The Hummingbird Hawk Moth
This insect is very interesting because of its double bird name. It resembles a hummingbird far more than a hawk. But it is a moth, and the similarities between this moth and hummingbirds are an example of convergent evolution. Meaning two distant relative organisms that occupy the same ecological niches independently evolve analogous structures that have similar functions and appearances. The hummingbird hawk moth has a long beak used for feeding just like a hummingbird, they also make the same humming sounds as a hummingbird. It is a summer resident of the UK and migrants to Southern Europe. It can also be found on woodland edges and healthland and scrub. The caterpillar feeds on various species of bedstraw, and the female moths lay their eggs on the bud or flower of this plant.

Screaming Hairy Armadillo
This armadillo is significantly higher than the common armadillo, even in places you wouldn't expect, like all over its hard shell. Explaining the hairy part of the name, now for the screaming refers to the animal making a very loud screeching sound and squeal when being handled by humans. Sadly this is because humans tend to hunt them for their meat. The screaming hairy armadillo is found in central and southern parts of South America. They live in burrows. There are three species of hairy armadillo’s and the screaming is the smallest. They are usually just under 2 pounds, and range from 8 to 15 inches, with another 3 to 6 inches for their tale. The males are usually larger than the females. These armadillos are not very social animals, when they are inactive they spend most of their time alone in their underground burrows. These animals have a very unique way or burrowing and digging holes, instead of using their legs and claws they use their heads. They force them into the ground and then turn in a circle to create a cone shaped hole. With their diet being mostly insects that also means eating lots of sand. Research has shown that the armadillo’s stomach is 50% sand.

Strange-Tailed Tyrant
This bird perfectly fits this blog, animals with strange names, well this bird has strange as the first word in its name. The strange-tailed tyrant belongs to the biggest bird family, with over 400 species in it. This bird got its name from its defining feature on its tail. Its tail consists of feathers that are significantly bigger than the rest of its body. The Tyrant part of its name comes from the species of bird and the man who discovered it. Female tyrants can grow up to 7.5 inches, and the males can grow up to almost 12 inches. The Strange tailed Tyrant lives in wet areas, such as marshes and damp grasslands. They can also live in savannas and shrubby areas. The most important population of this species live in South Paraguay and Northeast Argentina. They mainly feed on insects and invertebrates, they are most likely found at the top of tall grass stems.

Ice Cream Cone Worm
This aquatic worm gets its name from the shelter that it builds itself. Without this shell they have a see through skin and weird pale spikes coming out of their body, they have lots of internal organs on display with their clear skin.  These worms live in tubes that they assemble out of grains of sand and fragments of shells. They form this tube with a special glue-like substance that comes from specialized glands on their body, this tube soon becomes big enough for the worm to live in. This tube soon starts to resemble an ice cream cone, earning these worms their name. These worms can reach up to two inches and live in shallow marine waters all around the world. The ice cream worms have a comp of tough setae, which is almost like long thin teeth. They use this comp to dig into the sand. And around the comb the worm has tentacles around its mouth to grab edible detritus in the sand. When this food moves through their digestive system and comes out the other end it starts to just fill up the space between the worm and the cone. Something very interesting about this worm is that they spend the early days of their life floating around the ocean as larvae. They also cover themselves with mucus, this is suspected to be because of their lack of coverage from the organs that are exposed. Once they descend to the bottom of the ocean they start to build that ice cream cone, out of sand that they will soon live in.

Leafy Seadragon
The leafy seadragon closely resembles the common fish, the seadragon. It differs from the seadragon because of its leafy body parts that come out of the leafy fish body. These protrusions look like tree leafs, hence the leafy name. These leaf life body parts act as camouflage allowing the seadragon to look like nothing more than a floating piece of seaweed. Some leafy seadragons can change the color of their leaves to blend better with its surroundings. They are found in the South Australian reefs. And can grow up to 13.5 inches. The male seadragon fertilizes the eggs on a special part of its tail. The female seadragon puts the eggs there, and these 250 eggs stay attached for 4 to 6 weeks until they hatch. After they hatch they are completely on their own. The leafy seadragons do not have any predators, mostly because of their ability to camouflage.

Tasseled Wobbegong
The tasseled wobbegong is a type of carpet shark. With its almost animated like appearance it swims across the sand in the bottom of the ocean. It can grow up to six feet long, its long body covered in splotches of color allowing it to camouflage into the coral. The shark's most defining feature is what's called dermal lobes hanging around its head. These lobes closely resemble tassels, hence the name. The word wobbegong is an Australian term that means “shaggy beard” which also refers to the appearance of the lobe around the sharks face.
This shark has a very unique way of catching prey. Being one of the most fierce predators in the deep sea it uses its appearance to blend into the sea bed, using its eyes to focus perfectly on a single spot, usually its prey. It is a master of patience and just waits for it prey to approach. If that doesn’t work it uses its tail to move slowly and attract the prey towards it. When it is in range the Wobbegong strikes. It opened its mouth so fast that it causes a pressure difference in the water, sucking the prey straight to its mouth, where the shark swallows it whole.

