“Can you believe this view?!” He whispers, tossing an arm over the vocalist’s shoulders, an eyebrow raised. “You okay? You seem a little… tense,” he says somewhat teasingly, giving the other’s arm a pinch.

Something about New York felt less foreign than he initially expected. The large buildings were easily reminiscent of Seoul, and the signs in English made him reflect on the childhood in Hawaii he nearly threw away. Several of the members of Blue.M had relatively similar experiences to his own, and it became second nature to speak to them in a mishmash of English and Korean that shifted from foot to foot with ease. However, when it came to certain situations, any sense of language outside of incoherent rambling became lost on him. 

He barely registered Danny’s expressions of awe for the vista laid out before them but Hyunsoo could only hyper-fixate on the sharp drop just over the waist high edge. Plenty of feet of concrete separated the rooftop set up from the edge, and yet, it seemed so close in the scope of his perfectly rational fear. His hands and teeth clenched, tense shoulders raising up without him realizing it. ( Until the soreness of a stressful moment would haunt his muscles. )

No, I really can’t believe this view and I don’t want to look. Why did it have to be so high? Why would they choose to do a set for the music video here of all places? Are they out of their right minds?

Hyunsoo briefly composed himself for long enough to squeak out an answer to his member, his voice wrought with audible anxiety. It trembled ever so slightly on the edges of his words. “I’m notㅡ I don’t... I don’t seem a little tense. I am tense.” 

The vocalist’s tone of speaking often got away from him. There were too many times he did not realize. When the tension rose, his typically calm demeanor shifted into someone with a fragile temper, easily prone to snapping with the right push. The potential for personality scandals aside, it was not as if Hyunsoo wanted things to be this way, and he would easily apologize when given the chance, but in the moment, everything bubbled within him like a stirring volcano.

“I’m gonna sit down. Do they have any of the chairs set up on the table set yet?”

bumping into hyunsoo after all these years was a little odd. they went from being two kids hanging around broadcasting stations to now performing in them. dohee’s changed. she knows that. which means she also knows that she feels a layer of vulnerability whenever she’s around someone that’s known her before this whole journey of becoming an idol. before she entered yuseong’s buildings, got sold out to wishbone and then eventually debuted in an idol group that she can call her own.

so there’s a joke on the tip of her tongue when she hears what hyunsoo has to say after literally crashing into her, but she swallows it. instead, she gives him an acknowledging nod before letting a careful chuckle escape her lips. they’re technically not in front of the cameras which means she doesn’t have to force her vitamin-filled smile and high-toned voice. nevertheless, there’s still a few looking eyes including their respective members as they idle around backstage, waiting for whatever cue to come for all of them.

“didn’t think i was that short,” she comments eventually before looking up at him. it’s weird because he’s grown like two heads taller while she’s remained close to the ground. she doesn’t know everything he’s been through to get to where he is now, but she can’t help but wonder if he’s suffered as much as she has.

The familiar face of who he just brushed shoulders with did not register in his foggy mind until he heard her voice. His head snapped down to look at her, triggering a sharp twinge in the base of his neck. He slapped his hand against the spot, biting back a visible grimace with a half-hearted smile. It was already quite the embarrassment to admit he had not been paying enough attention to where he was going ㅡ the uneven labeling on a sports drink he grabbed from the vending machines was a far more interesting thing to focus on. He continued to idly pick at the sides of the flimsy material even with his eyes focused on Dohee.

Hyunsoo almost felt the compulsion to apologize once again with the new consideration of who it was. Certainly she felt the same way, combating the distinct oddities of running into something of a long lost person from childhood ㅡ one of the only ones he managed to have. 

Could it even be appropriate to label her as a friend? It was a question he could not quite answer on his own. He was still unsure whether or not she changed much. Seeing her on stage and in videos with the vision of a bubbly personality and a presence that would only suit a member of the group he admittedly found himself becoming fond of. ( He should not admit that he did not initially recognize her when the music video of her pre-debut single released. )

“Hm. Well, actually you are short.” It was easy for Hyunsoo to shift his demeanor. He took the sports drink and briefly placed it on the crown of Dohee’s head. For what reason was beyond him and all other omniscient forces. “I think approximately 18cm by now.” 

