The more I teach (and learn and relearn in order to teach) the fundamentals and theories of game design the more I am convinced that there is a major schism in core principles between games (digital, board, etc) and roleplaying games. Like looking at an evolutionary tree and learning where elephants and manatees split.
I feel like this is obvious to some of my peers, but for months now I've been going through a sort of silent, back of my mind contemplation about why it feels like what I teach and what I practice differ. Not contradictory, necessarily, but different. Especially because I haven't been designing roleplaying games for a little bit now, my mind has been walking the streets of concrete design.
I feel as if I have to get lost again, close my eyes and feel the gentle pull of the fruitful void. I miss it.

Watching Dune 1 and 2 last week really kicked me out of my "I'm just watching content to fill the void" cycle. I was reminded that I should be filling my life with inspiration, with things that matter to me, that bring me joy and make me think even a little bit
Wait maybe it's cause it's spring hmm

i hate it when i cant even write a poem about something because its too obvious. like in the airbnb i was at i guess it used to be a kids room cause you could see the imprint of one little glow in the dark star that had been missed and painted over in landlord white. like that's a poem already what's the point

Bram may be a humble research assistant at the Ikari Institute, but the Bhande's skill with paper and ink and the ability to truly represent their subject, has gained them access to many restricted places and people across Ajurea. Their subjects range as much their world does; dedicating poachers and mayors and fallen gods to page, even receiving invites from the more...ego stroking, to have their portraits drawn and kept in the vast archives of Ikari. Just a few portraits of some of Confluence's NPC's that will be found in the Atlas! Was so fun to work with shadow and line, though I couldn't resist some colour, it's me u guys Now, Big Question: who'd you like to meet most?? All art is mine, see more of confluence on our twitter!

Shit man, this wizard war is fucked. I just saw a guy clap his hands together and say "the ten hells" or some similar shit, and every one around him turned inside out, had their tibia explode and then disappeared. The camera didn't even go onto him, that's how common shit like this is. My ass is casting frostbite and level 2 poison. I think I just heard "power word:scrunch" two groups over. I gotta get the fuck outta here.

Hey btw, if you're doing worldbuilding on something, and you're scared of writing ~unrealistic~ things into it out of fear that it'll sound lazy and ripped-out-of-your-ass, but you also don't want to do all the back-breaking research on coming up with depressingly boring, but practical and ~realistic~ solutions, have a rule:
Just give the thing two layers of explanation. One to explain the specific problem, and another one explaining the explanation. Have an example:
Plot hole 1: If the vampires can't stand daylight, why couldn't they just move around underground?
Solution 1: They can't go underground, the sewer system of the city is full of giant alligators who would eat them.
Well, that's a very quick and simple explanation, which sure opens up additional questions.
Plot hole 2: How and why the fuck are there alligators in the sewers? How do they survive, what do they eat down there when there's no vampires?
Solution 2: The nuns of the Underground Monastery feed and take care of them as a part of their sacred duties.
It takes exactly two layers to create an illusion that every question has an answer - that it's just turtles all the way down. And if you're lucky, you might even find that the second question's answer loops right back into the first one, filling up the plot hole entirely:
Plot hole 3: Who the fuck are the sewer nuns and what's their point and purpose?
Solution 3: The sewer nuns live underground in order to feed the alligators, in order to make sure that the vampires don't try to move around via the sewer system.
When you're just making things up, you don't need to have an answer for everything - just two layers is enough to create the illusion of infinite depth. Answer the question that looms behind the answer of the first question, and a normal reader won't bother to dig around for a 3rd question.

In today's Level Design class I'm talking about Difficulty and I'm very excited to talk about my favorite spell casting system in ttrpgs: The Fantasy Flight Genesys Spell Crafting Tables
Tumblr media
I love these things. Is it a little clunky? Sure! But I love a spell casting system that says "sure you CAN try to cast a really power spell you fuckin novice see how that goes" and then after a few levels in you it becomes completely doable and rewarding!
I want to use this as a specific type of Difficulty Scaling outside of just video games, I hope my students like it!
Also fun fact, a long time ago I reformated these into better, printable spell book type pages for my own convenience. If anyone plays Genesys and wants them here you go