Satanic Leaf Tailed Gecko
The satanic leaf tailed gecko has a flattened tail that does very closely resemble a leaf, which is where it gets its name. The Satanic part is a little more of a mystery. It might come from its unsettling and odd appearance, the completely white eyes may have played a part in the name.  Although its appearance is unlike anything we have seen it is vital to the survival of the gecko. Serving as a form of camouflage allowing it to hang from branches of trees and blend in to hide from predators. This reptile is only found in the mountains and rainforests of Madagascar. The range in length from 2.5-3.5 inches. The gecko will eat anything it can fit into its mouth, from crickets to spiders.
They are found at the base of the tree, the gecko rests all day. When the gecko sleeps it resembles the leaf the most, leafy tail up and twisted to accentuate the leaf like edges. It has limited ability to change color, and when the camouflage fails it flicks its head upward and tilts its head back opening its mouth exposing an orange red interior and sometimes can emit a loud distressed call.

The Rasberry Crazy Ant
Although this insect does have a red tint that is not how it got its name. The Rasberry Crazy Ant was named after a Texas exterminator, Tom Rasberry, who was the first to notice the increase of the species in Texas in 2002. The insect is originally from South Africa but is an  invasive species making its way across Texas and Southeast United States. These insects are invasive because they are unaffected by most pesticides. They are known for chewing through electrical wires and causing short circuits.
Crazy ants are about ⅛ inch long. They are winning the battle against the fire ant. Crazy ants have a fire ant anti venom gland. These crazy ants also congregate in very large numbers, they can form supercolonies that can stretch for miles. Crazy ants have a large lack of natural predators making them able to congregate and dominate so largely. Scientists have had to come up with new and advanced techniques to try and manage these unique insects.

The Maned Wolf
We all know what a fox looks like, and we all know what a wolf looks like, but do you know the maned wolf? These animals have had to evolve to live in high grass savannahs, meaning their legs are very long, paired with a thick red coat and tall pointy ears. Even though this animal looks like a fox and is called a wolf studies have proven that it isn’t related to either species, but instead a distinct species of its own.
The maned wolf stands about 3 feet tall and weighs up to 50 pounds. They are natice to a wide variety of countries all in central and eastern South America. Different from wolves they do not howl but rather let out loud barks to let their mate know where they are.
Common to other animals they mark their territory by peeing, but unique to themselves their urine has a very very bad smell.
They are solo hunters and eat small mammals, fruits and plants.

The Red Lipped Batfish
This fish is one of the most unique creatures to live in the deep sea. From its bright red lips to almost bat like fin wings. One of the most interesting things about this fish is that scientists have not figured out why these animals have the bright red lips. They speculate that it is for fish to better tell them apart during spawning.
These bat-like fins are actually very useful to this fish. They are able to use them almost like legs, they can walk on the ocean floor. Coming out of the top of their head is a bone-like projection called an illicium that houses an organ called an esca that lures its prey. This is very useful because these batfish are very bad swimmers so it is hard to chase down prey without the illicium. Because of this illicium they are categorized as anglerfish.
Red-Lipped Batfish are found in the Pasific Ocean and range in depths between 10 feet and 249 feet. They grow to about 8 inches in length. Scientists are still trying to learn more about this mysterious and quirky animal.

The Fried Egg Jellyfish
We all know the stingy electric blob of almost nothingness that we call a jellyfish. But the fried egg jellyfish is a yellowy orange blob with a little bump on the top resembling a sunny side up egg, surrounded by a white ring that resembles the white of an egg. The similarities end with the visuals, because fried egg jellyfish can get up to 16 inches in diameter. They can be found in the Mediterranean sea.
Fun Fact:  research has shown that the cytotoxicity found in the fried egg jellyfish can be useful for treating breast cancer.
These jellyfish are great at making friends, sometimes small critters like crabs hitch a ride on top of the inside of the jellyfishes bell, away from the stingers. But they can’t stay friends for long because the fried egg jellyfish only live for about a half a year, from summer to winter.
These fishes have an interesting way of feeding, they have appendages from their mouth
which is their way of trapping prey and eating it.

Welcome to My Blog
For the past year life has consisted of the walls of our houses, and that's about it. Covid has pretty much ruined all parts of life that are fun and make us happy. Sure we have adapted to make life slightly better, but we have all found ways to make us happy or give us a slight laugh. I have found that weird animals with odd names and funky looks have given me a little bit of joy.
