So today I went to five below and saw these little care bear plushies for really cheap. I also noticed that they were not the same as the bean plushies I’ve seen at Walmart and other realtors. So obviously I scooped them all into my cart like a madman, here’s a comparison between them (more details under break)

(Top: five below plushies, Bottom: Regular bean plushies)

So for the comparison, we are going to use cheer.

(Left: five below, Right: bean)

Major differences:

- five below plush is a bit bigger (12”) than the bean plush (9”) (regular Care Bears are 14”)

-five below plush has a flat printed tummy symbol, the bean one has fluffy embroidered tummy

-five below plush has no whites on the inside of ears

-five below plush seems a bit less… shapely? I don’t know if that’s how you would describe it

-five below nose is embroidered, bean has a button nose

-five below plush was five dollars, the bean one was, I believe around 10? Correct me if I’m wrong

-five below plush does not have a bean bag inside

Other than that they appear to be made out of the same fur except on the tummy which is a shorter fur compared to the normal care bears. Overall for the price this it’s a really good plush

I kinda assumed these were just cheaper made toys made specifically for dollar store type places, but after doing some searching, I thought that they were the same plushies from this set (source: Walmart dot com)

However, that’s not the case, as these guys are listed at 9”, same size as the Walmart plush and, as more noticeable on the close up images, have button noses

So, I guess there’s at least 3 different versions of smaller Care Bears plushies floating around?

What really bothers me is the price, the harmony bear set is lower quality to the normal bean plushies, but at 50$ for five bears they are basically the same price as the higher quality beans, which is a bit weird but I don’t know what I expected from Walmart

Anyway, got a little off track, I really made this post to say that if you have a five below on your area, keep an eye out for these plushies, for 5 dollars they’re pretty good and I’d recommend them to any care bear lover looking for cheaper options.

New Custom Care Bear - Growing Love Bear

I got my second COVID vaccine last week, so I was finally able to go spend a weekend with my Grandfather, Mom and Aunt.  It turns out my Mom loves crafting too (it’s so nice that we finally have a hobby in common!) so I thought I’d bring a bear with me to work on.  She ended up being too busy to sit down and craft with me, but she did suggest the tummy symbol – something that reflects her love of gardening (another of her hobbies).  She wanted a bear with flowers, but I thought it should be different from Friend Bear’s daisies or Grams/Polite Panda’s roses.  So, I thought a pastel violet would be cute.  

Mom gave me some new, pastel-coloured embroidery thread, so I thought I’d use them, as well as this cute little bee button.  In hindsight I should have put yellow middles in the two smaller flowers as well, but meh.  The outline is actually a continuation of the main flower’s stem. The nose is painted garden green, using some of Mom’s acrylic paints.  I need to ask her where she got that set – it’s better than my paints.  

I think I have done better customs, but this one still turned out pretty well, especially for finishing in one afternoon and supervising my son painting at the same time.

Okay, I MIGHT be at a point where I can start being active on this blog again.

A while ago I got my hands on this blue My First Care Bear. He’s a bit well loved, his embroidered smile is coming undone and he’s missing his belly mirror. I want to try restitching his mouth but have been unable to find a good color of thread, and I’m unsure of what I should do about the mirror situation, any ideas?

for those of you who follow me for care bears related content... here's a post with the most recent australian merch releases!

at first i thought this guy wasn't a new release and was actually just an older release of the nights aglow bears from a few years ago, but upon closer inspection, this bedtime is in the utm style! he retails for $39.99 AUD

this is a limited edition release of hopeful heart bear! another bear in the UTM style (although i don't know why they always choose hopeful heart for the more recent releases). she retails in stores for $39 AUD!

of course i had to save the best for last... limited edition crystal best friend bear! again, i have no idea why hopeful heart and best friend bear are always the top two choices for limited edition bears but. i love her. she's so so gorgeous... she retails for a whopping $69 AUD though, so hopefully i can find her on the secondhand market unboxed for cheaper at some point, since i don't want to keep my bears in the boxes anyway.

I finally have 10 followers!  I’ve been getting a lot of interest lately in my Care Bear posts, so in honour of the cuddly bears we all know and love, I thought I’d post part of my collection.

These are 6 of the special edition, 25th anniversary Care Bears from 2008. They’re definitely more adult’s collectors’ items than toys for kids (unlike all the other bears in my collection), in that they have Swarovski crystals in their eyes, and sterling silver noses and butt hearts.  One, Heart of Gold Tenderheart, has gold-coloured accents instead.  

So here is Share Bear, Bedtime Bear, Funshine Bear, Cheer Bear, Love-a-Lot Bear and Tenderheart Bear.  I have about half of the collection.  Missing Grumpy, Best Friend and Harmony, the brown coloured Heart of Gold Tenderheart and the Silver edition, white-furred Tenderheart.  Maybe I’ll get lucky and find them on Ebay.  

Overall, these bears are cool and all, but I do prefer the mainline toys, since I have no problems letting my son play with them, especially the vintage 80s bears.  35+ year old bears (and cousins!), and they can still handle an active 4 year old!  Talk about well-made!