The next train of thought processed slowly after. Nerves of his pending stage fright easily overshadowed any other sort of function he typically had decent control of. Why was he about to ask her why she was there? It was obvious just looking at her. As if either of them would wear their respective stage outfits anywhere else.

“Is your group still waiting to go on for rehearsals?”

“hyuuuung~” he whined, voice cute and high-pitched as he wrapped his arms around hyunsoo’s leg. “hyungie, will you get me coffee?” sunghoon pouted up at the other, fluttering his lashes as cute as he could. “i’m still so sleepy.”

“it’ll help me wake up.” hoon hugged hyunsoo’s leg tighter, hoping that would convince him to say yes. 

The entirety of Hyunsoo's trip to New York was spent with his eyes glued shut. Countless hours in the plane in his attempt to prepare him for the full turn of timezones. He had been around to other countries frequently enough to learn how to adapt himself to the heavy consequences of it.

Hyunsoo managed to wake up early with the sufficient rest settling in his bones ㅡ though they ached ever so slightly, craving the caffeine he managed to get himself addicted to over the past year. No amount of espresso would be enough to satiate the craving in the back of his throat. Like a quench for water that a normal human should have. ( He could certainly quit any time he wanted. ) He still sat up in his bed while the others continued washing up, posture slightly hunched as he concentrated on the Switch clutched in his lap. The volume was turned up relatively loud and projected the heavy metal soundtrack of the game. Perfect to eliminate demons to.

Hyunsoo wiggled both of his legs, not bothering to peel his hands away from his game. He clenched his teeth and his eyes widened each time his character lost health. Gradually, his focus shifted to Sunghoon, the claustrophobia setting in with each inch the younger managed to get closer to him. He had half a mind to wiggle himself off the bed; even if it meant finding himself crumpled on the floor.

"You have legs. You can go get the coffee yourself." He answered in a grumble, a scrunch of his nose coming after to adjust his glasses. He could not brush past the throbbing in his head or the beginnings of a growling in the pit of his stomach. *Resist. Resist.*

"Ugh..." The resigned sigh he released had the first signs of his defeat. If only for his own selfish reasons. "Fine. Let's go. Both of us. But I'm not doing this just because you were acting cute. I'm hungry."

The impatient young man tapped his fingers against the glossy surface of the table he now draped himself over. There was a slight tinge of guilt ㅡ knowing full well it would need to be wiped down in a matter of minutes. His weak attempt to make up for the smudges was to pluck a number of fallen petals from the wood and place them in his open palm. Not yet wilted, vibrant, still plush, and full of life. Tears from a thoughtful bouquet he purchased from the florist ㅡ one he was too shy to gift to the person he intended.

He wanted to insist that he wasn’t being thoughtful. That he just thought they looked nice as he was passing by … coincidentally on a path he rarely took. A scenic route traveled by one who consistently claimed to abhor nature. It didn’t matter, in the end. The flowers would be left to whither in the shadow of his reluctance.

Hyunsoo released a sigh dripping with regret as he peeled himself from the seat, only to feel the collision of someone else’s against his knuckles. Then, a quick apology.

“It’s fine.” It wasn’t really but he found himself disgruntled with his own inability to muster up a verbal apology from his own end ㅡ as if doing so would surrender some part of himself. He glanced down at the small red mark on his index finger with nothing more than a frown, however. 

Inhaling, he finally mustered up the courage to glance in his direction ㅡ although his eyes averted every now and then. “You should sit here. It’s got a better view.” 

He glanced out the window, taking in the soothing sight of an empty street, only overhanging decorative trees outside the café obscuring the perfect picture. Uncharacteristically, a small smile began to crack on Hyunsoo’s usual stone-like expression. He visibly tried to suppress it, biting into his lips so as to not bear his teeth.

