secret sunshine / milyang
2007
lee chang dong
goddd this hit me so hard in the christianity questioning god feels. the finding god in a time of despair and then (what feels like) immediately losing him. when shes crying in the church,, when everyone at mass is so moved by songs... argh.
the theatre was kinda laughing at the parts when she tried to ask the men for sex, but honestly i was so sad because it just felt like another form of self-harm for her,, and GOD like . seeking out a form of physical comfort and then quickly realising what is Actually happening and everything hitting like a freight train. holy shit.
shin-ae's performance was so believable and moving, and the film really made me feel like one of her friends looking on, not knowing how to respond to her reactions. also her crying everywhere else BUT the funeral and then getting shamed for not crying??? goddamn
in the end i love how her least complicated friendships came from the one's outside of the church, i feel like it's good that way. that those people can just be there for Her and not try and guide her towards some light. they just wanted her company :((
tragic film full of despair, loved it!!

the colour of pomegranates / sayat nova
1969
sergei parajanov
an abstract film about the life of a poet. i loved the way the film read like moving storybook illustrations, like illuminated manuscripts accompanying the narration.
characters are intentionally placed against flat backgrounds or framed in square rooms to compress the space to just that of the film dimensions.
i love how certain colours are isolated in the scenes, and i found myself anticipating when dark reds and fuchsia would come up next.
ofc the textile too was immensely important to the story, the textures brought dimension to an otherwise flat background. the way layering was used as a device was also really interesting.
