"it's just a question and all you have to do is answer" loses its exonerating force when you understand that one of the many tools used by institutions of power is epistemic extortion. it's just a question, but who is time and time again asked the same question and who is spared the trouble? who has explanations and disavowals demanded of them on the daily and whose innocence is assumed from the start? all we have to do is answer and you'll let it go? no, we've learnt better: it isn't about our answers but your license to ask the questions ceaselessly, directing scrutiny our way in a collective project to seek out our sins. it doesn't actually matter what we say—you'll be back here tomorrow demanding more words, more reasoning and defense. and because what you demand is perfection, which does not exist anywhere on this world, you will find a trivial fault if you press for long enough. so why answer at all? such a silly, silly, unrelentingly violent game.
