: Ambulance Rides (I swear everything is okay and it's very low stakes and drama)
WC: 1,574
Date: 12/11/2023
Logan had desperately asked the EMTs not to take him to this hospital, and knew under different circumstances they would have honored his wishes. However, one of the EMTs was Remy. Remy knew him. Remy knew why Logan didn't want to go here. Remy thought it was hilarious that Logan was desperately avoiding being scolded by his husbands.
"My sugar is already going up, I am no longer in need of medical attention. I could have remained at home."
"Nah babes, I know you far too well. If we had left you home, you would have gone back to working without taking the steps to make sure your sugar didn't dip again. You would have been all like 'just a few more pages and then I'll eat, it's not going to take long' and Jay and Vee would have come home to your ass on the floor and then it would have been my ass on the line."
"I am a grown man, I do know how to take care of myself." His head was no longer fuzzy and he didn't feel like he was in a cloudy haze. He wasn't even the one who had called the ambulance, it had been his next door neighbor who had watched Logan stumble back into the house after attempting to get the mail. Logan was thankful that someone had the foresight to get him help, but he was also a bit frustrated that Remy wasn't taking him seriously. Maybe the petulant child part of his brain was also mad at the neighbor for being a narc.
"Grown man my ass, you couldn't last six hours without your boys. They both have short shifts today and yet I'm still carting you to the hospital."
Logan crossed his arms over his chest, rolling his eyes and trying hard not to give Remy any further satisfaction as they made it to the hospital. It wasn't that either of his husbands would be mad at him, but they would both be mildly disappointed and somehow that was far worse.
Virgil didn't normally work the emergency room, he said it was too stressful for him, but there he was, standing at the door to the ambulance bay. He looked panicked at first, eyes running up and down Logan in the way only a trained professional could. However, seeing Logan was okay, his shoulders relaxed. Virgil then turned to Remy who gave him a thumbs up before turning his attention back to Logan.
"What did you do?" He asked, voice low and gravely, and sure, Logan knew that voice meant he was in trouble but was it bad that it was also kind of hot?
"I assure you whatever you have been told is an exaggeration. My blood sugar dropped a bit, not to dangerous levels and I was going to eat I just..." Logan saw Virgil's unamused glare and he faltered. "I got wrapped up in the work I was doing." He had finally broken through the writers block that had been haunting him for over a week and Logan feared stopping for even a moment would lose the momentum he had built.
"What about the alarms on your phone?"
"I... think they went off?" Logan really wasn't sure, he had gotten so wrapped up in what he was doing that he couldn't remember if the alarm to check his blood sugar had gone off. He had finished the chapter he was writing, then he had gotten up and knew he needed to eat. He might have put chicken in the toaster oven but that would have taken so long to cook. He went to check the mail to see if he had gotten the reference book he needed and everything was a bit fuzzy after that. Remy had been the one to tell him about the neighbor calling in.
Virgil frowned but didn't say anything and Logan could feel the disappointment. He hated worrying or disappointing Virgil. He felt like he needed to be perfect for them, to not cause either of them any trouble. "I'm okay, I promise." Logan stood, carefully walking toward Virgil to prove that he was indeed okay. His husband was still unconvinced but didn't say anything. Instead, he wrapped himself around Logan.
"Janus is going to want to look you over as well. Will you sit in the break room until he gets a chance?" Although it was a question, Logan knew Virgil would be uncomfortable if Logan turned the offer down, so he nodded his head, making his way toward the break room with Virgil.
"Do you want to tell me about your day, or do you have to get back to work?"
"Sadly, I have to get back," Virgil groaned, putting his hand on Logan's shoulder and slowly leading him lower until Virgil could steal a quick kiss. "But let me get my iPad. I'm sure you want to keep writing. Have you eaten anything yet?"
Logan shook his head.
"Alright, I'll tell Janus to hurry up and grab something from the caf. Food’s not great but at least it's food."
"Thank you, I'll be right here." Logan tilted Virgil's chin up and stole another kiss. "I won't keep you any longer." He hated that he had worried Virgil, hated that his husband hand that look in his eyes like the world had suddenly become so fragile.
"Just... be safe," He whispered before disappearing back to his job, sending a quick text to Janus about Logan and his need for food. This wasn't the first time Logan had ended up in the hospital like this, feeling better but still on an edge he knew he was too close to. He was getting better about maintaining his insulin levels, but some days.... It would be easier to accept that mistakes happened if it didn't worry his husbands so much. He looked up when Virgil entered the room again with the iPad.
"Jay said he'll be here in five which means more like ten."
Logan snorted and he was happy to see a small smile crossing Virgil's face as well. "I also grabbed you a bag of peanuts. Remy already gave you some glucose so we'll want to stick with some protein for a bit, then we'll check again." The last thing they wanted was for Logan to swing from low to high in such a short time frame. He knew Virgil probably wouldn't calm down for a few more hours. Once Logan had stabilized he'd be able to breathe easier, so Logan nodded, following his nurse's orders. They shared another kiss before Virgil had to leave.
Ten minutes later, Janus came sashaying into the room, plopping down into the chair by Logan. "So, we meet again." Whereas Virgil wore his emotions on his sleeve, Janus was far better at hiding them. His tells were in the way he touched Logan's leg, in the way he sat just a bit closer than necessary in case Logan passed out.
"Janus, we are married, of course we would meet again." Logan rolled his eyes and Janus chuckled, leaning in for a kiss before holding his hand out.
"Did Remy make sure you had your phone before he dropped you off to me?"
Logan began to fish through his pockets, handing his phone to Janus. "Technically, he dropped me off to Virgil." But neither of them really cared about that technicality. "Do you have any surgeries today?"
"Sadly no, the surgery I had today was canceled which means I was asked to do paperwork. Can you believe it? A face this pretty being asked to do paperwork."
"Truly a travesty," Logan responded deadpan, watching as his husband went through his phone, looking at his numbers from his blood sugar tracker.
"Were you really focused on a chapter?" Janus' voice wasn't judgmental, it was soft and curious. Logan felt comfortable nodding. He wasn't sure if he was projecting his disappointment onto Janus but he thought he could feel it. He was desperately trying to ignore that feeling along with the gnawing guilt. Instead, he answered Janus' question.