What has the most influence on your style (music, fashion, makeup, etc)?

"Not much, to be honest. I just put on whatever I think looks good for the day and let the stylists dress me or suggest stuff to wear. I'm not too into fashion or anything like that, really."

What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

"Hopefully, still promoting with my group." That is the answer that everyone wanted to hear, of course. Blossoms, in particular. However, he was uncertain whether or not he would still be satisfied remaining in the company. Perhaps his views on the contract would change as the years went on. For the time being, the slight pessimism would persist until he eventually grew out of it. "I kind of want to have at least one solo song. Like the kind you release right before you enlist. Maybe I might be a little more sentimental like that ten years down the road."

If you had 3 wishes, what would they be?

"One. To never get exhausted from dancing and exercise. I have good stamina already but it'd be useful on stage. Two. To have super speed so I could do a bunch of stuff at once and run away from my members way faster. Three... I really want IOI to come back and not just for a Vlive reunion. Seriously they could have been the biggest thing if only th--... Nevermind."

What about yourself would you change?

He doesn't have to think about it for a second. It's similar to another question he's been asked recently, so he does not want to dwell on it for too long. To admit he wanted to change anything about himself, even his height, would betray the false sense of confidence he crafted into a mask. There are far too many things he knows that his mother would change about him but he would be remised to capitulate to any of them. ( Career change, attitude change, for him to be a more attentive son. ) So he simply states, "Nothing, of course."

Has there ever been a moment where you’ve been frustrated with your group?

"Well, there's plenty of times that I have been, yeah." The amount of times he could count expands too far to put on both hands ( and even both feet ). Between the small spats and disagreements during practices stemming from their days as trainees, to the time spent with them just in the dorms, Hyunsoo easily thought of at least a dozen within that second. "They don't listen to me. They're too loud. They don't know a lot of things and it really gets to me when I have to constantly correct them on the smallest stuff that should easily be common sense. And a few of them are clingy and pinch me in the sides when I'm not looking. I hate all of them, really." He pauses. "But that's part of having brothers."

If you could choose your next comeback, what concept would it be?

"I don't know." Hyunsoo allowed the seconds to pass with every blink he gave behind his round lenses. It was not as if he did not like the current concept Blue.M was given. It suited the ages and vibes of his fellow members, in general, and the general public seemed to take quite the liking to. It would be foolish of him to deny that. "I don't think something that's too far off from what we're doing right now. Maybe something like Shinee seniors have done. Like View or Atlantis. A little more mature but stuff fresh. Maybe we can cover those songs, at least, someday."

Is there anything about yourself that you would never change?

"There's nothing about myself that I would ever change, in the first place." That was quite the lie, wasn't it? The list of things Lee Hyunsoo would change about himself read as long as a master's thesis. He hid the numerous insecurities that bubbled up inside him like an ugly scar. ( Surely, the list his parents had was even longer. ) If he came forward with an admission about one thing that he would never change, would he not, in turn, be admitting he had things that he desperately wished to move away from? He was unsure. He would never change his level of ambition, his talents, and the knowledge he possessed. Perhaps more than he thought. "So, I'd never change anything. I like being myself." Liar.

(   Hello, it’s Sera again and I would like to introduce you to the lead vocal of BLUE.M, Lee Hyunsoo! BACKGROUND !!

Came into this cursed world October 1st, 2000.

Born in Honolulu, but moved to Incheon with his family when he was 6 years old.

His mother, Hwang Jiyoon, is a traditional Korean singer, and his father, Lee Minjae, is a renowned piano prodigy. He also has a few other family members who are very involved in music.

Has an older brother that’s a professional composer and violinist and a younger sister that’s studying fashion.

He is the forgotten middle child.

He initially wanted to be a computer science major but his parents pushed him to sing from a young age and he just ran with it after a while to passively please them.

Went to Hanlim out of obligation to his parents but ended up not minding it ( especially since he ended up meeting some friends there! ), and it was a lot better than just being forced to do piano recitals.

