claudia had ventured out to take in the sights and sounds of the of the lunar new year festival. after all the events that had occurred in the town over the past few weeks, she was somewhat expecting some sort of commotion beyond the normal for a festival in a small town. she mused the question a moment before answering. "probably too much," she admitted. "seems the town wants people to forget the whole tomb incident and the mayor's demise with a conveniently timed celebration." nothing really surprised her anymore. but even she could admit it was a smart pr move for the council.

katherine stood watching a dance performance, her face revealing nothing. she was wearing a red and gold cheongsam, her hair pinned up in a chignon. while she had been born in thailand, her mother had been chinese. "pathetic." she muttered, her thoughts being filled with the bittersweet memory of her mother. or many they were on the vampire authority's sorry excuse for a lunar new year. "how much do you think this whole cost?" she asks, crossing her arms. having spent a number of years in china, the small town's idea of lunar new year paled in comparison.

"okay," she said, though it came out more like a question than a simple response. it wasn't every day she met an edgar allan poe wannabe. "you should be a poet or something," she added a moment later. "really have that whole vibe going for you. i bet you'd make a killing."

DRUSILLA SIGHED SOFTLY as she watched the slayer from the shadows. all slayers had the same radiance from them - yet hers was clouded - the stink of death. it was a familiar stench for her - she had caused it many of times. "the cracks are like lines of a life.... broken and fragile. One slip and you could ---." She motioned her finger moving upwards - then withdrawn as if cutting it.

"that's a negative on the insurance." at this rate, she was gonna have to ask her dad for an advance on next year's birthday present or something. "i'm starting to think maybe i don't deserve a smart phone. maybe i need to go back to how old people used to do things and just have a brick-looking flip phone."

bella winced sympathetically as she crouched down to help pick up the pieces. she understood more than most the consequences of being clumsy. " i've said worst things when i've broken my things. but as long as you have insurance, you should be fine." bella said, very much an advocate for insurance considering how many things she had broken over the course of her life. at this rate, she was on first name basis with all of her insurance providers.

"only a couple months. and no insurance because i clearly hate myself." she rolled her eyes at her own stupidity, knowing she'd brought this on herself. wouldn't be the first phone she'd destroyed, and likely wouldn't be the last either. though in her defense, this one had been a replacement for one she'd broken after fighting a demon who'd pushed her into a lake. also not her finest moment. "it's probably hopeless, but i guess i can try a sob story or something and hope the worker takes pity on me."

seeing the phone almost made him laugh, but he managed to stay composed. this town was proving to be more and more intriguing. "depends on who is going to be behind the counter when you go to report it." while making sure not to run his hands over the broken shards, he did take his time to look over the device. a part of him wondered if magic could fix it, but it was too soon for that. he barely knew this woman. "how long did you have it? maybe there's some insurance policy or something where you can get a new free one."

claudia was born in a different time and to entirely different circumstances than the ones she currently faces. her birth was a mistake, an accident of passion between two young people who weren't prepared for a child. her mother died in childbirth as was common in that time, and her father had no desire to be a father to a bastard child. instead, claudia was given to her maiden aunt, a gift, he would later claim. her early life was remarkably unremarkable in any way. she had chores, went to church on sundays, and tried to avoid beatings by her bitter aunt.

it wasn't until the fires in storyville that her life changed. she was rescued from the fire by what she thought was an angel and changed by another. only, they weren't angels but vampires. demons, her aunt would have said. but they didn't seem much like demons to her. either way, she was thrilled with the new life and what it offered her.

while she was initially enamored with the new, extravagant, carefree life she'd been given, that love soon turned to bitterness as life passed by and yet, she never changed. she initially played by the rules she'd been given, but after accidentally killing a mortal boy she'd become fascinated with, almost all morality left her. she became, sort of, a ripper for a while, killing indiscriminately and in multitudes. after being discovered and having a falling out with louis & lestat, she ventured out on her own only to find the vampiric world wasn't as welcoming as she'd anticipated.

after a few years, she returned to her makers, though she was ill-content with the status quo, leading her to eventually 'kill' lestat ( though this was unsuccessful ). she & louis ventured to europe where they met a troupe of vampires which led to her being condemned to death ( also unsuccessful ), and she found herself on her own once more.

through the years, she's made her own way in the world, making money in the few ways she could. claudia rarely stays in one place long, has little in the way of friends or companions, and still enjoys the kill. she found a niche writing vampire romance novels, though the sales have somewhat fluctuated since the reveal of vampires to the world, she's still able to continue the lifestyle she's become accustomed to.

   buffy looked down at the shattered remains of her phone before gingerly picking it up in an attempt to not cut herself on the shards of glass and muttered a curse under her breath. it was toast, that much was clear. “so,” she mused, “think i could get away with saying this was normal wear and tear?” the question was a failing attempt at a joke that fell rather flat causing her to wince slightly. but she was really regretting not getting that extra insurance when she’d bought it a few months ago. and not backing it up anytime since. “this seriously blows.”

buffy had a fairly sterotypical l.a. childhood. she had loving parents who argued a little too much behind closed doors, an annoying younger sister to bug her, and clothes to shop for at the local mall. all in all, she was a carefree, loveable ( somewhat superficial ) valley girl. at least, until the dreams started.

she began having weird dreams towards the end of high school, but managed to graduate while still maintaining her run as prom queen and her spot on the cheerleading squad. the dreams continued into her first semester at college, dreams of girls fighting monsters through the different ages. this was finally explained to her when merrick arrived at her school to inform her that she was a 'slayer' and was supposed to fight vampires and other things that went bump in the night.

things kinda went to shit after that. her watcher died, she was asked politely to leave that college ( they could never actually prove that she was responsible for the damage ) and after a bit of soul searching, she moved to chance harbor for a new chance at being a normal girl. funny how that never seems to work out for her.

shortly after arriving to chance harbor, things went even more south for her. she found out about a prophesy that involved her dying which wasn't exactly what she wanted to hear while trying to figure out if she really needed to buy every expensive textbook. along the way, she made some new friends, got a new watcher, had some great times, died a little bit, closed the hellmouth. you know, all the normal things she wanted to do with her life.

things have been a bit rocky for her since the whole dying and coming back to life thing. although she's putting on a brave face and acting like she's totally fine, buffy's wondering if it's all really worth it. if her life is the price to pay, she's not entirely sure it's fair that she has to pay the price for something she never asked to be in the first place.