"Yes, I finally figured out that scene I was telling you about last night and I knew if I stopped I was going to forget it again."
Janus handed back the phone, nodding. "Well, I'm on a lunch break, since as I said all I have is paperwork today. Would you come with me on a date to the completely exclusive cafeteria?" His charming smile that led slightly into a smirk, the devious twinkle in his eyes. It was all so much and it made Logan feel far more comfortable.
He smiled softly, thankful that Janus didn't make a big deal out of this. "Sounds fancy. I'd love to join you." He grabbed Janus' hand, standing up and pulling him into a short hug.
"Thank you," He whispered and Janus leaned up to gently kiss his neck. He was already feeling guilty enough, he appreciated Janus' approach to the situation.
"Of course. We will always be here for you, to love you and protect you." Janus responded. "Virgil might come off intense, but we both know mistakes happen. We're just happy we can be here to support you."
"I know, and I love you."
Janus smirked, "Well, if I must say it." He stood on his tippy toes, kissing the side of Logan's jaw line. "I love you too. We both do."

On the Outside
AU: Merpeople
CW: Blood and Injury, Janus Angst
WC: 3,753
Date: 12/10/2023
The ceremony was beautiful. It was everything Janus had come to expect from Roman, grand, extravagant, and beautiful. Logan, despite his attempts to remain stoic, was ever the blushing sacrifice, his life made into a promise to love and to cherish their king. Janus turned from the sight, and swam away unable to watch for another moment. First it had been Virgil, always Janus' antagonist, always so afraid of failure. Janus had fallen in love with the way he protected others, with the sarcastic wit he used to hide his insecurities. Janus had fallen in love with Virgil, and Virgil had fallen in love with the king.
Apparently, Roman was the adventurous type, always attempting to escape his duties as monarch of their fair city, always running from the coral spires that they called a palace. He and Virgil had met on one of those outings and had bonded. At first, Janus didn't think anything would come of it, the two were constantly arguing, constantly fighting, then the day came when he saw them. They were making out behind the jeweler's shop and when they separated for more than an inch, Virgil's eyes were filled with so much love.
Janus had swallowed his feelings and moved on, refusing to pull himself into a situation where he would get hurt. Janus was smart enough to know he didn't have a chance against a king, and if he had made a move beforehand, it would have only made things strained between them. So he let go. He let go of his best childhood friend. He let go of the first mer he loved. He moved on.
Virgil became the king's first sacrifice, a title denoting the life Virgil would have to sacrifice to be by Roman's side, the people he would sacrifice. It also denoted Roman's sacrifice of safety. When a king announced he loved someone so publicly, it gave his enemies a target, a manipulative tool. There were many mer that would use any opportunity they could to take advantage of the king, and having a beloved, having a sacrifice, meant opening up one more avenue for manipulation and treason. The title of sacrifice was a reminder, and a promise.
Despite that, Virgil didn't leave them behind. He still visited whenever he got the chance. He made excuse after excuse to come see Janus and Logan, often times Roman would come along and Janus would play the part of a gracious host. He couldn't deny the king was good looking, but he was not a fan of the way he strutted about as if he owned the place. He did own the place, in a manner of speaking, but it still pissed Janus off. Though, that wasn't the full truth either, was it. Janus had been jealous, jealous of the way Roman would flirt with Logan, jealous of the way Logan looked at Roman and Virgil. It had been naïve to hope, but Janus had thought, with Virgil gone, he might finally make a move on Logan. It was the two of them, and they had been able to take solace in each other.
That hadn't lasted long. Janus had watched quietly as Roman flustered Logan, spun him around in circles until he could only look forward. Janus had watched as Virgil pulled Logan out of his shell. He even answered Logan's questions when he asked about emotions. Janus had watched it all fall apart, sitting by and not saying a thing as Roman took one more person away from him. The ceremony had been the final straw. Janus hadn't been able to watch as Virgil and Roman kissed and spoiled Logan, not when he wanted to be in Logan's place, not when he wanted to be by Logan's side.
They didn't visit as often anymore, especially when Janus started making excuses, reasons why he couldn't see them, lies to hide his pain. Eventually, they stopped coming altogether, and it was easier that way. He moved from the coral spire he had shared with Logan and Virgil to something much smaller, something further from the palace. He left his job on the tribunal, no longer wanting to present cases in front of the three people he couldn't have. He focused on hunting, relying on old skills he had used as a guppy, as a survivor. He could still do it. He could still take care of himself. He hadn't grown soft in the light of Logan and Virgil's smiles.
They would hate to see him doing this again. This job was so dangerous. The hunter could easily become the hunted if one wasn't careful, and even if one was, a single misstep could throw everything off. Janus had barely made it back from the hunt with no prey to show for his efforts. His tail was missing patches to scales, scraped, broken and bleeding. It hurt to swim but what other choice did he have? He wasn't going to just lay down in the sand and die. That wasn't his style. If he was going to die it would at least be where it was comfortable.
Somehow he made it home, leaving a trail of thick black blood in his wake. He hoped nothing else out there wanted to hunt him, because it would be far too easy to follow his trail, at least until the tide changed.
"Just swell," He muttered to himself and the empty house around him. He had been lonely without the others. He had thought the smaller house would help. It hadn't. The loneliness persisted despite the confined space. "What a warm home I've created." He rolled his eyes, swimming over to his bed of kelp and lowering himself slowly into it. He should probably tend to his wounds, but he also was too tired to move. He would take care of it later. He would take care of it when he woke up.
[Section Break]
Virgil couldn't help but swim laps across his room, trying to figure out exactly where things had gone wrong. He knew Logan was watching him but he didn't really care at this point. In fact, Logan could probably provide some perspective. "He hates us." Virgil said, knowing it wasn't true but also knowing Logan would help him out of his spiral.
"I highly doubt Janus hates us, though I also find him pushing us away a bit strange."
That wasn't what Virgil was expecting. He didn't think Logan would actually agree that something was wrong. He figured he was just being overly anxious but he needed someone to talk him through it. Logan looked back at him and sighed, slowly swimming over to him, setting down his book. "Come here, angelfish," He whispered before pulling Virgil into a hug. "We've given him a bit of space, but how about we go check on him? Just the two of us? That might help considering his walls seem to come up when Roman is around."