Somewhat neutral in his view of being an idol. Doesn’t mind Blue.M’s concept, doesn’t think it’s the best thing ever either. ( Though he has his own theories about the music videos thanks to his imagination concerning aliens. ( ie. The UFO in Bloom Bloom) and won’t shut up about it. )

Thinks he doesn't deserve to be an idol because he's convinced his parents used their money to help him debut. ( Despite it not being true. )

Major imposter syndrome alert.

Often buys things for his friends and members without much question; however, he keeps a very detailed list of those who owe him and how much.

Although he puts on more of an act on stage, he finds value in being sincere in who he is and not changing his personality, even if he comes across as a bit cold at first.

Diagnosed with a panic disorder and will often self-isolate when things are not going well for him.

Wears glasses and can’t see that well without them. He can technically afford Lasik but he thinks the glasses give him a certain charm.

Afraid of heights; will basically physically shut down and cry if he has to go up somewhere too high.

Uses alcohol to cope with his panic. We don’t talk about it.

CAREER & OTHER STUFF !!

When he’s not doing schedules, he’s playing games, especially on the computer he built and customized himself; and sometimes plays DnD with an online group who have no idea who he is.

If he wasn’t a singer, he would be in a field that deals with computer science and technology.

The song he auditioned with was a ballad version of Ladybug’s Every Night.

He did not know how to dance when he was accepted into the company.

A notable and open fan of multiple girl groups; especially Twice and Dandelion.

He often posts meme images he makes and saves online for fans to see.

Though one of the youngest in the group, he takes on a co-leader position sometimes by default, and he’s looked at as the “laissez-faire dad” of the group.

Already known for his ~real~ personality, giving very genuine reactions to things fans say that are unexpected of an idol.

Claims he intends to friend-zone his fans.

Fans often defend him by saying he’s “sassy” though he has already drawn netizen criticism for how he acts.

Obviously not comfortable with some of the stuff idols have to do. He doesn’t seem to like acting so close to actual strangers, and the crowding some fans do make him pretty anxious.

Believes aliens are real.

His favorite fanservice is making finger hearts in creative ways.

He hates doing aegyo and also doesn't like it when the others do it.

Obsessed ( and I mean obsessed ) with Soulsborne games and DOOM. Good luck trying to get him away from ER.

QUICK PLOT IDEAS !! ( while i come up with an actual plots page )

People that went to Hanlim from 2016 to 2019. He was a relatively quiet student that kept to himself. However, he often helped others do homework and made a small business for himself writing papers for people.

A fellow Gamer (tm). Hyunsoo is a bit pretentious when it comes to games, however, and exclusively plays certain games. Good luck getting him to play anything else other than Elden Ring right now without annoying complaint.

Trainees at Yuseong from 2017 - 2021. Again, he was pretty much always keeping to himself as a trainee and had trouble asking anyone else for help at all, even when he was obviously struggling with things like dance. Unfortunately, he doesn’t really look up to anyone.

Exes. Probably never ends well. One of which he definitely broke up with before Blue.M debuted because of “the rules”, at the very latest. Another he probably got broken up with because he is not overly attentive in relationships and tends to keep to himself too much because he’s shy and extremely introverted; either way, he lowkey hates you for it.

A rival. Playfully so. He’s competitive but doesn’t take himself too seriously. Someone in another idol group who is also a vocal or has a similar image to him. If the other person took it more seriously though, that would probably be most realistic!

Actual friends. People who are actually into who he is, despite him being a lowkey blunt jerk who spends most of his time in his room. Will be made with good chemistry. He’s really overly picky with friends, because he’s concerned people will use him or his money for some sort of gain.

Alternatively, someone actually trying to use him for his money by being his friend after he buys them a whole meal one day. But the only people he’ll ever be a glucose guardian to are Blue.M and his close good friends.

Someone who constantly has technical issues and he is always fixing it for them. Alternatively, someone who has “technical issues” as a bid to try and talk to him more.
