1939 Packard Twelve V-12 Roadster
1939 was the first year for the column shifter on the V-12 Packard.
In the late 1920s, Detroit found itself immersed in a phenomenon later termed the ‘Cylinder Wars,’ a concept that may seem peculiar to us looking back 90 years. During this period, prominent manufacturers vied for supremacy in the multi-cylinder luxury car market, striving to be crowned the ‘king of the hill.’ Despite the looming grip of the Great Depression on the global economy in the early to mid-1930s, Cadillac, Auburn, Franklin, Lincoln, and Pierce-Arrow all unveiled their 12-cylinder models.

1932 E-1 Cord Experimental Limousine
After only having been driven 779 miles, the stock market crash ended the plans for putting the big limo into production and it was dismantled. Paul Bryant saw the body in a barn near Plato Center, Ill. It had no engine, no fenders, and no grille shell. Paul searched for and found the missing parts and painstakingly reassembled this magnificent auto.

A very grand Model J Duesenberg with what appears to be a dual cowl phaeton body with swept side livery and carrying a pair of Pilot Rays on the ’Bow Tie’ bumper. No body identification. It always surprises me when people don’t credit the coachbuilder. We know all about the chassis’ of these vintage cars but the bodywork is always so interesting and I certainly like to know who built it. For those of you who don’t know Most of these luxury cars were sold as chassis only and take it to your favourite coacbuilder and specify your requirements. The body often cost more than the chassis’s. Sometimes the bodies were replaced due to rot , damage or change of circumstances. Packard used to offer a body changeover for summer/winter bodies. Your convertible Coupé in the summer could because a closed sedan or limousine for the winter! Simply unbolt one body and substitute it!

#OTD 1941, U.S. Navy pilot ENS “Tuck” Smith spotted the Bismarck and then transmitted the German battleship's coordinates. The U.S. was officially neutral at the time but Smith was secretly training RAF pilots to fly PBY Catalina seaplanes. The next day would be Bismarck's last.

That is the famous Dick Hill inspecting the converted Martin MARS for fire fighting. He earned the FAA’s Wright Brothers Award for a career without a single mishap. He and his wife were great people. Both died from cancer. I miss them dearly.

The Lakeside Inn and Casino of Stateline, Nevada dates back to 1946. Unfortunately, it closed during Covid-19 in 2020 and would not reopen. It was demolished in 2022 to make room for a healthcare facility. Source

1941 Chrysler Newport Dual Cowl Phaeton
Hollywood Actress Lana Turner's 1941 Chrysler Newport Dual Cowl Phaeton.
Chrysler liked this show car so much it built six of them. By the early 1940s the public was more favorably disposed to streamlining than they were when the 1934 Airflows were introduced, so Chrysler revisited the theme with the 1941 Newport. The four-door dual-cowl phaetons had aluminum body panels, aircraft-style instruments, and dual folding windshields. They were built by the LeBaron coachworks on off-the-shelf frames and running gear. Custom touches included hideaway headlamps and door handles. Actress Lana Turner once was the proud owner of one appropriately hued in red.
Another paced the 1941 Indianapolis 500.