"Yeah, cool, I could get behind that... but do you think it's safe? We haven't been out of the castle without guards since before we were with Ro."
"Safe or not, I feel like visiting Janus will help calm your nerves. Also, we won't be long, and we won't be far. Janus lives near the palace so we should still be in a protected area."
It only took him a few seconds to agree. Virgil needed to see Janus again, to make sure he was okay. Something felt off and he was desperate to fix whatever it was. "Maybe we should take one guard, just to be safe?"
Logan nodded, "I think that's a wise decision. Let's go ask someone, assuming you're ready to go."
"Yeah, yeah I'm ready." He had been ready days ago but he couldn't tell Logan that. Now was good.
It was a beautiful day for a swim around town, the temperature was nice and Virgil began to relax almost immediately after they were out of the palace. Maybe he had just been cooped up too long, being a King's sacrifice, especially Roman's they were always so well protected. It was sweet, but it was also increasingly stressful. Virgil liked to have more control of his surroundings and often he felt he didn't have that in the palace. It had been easier back when they went on regular visits, back when Logan and Janus still lived together. It had been so awkward trying to introduce Roman to Janus, he had seemed different, at arms length almost and after the ceremony with Logan it had gotten even worse. Virgil didn't know how to fix it. He didn't know how to just come out and let Janus know that he was in love, and he desperately wanted to let Janus know because things didn't feel complete without him.
"This is odd," Logan whispered looking at the name plates posted in front of the coral.
"What's odd?"
"I don't see our names, or Janus' for that matter."
Virgil felt himself grow faint as the anxiety once again took hold of him, ice water running through his mid sea veins. "That can't be right. Why would Janus move out of the place we had together?" Virgil began to drag Logan toward the property managers office she would know what was going on.
"Luna, bitch, where's Janus? His name isn't listed anymore."
The lion fish looked over at Virgil before giving him a wide smile, her spines flaring out. "Virgil! Big shot finally comes to visit me and only asks about his ex. How rude!"
"He's not my ex," Virgil blushed a bit, reaching out for Logan's hand, holding it tightly.
"Could have fooled me with the way you three were always flirting. It was a bit sad when he was left here alone. Anyway, told me the place was too big for just him so he moved out, probably about three months ago now."
Three months, had it really been three months since they had last visited him? They both knew he wanted space but that was too much space. "Did the fucker tell you where he was moving to?" Virgil tried to smile, tried to keep his anxiety from showing, it was a trick he had learned from Janus, but he wasn't nearly as good at it as Janus had been.
"Yeah, chill, I'll get you an address. And if you're gonna win him over might I suggest some nice sea glass? Showing up empty handed is a major no-no." She pulled out an oil pencil and wrote Janus' new address on Virgil's free hand. "He's near the outskirts of town so you have time to think of something nice before you get there.
"We appreciate the help, Luna," Logan said, far calmer than Virgil had been able to pretend he was.
"The outskirts, there's nothing out there but danger. Fuck, do you think he went back to hunting? I swear if that idiot got himself hurt again I'm going to put him in the dungeon just to keep him safe."
"I'm sure he's fine," Logan whispered, pulling Virgil in closer. "Janus is intelligent. He isn't the kind to take unnecessary risks." They should have known something was up when Janus left his position on the tribunal. He had loved that job and wasn't that one of the first signs that something was wrong, abandoning the things you loved and cared about?
"Lo, I need to you talk me down, okay? I'm spiraling pretty bad. What if he's dead? What if he got eaten? What if we never see him again?"
Logan squeezed his hand and they continued to move forward, neither of them wanting to risk the possibility that Janus needed them and they weren't there. "As I said, Janus is very intelligent. I doubt he would get himself into a situation where he needed our help so dramatically that he couldn't ask for it."
"Right, right," Virgil whispered, still clinging to Logan.
"Also, between the three of us we have a very wide set of skills. In the past we have been able to handle many different challenges because of this. I don't believe there are many things in this ocean that we can't handle together. Also, we have the king's resources at our disposal now." He kept his voice gentle and Virgil was thankful. Logan had always been able to help him calm down, but still, right now, everything felt off.
As they got closer to the small hut Janus was supposedly staying in, the sea around them looked darker and Virgil shivered a bit. "Of course Janus would live somewhere creepy. He was all about that aesthetic and vibe." Virgil was sure he wasn't hiding how worried he was, but he was still trying. He was trying to give himself some kind of sense of normalcy.
"It does seem like his style," Logan responded, but he also squeezed Virgil's hand tightly. The darkness grew as they got closer and they both realized what was happening at the same time. Logan turned to the guard who had been following them. "Go back to the palace, get a physician here immediately, and inform king Roman of where we are and what we are doing." He then let go of Virgil's hand and swam toward the darkened water, entering the house without bothering for permission. He pushed the kelp away until he saw Janus' body, curled tightly around a slowly seeping wound. He took in a quick breath before immediately starting on first aid. Virgil wasn't sure what to do or how to handle this. It was like watching his worst nightmares come into reality.
"Virgil," Logan called, "Open up his nearest heat vent and get us some broth cooking. He's going to need something to eat or he will never regain his strength."
"Right?" He could do with instructions. All he needed to do was focus on the instructions he was being given. He could do this.
Time passed by too slowly and too quickly at the same time. Virgil managed to get the broth together and Logan was able to get Janus conscious enough to drink a bit but he faded again shortly after that. It was all a blur and when Roman showed up with the physician, Virgil almost broke down. This wasn't supposed to happen. This wasn't supposed to be how it worked out.
[Section Break]
Janus woke up far more comfortably than he thought he would. The temperature was a little cool but less than he thought it would be considering where he lived. Even the kelp felt more comfortable than normal. He shifted and cracked his eyes open taking in his surroundings. It took him all of a second to realize he wasn't at home. Slowly twisting his head to get a better view, his eyes landed on a familiar red tail. The king was asleep, and Janus was most likely in a hospital. Shit, he hadn't expected to be found much less by the king. At least he was hoping he had been found by the king. Janus knew how bad it would be if it had been Logan or Virgil who had found him in that state and he was doing everything he could to deny that possibility.
