What happened with Verizon? All their ads used to be about having the best network. Now it seems like all their ads are about content bundles and device subsidies. Did they lose the network advantage? Do consumers not care?

The whole concept of SMS "toll fraud" seems ridiculous to me. And I say this as someone who works for a companies that pays a lot in SMS fees.
You're advertising to users you have explicitly bucketed as not yet trustworthy that you'll send an SMS message at a cost borne by you (and it's at a cost even for "regular" consumer cellphone numbers). And then you get upset when the cost is higher than some secret threshold you expected or the volume of messages to an endpoint or collection of endpoints is higher than a secret threshold.
Absurd!
I'm sympathetic to the concept that there should be a cap to send a message, and that payment on the phone system should be upfront rather than reconciled after the fact. But fix the system rather than vilify players who figured out how to minmax the absurdities of it (and boy is it absurd).
Or find another way to insert scarcity and friction into account creation.

I was never an Effective Altruist proper, but I did drop $5 in a Anti-Malaria jar at an event in Berkeley once. Are there any Pro-Malaria charities I can donate to to offset?

Not enough has been written about the psychic damage done to elder millennials growing up thinking Gen Xers were cool, when infact Gen Xers were (and are) by-and-large losers.

There's a huge segment of the games industry and games media who think of games not as a means to make money, or making and sharing a great experience, but basically as a jobs program for artists. Increased labor productivity is anathema to them. See also the freak outs about AI.

There's a certain portion of the online right that views the "obvious falseness" of some of the left's sacred truths as something akin to a loyalty test or occasionally a demonstration of submission.
Well the literal corporeal resurrection of Jesus Christ has got to be one of the most obviously absurd and false "sacred truths" of all time.

Kind of wild that Gary Tan thinks fixing SF politics is easier than making San Jose respectable again.
Fifteen years ago San Jose was still "The Capital of Silicon Valley".
When YC first moved to the Bay Area they HQed on the peninsula and made SF founders come down.

The vibe I get on the bird site is half the memes are laughing with him and not at him.
I agree that he didn't do a good job ripping apart US political coalitions or undermining the western system.
Mr. Vlad did tell a few anecdotes about his overtures to American president seemingly being well received at first but slapped down by entrenched interests. Of course the deep state overriding democracy like this is a hobby horse of Tuckers. Tucker pushed a hypocrisy of the American System angle and was left hanging.
There's a bunch of potential other audiences for this than contemporary Americans.
Poles: probably not, he painted historical Poland in a negative light as everything from historic oppressors of Russians, to salami slicers who created the idea of Ukraine in the first place, to blaming them for Hitler's partition of Yugoslavia.
Germans and Hungarians: Maybe they are somewhat more interested in the long historical narrative. It certainly would be in his interest to drive a wedge between these folks and Washington, but I didn't really see it. The only mentions of Germany outside of the world wars were really raised by Tucker about the Nordstream.
My best guess is this was a vanity project to serve as a source for future historians. 🤷
Haven't watched the Putin interview, but the online right are mocking him.
Tumblr media
TheMotte says he came off as an aloof imperialist Russian boomer, not a genius critic of the Western ideological system who could cut apart Western political coalitions. This is likely to lead to a shift within the contemporary right-wing ideological vanguard - the world is smaller than they thought, fewer people are doing ideological development work than they expected, and talent is rarer.
So, a new era. Though where they go from here, I don't know.
Did Putin get any advantage from giving Tucker Carlson a 30-minute lecture on Russian history? Well, it apparently dropped the same day as a report that noted:
Biden reportedly "did not remember" when he was vice president, forgetting on the first day of the interview when his term ended. "If it was 2013 — when did I stop being vice president?" he asked.

"Anti-pattern" is such a dumb term. The opposite of a pattern isn't a pattern but bad. "Anti-Pattern" should clearly mean something anti-inductive or with low autocorrelation. A pattern but bad should be a "Malpattern" or similar.