"Ah, you're awake," Roman said, shifting to be a bit closer. Apparently he wasn't sleeping as much as Janus thought he was. "You have worried my beloveds." Roman watched Janus before sighing and sitting back a bit. They were both silent, neither sure what to say to the other. Janus was just about to ask when he could leave, when Roman spoke, his deep voice reverberating in the waves.
"I don't understand you," He said quietly. "You've quit a job you liked, moved to a place where you were alone, I am all for the drama and the adventure but this seems like a bit much. Were you intending on hurting the two of them? Was your grand plan to die alone only for them to hear news of your passing years later."
Janus wanted to answer no, but in a way, he was. He had wanted to push them away, because it hurt to be around them. It was better if they were allowed to focus on themselves and on their new happy life. "I was doing what needed to be done." Janus shrugged, wincing when he moved. Okay, maybe he was more injured than he originally thought he was and he didn't want to die. He just... wanted things he couldn't have.
"And what needed to be done?" Roman asked, "Getting yourself killed?"
"Getting away from you," Janus retorted before his brain could stop his mouth. He hated losing his cool but sometimes it was so hard to resist. "I didn't have any plans to stick around and watch you play house with the two men I'm in love with. That isn't my idea of a good time."
"Whoa whoa whoa, slow down. That is a lot to wrap my head around. First off, you love them, and I knew it. No one get that upset so suddenly unless there are some major feelings involved. It's so romantic, the three of you living under the same ocean only to miss each other, but what I'm not understanding is why you had such a problem with me. Or why you didn't just ask me not to come by so you could confess without me being in the way?"
Janus rubbed his face gently fighting the urge to groan. "Well I certainly wasn't going to tell the king what to do, but on top of that, they made their position fairly clear. They were yours." He turned to look at Roman and he watched a look of surprise cross the king's face, eyes wide and gills flared. "I have no intention of getting in the way of their future and their happiness."
"You..." Roman started, voice choked as he gained his composure, brushing the sides of his cheek which had gained a bit of color. "You're an idiot."
Janus stopped, surprise crossing his own face. He focused on the king, attempting to understand what Roman had intended with that response. He was at a loss. Thankfully the king had more to say, apparently.
"They love you, have you not noticed that? And I don't mean in the sense of friendship. Virgil's tail does the same thing when he talks with me, or with Logan as it does with you, the little curl of nervous excitement, and Logan is constantly adjusting his glasses attempting to be perfect in your eyes because if he's perfect, maybe you'll notice him."
Janus sputtered, "N-no. That's not, Virgil does that when he's comfortable with people and he is obviously comfortable with me we've been friends for more then two decades, and Logan, he does that when he's excited. It has nothing to do with how they feel about me. Obviously they are both comfortable around me, we're friends."
"Yep, you're an idiot." Roman began to rise. "The question is do you love them?" He watched Janus with an intensity that he didn't like, that he didn't know how to deal with. Janus had already admitted to loving them. What more did the king want? "I think that's the answer I was looking for." Roman stretched, giving Janus a smile that he didn't understand. "I doubt even if I were to prove it you would understand, but this will at least be entertaining for me."
He started to swim off, leaving Janus alone in the room as he felt the exhaustion creeping up on him. He wasn't sure if it was from his healing injuries, the lack of food, or his conversation with the king. Either way, he wanted to rest. He could go back home after that, rethink his plan about how he wanted to proceed. Whatever he was doing wasn't working.
"Jay!" Virgil's voice echoed in the otherwise empty room interrupting Janus' plan for sleep. Immediately afterward, he felt the pressure of someone laying on top of him, obviously avoiding his injures with the careful precision that only Virgil was capable of.
"It's alright, Shadow. I can't be killed that easily. You know this," Janus whispered, gently running a hand through Virgil's hair, floating in the current they had created. Logan was by their side shortly after, looking down at the two of them.
"You had us worried." His voice was flat, but the way his hands were folded behind his back, no doubt hiding the way they shook, was exceedingly telling. There was a part of Janus that wanted to push them all away, to put up the walls he had meticulously built when they both became Roman's, but he was tired. Instead, he reached out an arm, inviting Logan in and the other man curled up by his side, wrapping his tail protectively over both Janus and Virgil. "I'm not letting you go again," Logan whispered it like a fact, like a truth that not even the gods could change.
"Sleep first, then we can discuss." Janus was trying to leave room for things to change. He didn't want to continue being an outsider looking in. It hurt too much to be near them and to not be theirs.
"No, no discussion." Logan's voice continued to hold that completely assured quality. "I have held my tongue long enough. I love you, and I believe you love me too." A slight waver, barely perceptible but still there. "And I'm not going to let you go. I won't lose you."
What could Janus say to that? When Logan made up his mind there wasn't much argument that could be had. It was strange, and he hadn't fully wrapped his head around the words Logan had said. When he woke up again, more rested and more lucid, he might have something interesting to say about Logan's confession. However, for now, he just closed his eyes.
"Alright, you won't lose me, but we still have things we need to discuss." He wrapped his arm around Logan's back, hand splayed against the other man's flesh. He was too tired for this discussion now, but they would have it soon.
"A worthy compromise," Logan whispered. "Good night Janus."
"Good Night," Virgil echoed and Janus didn't blush, of course he didn't, but his lips did curl into a soft smile as he listed to the two of them breathing.
"Good night."

Ballet and Parkour
AU: Dance
CW: Remus being sexual but nothing over the top
WC: 1,307
Date: 12/9/2023 (Still playing catch up!)
"Don't get me wrong double dee," Remus whined, wrapping his arm around his boyfriend's shoulder. "You look hot in that leotard, but did you really have to wear it during today's practice? You were all over Lewis and I wanted to pull his spine out through his throat." The taller man made a grumpy groan, flailing his other hand about as they walked slowly down the street.
"And what if I said I was interested in Lewis? Would you try to stop me?" Remus stopped walking, allowing Janus to take a few steps in front of him before turning around. As always he had that cocky ass smirk on his face and it relaxed Remus a bit.
"You're not an idiot. If you were suddenly interested in that prick, I'd get your head checked for damage. You're the one who saw through his bullshit the first time. You called out what he was doing was wrong and inappropriate. If you suddenly fell for him, I'd eat my pointe shoes."
Janus snorted, "You'd eat your pointe shoes on a dare, that isn't very convincing. I swear, didn't you attempt to confuse one of the younger dancers, lying to them about how the only proper way to break in your shoes was to boil them with salt? She almost believed you too, poor girl."
"First off, she should know not to trust a man," Remus giggled, "But second, I wouldn't have actually let her do it. Those fuckers are expensive and I might have money to burn but I know not everyone does."
"So you've told me." Janus took a step back, obviously trying to lead Remus forward. "Why do you insist on taking roles that would normally require pointe shoes anyway. I've gotten away with never wearing them in our troupe."
"Easy, fucking over the gender binary," Remus stated, but realized pretty quickly that Janus wasn't listening. His eyes had that far off look he got when something had caught his attention. Remus stepped forward to look down the alley they were passing by. His jaw dropped. Some dude was practicing parkour in rigorous repetition. He jumped from trashcan to fire escape in a singular fluid movement, but the part that had most likely caught Janus' attention was the fluidity of his mid air spin. He threw his body with the force of a professional, spinning just enough to catch the fire escape ladder before letting it go. He reset, and jumped again. Janus had always been a sucker for technique. Remus, however, was always dazzled by strength, and those muscles were sculpted.
"Excuse me," Came a deep voice that snapped both of them out of their thoughts. "It is my understanding that it's considered rude to stare at people, and also that people normally are stared at due to committing some sort of social faux pa. Would you please enlighten me if I have stepped out of social bounds, or if you have?" It almost sounded accusatory but with room for explanation.
Remus felt his whole body blush and he immediately wanted to kiss the SAT words out of that man's mouth. Fuck, this was how Janus had won him over. What was with hot strong men?!
"Apologies, it's the two of us who shouldn't have stared, but we aren't staring due to a social faux pa. We're staring because of your talent."
"And your hot ass!" Remus chimed in, immediately getting a glare from Janus. He knew he was in trouble now but he just hadn't been able to help it. The man was hot, what was wrong with saying that? He wasn't going to go into further detail, normally it was best to let Janus do the talking. He gave his boyfriend a sheepish, barely apologetic grin, and then he heard the laughing.
Their new parkour friend was holding his hand over his mouth as if to try to stifle his joy. "A-apologies, I didn't mean to laugh, however, I've never met someone quite so blunt. It's strange to be hit on by strangers but I do appreciate the honesty." He walked over to the two of them, holding out his hand. "My name is Logan and my skill comes from consistent practice. Are you two also traceurs? I would much appreciate someone I can discuss technique with?"
Janus took his hand first, shaking firmly. He wasn’t sure what word Logan had just used by he knew Parkour when he saw it and decided just to play off that. Hopefully the other man wouldn’t notice and he could look up the word later. "Parkour's not our preferred form of exercise, however we can appreciate talent when we see it, and some of your skills would translate well with what we do." Not perfectly, there was always a learning curve when it came to switching sports or anything of that nature but Remus would be willing to learn.
"If not parkour then where do your interests lie?" He tilted his head in such a cute way. Remus had to grab Janus' hand to make sure he didn't go after Logan right in that moment. He knew he could be a lot sometimes, but he liked being true to himself, and sometimes that meant throwing caution to the wind. This probably wasn't one of those times.
"Ballet," Janus answered, "And it is rare to see someone pull off a mid air twist with that much consistency and fluidity. Especially someone who isn't a dancer." He returned Logan's smile and Remus started to pull a bit at Janus' hand. It was a stim, of sorts, anything to prevent him from running his mouth and ruining a potential friendship with this man. "Apologies, it seems my boyfriend needs my attention."
"Oh, boyfriend?" Logan asked, and the air around him shifted. No, no, no, no, no. That wouldn't do. Remus didn't hold himself back.
"Non exclusive. The two of us are those kinky polyamorous types." He cackled but if the squeeze from Janus was any indication it wasn't super convincing.
"Not how I would phrase it," Janus said with a sigh, "But yes, we are polyamorous. However, I think it's far more important that we're interested in seeing how else you can apply that talent. Would you be interested in joining us for a practice session? We would be amiable to hearing about your technique if you would be amiable to a few questions." Cool as always, he was able to ask Logan out on a date without even batting an eye.
"Very well," Logan replied, just as cool, just as calm. "However, I would appreciate if you would leave me for the time being, after we exchange numbers. You are, after all, blocking the exit to this alley."
"True," Janus said, pulling out a pen, reaching out for Logan's hand again. "But you've already proven to us that us standing here wouldn't be a hindrance to your escape. That is what intrigued us after all."
Logan nodded in response, allowing Janus to write down his number. "That is also true, however, perception is very important, is it not?"
"It is," Janus agreed, "So make sure to wear something comfortable for our practice session. The two of us would both like to see your skill for ourselves."
With everything agreed upon, Janus and Remus left, making their way a full block before either broke down.
"Jannie, he was so hot! Gods I hope he is interested because I am interested." They were still holding hands and Remus was swinging about, desperate to get rid of the energy he had bottled up.
"Me too, Re, me too, but we'll just have to wait and see." Remus nodded, but Janus had that look on his face like he knew something Remus didn't. Gods he hoped Janus had a plan up his sleeve.

The Boss' Boss
AU: Office
CW: None that I can think of
WC: 660
Date: 12/8/2023
"Mr. Meus, can I see you in my office?" Logan looked up from the work he had had his head buried in to see Mr. Sanders standing at the door of his office. Remus was an intimidating figure, six foot seven, wide enough to fill the door frame, yet Logan wasn't concerned. He knew if he really didn't have time for this Remus would let it slide. He wouldn't let it go, but he would let it slide.
"Of course."
He stood from his desk, locking his computer and making his way down the hall with Remus. The two of them walked in silence, listening to the sounds of others working. There were a few people chatting happily about their weekend plans, a few people deep in conversation with someone from another department, and Logan smiled. He was proud of how this company was running.
Once inside Mr. Sander's office, the door was closed behind him and Logan looked up, eyebrow cocked in question.
"You're working too hard." Remus stepped closer to him, pulling Logan into a hug and resting his chin on Logan's shoulder. "Mr. Sanders, it's not fair for you to leave your husband alone for so many nights, wanting and wondering if you might return.”
"Remus," Logan hissed, turning to look at the door, making sure it was locked shut. "I understand your concern, but this isn't a discussion we should be having in the office. This is something we should discuss at home."
Remus pouted, pulling at Logan's tie so he could actually see his husband relax a little bit. "You haven't been home. I don't go to bed early and yet you are still gone by the time I get to bed. I know you wanted to run your business 'behind the scenes'. I know you wanted to make sure no one knew you were the one pulling the strings, but Lo, if you don't take a break, I will make out with you in front of everyone during the Christmas party."
A blush tore up Logan's face, and though he knew Remus was half bluffing, he also knew that Remus was trying to make a point. "Alright, how about a compromise of sorts. I'll work from home the next two days? That way I'll be home when you get back and we can spend the evening together."
"You think I'm an idiot don't you?" Remus laughed, biting down on Logan's shoulder in a spot he could easily cover with his shirt. "The next two days are Saturday and Sunday. You are taking both days off then you can work from home Monday and Tuesday but as soon as I'm home you'll stop working and we will spend some time together, okay?"
Logan chuckled, running his hand through Remus' hair. "Fine, fine," He muttered.
"Oh, and you're taking off early today. I already have your favorite masseuse booked and I made crock pot potato soup this morning for when you get home. Rest, get in your pajamas and relax. Kay?" Remus was squeezing him tighter. He must have seen something in Logan's behavior that Logan hadn't even noticed. Remus was shaking and Logan knew he had actually lost this battle.
"Alright, my star, I love you and I'll take the time off, but please tell me if you need me. There are a few projects in the works but you have my email so you should be able to check in on them if need be." Logan gently pulled away, looking Remus up and down. "Don't work yourself too hard either. I know you have a tendency to get focused and forget about the rest of the world."
Remus cackled, "Don't worry, I have plans for you tonight, a massage of my own if you will. I wouldn't miss that for the world."
Logan rolled his eyes but smiled softly. "Do try to behave, you are still at work."
Remus once again laughed. "No promises."

Lucky
AU: Soulmate Human AU
CW: Remus Angst
WC: 3703
Date: 12/7/2023
There were few people in the world who were as lucky as Remus. He had been born with four soulmates, four people he could pour all of his love and admiration onto and have it be reciprocated. Even if he was a little weird, even if he was a bit reckless, there were going to be four people who loved him through it all.
There were few people in the world who were as lucky as Remus. When he was in middle school he had made two new friends only to find out pretty quickly that they were his soulmates. He had found two of his forever people before he even turned 13 and he knew he was going to have a life full of happiness and love with the two of them. When they found their other two soulmates, Remus was going to be the happiest person in the world.
Remus had a run of bad luck. It could happen to anyone. A few teachers who didn't like him, a few gossipy students who wanted to ruin him, and two parents who didn't believe him. It was a recipe for disaster. Remus was sent away, but he had already met two of his soulmates and his brother, so it was okay.
Remus' bad luck continued. His brother was isolated from him, apparently a bad influence isn't worth talking to. His soulmates were isolated from him. Janus' parents were convinced Remus was the devil and Virgil's own family was chaos. Between the drama in their lives and the restrictions in Remus' their communication faltered and failed more and more until it was basically non-existent.
There were few people in the world who were as unlucky as Remus. He had finally gotten out of his crappy high school his parents had shipped him to. He had his freedom, but he had no one. Virgil's phone was disconnected, Janus' father picked up when Remus tried to call, and Roman wanted nothing to do with him. Remus was alone but he didn't need luck. He could be strong. He could fight. Not to mention, he had hope. Remus still had two soulmates who might want to see him.
There were few people in the world who were as unlucky as Remus. He stared down at his phone, looking at his brother's instagram. He was home for the summer break, his first semester of college over with, and he had brought home two friends. At first Remus couldn't believe his eyes, two men, two soulmarks, both matching his missing pieces. His brother had to have known. He had to have understood what it meant becoming friends with those two people, those two specifically. Remus threw his phone at the wall of his apartment. It was drafty and poorly maintained but it was his. He had learned how to do most of the repairs himself. He had gotten into a job himself, and damn it was exhausting, but he had done it all for the hope that one day his luck would turn around, one day he could be loved again. Sinking to the floor, Remus put his head in his knees, closing his eyes and fighting the tears that threatened to well up from inside of him. It had all been a rumor, a stupid rumor his parents and teachers took as truth. Yes he liked the macabre, but that didn't make him a monster, and even if he was, what of it. He wasn't hurting anyone. Remus ran a hand through his hair, looking at the dent in his wall. He was going to have to fix that. He could get all the supplies and then maybe get himself something cheap to eat from a fast food place. It was so hard to cook cheaply for one person especially when he didn't have proper storage space for leftover or bulk cooking.
Pushing himself to his feet, Remus walked over and picked up his phone, quickly closing the Instagram app so he wasn't able to focus on what he lost. He had wanted to go back home after high school, to return to his hometown and find Janus and Virgil. However, being completely cut off from financial help, it wasn't necessarily easy for him to make it back home. He might be able to now that it was a year later, but his finances still weren't completely secure. Maybe he should start posting on Instagram rather than just stalking his brother, then Janus and Virgil could find him easier, but honestly, Remus was nervous. So much had gone wrong in his life, he was afraid of trying to reach out again, of watching it all blow up in his face. He had an account, but it was blank, and he wasn't following anyone, not even Roman. Remus hadn't wanted to give his brother the chance to block him. He couldn't handle being anymore disconnected then he already was.
Slipping his phone into his pocket, Remus ruffled his long hair. He had started dying it green ever since he got out of that stupid boarding school. Maybe he should post that, he could dye his hair again, it was getting a bit faded and he could buy box dye and a steak quesadilla and just do something for himself today. Pulling his phone out of his pocket, Remus went to check his bank account. He had enough money for it, especially if he wasn't going to try and go back to his hometown. He needed to find another word for it. That place hadn't been home in a really long time.
True to his word, Remus spent the rest of his night dying his hair a bright green, he even trimmed it up and made it look nice before taking a picture and posting it. He wasn't trying to get famous or anything, just trying to throw out a line. He wasn't the type to sit by helplessly. If Janus and Virgil didn't find him, then it wasn't actually meant to be. If they did and didn't want him... well he could continue deluding himself.
After seeing his last two soulmates with Roman, he wasn't expecting to ever have them by his side. He was sure his brother had already told them a million awful things about the type of person he was. He was going to cling to what he knew, who he knew. Virgil and Janus had been such wonderful soulmates. They had just been kids when they met, and that's all they wanted to be back then. The three of them would sneak onto the school at night, they would play harmless pranks on each other and when things were really hard for Virgil at home, they would all come together and just exist. That's what Remus wanted, he wanted someone he could exist with, someone he could go home to. He wasn't sure what that was going to mean for any of them in a future, if they even had one together, but he imagined Halloweens spent in graveyards, Christmases spent in the forest. He imagined so much while he was separated from them. Now he just hoped to have them in his house one day.
[Section Break]
Virgil sat on Janus' couch, curled up against him as he scrolled through tumblr. Janus had just gotten back for summer break and Virgil wasn't intending on leaving his side if it could be helped. He had gotten super clingy after they lost Remus, and it really was their fault. The two of them should have tried harder to keep in contact with him, but he hadn't had a cell phone when he was sent to that stupid boarding school and Virgil's home life had gotten so much worse. Remus had been so isolated, but so had Virgil up until the day he turned eighteen and ran away. Janus was the one who had helped him out, hiding most of it from his parents. The two of them were all each other had and even now they could only cuddle like this because both of his parents were out on a cruise. Their only son came back from college and they were gone. Virgil didn't know how they could stand to be separated from him.
"You're squishing me again, I can't breathe," Janus chuckled, shifting so he could pull Virgil a bit closer. "How is it you are a guest in this house and yet taking up my entire couch?"
"It's not my fault your couch is so small," Virgil stretched as if to make a point and Janus rolled his eyes before leaning down to kiss him.
"It's not my fault you're so tall."
"You're just short, even Remus-" Virgil cut himself off, they weren't supposed to talk about Remus, it hurt too much, but sometimes he couldn't help it.
"You're thinking about him again, aren't you?" Janus put down his phone, running a hand over Virgil's eyes to hide him from the world. They had had to stop thinking about Remus, stop dwelling on him. It was tearing both of them apart. Virgil blamed himself for not reaching out more and Janus worried about whether or not Remus was doing alright. Everything had gone from perfect to falling apart in such a short time, and they had just been kids.
"I can't help it. I keep thinking if I had written him letters, or if I had done literally anything at all, maybe I could have kept in touch with him, maybe he and I could be working to support you through what you want to do and not what your parents want you to do."
"A third income would help," Janus teased, rubbing his thumb across Virgil's temple, watching as his boyfriend wrapped his fingers around Janus' hand, holding him closer. "But it's not your fault. It's not either of our faults. If anything, we can blame Roman."
Virgil snorted but didn't argue. The two of them both had a bone to pick with Roman who had truly gone to the dark side in high school. He had perpetuated the rumors about his brother and started using Remus as his tragic backstory. Senior year Virgil had decked Roman for his lies. He had gotten suspended for three days but it had been worth it.
"Do you want to jump onto instagram and make fun of him?" Janus asked and Virgil pouted. It wasn't fair for him to be so well known. He was supposed to be mysterious.
"Yeah," He finally relented, slowly pulling down Janus ‘hand so he could see once again. "After, do you want to go to the mall and see if we can scope out soulmates? More people means more eyes looking for Remus."
"I guess if we have to leave the comfort of my home the mall is acceptable." Virgil poked Janus in the side and they both laughed a bit, settling back into their silence. It was hard to keep themselves smiling and happy, but they did their best. They fought to keep and hold each other, not willing to lose one another again. Janus opened up Roman's instagram and immediately shot up almost pushing Virgil off the couch.
"What? What happened?"
"Look at this!" He held his phone out. Virgil and Janus were both looking at Roman with two men they had never seen before, two men who had their soulmarks.
"We should break into the house," Janus said quietly but seriously and Virgil shot up. It was so like Remus and for a moment it almost felt like he was here, but then the moment faded and Virgil was very aware that this was an awful idea.
"We should not, we can't break into Remus' childhood home. Especially not with Roman there. The two probably aren't even with him, they're probably in a hotel or something."
Janus lifted his eyebrow, standing up as well. "Come on Virgil, think about it. They have so many bedrooms, and the Prince parents are so concerned about status. They would never have their guests stay in a hotel. They are probably in the media room watching some stupid movie. Also, this is something Remus would do, and if they can't see past it, then they won't accept Remus, and I won't accept them."
Virgil wrung his hands together. "This… this is a really bad idea, but I'll follow you anywhere."
A look of love and adoration crossed Janus' face as he pulled Virgil in for a kiss. He wasn't the type for sudden affection, he preferred to be more mysterious than that, but sometimes, he had too much love to keep held in his chest. When they finally separated he smirked softly. "Let's go break into a house."
It wasn't really breaking into a house if they had a key, right? Technically they didn't break anything. Virgil still looked terrified about the whole thing, but he was doing his best to keep on a neutral face. Janus was proud, but also knew he would have to do almost all of the talking with this. He made his way to the media room, which was actually empty but then he heard laughing from the living room and Janus tilted his head that direction. Part of him felt the need to be dramatic, to flicker the lights and scare all of them, the other part of him did want to impress his soulmates. He would just have to wait for the right moment.
"Alright, Roman, what's your greatest fear?" The curly haired one asked and that was Janus' moment.
"Oh I can answer that," He walked in, leaning against the door frame with a smirk. "He's afraid he'll turn out to be like his brother, or at least, what he imagines his brother is."
The room was silent for a moment before the taller one went for his phone. It looked like he was dialing someone when Roman sighed and rolled his eyes.
"What are you doing here, Janus?" His tone was flat and Janus would have been offended if he wasn't more focused on the importance of what was in front of him.
"Coming to meet my soulmates, since you decided to hide the two of them from us."
"I wasn't hiding anything from them or you," Roman stated and at the same time Logan and Patton spoke.
"Us?"
Virgil slowly walked around the corner. "Sorry to disturb you, I thought it was a bad idea, but also, we didn't want to miss an opportunity to meet you." He looked over at the two men. "I'm Virgil, and this is Janus."
"How cruel of you to not let me introduce myself, but I guess Princy already broke that for me. Yes, my name is Janus and if you'd like me to unrobe, I can prove that the two of us are your soulmates. However, that might offend poor Roman's delicate sensibilities."
"Now see here," Roman shot up, making his way toward Janus but was stopped by Logan.
"Allow me to make sure I have all of the information correct. You know these two men?"
Roman nodded.
"And you were aware that we shared soulmarks."
Roman nodded again. "But, I just realized it today, when we were all in the pool."
Logan hummed and sighed, looking up at Roman. "What else are you hiding?"
Janus smirked at that. "Oh you haven't told them have you?"
"Quiet," Logan said standing up, "We could very well have you arrested for trespassing. Simply because I am irritated at Roman doesn't mean you are off the hook." He swiveled back to Roman. "What else haven't you told us?"
Patton stood up slowly, putting a hand on Logan's arm. "Hey, love, deep breath. I'm sure Roman has a reason, and isn't it just a bit romantic that they came running to find us as soon as they knew where we were?" He asked with a softness that melted some of Logan's ire. He took in a slow deep breath and turned back to Roman expectantly.
"Do you remember the brother I've told you about?"
"The brother who bullied someone until they left school?"
"You fucking liar!" Virgil hissed, stepping forward. "Is that what you told them about him? You know that was a stupid rumor. Jenna moved because her parents were relocated. The two of them barely interacted." It was Janus' turn to reach out and reign his love in. Patton looked a bit surprised. Logan looked suspicious.
"What about your brother?" Logan asked.
"He's your fourth soulmate." The room was deathly silent for a bit, none of them dared to breathe. "I didn't know, I swear I didn't know until today, and I didn't know how to tell you. Remus really was awful, he was always trying to be in the spotlight, always attempting to do weird things just to get other people's attention. He didn't understand how to behave and he stepped all over people's boundaries. He wasn't a good person, and I wasn't sure how to tell you that the universe decided you should be with someone like that. I was going to tell you eventually, but I just... I didn't know how."
Patton pulled Roman in for a hug. "We know the soulmate subject is tricky for you, but this is a decision you should have let us make."
Logan rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I agree, especially since you have no idea where your brother is." Logan turned to Janus and Virgil, "My name is Logan, would you two happen to know where Remus is?"
They both immediately turned somber and Logan sighed. "Very well, now that we know what we're dealing with. I think it's probably best if you two head home as you weren't invited and you are currently trespassing. Roman, we are going to have a very frank discussion about your brother." He pulled out his phone, opening it up and handing it to Janus. "Please put your phone number in, I shall call you in the morning and we can discuss things further." Janus raised his eyebrow and said nothing as he put his name and number in the phone, adding a heart emoji just for flair.
[Section Break]
After they had left, Logan sighed and rubbed his face. "Roman, I have always been aware that your disdain for your brother might be more than you were willing to admit, however, hiding our soulmate from us is reprehensible at best and an intentional betrayal of our friendship at worst."
Roman's face soured but Logan continued. He didn't want this to turn into an argument, he just wanted to understand. "Tell us about Remus, not your opinions, but what he has actually done."
They had a conversation, a long one, a hard one. It went several hours into the night and at the end of it Patton and Roman, who weren't used to all nighter study sessions, were both exhausted. Logan, on the other hand, wanted to reach out to Janus first. He had gotten as much information as he could from Roman, including Remus' disownment and the location of Remus' boarding school he had been sent to. Logan had a job now. He didn't think Remus would be far from where the boarding school was, especially if he hadn't had the money to leave. Which meant he could construct a radius, and maybe they could go on a field trip. He wanted a chance to meet his soulmate. He wanted to be able to decide for himself whether or not Remus was too much. Logan didn't like being told what he could and couldn't do, what he could and couldn't have. He made the decisions for himself, and he would judge Remus for himself.
He and Patton spent the rest of the night coming up with a plan, Roman consistently sulking in the corner. In the morning the two of them spoke to Remus and Janus again. It was decided, they were going to go on a road trip, not only to try and find Remus, but also in order to get to know one another better. That's what led Patton here, standing with Janus in a coffee shop almost a full state away. The drive had been hard, but fun and they had decided to split up into unfamiliar pairs. Patton was getting to know Janus and the ways he had with words. He was currently sweet talking a barista, acting calm and collected, yet Patton had also seen him go on rants about injustice as he and Logan debated. There were so many sides to Janus and Patton was utterly fascinated.
"Can you tell us anymore about this patron, like what areas he frequents?" The barista shook her head, but then her eyes lit up.
"I don't know where he is, but I think that's him." She was pointing to a figure walking past the coffee shop, shuffling about in a daze. He looked so tired and in need of such care. Patton was moving on his own, quickly making his way to the man with bright green hair, a thunderbolt tattoo on his arm that matched the one of Patton's. As soon as he got to Remus' side, the man faltered and fell into Patton's arms. He must have been exhausted.
"Angel?" He asked quietly, and Patton couldn't help the smile that lit up his face. He was already starting to like Janus, so of course he was willing to jump into this feet first.
"I'm sorry kiddo, I'm not an Angel, but I think I could fall for you like Lucifer."
Remus snorted, slowly pushing himself up. "Cute," he muttered, yawning. "Thanks for catching me-"
It seemed like he had more to say, but didn't get a chance as Janus flung himself at Remus. "You're here."
"Jay?" He asked, trepidation and nervousness in his voice before he scooped up Janus, both of them inevitably falling on their asses. It didn't matter, not as Remus continued to call out Janus' nickname, and not as Patton sent a picture to Virgil and Logan.
Patton could tell, they were going to be the luckiest group ever.
